Synthesis and characterization of a surface-grafted Pb(ii)-imprinted polymer based on activated carbon for selective separation and pre-concentration of Pb(ii) ions from environmental water samples

Adsorptive removal of benzene and toluene from aqueous solutions by oxygen-functionalized multi-walled carbon nanotubes derived from rice husk waste: A comparative study

One of the current directions for sustainable development is to use waste resources to create materials that reduce environmental pollution. In this study, multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) and their oxygen-functionalized forms (HNO₃/H₂SO₄-oxidized MWCNT, NaOCl-oxidized MWCNT, and H₂O₂-oxidized MWCNT) were first synthesized from activated carbon (AC) derived from rice husk waste. A comprehensive comparison of the morphological and structural properties of these materials was conducted using FT-IR, BET, XRD, SEM, TEM, TGA, Raman spectroscopy, and surface charge analysis. The morphology study suggests that the synthesized MWCNTs have an average outer and inner diameter of about 40 and 20 nm, respectively. Additionally, the NaOCl-oxidized MWCNT possesses the largest interspaces between nanotubes, while the HNO₃/H₂SO₄-oxidized CNT has the most oxygen-functional groups, including -COOH, (Ar)-OH, and C-OH. The adsorption capacities of these materials were also compared for the removal of benzene and toluene. Experimental results have shown that while porosity is the primary factor governing the benzene and toluene adsorption onto AC, functionalization degree and surface chemical characteristics are the determining factors in the adsorption capacity of the as-prepared MWCNTs. The adsorption capacity of these aromatic compounds in an aqueous solution increases in the following order: AC < MWCNT < HNO₃/H₂SO₄-oxidized MWCNT < H₂O₂-oxidized MWCNT < NaOCl-oxidized MWCNT, and in all cases, toluene is more readily adsorbed than benzene under similar adsorption conditions. Wherein the uptake of both pollutants by the prepared adsorbents in this study is best described by the Langmuir isotherm and obeys the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The adsorption mechanism was discussed in a detailed manner.

Field specific capture of Pb(II) in aqueous samples with three channels in-tip microextraction apparatus based on ion-imprinted polymer

On-site specific capture is a critical step in accurate analysis of trace Pb(II) in environmental waters. In this connection, a new Pb(II)-imprinted polymer-based adsorbent (LIPA) was in-situ prepared in pipette tip and used as the extraction medium of laboratory-made portable three channels in-tip microextraction apparatus (TIMA). Density function theory was employed to verify the selection of functional monomers for the preparation of LIPA. The physical and chemical properties of the prepared LIPA were inspected with various characterization techniques. Under the beneficial preparation parameters, the LIPA presented satisfactory specific recognition performance towards Pb(II). Selectivity coefficients of LIPA towards Pb(II)/Cu(II) and Pb(II)/Cd(II) were 6.82 and 3.27 times higher than that of non-imprinted polymer-based adsorbent, respectively, and the adsorption capacity towards Pb(II) was as high as 36.8 mg/g. Freundlich isotherm model fitted well with the adsorption data, revealing that the adsorption of Pb(II) on LIPA was a multilayer process. After optimizing the extraction conditions, the developed LIPA/TIMA was employed to field selectively separate and enrich trace Pb(II) in various environmental waters followed by quantification with atomic absorption spectrometry. The enhancement factor, linear range, limit of detection and RSDs for precision were 183, 0.50-10000 ng/L, 0.14 ng/L and 3.2-8.4%, respectively. Accuracy of the developed approach was inspected by means of spiked recovery and confirmation experiments. Achieved results reveal that the developed LIPA/TIMA technique is good for field selective separation and preconcentration of Pb(II) and the introduced approach can be used to measure ultra-trace Pb(II) in a variety of waters.

One Pot Generation of Blue and Red Carbon Dots in One Binary Solvent System for Dual Channel Detection of Cr3+ and Pb2+ Based on Ion Imprinted Fluorescence Polymers

Blue and red dual channel dual emission carbon dots (DDCDs) were synthesized by a one-step hydrothermal method in water-formamide binary system using citric acid and ethylenediamine as precursors. Then, the as-prepared DDCDs were directly employed for preparation of ion imprinted fluorescence polymers without further separation. Since Cr³⁺ can only quench the fluorescence of blue CDs, while Pb²⁺ only quenches the fluorescence of red CDs, dual channel detection of Cr³⁺ and Pb²⁺ can be achieved simultaneously based on ion imprinted fluorescence polymers. Under optimized conditions, the quenching effect [(F₀ - F)/F₀] at 440 nm for the blue channel against the concentration of Cr³⁺ was linear from 0.1 to 6.0 μM, while that for the red channel at 580 nm against the concentration of Pb²⁺ was linear from 0.1 to 5.0 μM. The detection limits for Cr³⁺ and Pb²⁺ can reach 27 nM and 34 nM, respectively. Satisfied recoveries have also been obtained for detection of Cr³⁺ and Pb²⁺ in real water samples. The application of this dual channel detection method will greatly simplify the heavy metal ion detection process in complicated water environments.

Selected pharmaceuticals removal using algae derived porous carbon: experimental, modeling and DFT theoretical insights

Porous carbon from Laminaria digitata algae activated using NaOH (PCLD@NaOH) was prepared by a chemical activation approach and has been tested for the adsorption of ketoprofen and aspirin molecules. The prepared PCLD@NaOH was characterized using XPS, FTIR, Raman, N2-physisorption, SEM, acidic/basic character (Boehm), and pHPZC. The batch adsorption of ketoprofen and aspirin was investigated under different parameters. The adsorption kinetics on PCLD@NaOH were well described by the Avrami-fractional kinetic model and the equilibrium data by Liu isotherm model. The adsorption capacity of aspirin (970.88 mg g-1 at 25 °C) was higher than ketoprofen (443.45 mg g-1 at 25 °C). The thermodynamic values indicate that the adsorption of ketoprofen and aspirin is exothermic and spontaneous. These results were in good agreement with DFT calculation that shows that the aspirin molecule presents high reactivity, electrophilicity, and softness compared to the ketoprofen molecule. Finally, the response surface methodology was used to optimize the removal efficiency of ketoprofen and aspirin.
