Abstract
Herein, we report nickel(0)-catalyzed cross-coupling reactions of NHC/CAAC-based carbodicarbene (NHC = N-heterocyclic carbene and CAAC = cyclic(alkyl)(amino)carbene) with different aryl chlorides, bromides, and iodides. The resulting aryl-substituted cationic carbodicarbene derivatives are prone to one-electron oxidation yielding radical-dications, which, depending on the aryl motif employed, follow different modes of radical-radical dimerization and constitute an entry point to carbon/nitrogen- and nitrogen/nitrogen-centered diradicaloids. Subsequently, this coupling strategy was strategically applied to the synthesis of p-phenylene- and p,p'-biphenylene-bridged carbon/carbon-centered electron-deficient diradicaloids. The employed π-conjugated spacer plays a crucial role in determining the triplet population at room temperature by modulation of the singlet-triplet gap: EPR inactive for p-phenylene vs EPR active for p,p'-biphenylene. Nearly two decades after the disclosure of carbodicarbenes as donor-stabilized atomic carbon equivalents by Tonner and Frenking in 2007, we demonstrate their cross-couplings with a series of aryl halides/dihalides and, based on this, developed a modular methodology for the systematic synthesis of various electron-deficient diradicaloids.

Abstract
Crystalline polymeric structures of trans-1,4-cyclohexylene bridged N-tethered bis-CAACs in the form of their LiOTf adducts were synthesized and isolated. These were further used as building blocks for the synthesis of crystalline (amino)(carboxy)-based diradicals. The triplet diradical character of these compounds was unambiguously confirmed by the presence of a half-field signal in their EPR spectra. Theoretical calculations show that the singlet state is marginally more stable than the triplet state.

Abstract
Reduction of 2-H-substituted pyrrolinium cations via initially formed secondary radicals results in either dimerisation or H-abstracted products, while the outcome depends on the N-substituents. The resultant central carbon-carbon single bond in the dimerised 2,2'-bipyrrolidine derivatives can be oxidised chemically and electrochemically. The notably air and moisture-stable dimers were subsequently utilised as a source of two electrons in various chemical transformations.

Abstract
The isolation of carbon-centered diradicals is always challenging due to synthetic difficulties and their limited stability. Herein we report the synthesis of a trans-1,4-cyclohexylene bridged bis-NHC-CAAC dimer derived thermally stable dicationic diradical. The diradical character of this compound was confirmed by EPR spectroscopy. The variable temperature EPR study suggests the singlet state to be marginally more stable than the triplet state (2J = -5.5 cm-1 (ΔE ST = 0.065 kJ mol-1)). The presence of the trans-1,4-cyclohexylene bridge is instrumental for the successful isolation of this dicationic diradical. Notably, in the case of ethylene or propylene bridged bis-NHC-CAAC dimers, the corresponding dicationic diradicals are transient and rearrange to hydrogen abstracted products.

Abstract
Alkenes are known to undergo oxidation to radical cations and dications. The radical cations are often highly reactive and not stable under air. Herein, we report the synthesis, isolation, characterization, and molecular structure of an alkene-derived radical cation A, which is stable in air both in the solid state and in solution. The access to this compound was facilitated from E-diamino tri-substituted alkene B as a synthon for the synthesis of A through one-electron oxidation. The E-diamino tri-substituted alkene B was synthesized by the two-electron reduction of N,N'-1,2-propylene-bridged bis-2-phenyl-pyrrolinium cation C. Under two-electron oxidation, alkene B transforms back to cation C involving a double carbocation rearrangement.

Abstract
Herein, we report diamidocarbene (DAC)-based Thiele and Tschitschibabin hydrocarbons, diradicaloids that contain four carbonyl/amido functional groups. The impact of two different π-conjugated spacers, p-phenylene vs p,p'-biphenylene, has been realized. The quantum chemical calculations suggest diamidocarbene (DAC)-based Thiele hydrocarbon (p-phenylene bridged) closed-shell singlet is the ground state, whereas for the diamidocarbene (DAC)-based Tschitschibabin hydrocarbon (p,p'-biphenylene bridged), open-shell singlet is the ground state. The influence of two different π-conjugated spacers also has been reflected in their UV-vis spectra. To gain more information on the diamidocarbene (DAC)-based Thiele and Tschitschibabin hydrocarbons, we have also carried out cyclic voltammetry investigations along with UV-vis-NIR-spectroelectrochemical studies of their corresponding 2-e oxidized product.

