Morphology engineering of nickel molybdate hydrate nanoarray for electrocatalytic overall water splitting: from nanorod to nanosheet

Clearing Up Discrepancies in 2D and 3D Nickel Molybdate Hydrate Structures

When electrocatalysts are prepared, modification of the morphology is a common strategy to enhance their electrocatalytic performance. In this work, we have examined and characterized nanorods (3D) and nanosheets (2D) of nickel molybdate hydrates, which previously have been treated as the same material with just a variation in morphology. We thoroughly investigated the materials and report that they contain fundamentally different compounds with different crystal structures, chemical compositions, and chemical stabilities. The 3D nanorod structure exhibits the chemical formula NiMoO4·0.6H2O and crystallizes in a triclinic system, whereas the 2D nanosheet structures can be rationalized with Ni3MoO5-0.5x(OH)x·(2.3 - 0.5x)H2O, with a mixed valence of both Ni and Mo, which enables a layered crystal structure. The difference in structure and composition is supported by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, ion beam analysis, thermogravimetric analysis, X-ray diffraction, electron diffraction, infrared spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, and magnetic measurements. The previously proposed crystal structure for the nickel molybdate hydrate nanorods from the literature needs to be reconsidered and is here refined by ab initio molecular dynamics on a quantum mechanical level using density functional theory calculations to reproduce the experimental findings. Because the material is frequently studied as an electrocatalyst or catalyst precursor and both structures can appear in the same synthesis, a clear distinction between the two compounds is necessary to assess the underlying structure-to-function relationship and targeted electrocatalytic properties.

Nanostructured TiO2 Arrays for Energy Storage

Because of their extensive specific surface area, excellent charge transfer rate, superior chemical stability, low cost, and Earth abundance, nanostructured titanium dioxide (TiO₂) arrays have been thoroughly explored during the past few decades. The synthesis methods for TiO₂ nanoarrays, which mainly include hydrothermal/solvothermal processes, vapor-based approaches, templated growth, and top-down fabrication techniques, are summarized, and the mechanisms are also discussed. In order to improve their electrochemical performance, several attempts have been conducted to produce TiO₂ nanoarrays with morphologies and sizes that show tremendous promise for energy storage. This paper provides an overview of current developments in the research of TiO₂ nanostructured arrays. Initially, the morphological engineering of TiO₂ materials is discussed, with an emphasis on the various synthetic techniques and associated chemical and physical characteristics. We then give a brief overview of the most recent uses of TiO₂ nanoarrays in the manufacture of batteries and supercapacitors. This paper also highlights the emerging tendencies and difficulties of TiO₂ nanoarrays in different applications.

