Silver-modified porous polystyrene sulfonate derived from Pickering high internal phase emulsions for capturing lithium-ion

Sulfonate-Modified Polystyrene Nanoparticle at Precited Environmental Concentrations Induces Transgenerational Toxicity Associated with Increase in Germline Notch Signal of Caenorhabditis elegans

Recently, the transgenerational toxicity of nanoplastics has received increasing attention. Caenorhabditis elegans is a useful model to assess the transgenerational toxicity of different pollutants. In nematodes, the possibility of early-life exposure to sulfonate-modified polystyrene nanoparticle (PS-S NP) causing transgenerational toxicity and its underlying mechanisms were investigated. After exposure at the L1-larval stage, transgenerational inhibition in both locomotion behavior (body bend and head thrash) and reproductive capacity (number of offspring and fertilized egg number in uterus) was induced by 1-100 μg/L PS-S NP. Meanwhile, after exposure to 1-100 μg/L PS-S NP, the expression of germline lag-2 encoding Notch ligand was increased not only at the parental generation (P0-G) but also in the offspring, and the transgenerational toxicity was inhibited by the germline RNA interference (RNAi) of lag-2. During the transgenerational toxicity formation, the parental LAG-2 activated the corresponding Notch receptor GLP-1 in the offspring, and transgenerational toxicity was also suppressed by glp-1 RNAi. GLP-1 functioned in the germline and the neurons to mediate the PS-S NP toxicity. In PS-S NP-exposed nematodes, germline GLP-1 activated the insulin peptides of INS-39, INS-3, and DAF-28, and neuronal GLP-1 inhibited the DAF-7, DBL-1, and GLB-10. Therefore, the exposure risk in inducing transgenerational toxicity through PS-S NP was suggested, and this transgenerational toxicity was mediated by the activation of germline Notch signal in organisms.

The effect of explicit counterion binding on the transference number of polyelectrolyte solutions

Polyelectrolyte solutions have been proposed as a method to improve the efficiency of lithium-ion batteries by increasing the cation transference number because the polymer self-diffusion coefficient is much lower than that of the counterion. However, this is not necessarily true for the polymer mobility. In some cases, negative transference numbers have been reported, which implies that the lithium ions are transporting to the same electrode as the anion, behavior that is often attributed to a binding of counterions to the polyion. We use a simple model where we bind some counterions to the polymer via harmonic springs to investigate this phenomenon. We find that both the number of bound counterions and the strength of their binding alter the transference number, and, in some cases, the transference number is negative. We also investigate how the transference number depends on the Manning parameter, the ratio of the Bjerrum length to charge separation along the chain. By altering the Manning parameter, the transference number can almost be doubled, which suggests that charge spacing could be a way to increase the transference number of polyelectrolyte solutions.

Fundamentals and Design-Led Synthesis of Emulsion-Templated Porous Materials for Environmental Applications

Emulsion templating is at the forefront of producing a wide array of porous materials that offers interconnected porous structure, easy permeability, homogeneous flow-through, high diffusion rates, convective mass transfer, and direct accessibility to interact with atoms/ions/molecules throughout the exterior and interior of the bulk. These interesting features together with easily available ingredients, facile preparation methods, flexible pore-size tuning protocols, controlled surface modification strategies, good physicochemical and dimensional stability, lightweight, convenient processing and subsequent recovery, superior pollutants remediation/monitoring performance, and decent recyclability underscore the benchmark potential of the emulsion-templated porous materials in large-scale practical environmental applications. To this end, many research breakthroughs in emulsion templating technique witnessed by the recent achievements have been widely unfolded and currently being extensively explored to address many of the environmental challenges. Taking into account the burgeoning progress of the emulsion-templated porous materials in the environmental field, this review article provides a conceptual overview of emulsions and emulsion templating technique, sums up the general procedures to design and fabricate many state-of-the-art emulsion-templated porous materials, and presents a critical overview of their marked momentum in adsorption, separation, disinfection, catalysis/degradation, capture, and sensing of the inorganic, organic and biological contaminants in water and air.

