Abstract
The reaction of fluoride anions with mononuclear rare-earth(III) complexes of the hexaazamacrocycle derived from 2,6-diformylpyridine and ethylenediamine affords trinuclear coordination compounds [Ln3L3(μ2-F)4(NO3)2](NO3)3. The X-ray crystal structures of these complexes show triplex cationic complexes where the three roughly parallel macrocyclic lanthanide(III) units are linked by bis-μ2-F bridges. The detailed analysis of the photophysical properties of the [Eu3L3(μ2-F)4(NO3)2](NO3)3·2H2O and [Tb3L3(μ2-F)4(NO3)2](NO3)3·3H2O complexes reveals different temperature dependence of luminescence intensity and luminescence decay time of the Eu(III) and Tb(III) derivatives. The spectra of mixed species of average composition [Eu1.5Tb1.5L3(μ2-F)4(NO3)2](NO3)3·3H2O are in accordance with the ratiometric luminescent thermometer behavior. Measurements of the direct-current (dc) magnetic susceptibility of the [Dy3L3(μ2-F)4(NO3)2](NO3)3·2H2O complex indicate possible ferromagnetic interactions between the Dy(III) ions. Alternating current (ac) susceptibility measurements of this complex indicate single-molecule magnet behavior in zero dc field with magnetic relaxation dominated by Orbach mechanism and an effective energy barrier Ueff = 12.3 cm-1 (17.7 K) with a pre-exponential relaxation time, τ0 of 7.3 × 10-6 s. A similar reaction of mononuclear macrocyclic complexes with a higher number of fluoride equivalents results in polymeric {[Ln3L3(μ2-F)5](NO3)4}n complexes. The X-ray crystal structure of the Nd(III) derivative of this type shows trinuclear units that are additionally linked by single fluoride bridges to form a linear coordination polymer.

Abstract
We investigate Dy-based coordination polymer C11H18DyN3O9 (Dy-CP) exhibiting single-ion magnet (SIM) properties, e.g., quantum tunnelling of magnetization (QTM), magnetic anisotropy, magnetic relaxation, and effective energy barrier (Ueff). To elucidate the underlying mechanisms, crystal field parameters (CFPs) for Dy3+ ions were modelled using the radial effective charge model (RECM) and superposition model (SPM), and the computational packages SIMPRE and SPECTRE. The modelled CFPs enable the prediction of the energy levels and associated wave functions, which successfully explain the field-induced Dy-CP SIM properties. The so-calculated magnetic susceptibility and isothermal magnetization match the experimental data reasonably well. The smaller energy separations of the first (Δ0-1 ∼ 31 cm-1) and the second (Δ0-2 = 74 cm-1) excited Kramers doublets suggest small Ueff = 65 cm-1 for Dy-CP. The magnetic moments of Dy3+ ions exhibit an easy-axis type magnetic anisotropy in the ground state, but change orientation in the excited states due to mixing of states from different Kramers doublets. Low-symmetry CF components play a crucial role in connecting different |±MJ〉 states within the ground multiplet, resulting in QTM and magnetic relaxation to the ground state occurring via the excited states. The RECM and SPM calculated CFP sets are standardized employing the 3DD package to enable meaningful comparison and assessing their mutual equivalence. The results demonstrate the correlation between structural and electronic features of the molecule and site symmetry and distortion of the local coordination polyhedra with SIM properties, offering insights for rational design of new SIMs. The importance of considering low-symmetry aspects in CFP modelling for accurate predictions of magnetic properties is highlighted. This study provides deeper understanding of field-induced behaviour in rare-earth-based SIMs and approaches for rationalization of experimentally measured SIMs' properties.

Abstract
Using the existing architecture of [Dy(Tp2-py)F]+ that supports a terminal Dy-F bond, the synthesis and isolation of [Dy(Tp2-py)F(THF)2](PF6) and its diamagnetic yttrium analogue have been achieved. Alternating current magnetic susceptibility studies show an increased effective energy barrier of Ueff = 661(6) cm-1 (951(8) K), the highest yet reported for a high coordinate (n > 8) lanthanide single-ion magnet.