Intrinsic Lability of NiMoO4 to Excel the Oxygen Evolution Reaction

Nickel-based bimetallic oxides such as NiMoO₄ and NiWO₄, when deposited on the electrode substrate, show remarkable activity toward the electrocatalytic oxygen evolution reaction (OER). The stability of such nanostructures is nevertheless speculative, and catalytically active species have been less explored. Herein, NiMoO₄ nanorods and NiWO₄ nanoparticles are prepared via a solvothermal route and deposited on nickel foam (NF) (NiMoO₄/NF and NiWO₄/NF). After ensuring the chemical and structural integrity of the catalysts on electrodes, an OER study has been performed in the alkaline medium. After a few cyclic voltammetry (CV) cycles within the potential window of 1.0-1.9 V (vs reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE)), ex situ Raman analysis of the electrodes infers the formation of NiO(OH)_ED (ED: electrochemically derived) from NiMoO₄ precatalyst, while NiWO₄ remains stable. A controlled study, stirring of NiMoO₄/NF in 1 M KOH without applied potential, confirms that NiMoO₄ hydrolyzes to the isolable NiO, which under a potential bias converts into NiO(OH)_ED. Perhaps the more ionic character of the Ni-O-Mo bond in the NiMoO₄ compared to the Ni-O-W bond in NiWO₄ causes the transformation of NiMoO₄ into NiO(OH)_ED. A comparison of the OER performance of electrochemically derived NiO(OH)_ED, NiWO₄, ex-situ-prepared Ni(OH)₂, and NiO(OH) confirmed that in-situ-prepared NiO(OH)_ED remained superior with a substantial potential of 238 (±6) mV at 20 mA cm^-2. The notable electrochemical performance of NiO(OH)_ED can be attributed to its low Tafel slope value (26 mV dec^-1), high double-layer capacitance (C_dl, 1.21 mF cm^-2), and a low charge-transfer resistance (R_ct, 1.76 Ω). The NiO(OH)_ED/NF can further be fabricated as a durable OER anode to deliver a high current density of 25-100 mA cm^-2. Post-characterization of the anode proves the structural integrity of NiO(OH)_ED even after 12 h of chronoamperometry at 1.595 V (vs reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE)). The NiO(OH)_ED/NF can be a compatible anode to construct an overall water splitting (OWS) electrolyzer that can operate at a cell potential of 1.64 V to reach a current density of 10 mA cm^-2. Similar to that on NF, NiMoO₄ deposited on iron foam (IF) and carbon cloth (CC) also electrochemically converts into NiO(OH) to perform a similar OER activity. This work understandably demonstrates monoclinic NiMoO₄ to be an inherently unstable electro(pre)catalyst, and its structural evolution to polycrystalline NiO(OH)_ED succeeding the NiO phase is intrinsic to its superior activity.

Aerosol-Assisted Chemical Vapor Deposition Growth of NiMoO4 Nanoflowers on Nickel Foam as Effective Electrocatalysts toward Water Oxidation

The fabrication of active and durable catalysts derived from transition metals is highly desired for the realization of efficient water oxidation reactions. This is particularly important to address the slow oxygen evolution reaction (OER) kinetics and hence can contribute to the conversion and storage of sustainable energy. In this study, the deposition of crystalline flowerlike 2D nanosheets of nickel molybdate (NiMoO4) directly on nickel foam (NF) through an aerosol-assisted chemical vapor deposition process is reported. The NiMoO4 nanosheets were developed on NF by altering the deposition time for 60 and 120 min at a fixed temperature of 480 °C. The structural determination by XRD and XPS analyses revealed a highly crystalline single phase NiMoO4. The micrographs of NiMoO4 show that the surface consisted of vertically aligned 2D nanosheets assembled into flowerlike structures. The nanosheets produced after 60 min deposition time on a network of NF is found to perform better for OER as compared to the one developed for 120 min. A reference current density of 10 mA cm-2 was achieved at an overpotential (η) of 320 mV, which was better as compared to that reported for the benchmark OER catalyst in 1.0 M KOH. Moreover, a small Tafel value (75 mV dec-1) and good OER stability for >15 h were also observed.

From NiMoO4 to γ-NiOOH: Detecting the Active Catalyst Phase by Time Resolved in Situ and Operando Raman Spectroscopy

Water electrolysis powered by renewable energies is a promising technology to produce sustainable fossil free fuels. The development and evaluation of effective catalysts are here imperative; however, due to the inclusion of elements with different redox properties and reactivity, these materials undergo dynamical changes and phase transformations during the reaction conditions. NiMoO4 is currently investigated among other metal oxides as a promising noble metal free catalyst for the oxygen evolution reaction. Here we show that at applied bias, NiMoO4·H2O transforms into γ-NiOOH. Time resolved operando Raman spectroscopy is utilized to follow the potential dependent phase transformation and is collaborated with elemental analysis of the electrolyte, confirming that molybdenum leaches out from the as-synthesized NiMoO4·H2O. Molybdenum leaching increases the surface coverage of exposed nickel sites, and this in combination with the formation of γ-NiOOH enlarges the amount of active sites of the catalyst, leading to high current densities. Additionally, we discovered different NiMoO4 nanostructures, nanoflowers, and nanorods, for which the relative ratio can be influenced by the heating ramp during the synthesis. With selective molybdenum etching we were able to assign the varying X-ray diffraction (XRD) pattern as well as Raman vibrations unambiguously to the two nanostructures, which were revealed to exhibit different stabilities in alkaline media by time-resolved in situ and operando Raman spectroscopy. We advocate that a similar approach can beneficially be applied to many other catalysts, unveiling their structural integrity, characterize the dynamic surface reformulation, and resolve any ambiguities in interpretations of the active catalyst phase.

