A chelated borinium cation

Two coordinate boron cations are rare. Herein we report the synthesis of [RNSiMe2CH2]2BF (R = Dipp 3, 1-Ad 5) (Dipp = C6H3(iPr)2, Ad = C10H15) via the reaction of BF3 with the corresponding dilithiated diamides. Subsequent abstraction of fluoride provided the corresponding borinium salts, [(RNSiMe2CH2)2B][B(C6F5)4] (R = Dipp 6, 1-Ad 8). While the former was generated, the latter proved isolable and was crystallographically characterized.

Boron diamide derivatives containing N-N and N-P molecular fragments

The cationic and neutral boron-diamide precursors are employed to target the inclusion of N2 and N-P molecular fragments. The species (HCN(Dipp))2BNH25, and (H2CN(Dipp))2BNH26 were prepared. While efforts to oxidize with [NO]+ gave mixtures of products, reactions with N2H4 gave the salts [(HCN(Dipp))2B(NHNH3)][O3SCF3] 7 [(H2CN(Dipp))2B(NHNH3)][O3SCF3] 8. Excess N2H4 gave the neutral species (HCN(Dipp))2B(NHNH2) 9 and (H2CN(Dipp))2B(NHNH2) 10, respectively. The species (H2CN(Dipp))2B(N3) 11 was prepared for comparative purposes. Turning to related NP species, compound 6 was converted to (HCN(Dipp))2B(NHPCl2) 12, while (HCN(Dipp))2BNK(SiMe3) 14 was used to give (HCN(Dipp))2BN(SiMe3)PCl215. Replacement of one of the chlorides gave (HCN(Dipp))2BN(SiMe3)PCl(OSO2CF3) 16 which converts to [(HCN(Dipp))2BNPCl]217. Similarly heating 15 afforded 17. The insights for the synthesis of further boron-N2 and boron-NP derivatives are discussed.

Phosphinoborinium cation: a synthon for cationic B-P bond systems

Herein, we report access to phosphinoborinium cations via heterolytic cleavage of the boron-bromide bond in bromophosphinoborane. The product of the reaction was isolated as a dimeric dication possessing a planar B₂P₂ core. Activation of the C-H and C-P bonds in the dication led to the formation of the borinium-phosphaborene adduct. Reactivity studies revealed that the title cation exhibits ambiphilic properties and intramolecular frustrated Lewis pair features.

The Non-Ancillary Nature of Trimethylsilylamide Substituents in Boranes and Borinium Cations

The known boranes (R(Me₃Si)N)₂BF (R=Me₃Si 1, tBu 2, C₆F₅3, o‐tol 4, Mes 5, Dipp 6) and borinium salts (R(Me₃Si)N)₂B][B(C₆F₅)₄] (R=Me₃Si 7, tBu 8) are prepared and fully characterized. Compound 7 is shown to react with phosphines to generate [R₃PSiMe₃]⁺ and [R₃PH]⁺ (R=Me, tBu). Efforts to generate related borinium cations via fluoride abstraction from (R(Me₃Si)N)₂BF (R=C₆F₅3, o‐tol 4, Mes 5) gave complex mixtures suggesting multiple reaction pathways. However for R=Dipp 6, the species [(μ‐F)(SiMe₂N(Dipp))₂BMe][B(C₆F₅)₄] was isolated as the major product, indicating methyl abstraction from silicon and F/Me exchange on boron. These observations together with state‐of‐the‐art DFT mechanistic studies reveal that the trimethylsilyl‐substituents do not behave as ancillary subsitutents but rather act as sources of proton, SiMe₃ and methyl groups.

Unraveling the reactivity of a cationic iminoborane: avenues to unusual boron cations

A cationic terminal iminoborane [Mes*N Created by potrace 1.16, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2019 ]]> B ← IPr₂Me₂][AlBr₄] (3⁺[AlBr₄]⁻) (Mes* = 2,4,6-tri-tert-butylphenyl and IPr₂Me₂ = 1,3-diisopropyl-4,5-dimethylimidazol-2-ylidene) has been synthesized and characterized. The employment of an aryl group and N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) ligand enables 3⁺[AlBr₄]⁻ to exhibit both B-centered Lewis acidity and BN multiple bond reactivities, thus allowing for the construction of tri-coordinate boron cations 5⁺–12⁺. More importantly, initial reactions involving coordination, addition, and [2 + 3] cycloadditions have been observed for the cationic iminoborane, demonstrating the potential to build numerous organoboron species via several synthetic routes.

An NHC-stabilized aryliminoboryl cation exhibits both boron-centered Lewis acidity and multiple bond reactivity and could be utilized as an effective synthon for unusual cationic boron species.

[Mes-B-TMP]+ borinium cation initiated cyanosilylation and catalysed hydrosilylation of ketones and aldehydes

Two aryl amino borinium cations derived from Cl(Mes)B-NR₂ (NR₂ = TMP, HMDS) faced divergent outcomes. As the HMDS-substituted one underwent methyl migration from silicon to boron transforming the putative borinium ion to a silylium ion, [Mes-B-TMP]⁺ can initiate cyanosilylation and catalyse hydrosilylation of ketones and aldehydes.

Site-Fixed Hydroboration of Terminal and Internal Alkenes using BX3 /i Pr2 NEt*

An unprecedented and general hydroboration of alkenes with BX₃ (X=Br, Cl) as the boration reagent in the presence of ⁱ Pr₂ NEt is reported. The addition of ⁱ Pr₂ NEt not only suppresses alkene polymerization and haloboration side reactions but also provides an "H" source for hydroboration. More importantly, the site-fixed installation of a boryl group at the original position of the internal double bond is readily achieved in contrast to conventional transition-metal-catalyzed hydroboration processes. Further application to the synthesis of 1,n-diborylalkanes (n=3-10) is also demonstrated. Preliminary mechanistic studies reveal a major reaction pathway that involves radical species and operates through a frustrated Lewis pair type single-electron-transfer mechanism.

The synthesis and isolation of the first stable C-B-N-substituted borinium [MesBNiPr2][B(C6F5)4] (2) is described. Compound 2 was shown to react with isothiocyanate and carbodiimides, effecting B-C insertion to afford nitrilium (4) and borenium amidinate salts, respectively. The borinium cation [MesBNiPr2]+ (2+) was also generated from reactions of MesB(Cl)NiPr2 (1) and GaCl3, and used to prepare stable borenium amidinate salts (5-6), while the triflate borane MesB(OTf)NiPr2 (7) reacts with carbodiimide to give the bis(amidinate) boronium salt [MesC(NiPr)2B((NiPr)2C)NiPr2][OTf] (8).

Desymmetrization of Dicationic Diboranes by Isomerization Catalyzed by a Nucleophile

Cationic monoboranes exhibit a rich chemistry. By constrast, only a few cationic diboranes are known, that all are symmetrically substituted. In this work, the first unsymmetrically substituted dicationic diboranes, featuring sp2 -sp2 -hybridized boron atoms, are reported. The compounds are formed by intramolecular rearrangement from preceding isomeric symmetrically substituted dicationic diboranes, a process that is catalyzed by nucleophiles. From the temperature-dependence of the isomerization rate, activation parameters for this unprecedented rearrangement are derived. The difference in fluoride ion affinity between the two boron atoms and the bonding situation in these unique unsymmetrical dicationic diboranes are evaluated.