Abstract
Molecular lanthanide (Ln) complexes are promising candidates for the development of next-generation quantum technologies. High-symmetry structures incorporating integer spin Ln ions can give rise to well-isolated crystal field quasi-doublet ground states, i.e., quantum two-level systems that may serve as the basis for magnetic qubits. Recent work has shown that symmetry lowering of the coordination environment around the Ln ion can produce an avoided crossing or clock transition within the ground doublet, leading to significantly enhanced coherence. Here, we employ single-crystal high-frequency electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy and high-level ab initio calculations to carry out a detailed investigation of the nine-coordinate complexes, [HoIIIL1L2], where L1 = 1,4,7,10-tetrakis(2-pyridylmethyl)-1,4,7,10-tetraaza-cyclododecane and L2 = F- (1) or [MeCN]0 (2). The pseudo-4-fold symmetry imposed by the neutral organic ligand scaffold (L1) and the apical anionic fluoride ion generates a strong axial anisotropy with an mJ = ±8 ground-state quasi-doublet in 1, where mJ denotes the projection of the J = 8 spin-orbital moment onto the ∼C4 axis. Meanwhile, off-diagonal crystal field interactions give rise to a giant 116.4 ± 1.0 GHz clock transition within this doublet. We then demonstrate targeted crystal field engineering of the clock transition by replacing F- with neutral MeCN (2), resulting in an increase in the clock transition frequency by a factor of 2.2. The experimental results are in broad agreement with quantum chemical calculations. This tunability is highly desirable because decoherence caused by second-order sensitivity to magnetic noise scales inversely with the clock transition frequency.

Abstract
The fast Raman relaxation process via a virtual energy level has become a puzzle for how to chemically engineer single-molecule magnets (SMMs) with better performance. Here, we use the trifluoromethyl group to systematically substitute the methyl groups in the axial position of the parent bis-butoxide pentapyridyl dysprosium(III) SMM. The resulting complexes-[Dy(OLA )2 py5 ][BPh4 ] (LA =CH(CF3 )2 - 1, CH2 CF3 - 2, CMe2 CF3 - 3)-show progressively enhanced TB hys (@100 Oe s-1 ) from 17 K (for 3), 20 K (for 2) to 23 K (for 1). By experimentally identifying the varied under barrier relaxation energy in the 5-500 cm-1 regime, we are able to identify that the C-F bond related vibration energy of the axial ligand ranging from 200 to 350 cm-1 is the key variant for this improvement. Thus, this finding not only reveals a correlation between the structure and the Raman process but also provides a paradigm for how to apply the vibronic barrier model to analyze multi-phonon relaxation processes in lanthanide SMMs.

A new synthetic method
allows isolating fluoride-bridged complexes
Bu4N{[M(3NO2,5Br-H3L1,1,4)]2(μ-F)} (M = Dy, 1; M = Ho, 2; M = Gd, 3) and Bu4N{[Dy(3Br,5Cl-H3L1,2,4)]2(μ-F)}·2H2O, 4·2H2O. The crystal structures of 1·5CH3C6H5,·2·2H2O·0.75THF, 3, and 4·2H2O·2THF show that all of them are
dinuclear compounds with linear single fluoride bridges and octacoordinated
metal centers. Magnetic susceptibility measurements in the temperature
range of 2–300 K reveal that the GdIII ions in 3 are weakly antiferromagnetically coupled, and this constitutes
the first crystallographically and magnetically analyzed gadolinium
complex with a fluoride bridge. Variable-temperature magnetization
demonstrates a poor magnetocaloric effect for 3. Alternating
current magnetic measurements for 1, 2,
and 4·2H2O bring to light that 4·2H2O is an SMM, 1 shows an
SMM-like behavior under a magnetic field of 600 Oe, while 2 does not show relaxation of the magnetization even under an applied
magnetic field. In spite of this, 2 is the first fluoride-bridged
holmium complex magnetically analyzed. DFT and ab initio calculations support the experimental magnetic results and show
that apparently small structural differences between 1 and 4·2H2O introduce important changes
in the dipolar interactions, from antiferromagnetic in 1 to ferromagnetic in 4·2H2O. Dinuclear linear fluoride single-bridged
DyIII, HoIII, and GdIII complexes
are systematically
obtained from mononuclear aquo-complexes, with the DyIII ones showing slow relaxation of the magnetization and the GdIII one revealing a weak AF coupling through the Gd−F−Gd
bridge.

