Mechanics of an adhesive tape in a zero degree peel test: effect of large deformation and material nonlinearity

Understanding the role of crosslink density and linear viscoelasticity on the shear failure of pressure-sensitive-adhesives

Pressure-sensitive-adhesives (PSAs) are ubiquitous in electronic, automobile, packaging, and biomedical applications due to their ability to stick to numerous surfaces without undergoing chemical reactions. Although these materials date back to the 1850s with the development of surgical tapes based on natural rubber, their resistance to shear loads remains challenging to predict from molecular design. This work investigates the role of crosslink density on the shear resistance of model PSAs based on poly(2-ethylhexyl acrylate-co-acrylic acid) physically crosslinked with aluminum acetylacetonate. The key result is that crosslinking PSAs leads to notable stress concentrations ahead of the peel front, as well as a transition from cohesive to adhesive failure. The shear stress distributions, as evaluated by means of a linearly viscoelastic shear lag model, suggest that this transition is related to the evolution of the ratio of the load transfer length to the bond length as dictated by the mechanical properties of the backing and adhesive layers, and the geometry of the tape.

Self-strengthening tape junctions inspired by recluse spider webs

Adhesive tapes are versatile and widely used yet lack adhesion strength due to their tendency to fail via peeling, a weak failure mode. A tape with surprising adhesive properties is the recluse spider's 50 nm-thin silk ribbon with a 1 : 150 aspect ratio. Junctions of these microscopic sticky tapes can withstand the material's tensile failure stress of ≈1 GPa. We modeled these natural tape-tape junctions and revealed a bi-modal failure behavior, critically dependent on the two tapes' intersection angle. One mode leads to regular, low-strength peeling failure, while the other causes the junction to self-strengthen, eliminating the inherent weakness in peeling. This self-strengthening mechanism locks the two tapes together, increasing the junction strength by 550% and allowing some junctions to remain intact after tensile failure. This impressive adhesive strength of tapes has never before been observed or predicted. We found that recluse spiders make tape junctions with pre-stress to force the locked, high-strength failure mode. We used this approach to make junctions with synthetic adhesive tapes that overcame the weak peeling failure.

Time dependent fracture of soft materials: linear versus nonlinear viscoelasticity

Toughness of soft materials such as elastomers and gels depends on their ability to dissipate energy and to reduce stress concentration at the crack tip. The primary energy dissipation mechanism is viscoelasticity. Most analyses and models of fracture are based on linear viscoelastic theory (LVT) where strains are assumed to be small and the relaxation mechanisms are independent of stress or strain history. A well-known paradox is that the size of the dissipative zone predicted by LVT is unrealistically small. Here we use a physically based nonlinear viscoelastic model to illustrate why the linear theory breaks down. Using this nonlinear model and analogs of crack problems, we give a plausible resolution to this paradox. In our model, viscoelasticity arises from the breaking and healing of physical cross-links in the polymer network. When the deformation is small, the kinetics of bond breaking and healing are independent of the strain/stress history and the model reduces to the standard linear theory. For large deformations, localized bond breaking damages the material near the crack tip, reducing stress concentration and dissipating energy at the same time. The damage zone size is a new length scale which depends on the strain required to accelerate bond breaking kinetics. These effects are illustrated by considering two cases with stress concentrations: the evolution of spherical damage in a viscoelastic body subjected to internal pressure, and a zero degree peel test.

Cold Flow Evaluation in Transdermal Drug Delivery Systems by Measuring the Width of the Oozed Adhesive

The objective of this study was to develop a simpler and more practical quantitative evaluation method of cold flow (CF) in transdermal drug delivery systems (TDDSs). CF was forcibly induced by loading a weight on a punched-out sample (bisoprolol and tulobuterol tapes). When the extent of CF was analyzed using the area of oozed adhesive as following a previously reported method, the CF profiles were looked different between the samples 12 mm in diameter subjected to a 0.5-kg weight and samples 24 mm in diameter subjected to a 2.0-kg weight despite an equal load per unit area (4.42 g/mm²). The width of oozed adhesive around the original sample was suggested to be an index that properly describes the relationship between the load per unit area and the extent of CF. Further, it was clarified that the average CF width over the entire circumference of the sample was the same whether the samples were round or square as long as the sample area and load were the same. We also observed a linear relationship between the CF width and the aspect ratio of oval and rectangular samples. These results indicated that the CF properties of typical TDDS products lacking CF-proof processing at the edges could be determined by testing samples cut from the product rather than the whole TDDS patch. The proposed width measuring method was simple and useful for optimizing the composition of the adhesive and for testing the quality of the product.
