1H-Detected quadrupolar spin-lattice relaxation measurements under magic-angle spinning solid-state NMR

Distance measurements to quadrupolar nuclei: Evolution of the rotational echo double resonance technique

Molecular structure determination is the basis for understanding chemical processes and the property of materials. The direct dependence of the magnetic dipolar interaction on the distance makes solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) an excellent tool to study molecular structure when X-ray crystallography fails to provide atomic-resolution data. Although techniques to measure distances between pairs of isolated nuclear spin-1/2 pairs are routine and easy to implement using the rotational echo double resonance (REDOR) experiment (Gullion & Schaefer, 1989), the existence of a nucleus with a spin > 1/2, appearing in approximately 75% of the elements in the periodic table, poses a challenge due to difficulties stemming from the large nuclear quadrupolar coupling constant (QCC). This mini-review presents the existing solid-state magic-angle spinning NMR techniques aimed toward the efficient and accurate determination of internuclear distances between a spin-1/2 and a "quadrupolar" nucleus having a spin larger than one half. Analytical expressions are provided for the various recoupling curves stemming from different techniques, and a coherent nomenclature for these various techniques is suggested. Treatment of some special cases such as multiple spin effects and spins with close Larmor frequencies is also discussed. The most advanced methods can recouple spins with quadrupolar frequencies up to tens of megahertz and beyond, expanding the distance measurement capabilities of solid-state NMR to an increasingly growing number of applications and nuclear spin systems.

Broadband adiabatic inversion experiments for the measurement of longitudinal relaxation time constants

Accurate measurements of longitudinal relaxation time constants (T₁) in solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (SSNMR) experiments are important for the study of molecular-level structure and dynamics. Such measurements are often made under magic-angle spinning conditions; however, there are numerous instances where they must be made on stationary samples, which often give rise to broad powder patterns arising from large anisotropic NMR interactions. In this work, we explore the use of wideband uniform-rate smooth-truncation pulses for the measurement of T₁ constants. Two experiments are introduced: (i) BRAIN-CPT1, a modification of the BRAIN-CP (BRoadband Adiabatic-INversion-Cross Polarization) sequence, for broadband CP-based T₁ measurements and (ii) WCPMG-IR, a modification of the WURST-CPMG sequence, for direct-excitation (DE) inversion-recovery experiments. A series of T₁ constants are measured for spin-1/2 and quadrupolar nuclei with broad powder patterns, such as ¹¹⁹Sn (I = 1/2), ³⁵Cl (I = 3/2), ²H (I = 1), and ¹⁹⁵Pt (I = 1/2). High signal-to-noise spectra with uniform patterns can be obtained due to signal enhancements from T₂ ^eff-weighted echo trains, and in favorable cases, BRAIN-CPT1 allows for the rapid measurement of T₁ in comparison to DE experiments. Protocols for spectral acquisition, processing, and analysis of relaxation data are discussed. In most cases, relaxation behavior can be modeled with either monoexponential or biexponential functions based upon measurements of integrated powder pattern intensity; however, it is also demonstrated that one must interpret such T₁ values with caution, as demonstrated by measurements of T₁ anisotropy in ¹¹⁹Sn, ²H, and ¹⁹⁵Pt NMR spectra.

Resolution enhancement and proton proximity probed by 3D TQ/DQ/SQ proton NMR spectroscopy under ultrafast magic-angle-spinning beyond 70 kHz

Proton nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) in solid state has gained significant attention in recent years due to the remarkable resolution and sensitivity enhancement afforded by ultrafast magic-angle-spinning (MAS). In spite of the substantial suppression of ¹H-¹H dipolar couplings, the proton spectral resolution is still poor compared to that of ¹³C or ¹⁵N NMR, rendering it challenging for the structural and conformational analysis of complex chemicals or biological solids. Herein, by utilizing the benefits of double-quantum (DQ) and triple-quantum (TQ) coherences, we propose a 3D single-channel pulse sequence that correlates proton triple-quantum/double-quantum/single-quantum (TQ/DQ/SQ) chemical shifts. In addition to the two-spin proximity information, this 3D TQ/DQ/SQ pulse sequence enables more reliable extraction of three-spin proximity information compared to the regular 2D TQ/SQ correlation experiment, which could aid in revealing the proton network in solids. Furthermore, the TQ/DQ slice taken at a specific SQ chemical shift only reveals the local correlations to the corresponding SQ chemical shift, and thus it enables accurate assignments of the proton peaks along the TQ and DQ dimensions and simplifies the interpretation of proton spectra especially for dense proton networks. The high performance of this 3D pulse sequence is well demonstrated on small compounds, L-alanine and a tripeptide, N-formyl-L-methionyl-L-leucyl-L-phenylalanine (MLF). We expect that this new methodology can inspire the development of multidimensional solid-state NMR pulse sequences using the merits of TQ and DQ coherences and enable high-throughput investigations of complex solids using abundant protons.