Abstract

The recently reported
compound [DyIIILF](CF3SO3)2·H2O (L = 1,4,7,10-tetrakis(2-pyridylmethyl)-1,4,7,10-tetraaza-cyclododecane)
displays a strong axial magnetic anisotropy, due to the short axial
Dy–F bond, and single-molecule magnet (SMM) behavior. Following
our earlier [DyIIILF]2+ work, herein we report
the systematic structural and magnetic study of a family of [LnIIILF](CF3SO3)2·H2O compounds (Ln(III) = 1-Ce, 2-Pr, 3-Nd, 4-Eu, 5-Tb, 6-Ho, 7-Er, 8-Tm, and 9-Yb).
From this series, the Ce(III) and Nd(III) analogues show slow relaxation
of the magnetization under an applied direct current magnetic field,
which is modeled using a Raman process. Complete active space self-consistent
field theoretical calculations are employed to understand the relaxation
pathways in 1-Ce and 3-Nd and also reveal
a large tunnel splitting for 5-Tb. Additional computational
studies on model compounds where we remove the axial F– ligand, or replace F– with I–, highlight the importance of the F– ligand in
creating a strong axial crystal field for 1-Ce and 3-Nd and for promoting the SMM behavior. Importantly, this
systematic study provides insight into the magnetic properties of
these lighter lanthanide ions. The
structural and magnetic properties of a family of [LnIIILF](CF3SO3)2·H2O
(L = 1,4,7,10-tetrakis(2-pyridylmethyl)-1,4,7,10-tetraaza-cyclododecane)
compounds are reported. In addition to the previously reported Dy(III)
analogue, we find that the Ce(III) and Nd(III) analogues show slow
relaxation of the magnetization due to the strong axial magnetic anisotropy
created by the axial F− ligand. AC magnetic susceptibility
data and CASSCF theoretical calculations are employed to understand
the single-molecule magnet behavior of 1-Ce and 3-Nd.

Abstract
Herein, we report two mononuclear dysprosium complexes [Dy(H4L){B(OMe)2(Ph)2}2](Cl)·MeOH (1) and [Dy(H4L){MeOH)2(NCS)2}](Cl) (2) [where H4L = 2,2'-(pyridine-2,6-diylbis(ethan-1-yl-1-ylidene))bis(N-phenylhydrazinecarboxamide)] with different axial coordination environments. The structural analysis revealed that the pentadentate H4L ligand binds through the equatorial position in both complexes. In complex 1, the axial positions are occupied by bidentate dimethoxydiphenyleborate [B(OMe)2(Ph)2]-. On the other hand, in complex 2, one axial position is occupied by two NCS- and one MeOH molecule while another MeOH molecule is coordinated to the other axial position. Magnetic measurements disclose the presence of field-induced slow relaxation of magnetization with an energy barrier of Ueff = 30 K for 1 whereas no such effective barrier was observed in complex 2. Detailed analysis of field and temperature dependence of the relaxation time confirms the major role of Raman, QTM, and direct processes rather than the Orbach process in complex 1. It was observed that [B(OMe)2(Ph)2]- provides higher axial anisotropy which slows down the QTM process (relaxation time for the QTM process is 2.70 × 10-5 s) in 1 as compared to NCS anions and MeOH molecules in 2 (1.03 × 10-8 s), and is responsible for the absence of an effective energy barrier in the latter complex as confirmed by ab initio calculations. The calculations also show that the presence of a large bidentate dimethoxydiphenyleborate ligand in axial positions may result in high-performance Dy-based single-ion magnets.

Abstract
The recent years have witnessed the glory development for the construction of high-performance mononuclear single molecule magnets (SMMs) within a specific coordination geometry, which, however, is not well applied in cluster-based SMMs due to the synthetic challenges. Given that the monocobalt(II) complexes within a trigonal-prismatic (TPR) coordination geometry have been classified as excellent SMMs with huge axial anisotropy (D ≈ -100 cm-1), here we designed and synthesized a new dual-capping tetrazine ligand, 3,6-bis(6-(di(1H-pyrazol-1-yl)methyl)pyridin-2-yl)-1,2,4,5-tetrazine (bpptz), and prepared a novel dicobalt(II) complex, [Cp2CoIII][{(hfac)CoII}2(bpptz•-)][hfac]2·2Et2O (1, hfac = hexafluoroacetylacetonate). In the structure of 1, the bpptz•- radical ligand enwraps two Co(II) centers within quasi-TPR geometries, which are further bridged by the tetrazine radical in the trans mode. The magnetic study revealed that the interaction between the Co centers and the tetrazine radical is strongly antiferromagnetic with a coupling constant (J) of -65.8 cm-1 (in the -2J formalism). Remarkably, 1 exhibited the typical SMM behavior with an effective energy barrier of 69 cm-1 under a 1.5 kOe dc field, among the largest for polynuclear transition metal SMMs. In addition, DFT and ab initio calculations suggested that the presence of a strong Co(II)-radical magnetic interaction effectively quenches the QTM effect and enhances the barrier height for the magnetization reversal.

