Influence of the acidity of solid catalyst HSO3-ZSM-5 on the hydrolysis of pretreated corncob

Effect of SiO2/Al2O3 ratio on the electrochemical performance of amorphous zeolite loaded with cobalt oxide grown via steam-assisted crystallization method

Improving the performance of a supercapacitor is one of the main approaches to solve the energy shortage problem. Electrode material is one of the key components limiting the efficiency of a supercapacitor. Discovering, tuning, and improving electrode materials are very important. This work reports the effect of SiO2/Al2O3 ratio on electrochemical performances of amorphous zeolites ZSM5 (AZ) and H-ZSM5 (H-AZ) loaded with cobalt oxide. Two SiO2/Al2O3 ratios (1 = 6.2 and 2 = 8.3) of AZ1, AZ2 and H-AZ1, H-AZ2 were synthesized by a facile impregnation method. Then, controlled masses of cobalt oxide were introduced to enhance the supercapacitive performances of the amorphous zeolite. Investigation of the SiO2/Al2O3 ratio in the cobalt oxide/zeolite composite (Co/AZ and Co/H-AZ) was carried out to unveil its effect on the electrochemical properties. Worthy of note is the fact that the resulting electrode materials exhibited supercapacitive behavior that is effective over a potential window ranging from 0 to 0.5 V in potassium hydroxide (1 M KOH) aqueous electrolyte. Results from Galvanometry Charging and Discharging (GCD) analyses show that the modified Ni-foam electrodes loaded with Co/H-AZ1 and Co/H-AZ2 are capable of delivering a relatively high specific capacity from 45.97 mA h g-1 to a high value of 72.5 mA h g-1 at 1 A g-1 and Ni-foam electrodes loaded with Co/AZ1 and Co/AZ2 exhibited values from 26 mA h g-1 to 52.83 mA h g-1 respectively. It is clearly shown that, when the mass ratio SiO2/Al2O3 increases, the specific capacity increases as well. It was also noticed that after 2000 cycles, Co/H-AZ1 and Co/AZ1 have a poor coulombic efficiency while Co/H-AZ2 and Co/AZ2 exhibited 98% for coulombic efficiency. Finally, this study shows that to fabricate high performance supercapacitors with amorphous zeolite loaded with cobalt oxide, one should keep the ratio of SiO2/Al2O3 as high as possible during synthesis.

Conversion of bio-derived crude glycerol into renewable high-octane gasoline-stock

Here, we report an efficient catalytic process that operates on a bi-metallic ZSM-5 supported catalyst (0.1Ga-1Zn/ZSM-5) for 100% carbon conversion of glycerol to produce 71.4C% liquid fuel-stock possessing a high concentration of alkyl-aromatics and octane potential (>97 RON) for fuel applications, achieved and reported for the first time to the best of our knowledge. In addition, the H₂-rich (36 mol%) gas stream produced as a byproduct is attractive for green fuel applications. The process adds up to an ∼80% increase in the value addition of bio-glycerol, which improves the overall fuel yield of the biodiesel production process towards improved atom efficiency and process economy.

Optimisation of glucose and levulinic acid production from the cellulose fraction of giant reed (Arundo donax L.) performed in the presence of ferric chloride under microwave heating

A two-step exploitation of the giant reed cellulose to glucose and levulinic acid, after the complete removal of the hemicellulose fraction, was investigated using FeCl₃ as catalyst. In the first step, the microwave-assisted hydrolysis of cellulose to glucose was optimised by response surface methodology analysis, considering the effect of temperature, reaction time and catalyst amount. Under the optimised reaction conditions, the glucose yield was 39.9 mol%. The cellulose-rich residue was also converted by enzymatic hydrolysis, achieving the glucose yield of 39.8 mol%. The exhausted residue deriving from the chemical hydrolysis was further converted to levulinic acid by microwave treatment at harsher reaction conditions. The maximum levulinic acid yield was 64.3 mol%. On the whole, this cascade approach ensured an extensive and sustainable exploitation of the C6 carbohydrates to glucose and levulinic acid, corresponding to about 70 mol% of glucan converted to these valuable bioproducts in the two steps.

