Abstract
Water, although an important part of everyday life, is acts as one of the most significant contaminants in various applications such as biomedical monitoring, chemical production, petroleum-based fuel and food processing. In fact, the presence of water in other solvents is a huge concern. For the quantification of trace water content, different methods such as Karl-Fischer, electrochemical, nuclear magnetic resonance, chromatography, and thermogravimetric analysis have been used. Although every technique has its own benefit, each one suffers from several drawbacks that include high detection costs, lengthy procedures and specialized operations. Nowadays, the development of fluorescence-based chemical probes has become an exciting area of research for the quick and accurate estimation of water content in organic solvents. A variety of chemical processes such as hydrolysis reaction, metal ions promoted oxidation reaction, suppression of the -C═N isomerization, protonation and deprotonation reactions, and molecular aggregation have been well researched in the last few years for the fluorescent detection of trace water. These chemical processes eventually lead to different photophysical events such as aggregation-induced emission (AIE), aggregation-induced emission enhancement (AIEE), aggregation-caused quenching (ACQ), fluorescent resonance energy transfer (FRET), charge transfer, photo-induced electron transfer (PET), excited state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) that are responsible for the detection. This review presents a summary of the fluorescence-based chemosensors reported in recent years. The design of water sensors, sensing mechanisms and their potential applications are reviewed and discussed.

Abstract
Water in organic solvents is a prevalent impurity that significantly influences chemical reactions and industrial processes. Carbon dots (CDs) gained attention as promising tools for chemosensing due to their advantageous characteristics, including easy synthesis, cost-effectiveness, and excellent adjustability and stability. However, limited solubility in water and turn off fluorescence response mode hinder the practical utilization of CDs for water sensing. To tackle such dilemma, a highly water-soluble CDs with distinctive hydrogen-bond-induced emission (HBIE) was rationally designed through introducing sulfone group into the widely employed p-phenylenediamine precursor. The inclusion of sulfone group imparts the CDs with notable water solubility, as well as distinctive ratiometric fluorescent response towards water content, exhibiting high sensitivity and selectivity. Upon exposure to water, the emission color of CDs undergoes a real-time transition from blue to yellow-green, which can be readily discerned by naked eyes. The CDs have been successfully applied in detecting water in commercially available alcohol. This study presents a straightforward yet efficacious approach for rationally design of CDs with unique HBIE characteristics and ratiometric fluorescent response, offering great potential for practical chemosensing applications.

Abstract
With the rapid development of fluorescent nanoparticles (FNPs), such as CDs, QDs, and MOFs, the construction of FNP-based probes has played a key role in improving chemical sensors. Ratiometric fluorescent probes exhibit distinct advantages, such as resistance to environmental interference and achieving visualization. Thus, FNP-based dual-emission ratiometric fluorescent probes (DRFPs) have rapidly developed in the field of metal ion and small molecule detection in the past few years. In this review, firstly we introduce the fluorescence sensing mechanisms; then, we focus on the strategies for the fabrication of DRFPs, including hybrid FNPs, single FNPs with intrinsic dual emission and target-induced new emission, and DRFPs based on auxiliary nanoparticles. In the section on hybrid FNPs, methods to assemble two types of FNPs, such as chemical bonding, electrostatic interaction, core satellite or core-shell structures, coordination, and encapsulation, are introduced. In the section on single FNPs with intrinsic dual emission, methods for the design of dual-emission CDs, QDs, and MOFs are discussed. Regarding target-induced new emission, sensitization, coordination, hydrogen bonding, and chemical reaction induced new emissions are discussed. Furthermore, in the section on DRFPs based on auxiliary nanoparticles, auxiliary nanomaterials with the inner filter effect and enzyme mimicking activity are discussed. Finally, the existing challenges and an outlook on the future of DRFP are presented. We sincerely hope that this review will contribute to the quick understanding and exploration of DRFPs by researchers.

Abstract
Most fluorescent probes based on carbon dots (CDs) fluorescence color or intensity change are still used for detection in solution, but in practical fluorescence detection applications, detection in the solid state is necessary. Therefore, a CDs-based fluorescence sensing device is designed in this paper, which can be used for water detection in liquid and solid states. Using oPD as a single precursor, yellow fluorescent CDs (y-CDs) were prepared by hydrothermal method, which can be used in the field of water detection and anti-counterfeiting by using its solvent-sensitive properties. First, y-CDs can be used to visually and intelligently detect the water content in ethanol. Secondly, it can be used to detect the Relative Humidity (RH) of the environment by combining it with cellulose to form a fluorescent film. Finally, y-CDs can also be used as a fluorescent material for fluorescence anti-counterfeiting.