Abstract
A series of rare six-coordinated dinuclear Ln(III) complexes [Ln2(μ-Cl)2Cl4Li2(L)2(THF)6] were structurally characterized using a bulky amide ligand (L; Ln = Gd(1), Dy(2) and Y(3)). Detailed magnetic studies disclose that a weak antiferromagnetic coupling exists within 1 (-0.09 cm-1) and 2 (-0.07 cm-1; -2J Hamiltonian). Additionally, this study unveils the importance of the amide ligand at the coordination site of Dy(III), which manifests a slow relaxation of magnetization in the absence of an external magnetic field. This has been rationalized by detailed ab initio calculations as well as the electronic structure determination of 1 and 2.

Abstract
The reaction of fluoride anions with mononuclear lanthanide(III) and yttrium(III) hexaaza-macrocyclic complexes results in the formation of dinuclear fluoride-bridged complexes. As indicated by X-ray crystal structures, in these complexes two metal ions bound by the macrocycles are linked by two or three bridging fluoride anions, depending on the type of the macrocycle. In the case of the chiral hexaaza-macrocycle L1 derived from trans-1,2-diaminocyclohexane, the formation of these μ2-fluorido dinuclear complexes is accompanied by enantiomeric self-recognition of macrocyclic units. In contrast, this kind of recognition is not observed in the case of complexes of the chiral macrocycle L2 derived from 1,2-diphenylethylenediamine. The reaction of fluoride with a mixture of mononuclear complexes of L1 and L2, containing two different Ln(III) ions, results in narcissistic sorting of macrocyclic units. Conversely, a similar reaction involving mononuclear complexes of L1 and complexes of achiral macrocycle L3 based on ethylenediamine results in sociable sorting of macrocyclic units and preferable formation of heterodinuclear complexes. In addition, formation of these heterodinuclear complexes is accompanied by chirality transfer from the chiral macrocycle L1 to the achiral macrocycle L3 as indicated by CPL and CD spectra.

Abstract
Precise control of the crystal field and symmetry around the paramagnetic spin centre has recently facilitated the engineering of high-temperature single-ion magnets (SIMs), the smallest possible units for future spin-based devices. In the present work, we report a series of air-stable seven coordinate Dy(III) SIMs {[L2 Dy(H2 O)5 ][X]3 ⋅L2 ⋅n(H2 O), n = 0, X = Cl (1), n=1, X = Br (2), I (3)} possessing pseudo-D5h symmetry or pentagonal bipyramidal coordination geometry with high anisotropy energy barrier (Ueff ) and blocking temperature (TB ). While the strong axial coordination from the sterically encumbered phosphonamide, t BuPO(NHi Pr)2 (L), increases the overall anisotropy of the system, the presence of high symmetry significantly quenches quantum tunnelling of magnetization, which is the prominent deactivating factor encountered in SIMs. The energy barrier (Ueff ) and the blocking temperature (TB ) decrease in the order 3>2>1 with the change of anions from larger iodide to smaller strongly hydrogen-bonded chloride in the secondary coordination sphere, albeit the local coordination geometry and the symmetry around the Dy(III) display only slight deviations. Ab initio CASSCF/RASSI-SO/SINGLE_ANISO calculations provide deeper insights into the dynamics of magnetic relaxation in addition to the role of the secondary coordination sphere in modulating the anisotropy of the D5h systems, using diverse models. Thus, in addition to the importance of the crystal field and the symmetry to obtain high-temperature SIMs, this study also probes the significance of the secondary coordination sphere that can be tailored to accomplish novel SIMs.

