Cage dynamics leads to double relaxation of the intermediate scattering function in a binary colloidal system

Breaking the size constraint for nano cages using annular patchy particles

Engineering structures like nanocages, shells, and containers, by self-assembly of colloids is a challenging problem. One of the main challenges is to define the shape of the individual subunits to control the radius of the closed shell structures. In this work, we have proposed a simple model for the subunit, which comprises a spheroidal or spherical hardcore decorated with an annular patch. The self-assembly of these building blocks leads to the formation of monodispersed spherical cages (close shells) or containers (curved clusters). For a spheroid with a given bonding range, the curvature of the shell is analytically related to only the patch angle of the building blocks and independent of the shape of the subunits. This model with only one control parameter can be used to engineer cages with the desired radius, which also have been verified using thermodynamic calculations. In the phase diagram of the system, 4 phases are identified which includes gas, closed shell, partially closed (containers) shell and percolated structures. When the diameters of the spherical cages formed are small, we observe an icosahedral symmetry similar to virus capsids. We also observed that the kinetics of the cage formation is very similar to the nucleation and growth kinetics of viruses and is the key factor in determining the yield of closed shells.

Rigidity-Induced Controlled Aggregation of Binary Colloids

Here, we report the proof-of-concept for controlled aggregation in a binary colloidal system. The binary systems are studied by varying bond flexibility of only one species, while the other species' bonds remain fully flexible. By establishing the underlying relation between gelation and bond rigidity, we demonstrate how the interplay among bond flexibility, critical concentration, and packing volume fraction influenced the aggregation kinetics. Our result shows that rigidity in bonds increases the critical concentration for gels to be formed in the binary mixture. Furthermore, the average number of bonded neighbor analyses reveal the influence of bond rigidity both above and below critical concentrations and show that variation in bond flexibility in only one species alters the kinetics of aggregation of both species. This finding improves our understanding of colloidal aggregation in soft and biological systems.

Enhancement in the diffusivity of Brownian spheroids in the presence of spheres

In the present paper, we have extended the simulation technique Brownian cluster dynamics (BCD) to analyze the dynamics of the binary mixture of hard ellipsoids and spheres. The shape dependent diffusional properties have been incorporated into BCD using Perrin's factor and compared with analytical results of a one-component ellipsoidal system. We have investigated pathways to enhance the diffusivity of spheroids in the binary mixture by manipulating the phase behavior of the system through varying the fraction of spheres in the binary mixture. We show that at low volume fraction the spherical particles have a higher diffusion coefficient than the ellipsoids due to the higher friction coefficient. However, at a higher volume fraction, we show that the diffusion coefficient of the ellipsoids increases irrespective of the aspect ratio due to the anisotropic shape.

A fuzzy logic neural network algorithm for compressor crankshaft-rolling bearing system optimization

Taking the crankshaft-rolling bearing system in a certain type of compressor as the research objective, dynamic analysis software is used to conduct detailed dynamic analysis and optimal design under the rated power of the compressor. Using Hertz mathematical formula and the analysis method of the superstatic orientation problem, the relationship expression between the bearing force and deformation of the rolling bearing is solved, and the dynamic analysis model of the elastic crankshaft-rolling bearing system is constructed in the simulation software ADAMS. The weighted average amplitude of the center of the neck between the main bearings is used as the target, and the center line of the compressor cylinder is selected as the design variable. Finally, an example analysis shows that by introducing the fuzzy logic neural network algorithm into the compressor crankshaft-rolling bearing system design, the optimal solution between the design variables and the objective function can be obtained, which is of great significance to the subsequent compressor dynamic design.

Mobile obstacles accelerate and inhibit the bundle formation in two-patch colloidal particle

Aggregation of protein into bundles is responsible for many neurodegenerative diseases. In this work, we show how two-patch colloidal particles self-assemble into chains and a sudden transition to bundles takes place by tuning the patch size and solvent condition. We study the kinetics of formation of chains, bundles, and networklike structures using patchy Brownian cluster dynamics. We also analyze the ways to inhibit and accelerate the formation of these bundles. We show that in the presence of inert immobile obstacles, the kinetics of formation of bundles slows down. However, in the presence of mobile aggregating particles, which exhibit interspecies hard sphere repulsion and intraspecies attraction, the kinetics of bundle formation accelerates slightly. We also show that if we introduce mobile obstacles, which exhibit interspecies attraction and intraspecies hard sphere repulsion, the kinetics of formation of bundles is inhibited. This is similar to the inhibitory effect of peptide P4 on the formation of insulin fibers. We are providing a model of mobile obstacles undergoing directional interactions to inhibit the formation of bundles.