Phosphorus doping and phosphates coating for nickel molybdate/nickel molybdate hydrate enabling efficient overall water splitting

Earth-abundant transition metal-based bifunctional electrocatalysts are promising alternatives to noble metals for overall water electrolysis, but restricted by low activity and durability. Herein, a three-dimensional phosphorus-doped nickel molybdate/nickel molybdate hydrate @phosphates core-shell nanorod clusters on nickel foam self-supported electrode was fabricated by a combined hydrothermal and phosphating process. The phosphorus doping and phosphate coating induced by phosphating process bring in a synergistic effect to improve the electrical conductivity, provide abundant active surface sites and accelerate the surface reaction for nickel molybdate/nickel molybdate hydrate (NiMoO₄/NiMoO₄·nH₂O) heterostructures. These advantages enable the self-supported electrode to exhibit high hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) activity in 1.0 M KOH with low overpotentials of 148 and 260 mV at 10 mA cm^-2, respectively. When it was employed both as anode and cathode, a cell voltage of 1.62 V is only required to reach the current density of 10 mA cm^-2 in alkaline solution. Especially, the self-supported electrode reveals outstanding durability, which could maintain over 25 h at 10 mA cm^-2 for HER, OER or overall water splitting. This work provides a novel avenue to enhance the electrocatalytic performance of the catalysts by synergistically modulating the intrinsic electrical conductivity, active surface sites and surface reaction.

NiMoO4 nanorods photocatalytic activity comparison under UV and visible light

Waste water remediation is the ongoing hot research topic that can reduce the water scarcity all over the world. By reducing the pollutants in the waste water drawn from industries and other sources will be more useful for domestic purposes. To reduce the rate of pollutants in water may also help in improving the aquatic environment and decreases other side effects. Efficient and cost effective catalysts were in search for both dye degradation and water remediation treatment applications. NiMoO₄ nanorods were prepared by employing co-precipitation method with different stirrer time (2 h, 4 h and 6 h). The formation of NiMoO₄ was substantiated employing X-ray diffractometer analysis (XRD). Vibrational and rotational property of the samples was analyzed by FT-IR spectra and Raman spectra. The optical property was further confirmed by UV-vis spectral studies. Morphological analysis studies revealed growth of nanorods with 6 h stirrer time. The photocatalytic behavior of the obtained product was carried out under both UV light (364 nm) and visible light irradiation. The samples subjected to visible light environment showed better efficiency on degrading the methylene blue (MB) dye. The efficiency obtained under UV irradiation were 20%, 31%, 33%, 41% and efficiency obtained in visible light irradiation were 27%, 42%, 46%, 55% with respect to bare methylene blue (MB), MB with NiMoO₄ (2 h), MB with NiMoO₄ (4 h), MB with NiMoO₄ (6 h) catalyst added. NiMoO₄ sample with 6 h stirrer time and fine nanorods growth will be the good candidate for future use.