Abstract
Two mononuclear Dy3+ compounds [Dy(bmbpen-F)X] (X = Cl, 1; Br, 2) with a pentagonal bipyramidal (PBP) geometry were obtained from N,N'-bis-(5-methyl-2-hydroxybenzyl)-N,N'-bis(5-fluoro-2-methylpyridyl)ethylenediamine (H2bmbpen-F) and dysprosium halides. The magnetic anisotropy and single-molecule magnet (SMM) behavior of these PBP compounds were regulated by introducing both electron-withdrawing F atoms into the equatorial pyridine rings and electron-donating -CH3 groups into the axial phenolic hydroxyl rings. The results of magnetic characterization show that 1 and 2 exhibit single molecule magnet behavior with magnetization reversal barriers of 990(13) and 1189(16) K under a zero dc external field and magnetic hysteresis loops up to 26 K and 36 K, respectively. The results of ab initio calculations are consistent with the experimental observations, confirming that the simultaneous introduction of electron-withdrawing groups into the equatorial positions and electron-donating groups into the axial positions can lead to PBP Dy-SMMs with improved properties.

Abstract
Lanthanide based single molecular magnets (SMMs), particularly dysprocenium based SIMs, are well known for their high energy barrier for spin reversal (U eff) and blocking temperatures (T B). Enhancing these two parameters and at the same time obtaining ambient stability is key to realising end-user applications such as compact storage or as qubits in quantum computing. In this work, by employing an array of theoretical tools (DFT, ab initio CASSCF and molecular dynamics), we have modelled six complexes [(η5-corannulene)Dy(Cp)] (1), [(η5-corannulene)Dy(C6H6)] (2), [(η6-corannulene)Dy(Cp)] (3), [(η6-corannulene)Dy(C6H6)] (4), [(exo-η5-corannulene)Dy(endo-η5-corannulene)] (5), and [(endo-η5-corannulene)Dy(endo-η5-corannulene)] (6) containing corannulene as a capping ligand to stabilise Dy(iii) half-sandwich complexes. Our calculations predict a strong axiality exerted by the Dy-C interactions in all complexes. Ab initio calculations predict a very large barrier height for all six molecules in the order 1 (919 cm-1) ≈ 3 (913 cm-1) > 2 (847 cm-1) > 4 (608 cm-1) ≈ 5 (603 cm-1) ≈ 6 (599 cm-1), suggesting larger barrier heights for Cp ring systems, followed by six-membered arene systems and then corannulene. DFT based molecular dynamics calculations were performed on complexes 3, 5 and 6. For complexes 3 and 5, the geometries that are dynamically accessible are far fewer. The range of U eff computed for molecular dynamics snapshots is high, indicating a possibility of translating the large U eff obtained into attractive blocking temperatures in these complexes, but the converse is found for 6. Furthermore, an in-depth C-H bond vibrational analysis performed on complex 3 suggests that the vibration responsible for reducing the blocking temperature in dysprocenium SIMs is absent here as the C-H bonds are stronger and corannulene steric strain prevents the C(Cp)-Dy-C(Cor) bending. As [(η6-corannulene)TM(X)]+ (TM = Ru, Zr, Os, Rh, Ir and X = C5Me5, C6Me6) are known, the predictions made here have a higher prospect of yielding stability under ambient conditions, a very large U eff value and a high blocking temperature - a life-giving combination to new generation SMMs.

Abstract
A family of four mononuclear DyIII complexes of the guanidine-based ligand L [L = tris(2-hydroxybenzylidene)triaminoguanidine] with formulas [DyLCl2(DMF)2]·DMF·CH3OH (1), [DyL2(CH3OH)2]Br·H2O·3CH3OH (2), [DyL2(H2O)2]SCN·3H2O·CH3OH (3) and [DyL2(CH3OH)2]SCN·CH3CN·CH3OH (4) were successfully prepared by varying reaction conditions. Complex 1 is seven-coordinate, with three N2O from ligand L along with two equatorially trapped DMF molecules and two axial Cl- anions, adopting pentagonal bipyramidal D5h symmetry. Complexes 2-4 have somewhat similar structures with six donor N4O2 sites from two ligands and two O from corresponding solvent molecules, featuring a N4O4 octa-coordinate environment with triangular dodecahedron D2d symmetry. Magnetic investigations indicated that complex 1 did not demonstrate single-molecule magnetic behavior, while complexes 2-4 were single-ion magnets (SIMs) under zero applied DC field with the effective energy barriers (Ueff) of 207.3 (2), 222.5 (3) and 311.7 K (4), respectively. The different types of coordinated solvent molecules and counter anions caused changes in intermolecular interactions and coordination geometries that severely affected their magnetic dynamics. The magnetic behaviors of these complexes were investigated through complete-active space self-consistent field (CASSCF) calculations with the inclusion of spin-orbit effects. Calculations revealed that the measured differences in magnetic behaviors originated mainly from intermolecular and crystal-packing effects as isolated complexes 1-4 have almost identical electronic and magnetic properties.