Abstract
Herein, we report the synthesis, characterization, and reactivity of α,α'-diamino-p-tetrafluoroquinodimethane, a p-tetrafluorophenylene-bridged monosubstituted carbene-based Thiele's hydrocarbon A. The compound exhibits a reversible two-step one-electron oxidation with a marginally stable radical cation state B. The in situ formation of the radical cation could be confirmed by electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy. Interestingly, α,α'-diamino-p-tetrafluoroquinodimethane fixates atmospheric oxygen to form a 16-membered peroxide-bridged macrocyclic compound C.

Abstract
Carbene-based radicals are important for both fundamental and applied chemical research. Herein, extensive electrochemical investigations of nine different 1,2,3-triazolylidene selenium adducts are reported. It is found that the half-wave potentials of the first reduction of the selones correlate with their calculated LUMO levels and the LUMO levels of the corresponding triazolylidene-based mesoionic carbenes (MICs). Furthermore, unexpected quasi-reversibility of the reduction of two triazoline selones, exhibiting comparable reduction potentials, was discovered. Through UV/Vis/NIR and EPR spectroelectrochemical investigations supported by DFT calculations, the radical anion was unambiguously assigned to be triazoline centered. This electrochemical behavior was transferred to a triazolylidene-type MIC-gold phenyl complex resulting in a MIC-radical coordinated AuI species. Apart from UV-Vis-NIR and EPR spectroelectrochemical investigations of the reduction, the reduced gold-coordinated MIC radical complex was also formed in situ in the bulk through chemical reduction. This is the first report of a monodentate triazolylidene-based MIC ligand that can be reduced to its anion radical in a metal complex. The results presented here provide design principles for stabilizing radicals based on MICs.

Abstract
Herein we report the synthesis and characterization of anionic boron- and carbon-based Kekulé diradicaloids spanned by a p-phenylene bridge. In contrast to Thiele's hydrocarbon, a closed-shell singlet system, they show an appreciable population of the triplet state at room temperature, as evidenced by both NMR and EPR spectroscopy. Moreover, en route to these anionic boron- and carbon-based hetero-diradicaloids, the formation of an isolable diamino(4-diarylboryl-phenyl)methyl radical was observed.

Abstract
Cyclic oxoammonium salts and DMSO are known as important reagents for their diverse and unique reactivity. In the present work, we have studied the reaction of six- and five-membered oxoammonium salts with DMSO. The reaction includes ∼100% selective transfer of the O atom from the >N+═O group to the S atom of DMSO and structural rearrangement of the remaining cationic framework, leading to the formation of hydrolytically unstable iminium salts. The logarithms of the bimolecular rate constants k of the reaction correlated linearly with the reduction potentials E>N+═O/>N-O•, a relationship known for other electrophile-nucleophile combinations. The kinetic data and results of the DFT calculations allow for the suggestion that the studied process proceeds via the prereactive charge-transfer complex >N+═O···S (O)Me2 and its direct concerted rearrangement to the iminium salts. An alternative mechanism that includes intermediate steps with discrete nitrenium cations can be ruled out on the basis of product analysis and DFT computations. The obtained results allow a deeper understanding of the redox chemistry of a pair of nitroxide radicals-oxoammonium cations.

Abstract
Reduction of 1,3-bis(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)-2,4-diphenyl-1H-imidazol-3-ium chloride (1) resulted in the formation of the first structurally characterized imidazole-based radical 2. 2 was established as a single electron transfer reagent by treating it with an acceptor molecule tetracyanoethylene. Moreover, radical 2 was utilized as an organic electron donor in a number of organic transformations such as in activation of an aryl-halide bond, alkene hydrosilylation, and in catalytic reduction of CO2 to methoxyborane, all under ambient temperature and pressure.