Molybdenum-titanium oxo-cluster, an efficient electrochemical catalyst for the facile preparation of black titanium dioxide film

Black-TiO₂ has become increasingly interesting as a promising photoactive material. Most of the preparations for black-TiO₂ involve either high temperature calcination, plasma, lengthy chemical reactions or dealing with dangerous or toxic chemicals. We found, by accident, that Mo-Ti oxo-clusters are efficient catalysts for the hydrogenation of a TiO₂ electrode to black-TiO₂ at room temperature. A series of Mo-Ti oxo-clusters, [Ti₄Mo₄O₁₀(OR)₁₄(X-BA)₂] (BA = benzoate, X = H (1), F (2), Cl (3), and Br (4)), were prepared and were characterized by crystallography. They have a Mo₄Ti₄ structure with Mo(v)-Mo(v) metal-metal interactions. The activated hydrogen (H*) generated by electrochemically catalytic water splitting turns the TiO₂ electrode to black-TiO₂ at room temperature, due to the reduction of Ti(iv) to H⁺Ti(iii). The potentials applied for water reduction must generally be higher than the overpotential at the TiO₂ electrode (-1.0 V vs. RHE). In this work, the onset potential of hydrogen evolution significantly decreased to -0.1 V vs. RHE. Using this blackened 1-TiO₂ electrode, the effective electrochemical catalytic degradation of a dye was examined in comparison with the degradation using the white TiO₂ electrode. This work provides a method for the facile preparation of a black-TiO₂ film, and is a step forward in black-TiO₂ research.

Efficient bifunctional catalysts for overall water splitting: porous Fe-Mo oxide hybrid nanorods

Efficient and inexpensive bifunctional catalysts for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) are essential for water splitting. Herein, we successfully prepare porous Fe-Mo oxide hybrid nanorods through a hydrothermal method followed by annealing at high temperature. They exhibit excellent catalytic activity for OER and HER in alkaline media, and produce a current density of 10 mA cm-2 at overpotentials of 200 and 66 mV. Besides, they work as bifunctional electrode materials for overall water splitting, achieving a current density of 10 mA cm-2 at a voltage of 1.52 V, and maintaining a current density of 60 mA cm-2 for 60 h. The unique morphology with self-supported structure can expose more active sites and facilitate charge transfer, and is not easy to peel off, thus it improves the catalytic activity and stability. This work therefore provides a valuable route for designing and fabricating inexpensive and high-performance catalytic materials for overall water splitting.

Heterostructured NiFe oxide/phosphide nanoflakes for efficient water oxidation

To realise the gradual replacement of noble metal-based materials for electrocatalytic energy conversion, numerous studies need to be focused on the compounds based on inexpensive 3d transition metals (such as Fe and Co). For achieving energetic electrocatalysis, elaborately designed nanostructures are urgently desired. Here, we reported a facile approach for the preparation of a NiFe oxide/phosphide (Ni_2/3Fe_1/3O/Ni_4/3Fe_2/3P) heterostructure with a 2-dimensional (2D) nanoflake-like morphology. Based on the combined advantages of composition and structure, the 2D Ni_2/3Fe_1/3O/Ni_4/3Fe_2/3P nanoflakes were characterized to exhibit a high activity for the electrocatalytic water oxidation, surpassing that of individual Ni_2/3Fe_1/3O or Ni_4/3Fe_2/3P nanoplates. This result may offer a great possibility of delicatedly designing nanostructures for highly efficient electrochemical energy conversion.

Spinel oxide CoFe2O4 grown on Ni foam as an efficient electrocatalyst for oxygen evolution reaction

The effect of the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is important in water splitting. In this work, we develop sphere-like morphology spinel oxide CoFe2O4/NF by hydrothermal reaction and calcination, and the diameter of the spheres is about 111.1 nm. The CoFe2O4/NF catalyst exhibits excellent electrocatalytic performance with an overpotential of 273 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm-2 and a Tafel slope of 78 mV dec-1. The cycling stability of CoFe2O4/NF is remarkable, and it only increased by 5 mV at a current density of 100 mA cm-2 after 3000 cycles. Therefore, this simple method to prepare CoFe2O4/NF can enhance the OER properties of electrocatalysts, which makes CoFe2O4/NF a promising material to replace noble metal-based catalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction.