Why Lithium Ions Stick to Some Anions and Not Others

Designing battery electrolytes for lithium-ion batteries has been a topic of extensive research for decades. The ideal electrolyte must have a large conductivity as well as high Li⁺ transference number. The conductivity is very sensitive to the nature of the anions and dynamical correlations between ions. For example, lithium bis(trifluoromethane)sulfonimide (LiTFSI) has a large conductivity, but the chemically similar lithium trifluoromethanesulfonate (LiOTf) shows poor conductivity. In this work, we study the binding of Li⁺ to these anions in an ethylene carbonate (EC) solvent using enhanced sampling metadynamics. The evaluated free energies display a large dissociation barrier for LiOTf compared to LiTFSI, suggesting long-lived ion-pair formation in the former but not the latter. We probe these observations via unbiased molecular dynamics simulations and metadynamics simulations of TFSI with a hypothetical OTF-like partial charge model indicating an electrostatic origin for those differences. Our results highlight the deleterious impact of sulfonate groups in lithium-ion battery electrolytes and provide a new basis for the assessment of electrolyte designs.

Recent advances in separation applications of polymerized high internal phase emulsions

Polymerized high internal phase emulsions as highly porous adsorption materials have received increasing attention and wide applications in separation science in recent years due to their remarkable merits such as highly interconnected porosity, high permeability, good thermal and chemical stability, and tailorable chemistry. In this review, we attempt to introduce some strategies to utilize polymerized high internal phase emulsions for separation science, and highlight the recent advances made in the applications of polymerized high internal phase emulsions for diverse separation of small organic molecules, carbon dioxide, metal ions, proteins, and other interesting targets. Potential challenges and future perspectives for polymerized high internal phase emulsion research in the field of separation science are also speculated at the end of this review.

pH-Triggered Drug Release Controlled by Poly(Styrene Sulfonate) Growth Hollow Mesoporous Silica Nanoparticles

In the current report, hollow mesoporous silica (HMS) nanoparticles were successfully prepared by means of a hard-templating method and further modified with poly(styrene sulfonate) (PSS) via radical polymerization. Structural analysis, surface spectroscopy, and thermogravimetric characterization confirmed a successful surface modification of HMS nanoparticles. A hairy PSS was clearly visualized by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy measurement, and it is grown on the surface of HMS nanoparticles. The Brunauer-Emmett-Teller surface area and average pore size of HMS nanoparticles were reduced after surface modification because of the pore-blocking effect, which indicated that the PSS lies on the surface of nanoparticles. Nevertheless, the PSS acts as a "nano-gate" to control the release of curcumin which is triggered by pH. The drug-release profile of unmodified HMS nanoparticles showed a stormed release in both pH 7.4 and 5.0 of phosphate buffer saline buffer solution. However, a slow release (9.92% of cumulative release) of curcumin was observed at pH 7.4 when the surface of HMS nanoparticles was modified by PSS. The kinetic release study showed that the curcumin release mechanism from PSS@HMS nanoparticles followed the Ritger-Peppas kinetic model, which is the non-Fickian diffusion. Therefore, the PSS-decorated HMS nanoparticles demonstrate potential for pH-triggered drug release transport.

Ultrathin metal/covalent-organic framework membranes towards ultimate separation

Metal/covalent-organic framework (MOF/COF) membranes have attracted increasing research interest and have been considered as state-of-the-art platforms applied in various environment- and energy-related separation/transportation processes. To break the trade-off between permeability and selectivity to achieve ultimate separation, recent studies have been oriented towards how to design and exploit ultrathin MOF/COF membranes (i.e. sub-1 μm-thick). Given great advances made in the past five years, it is valuable to timely and systematically summarize the recent development and shed light on the future trend in this multidisciplinary field. In this review, we first present the advanced strategies in fabricating ultrathin defect-free MOF/COF membranes such as in situ growth, contra-diffusion method, layer-by-layer (LBL) assembly, metal-based precursor as the pre-functionalized layer, interface-assisted strategy, and laminated assembly of MOF/COF nanosheets. Then, the recent progress in some emerging applications of ultrathin MOF/COF membranes beyond gas separation is highlighted, including water treatment and seawater desalination, organic solvent nanofiltration, and energy-related separation/transportation (i.e. lithium ion separation and proton conductivity). Finally, some unsolved scientific and technical challenges associated with future perspectives in this field are discussed, inspiring the development of next-generation separation membranes.