Abstract
The importance of equatorial crystal fields on magnetic anisotropy of ytterbium single molecule magnets (SMMs) is observed for the first time. Herein, we report three similar dinuclear ytterbium complexes with the formula [Yb2 (3-OMe-L)2 (DMF)2 (NO3 )2 ]⋅DMF (1), [Yb2 (3-H-L)2 (DMF)2 (NO3 )2 ]⋅DMF⋅H2 O (2), and [Yb2 (3-NO3 -L)2 (DMF)2 (NO3 )2 ] (3), [where 3-X-H2 L=N'-(2-hydroxy-3-X-benzylidene)picolinohydrazide, X=OMe (1), H (2) NO2 (3)]. Detailed magnetic measurements reveal the presence of weak antiferromagnetic interactions between the Yb centers and a field-induced slow relaxation of magnetization in all complexes. A higher energy barrier for spin reversal was observed for complex 1 (Ueff =50 K) and it decreases in the order of 2 (47 K) to 3 (40 K). Notably, complex 1 shows a remarkable energy barrier within the frequency range of 1-850 Hz reported for Yb-based SMMs. Further, ab initio calculations show a higher axial anisotropy and lower quantum tunneling of magnetization (QTM) in the ground state for 1 compared to 2 and 3. It was also observed that the presence of a strong crystal field in the equatorial plane (when the ∡ O1-Yb-O3 bond angle is close to 90°) enhances the axial anisotropy and improves the SMM behavior in the studied complexes. Both the experimental and theoretical analysis of relaxation dynamics discloses that Raman and QTM play major role on slow relaxation process for all complexes. To provide more insight into the exchange interactions, broken-symmetry DFT calculations were performed.

Abstract
Artificial smart materials with switchable multifunctionality are of immense interest owing to their wide application in sensors, displays and memory devices. Lanthanide complexes are promising multifunctional materials integrating optical and magnetic characteristics. However, synergistic manipulation of different physical properties in lanthanide systems is still challenging. Herein we designed and synthesized a mononuclear complex [DyIII(SCN)3(depma)2(4-hpy)2] (1), which incorporates 9-diethylphosphonomethylanthracene (depma) as a photo-active component and 4-hydroxypyridine (4-hpy) as a polar component. This compound shows several unusual features: (a) reversible thermo-responsive phase transition associated with the order-disorder transition of 4-hpy and SCN-, which leads to thermochromic behavior and dielectric anomaly; (b) reversible photo-induced dimerization of anthracene groups, which leads to synergistic switching of luminescence, magnetic and dielectric properties. To our knowledge, compound 1 is the first example of lanthanide complexes that show stimuli-triggered synergistic and reversible switching of luminescence, magnetic and dielectric properties.

Abstract
The reactions of LnIII ions with a versatile pyridyl-decorated dicarboxylic acid ligand lead to the formation of a series of novel three-dimensional (3D) Ln-MOFs, [Ln3(pta)4(Hpta)(H2O)]·xH2O (Ln = Dy (1), Eu (2), Gd (3), Tb (4), H2pta = 2-(4-pyridyl)-terephthalic acid, x = 6 for 1, 2.5 for 2, 1.5 for 3 and 2 for 4). The Ln3+ ions act as nine-coordinated muffin spheres, linking to each other to generate trinuclear {Ln3(OOC)6N2} SBUs, which are further extended to be interesting 3D topological architectures. To the best of our knowledge, the Dy-MOF exhibits zero-field single-molecule magnet (SMM) behaviour with the largest effective energy barrier among the previously reported 3D MOF-based Dy-SMMs. The combined analyses of a diluted sample (1@Y) and ab initio calculations demonstrate that the thermally assisted slow relaxation is mainly attributed to the single-ion magnetism. Furthermore, fluorescence measurements reveal that H2pta can sensitize EuIII and TbIII characteristic luminescence.