Abstract
Fast and selective detection of contaminants plays a key role in meeting human health and environmental concerns. Herein, two groups of isostructural lanthanide MOFs, [Ln(Hpta)(oxalic acid)]·H2O (1-Eu, 2-Gd) and [Ln(pta)(oxalic acid)0.5(H2O)2]·2H2O (3-Eu, 4-Gd) (H2pta = 2-(4-pyridyl)-terephthalic acid, C2O4- = oxalic acid), were synthesized by solvothermal method. Single crystal X-ray diffraction reveals that 1 and 2 are 3D neutral frameworks, while 3 and 4 consist of 2D layers with parallelogram holes and stack into 3D networks through O-H⋯N and O-H⋯O hydrogen bonding interactions. All complexes remain crystalline and stable below 400 °C, suggesting preeminent thermostability. Noteworthily, only 3 shows excellent chemical stability in water and organic solvent. Therefore, the solid-state fluorescence spectrum was used to characterize 3 which exhibited intense red luminescence. The N active sites in the pore channels of 3 are conducive to displaying a distinct quenching effect for Fe3+ cations in aqueous solutions, Cr2O72- anions in DMF and DMA solutions, and nitrofuran antibiotics in the DMF solvent. Overall, 3 is a prospective luminescent sensor for detecting Fe3+, Cr2O72- and nitrofuran antibiotics.

Abstract
An easy-to-use, highly selective, and real-time organic solvent quality assessment is desirable to detect water contamination in organic solvents. Herein, a one-step procedure using ultrasound irradiation was used for encapsulating nanoscale carbon dots (CDs) into metal-organic framework-199 (HKUST-1) to form CDs@HKUST-1 composite. The CDs@HKUST-1 exhibited very weak fluorescence due to photo-induced electron transfer (PET) from the CDs to the Cu2+ centers, acting as a fluorescent sensor in its off-state. The designed material can detect and discriminate water from other organic solvents, driven by turn-on fluorescence. This highly sensitive sensing platform could be applied for the detection of water in ethanol, acetonitrile, and acetone with wide linear detection ranges of 0-70% v/v, 2-12% v/v, and 10-50% v/v and limits of detection of 0.70% v/v, 0.59% v/v, and 1.08% v/v, respectively. The detection mechanism is attributed to the interruption of the PET process due to the release of fluorescent CDs after treatment with water. A smartphone-based quantitative test was successfully developed to monitor the water content in organic solvents utilizing CDs@HKUST-1 and a phone color processing application, thus making it possible to develop an on-site, real time and easy-to-use sensor for water detection.

Abstract
Bimetallic metal organic frameworks (BMOFs) are a class of crystalline solids and their structure comprises two metal ions in the lattice. BMOFs show a synergistic effect of two metal centres and enhanced properties compared to MOFs. By controlling the composition and relative distribution of two metal ions in the lattice the structure, morphology, and topology of BMOFs could be regulated resulting in an improvement in the tunability of pore structure, activity, and selectivity. Thus, developing BMOFs and BMOF incorporated membranes for applications such as adsorption, separation, catalysis, and sensing is a promising strategy to mitigate environmental pollution and address the looming energy crisis. Herein we present an overview of recent advancements in the area of BMOFs and a comprehensive review of BMOF incorporated membranes reported to date. The scope, challenges as well as future perspectives for BMOFs and BMOF incorporated membranes are presented.

Abstract
Hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (HOFs) have shown great potential in separation, sensing and host-guest chemistry, however, the pre-design of HOFs remains challenging due to the uncertainty of solvents' participation in framework formation. Herein, the polarity-evolution-controlled framework/luminescence regulation is demonstrated based on multiple-site hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks. Several distinct HOFs were prepared by changing bonding modes of building units via the evolution of electrostatic forces induced by various solvent polarities. High-polar solvents with strong electrostatic attraction to surrounding units showed the tendency to form cage structures, while low-polar solvents with weak electrostatic attraction only occupy hydrogen-bond sites, conducive to the channel formation. Furthermore, the conformation of optical building unit can be adjusted by affecting the solvent polarity, generating different luminescence outputs. These results pave the way for the rational design of ideal HOFs with on-demand framework regulation and luminescence properties.

Abstract
Simple, fast, and sensitive detection of trace water in organic solvents is an urgent requirement for chemical industries. Herein, combining the unusual excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) mechanism with the effective strategy of pore space partition, for the first time, we construct a powerful fluorescent metal-organic framework (SNNU-301) probe with excellent water stability. The SNNU-301 probe shows a remarkable performance for turn-on ESIPT-based fluorescence response to water in nine common organic solvents, exhibiting wide linear ranges, low limit of detection values, and ultrafast response, especially in dimethyl sulfoxide (0-5.2%; 0.011%, v/v; 110 s). The typical ESIPT-sensitive linker 2,5-dihydroxyterephthalate (DHBDC) imparts it with discriminative detection properties via enol-keto tautomerism, and light-responsive triangular tri(pyridin-4-yl)-amine (TPA) realizes pore space partition. The theoretical calculation gives an in-depth explanation about the proton transfer mechanism. Comparative experiments and GCMC simulation provide evidence that the synergy of the ESIPT process and TPA of the framework further boosts its performance effectively. Definitely, this work not only offers a promising candidate with fast detection speed, high sensitivity, excellent universality, and visual observation for the determination of water in organic solvents but also provides valuable guidance for the design of high-performance fluorescent probes.