Kinetic analysis and catalytic pyrolysis of spent medicinal herb over HZSM-5 and HY

In this study, the kinetic analysis on the pyrolysis of a spent medicinal herb, namely spent Achyranthes root, is performed using a thermogravimetric analyzer and a model-free kinetic analysis method, allowing the calculation of activation energy values without the assumption of kinetic model. Owing to the structural change of lignin and elimination of hemicellulose during the decoction of raw Achyranthes root, the thermogravimetric analysis results show a large difference between the derivative thermogravimetry curves of spent and raw Achyranthes roots. The average apparent activation energy value of spent Achyranthes root, obtained from the non-isothermal thermogravimetric analysis, are found to be lower than those of raw Achyranthes root. This comes as a result of the much lower content of hemicellulose in spent Achyranthes root caused by the hemicellulose elimination from raw Achyranthes root during the decoction process. The catalytic fast pyrolysis of spent Achyranthes root over HZSM5-30 (HZSM-5 with SiO₂/Al₂O₃ = 30) and HY30 (HY with SiO₂/Al₂O₃ = 30) was performed using a two-stage fixed-bed reactor system. The catalytic fast pyrolysis of spent Achyranthes root over both HY30 and HZSM5-30 produced the much larger amount of aromatic hydrocarbons, compared to the non-catalytic fast pyrolysis, with a parallel decrease of oxygen-containing pyrolyzates. Owing to its robust pore structure and high acidity, it was the HZSM5-30 that produced the highest quality oil during the catalytic fast pyrolysis of spent Achyranthes root, having higher selectivity of mono-aromatic hydrocarbons compared to HY30.

Multi-Step Exploitation of Raw Arundo donax L. for the Selective Synthesis of Second-Generation Sugars by Chemical and Biological Route

Lignocellulosic biomass represents one of the most important feedstocks for future biorefineries, being a precursor of valuable bio-products, obtainable through both chemical and biological conversion routes. Lignocellulosic biomass has a complex matrix, which requires the careful development of multi-step approaches for its complete exploitation to value-added compounds. Based on this perspective, the present work focuses on the valorization of hemicellulose and cellulose fractionsof giant reed (Arundo donax L.) to give second-generation sugars, minimizing the formation of reaction by-products. The conversion of hemicellulose to xylose was undertaken in the presence of the heterogeneous acid catalyst Amberlyst-70 under microwave irradiation. The effect of the main reaction parameters, such as temperature, reaction time, catalyst, and biomass loadings on sugars yield was studied, developing a high gravity approach. Under the optimised reaction conditions (17 wt% Arundo donax L. loading, 160 °C, Amberlyst-70/Arundo donax L. weight ratio 0.2 wt/wt), the xylose yield was 96.3 mol%. In the second step, the cellulose-rich solid residue was exploited through the chemical or enzymatic route, obtaining glucose yields of 32.5 and 56.2 mol%, respectively. This work proves the efficiency of this innovative combination of chemical and biological catalytic approaches, for the selective conversion of hemicellulose and cellulose fractions of Arundo donax L. to versatile platform products.

Production of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) from rice-straw biomass using a HSO3–ZSM-5 zeolite catalyst under assistance of sonication

This work studied the application of sulfonated ZSM-5 zeolite, a bi-functional catalyst for conversion of biomass-derived glucose to HMF. Glucose hydrolysate was obtained by enzymatic hydrolysis of rice straw, that was pretreated by sodium hydroxide. Glucose hydrolysate was then subjected to a transformation reaction to achieve HMF using HSO₃–ZSM-5 zeolite under the assistance of sonication. The reaction conditions including solvent, temperature, catalyst dosage and reaction time were studied. Suitable conditions, which gave the highest yield of HMF of 54.1% have been found. The HSO₃–ZSM-5 zeolite presented a high catalytic efficiency for conversion of glucose to HMF, an important and useful intermediate in the chemical industry.

A porous HSO₃–ZSM-5 zeolite was successfully synthesized and applied for conversion of biomass-derived glucose to HMF.

Synthesis and Characterization of Magnetic Zeolite Y-Palladium-Nickel Ferrite by Ultrasonic Irradiation and Investigating Its Catalytic Activity in Suzuki-Miyaura Cross-Coupling Reactions

Zeolite faujasite is widely used as a catalyst in many industrial catalytic applications. In this study, synthesis and characterization of magnetic zeolite Y-palladium-nickel ferrite were studied. First, palladium nanoparticles were combined with nickel ferrite and then placed on zeolite Y by ultrasonic treatment. The structure and morphology of the synthesized magnetic zeolite Y-palladium-nickel ferrite were characterized using Fourier transform infrared, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray, vibrating sample magnetometer, and inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy analysis. Also, we investigated the catalytic activity of this prepared zeolite in Suzuki-Miyaura coupling reaction between phenylboronic acid and aryl halides. Our study shows that magnetic zeolite Y-palladium-nickel ferrite is a suitable catalyst for Suzuki-Miyaura coupling reaction. Short reaction time, high yield, and easy reusability are the advantages of using this catalyst in carbon-carbon cross-coupling reactions.
