Origin of the isotropic motion in crystalline molecular rotors with carbazole stators

Solid-State 2H NMR Study for Deuterated Phenylene Dynamics in a Crystalline Gyroscope-Like Molecule

Molecular rotors have earned substantial popularity in recent times, owing to the unique dependence of its crystalline properties on the rotational dynamics of the rotor. We have recently reported the synthesis and crystal structure of a phenylene-bridged macrocage as a gyroscope-like molecule in the crystalline state. The dynamics of the phenylene moiety was probed by solid-state 13C CP/MAS proton dipolar dephasing NMR spectroscopy. Herein, solid-state 2H NMR studies were performed to study the dynamics of the gyroscope-like molecule with a deuterated rotor in the crystalline state. A spectrum with a narrow line shape was obtained at 300 K. The facile exchange among three stationary states, which was observed by X-ray crystallography, was clearly confirmed. Additionally, a crystal-to-crystal phase transition that switches the motion of the rotor was observed in the DSC analysis of the powdered sample.

Copper-Linked Rotaxanes for the Building of Photoresponsive Metal Organic Frameworks with Controlled Cargo Delivery

We have prepared a photoresponsive metal-organic framework by using an amide-based [2]rotaxane as linker and copper(II) ions as metal nodes. The interlocked linker was obtained by the hydrogen bond-directed approach employing a fumaramide thread as template of the macrocyclic component, this latter incorporating two carboxyl groups. Single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis of the metal-organic framework, prepared under solvothermal conditions, showed the formation of stacked 2D rhombohedral grids forming channels decorated with the interlocked alkenyl threads. A series of metal-organic frameworks differing in the E/Z olefin ratio were prepared either by the previous isomerization of the linker or by postirradiation of the reticulated materials. By dynamic solid state ²H NMR measurements, using deuterium-labeled materials, we proved that the geometry of the olefinic axis of the interlocked struts determined the obtention of materials with different independent local dynamics as a result of the strength of the intercomponent noncovalent interactions. Moreover, the usefulness of these novel copper-rotaxane materials as molecular dosing containers has also been assayed by the diffusion and photorelease of p-benzoquinone, evaluated in different solvents and temperatures.

The evolution of molecular machines through interfacial nanoarchitectonics: from toys to tools

Molecular machines are often regarded as molecular artworks and sometimes as fancy molecular toys. However, many researchers strive to operate molecular machines as useful tools for realistic practical applications. In this perspective article, shifting the working environment of molecular machines from solution to interfacial media is discussed from the viewpoint of their evolution from scientific toys to useful tools. Following a short description of traditional research into molecular machines in solution and their nanotechnological manipulation on clean solid surfaces, pioneering research into molecular machine operation at dynamic interfaces, such as liquid surfaces, is discussed, along with cutting-edge research into molecular machine functions in living cells and their models. Biomolecular machines within organisms are the products of evolution over billions of years. We may nanoarchitect such sophisticated functional systems with artificial molecular machines within much shorter periods.

Cu(I)-Catalyzed Ligand-Free Tandem One-Pot or Sequential Annulation via Knoevenagel Intermediates: An Entry into Multifunctional Naphthalenes, Phenanthrenes, Quinolines, and Benzo[b]carbazoles

A simple but efficient one-pot or sequential copper-catalyzed protocol using 2-bromoaldehydes and active methylene group containing substrates that affords multifunctional naphthalenes, phenanthrenes, quinolines, and benzo[b]carbazoles via Knoevenagel condensation, C-arylation, and decarboxylation, followed by aromatization, is developed. The reaction utilizes the potential of Knoevenagel intermediates and does not require any ancillary ligand. The phenanthrene products thus obtained show moderate fluorescence activity. Structural elaboration of the products to obtain dihydrobenzoquinazolines is also highlighted.

Dynamic characterization of crystalline fluorophores with conformationally flexible tetrahydrocarbazole frameworks

Fluorescent compounds 2 and 3 have been prepared by using Ullmann-type coupling reactions. Solid-state NMR (¹³C CPMAS and ²H) and periodic DFT computations were used to determine that intramolecular motion coexists with emission in these crystals.

Triggering the dynamics of a carbazole-p-[phenylene-diethynyl]-xylene rotor through a mechanically induced phase transition