Abstract
Thiele, Chichibabin and Müller hydrocarbons are considered as classical Kekulé diradicaloids. Herein we report the synthesis and characterization of acyclic diaminocarbene (ADC)-based Thiele, Chichibabin, and Müller hydrocarbons. The calculated singlet–triplet energy gaps are ΔES–T = −27.96, −3.70, −0.37 kcal mol−1, respectively, and gradually decrease with the increasing length of the π-conjugated spacer (p-phenylene vs. p,p′-biphenylene vs. p,p′′-terphenylene) between the two ADC-scaffolds. In agreement with the calculations, we also experimentally observed the enhancement of paramagnetic diradical character as a function of the length of the π-conjugated spacer. ADC-based Thiele's hydrocarbon is EPR silent and exhibits very well resolved NMR spectra, whereas ADC-based Müller's hydrocarbon displays EPR signals and featureless NMR spectra at room temperature. The spacer also has a strong influence on the UV-Vis-NIR spectra of these compounds. Considering that our methodology is modular, these results provide a convenient platform for the synthesis of an electronically modified new class of carbon-centered Kekulé diradicaloids. We report the synthesis of acyclic diaminocarbene (ADC)-scaffold based Thiele, Chichibabin, and Müller hydrocarbons. Studies support that the singlet-triplet energy gap depends on the π-conjugated spacer between the ADC scaffolds.![]()

Aromaticity and sterics control whether a cationic olefin radical is resistant to disproportionation. Chem Sci 2020; 11:4138-4149. Abstract
We elucidate why some electron rich-olefins such as tetrathiafulvalene (TTF) or paraquat (1,1'-dimethyl-4,4'-bipyridinylidene) form persistent radical cations, whereas others such as the dimer of N,N'-dimethyl benzimidazolin-2-ylidene (benzNHC) do not. Specifically, three heterodimers derived from cyclic (alkyl) (amino) carbenes (CAAC) with N,N'-dimethyl imidazolin-2-ylidene (NHC), N,N'-dimethyl imidazolidin-2-ylidene (saNHC) and N-methyl benzothiazolin-2-ylidene (btNHC) are reported. Whereas the olefin radical cations with the NHC and btNHC are isolable, the NHC compound with a saturated backbone (saNHC) disproportionates instead to the biscation and olefin. Furthermore, the electrochemical properties of the electron-rich olefins derived from the dimerization of the saNHC and btNHC were assessed. Based on the experiments, we propose a general computational method to model the electrochemical potentials and disproportionation equilibrium. This method, which achieves an accuracy of 0.07 V (0.06 V with calibration) in reference to the experimental values, allows for the first time to rationalize and predict the (in)stability of olefin radical cations towards disproportionation. The combined results reveal that the stability of heterodimeric olefin radical cations towards disproportionation is mostly due to aromaticity. In contrast, homodimeric radical cations are in principle isolable, if lacking steric bulk in the 2,2' positions of the heterocyclic monomers. Rigid tethers increase accordingly the stability of homodimeric radical cations, whereas the electronic effects of substituents seem much less important for the disproportionation equilibrium.

Abstract
This work presents a stepwise reversible two‐electron transfer induced hydrogen shift leading to the conversion of a bis‐pyrrolinium cation to an E‐diaminoalkene and vice versa. Remarkably, the forward and the reverse reaction, which are both reversible, follow two completely different reaction pathways. Establishing such unprecedented property in this type of processes was possible by developing a novel synthetic route towards the starting dication. All intermediates involved in both the forward and the backward reactions were comprehensively characterized by a combination of spectroscopic, crystallographic, electrochemical, spectroelectrochemical, and theoretical methods. The presented synthetic route opens up new possibilities for the generation of multi‐pyrrolinium cation scaffold‐based organic redox systems, which constitute decidedly sought‐after molecules in contemporary chemistry.

Abstract
Diradicals have been of tremendous interest for over a century ever since the first reports of p- and m-phenylene-bridged diphenylmethylradicals in 1904 by Thiele and 1915 by Schlenk. Reported here are the first examples of cyclic(alkyl)(amino)carbene (CAAC) analogues of Thiele's hydrocarbon, a Kekulé diradical, and Schlenk's hydrocarbon, a non-Kekulé diradical, without using CAAC as a precursor. The CAAC analogue of Thiele's hydrocarbon has a singlet ground state, whereas the CAAC analogue of Schlenk's hydrocarbon contains two unpaired electrons. The latter forms a dimer, by an intermolecular double head-to-tail dimerization. This straightforward synthetic methodology is modular and can be extended for the generation of redox-active organic compounds.