Abstract
A family of four Ln(III) complexes has been synthesized with the general formula [Ln2(NO3)4(L)2(S)] (Ln = Gd, Tb, Er, and S = H2O; 1, 2 and 4, respectively/Ln = Dy, S = MeOH, complex 3), where HL is the flexible ditopic ligand N’-(1-(pyridin-2-yl)ethylidene)pyridine-2-carbohydrazide. The structures of isostructural MeOH/H2O solvates of these complexes were determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The two LnIII ions are doubly bridged by the deprotonated oxygen atoms of two “head-to-head” 2.21011 (Harris notation) L¯ ligands, forming a central, nearly rhombic {LnIII2(μ-OR)2}4+ core. Two bidentate chelating nitrato groups complete a sphenocoronal 10-coordination at one metal ion, while two bidentate chelating nitrato groups and one solvent molecule (H2O or MeOH) complete a spherical capped square antiprismatic 9-coordination at the other. The structures are critically compared with those of other, previously reported metal complexes of HL or L¯. The IR spectra of 1–4 are discussed in terms of the coordination modes of the organic and inorganic ligands involved. The f-f transitions in the solid-state (diffuse reflectance) spectra of the Tb(III), Dy(III), and Er(III) complexes have been fully assigned in the UV/Vis and near-IR regions. Magnetic susceptibility studies in the 1.85–300 K range reveal the presence of weak, intramolecular GdIII∙∙∙GdIII antiferromagnetic exchange interactions in 1 [J/kB = −0.020(6) K based on the spin Hamiltonian Ĥ = −2J(ŜGd1∙ ŜGd2)] and probably weak antiferromagnetic LnIII∙∙∙LnIII exchange interactions in 2–4. Ac susceptibility measurements in zero dc field do not show frequency dependent out-of-phase signals, and this experimental fact is discussed for 3 in terms of the magnetic anisotropy axis for each DyIII center and the oblate electron density of this metal ion. Complexes 3 and 4 are Single-Molecule Magnets (SMMs) and this behavior is optimally observed under external dc fields of 600 and 1000 Oe, respectively. The magnetization relaxation pathways are discussed and a satisfactory fit of the temperature and field dependencies of the relaxation time τ was achieved considering a model that employs Raman, direct, and Orbach relaxation mechanisms.

Abstract
An air-stable dysprosium(iii) complex, [C(NH2)3]4[DyF(piv)4](piv)2 (piv = pivalate), with a terminal fluoride ligand protected by forming extensive hydrogen bonds with peripheral guanidiniums has been isolated. Though the magnetic data failed to determine the energy barrier for the magnetic reversal (Ueff) accurately, the fine emission spectrum of the 4F9/2→6H15/2 transition at 4.2 K and ab initio calculations reveal that the Ueff is about 376(20) K, which is among the highest for high-coordinate (coordination numbers ≥ 9) lanthanide mononuclear magnets.

Abstract
A one-dimensional coordination solid 1c is synthesized by reaction of a bispyridyl dithienylethene (DTE) photochromic unit with the highly anisotropic dysprosium-based single-molecule magnet [Dy(Tppy)F(pyridine)2]PF6. Slow magnetic relaxation characteristics are retained in the chain compound 1c, and photoisomerization of the bridging DTE ligand induces a single-crystal-to-single-crystal transformation that can be monitored using photocrystallography. Notably, the resulting chain compound 1o exhibits faster low-temperature relaxation than that of 1c, which is apparent in magnetic hysteresis data collected for both compounds as high as 4 K. Ab initio calculations suggest that this photomodulation of the magnetic relaxation behavior is due to crystal packing changes rather than changes to the crystal field splitting upon ligand isomerization.

Abstract
Following a novel synthetic strategy where the strong uniaxial ligand field generated by the Ph3 SiO- (Ph3 SiO- =anion of triphenylsilanol) and the 2,4-di-t Bu-PhO- (2,4-di-t Bu-PhO- =anion of 2,4-di-tertbutylphenol) ligands combined with the weak equatorial field of the ligand LN6 , leads to [DyIII (LN6 )(2,4-di-t Bu-PhO)2 ](PF6 ) (1), [DyIII (LN6 )(Ph3 SiO)2 ](PF6 ) (2) and [DyIII (LN6 )(Ph3 SiO)2 ](BPh4 ) (3) hexagonal bipyramidal dysprosium(III) single-molecule magnets (SMMs) with high anisotropy barriers of Ueff =973 K for 1, Ueff =1080 K for 2 and Ueff =1124 K for 3 under zero applied dc field. Ab initio calculations predict that the dominant magnetization reversal barrier of these complexes expands up to the 3rd Kramers doublet, thus revealing for the first time the exceptional uniaxial magnetic anisotropy that even the six equatorial donor atoms fail to negate, opening up the possibility to other higher-order symmetry SMMs.
