A review of advanced helical fibers: formation mechanism, preparation, properties, and applications

As a unique structural form, helical structures have a wide range of application prospects. In the field of biology, helical structures are essential for the function of biological macromolecules such as proteins, so the study of helical structures can help to deeply understand life phenomena and develop new biotechnology. In materials science, helical structures can give rise to special physical and chemical properties, such as in the case of spiral nanotubes, helical fibers, etc., which are expected to be used in energy, environment, medical and other fields. The helical structure also has unique charm and application value in the fields of aesthetics and architecture. In addition, helical fibers have attracted a lot of attention because of their tendrils' vascular geometry and indispensable structural properties. In this paper, the development of helical fibers is briefly reviewed from the aspects of mechanism, synthesis process and application. Due to their good chemical and physical properties, helical fibers have a good application prospect in many fields. Potential problems and future opportunities for helical fibers are also presented for future studies.

Control of Properties through Hydrogen Bonding Interactions in Conjugated Polymers

Molecular design is crucial for endowing conjugated polymers (CPs) with unique properties and enhanced electronic performance. Introducing Hydrogen-bonding (H-bonding) into CPs has been a broadly exploited, yet still emerging strategy capable of tuning a range of properties encompassing solubility, crystallinity, electronic properties, solid-state morphology, and stability, as well as mechanical properties and self-healing properties. Different H-bonding groups can be utilized to tailor CPs properties based on the applications of interest. This review provides an overview of classes of H-bonding CPs (assorted by the different H-bond functional groups), the synthetic methods to introduce the corresponding H-bond functional groups and the impact of H-bonding in CPs on corresponding electronic and materials properties. Recent advances in addressing the trade-off between electronic performance and mechanical durability are also highlighted. Furthermore, insights into future directions and prospects for H-bonded CPs are discussed.

One-Dimensional Helical Nanostructures from the Hierarchical Self-Assembly of an Achiral "Rod-Coil" Alternating Copolymer

The self-assembly of alternating copolymers (ACPs) has attracted considerable interest due to their unique alternating nature. However, compared with block copolymers, their self-assembly behavior has remained much less explored and their reported self-assembled structures are limited. Here, we report the formation of supramolecular helical structures by the self-assembly of an achiral rod-coil alternating copolymer, poly(quarter(3-hexylthiophene)-alt-poly(ethylene glycol)) (P(Q3HT-alt-PEG)). The copolymer exhibited an interesting hierarchical self-assembly process, driven by the π-π stacking of the Q3HT segments and the solvophobic interaction of the alkyl chains in tetrahydrofuran (THF)-isopropanol (iPrOH) mixed solvents. The copolymer first self-assembled into thin nanobelts with a uniform size, then grew to helical nanoribbons and eventually twisted into helical nanowires with an average diameter of 25 ± 9 nm and a mean pitch of 80 ± 10 nm. Dissipative particle dynamics (DPD) simulation supported the formation course of the helical nanowires. Furthermore, the addition of (S)-ethyl lactate and (R)-ethyl lactate in the self-assembly of P(Q3HT-alt-PEG) resulted in the formation of left-handed and right-handed chiral nanowires, respectively, demonstrating the tunability of the chirality of the helical wires. This study expands the library of ordered self-assembled structures of ACPs, and also brings a new strategy and mechanism to construct helical supramolecular structures. Hybrid conjugated polymer/magnetic nanoparticle composite nanofibers through cooperative non-covalent interactions

Hybrid organic-inorganic composites possessing both electronic and magnetic properties are promising materials for a wide range of applications. Controlled and ordered arrangement of the organic and inorganic components is key for synergistic cooperation toward desired functions. In this work, we report the self-assemblies of core-shell composite nanofibers from conjugated block copolymers and magnetic nanoparticles through the cooperation of orthogonal non-covalent interactions. We show that well-defined core-shell conjugated polymer nanofibers can be obtained through solvent induced self-assembly and polymer crystallization, while hydroxy and pyridine functional groups located at the shell of nanofibers can immobilize magnetic nanoparticles via hydrogen bonding and coordination interactions. These precisely arranged nanostructures possess electronic properties intrinsic to the polymers and are simultaneously responsive to external magnetic fields. We applied these composite nanofibers in organic solar cells and found that these non-covalent interactions led to controlled thin film morphologies containing uniformly dispersed nanoparticles, although high loadings of these inorganic components negatively impact device performance. Our methodology is general and can be utilized to control the spatial distribution of functionalized organic/inorganic building blocks, and the magnetic responsiveness and optoelectronic activities of these nanostructures may lead to new opportunities in energy and electronic applications.

Supramolecular nanostructures constructed by rod-coil molecular isomers: effect of rod sequences on molecular assembly

Coil-rod-coil molecules, composed of flexible oligoether chains and conjugated rod blocks, have a well-known ability to produce various nanostructures in bulk and in aqueous solution. Herein we report the synthesis and self-assembly of coil-rod-coil molecules based on the sequence of the rod building block and the type of oligoether coil chain. These molecules consist of conjugated rod segments, which are composed of biphenyl, terphenyl, and acetylenic bonds, with chiral oligoether chains as flexible coil segments. The experimental results imply that the sequence of the rod segments markedly influences the self-assembled nanostructures of coil-rod-coil molecules in the bulk state, and that the type of coil chain strongly affects the morphology of the supramolecular nanoassemblies of these molecules in aqueous solution. In the bulk state, molecules 1a and 1b, which contain biphenyl units connected to the end of the coil segments self-organize into a hexagonal perforated lamellar phase, and oblique columnar and body-centred tetragonal structures, respectively. However, molecules 2a and 2b bearing terphenyl units linked to the end of the coil segments self-assemble into lamellar, hexagonal perforated lamellar and hexagonal columnar structures. In aqueous solution, rod-coil molecular isomers with linear chiral oligoether chains self-assemble into helical nanofibres of various lengths. Meanwhile, isomers with chiral oligoether dendron chains self-organize into sheet-like nanoribbons of different sizes.

Living Supramolecular Polymerization of Rod-Coil Block Copolymers: Kinetics, Origin of Uniformity, and Its Implication

We conduct Brownian dynamics simulations to explore the kinetics of living supramolecular polymerization using seeded growth of rod-coil block copolymers as a model system. We model the kinetics of supramolecular polymerization by developing kinetic theory for classical living covalent polymerization with length-dependent rate coefficients. The rate coefficient in the proposed kinetics theory decreases with increasing cylindrical micelle length, which is attributed to micelle rigidity and unique diffusion behavior. Like living covalent polymerization, living supramolecular polymerization can produce low-dispersity assemblies with rigidity via different mechanisms. The results nicely explain the available experimental observations.
