Structure, rheology, and microrheology of wormlike micelles made of PB-PEO diblock copolymers

Mimicking the Natural World with Nanoarchitectonics for Self-Assembled Superstructures

Scientists are often inspired by nature, where naturally occurring morphologies, such as those that resemble animals and plants, can be created in the lab. In this review, we have provided an overview on complex superstructures of animals, plants and some similar shapes from the natural world. We begin this review with a discussion about the formation of various animal-like shapes from small organic molecules and polymers, and then move onto plants and other selected shapes. Literature surveys reveal that most of the polymers studied tend to form micellar structures, with some exceptions. Nevertheless, small organic molecules tend to form not only micellar structures but also other animal shapes such as worms and caterpillars. These superstructures tend to have high surface areas and variable surface morphology, making them very useful material for applications in various field such as catalysis, solar cells, and biomedicine, amongst others.

Self-assembly of miktoarm palm tree-like star copolymers in a selective solvent

Amphiphilic miktoarm star copolymers with one long solvophobic arm (a "stem") and several short solvophilic arms (the "leaves") were studied in a selective solvent using mesoscopic computer simulations. The conventional morphologies (spherical, cylindrical and vesicular) as well as the mixed ones were obtained. However, the resulting diagram of states appeared to be different from the diagram of the linear diblock copolymer with the analogous composition. Namely, the increase of the number of leaves at fixed solvophobic-solvophilic ratio leads to the transition from the vesicles to the cylinders, while the latter ones eventually transform into spherical micelles in the case of highly branched copolymers. The observed effect appears due to the increase of the interfacial area between the collapsed and swollen blocks per single macromolecule. In turn, the increase of the solvent selectivity shifts the stability region of the cylindrical micelles to the region of more symmetric copolymer composition. Meanwhile, the compatibility between the blocks has a weak effect on the resulting morphology. Finally, it was found that the increase in the number of leaves and the simultaneous decrease in their length results in the localization of higher amount of solvophilic segments near the core-solvent interface, which in the case of cylindrical micelles significantly affects the shape of the aggregates making them thinner and longer.

Measuring mesoscopic scales in complex fluids embedded with giant cylindrical micelles with diffusing wave spectroscopy micro-rheology

This review paper presents a procedure for measuring the mesoscopic scales in micellar solutions embedded with giant cylindrical micelles using the mean square displacement determined with a quasi-elastic multiple light scattering method (diffusing wave spectroscopy) and theory. The mesoscopic scales of interest are the micelles' total contour length, persistence and entanglement lengths, and the mesh size of the entangled micellar network. All of them depend on the physicochemical parameters of the solutions and determine the rheological behavior. We present an assessment of the whole procedure, the scattering experiments performance, the recovery of optical parameters, which includes dealing with the light absorption and its treatment, and how to develop the micro-rheology for obtaining the mesoscopic scales in these complex fluids.

Flower Necklaces of Controllable Length Formed From N-(2-Hydroxypropyl) Methacrylamide-Based Amphiphilic Statistical Copolymers

N-(2-Hydroxypropyl)methacrylamide (HPMA)-based statistical copolymers bearing anticancer drugs have attracted attention for their efficacy in cancer treatments. However, controlling the size and morphology of aggregates of this type of polymer has been challenging and is far from being understood. In this study, small-angle X-ray scattering and asymmetric-flow field-flow fractionation with multiangle light scattering were used to investigate the structure of aggregates formed in aqueous solutions of HPMA-based statistical copolymers of different molecular weights with the model drug pyrene borne in different amounts. The analysis revealed that spherical objects (flower micelles) were formed by the assembly of pyrene moieties in low-molecular-weight copolymers, and the flower micelles connected linearly to form string-of-pearls assemblies (flower necklaces) in high-molecular-weight copolymers. The number of pyrene moieties per polymer chain likely dominates the size and morphology of the copolymer micelles. This study shows how to alter the aggregate structure by changing the molecular weight and composition of copolymers.

Highly viscoelastic films at the water/air interface: α-Cyclodextrin with anionic surfactants

This work showcases the remarkable viscoelasticity of films consisting of α-cyclodextrin (α-CD) and anionic surfactants (S) at the water/air interface, the magnitude of which has not been observed in similar systems. The anionic surfactants employed are sodium salts of a homologous series of n-alkylsulfates (n = 8-14) and of dodecylsulfonate. Our hypothesis was that the very high viscoelasticity can be systematically related to the bulk and interfacial properties of the system. Through resolution of the bulk distribution of species using isothermal titration calorimetry, the high dilatational modulus is related to (α-CD)₂:S₁ inclusion complexes in the bulk with respect to both the bulk composition and temperature. Direct interfacial characterization of α-CD and sodium dodecylsulfate films at 283.15 K using ellipsometry and neutron reflectometry reveals that the most viscoelastic films consist of a highly ordered monolayer of 2:1 complexes with a minimum amount of any other component. The orientation of the complexes in the films and their driving force for adsorption are discussed in the context of results from molecular dynamics simulations. These findings open up clear potential for the design of new functional materials or molecular sensors based on films with specific mechanical, electrical, thermal, chemical, optical or even magnetic properties.