Abstract
Trivalent metal ions (Cr3+, Al3+, and Fe3+) constitute a major section of the environmental pollutants, and their excess accumulation has a detrimental effect on health, so their detection in trace quantity has been a hot topic of research. A highly scalable 3D porous Zn-based luminescent metal-organic framework (MOF) has been synthesized by exploiting the mixed ligand synthesis concept. The strategic selection of an aromatic π-conjugated organic linker and N-rich spacer containing the azine functionality as metal ion binding sites immobilized across the pore spaces, have made this MOF an ideal turn-on sensor for Al3+, Cr3+, and Fe3+ ions with very high sensitivity, selectivity, and recyclability. An in-depth study revealed absorbance caused enhancement mechanism (ACE) responsible for such turn-on phenomena. In order to make the detection process straightforward, convenient, portable, and economically viable, we have fabricated MOF test paper strips (the MOF could be simply immobilized onto the paper strips) for naked eye visual detection under UV light, which, thus, manifests its potential as a real-time smart sensor for these trivalent ions.

Abstract
An effective strategy was developed to fabricate novel lanthanide ions–pyromellitic acid–methoxy poly(ethylene glycol) (Ln-PMA-MPEG) nano-assemblies. The amphiphilic partially esterified derivative (PMA-MPEG) of pyromellitic acid with methoxy poly(ethylene glycol) was designed and synthesized via the coupling reaction. Ln-PMA-MPEG nano-assemblies were rapidly fabricated using PMA-MPEG as a polymer ligand with Eu3+ ions or mixed Eu3+/Tb3+ ions through biomimetic mineralization in neutral aqueous systems. The size of the as-prepared materials could be designed in the range 80–200 nm with a uniform distribution. The materials were readily dispersed in various solvents and displayed visible color variations and different photoluminescent properties for solvent recognition. The mixed Eu/Tb-PMA-MPEG nanomaterials were investigated as ratiometric sensors for the detection of trace water in DMF and Fe3+ ions in aqueous solutions. The sensor materials can quantitatively detect trace water in DMF from 0% to 10% (v/v). The resultant materials also display a strong correlation between the double luminescence intensity ratios (ITb/IEu) and Fe3+ concentration, with a good linear detection concentration in the range of 0–0.24 mM and a limit of detection of 0.46 μM, and other metal ions did not interfere with the sensing mechanism for Fe3+ ions. The novel nano-assemblies have potential applications as ratiometric fluorescent nanosensors in the chemical industry as well as in biomedical fields.

Abstract
Metal-organic framework (MOF)-based sensors for the detection of various analyte molecules has been a subject of absolute importance. However, most of these sensors rely on the turn-off (quenching) transduction response, while those reporting turn-on response are very rare. In this article, we have synthesized two new MOF-based sensors, {[Zn2(oxdz)2(tpbn)]·14H2O}n (1) and {[Zn2(oxdz)2(tpxn)]·10H2O·2C2H5OH}n (2), via the self-assembly of Zn(II) metal ions, a fluorogenic oxdz2- linker, and bis(tridentate) ligands (tpbn and tpxn) under ambient conditions. Their formation from such a self-assembly process has been evaluated on the basis of the geometry around the five-coordinated Zn(II), preferential meridional binding of the bis(tridentate) ligands, and diverse binding of the carboxylate groups in oxdz2-. Although 1 and 2 are isostructural, a difference in the transduction mechanism for the sensing of acetylacetone in organic solvents (turn-on for 1 and turn-off for 2) is observed and can be attributed to the spacer in the bis(tridentate) ligands. We have demonstrated the competing effect of the nonradiative interactions and photoinduced electron transfer toward the sensing mechanism. The results are well-supported by the Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy study, intensity versus concentration plots, spectral overlap measurements, time-resolved fluorescence studies, and MM2 and density functional theory calculations. Furthermore, we have showcased the utilization of 1 for the sensing of trace amounts of water in organic solvents.

Abstract
Multi-emission materials have come to prominent attention ascribed to their extended applications other than single-emission ones. General and robust design strategies of a single matrix with multi-emission under single excitation are urgently required. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are porous materials prepared with organic ligands and metal nodes. The variety of metal nodes and ligands makes MOFs with great superiority as multi-emission matrices. Guest species encapsulated into the channels or pores of MOFs are the additional emission sites for multi-emission. In this review, multi-emission MOFs according to the different excitation sites are summarized and classified. The emission mechanisms are discussed, such as antenna effect, excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) and tautomerism for dual-emission. The factors that affect the emissions are revealed, including ligand-metal energy transfer and host-guest interaction, etc. Multi-emission MOFs could be predictably designed and prepared, once the emissive factors are controlled rationally in combination with the different multi-emission mechanisms. Correspondingly, new and practical applications are realized, including but not limited to ratiometric/multi-target sensing and bioimaging, white light-emitting diodes, and anti-counterfeiting. The design strategies of multi-emission MOFs and their extensive applications are reviewed. The results will shed light on other multi-emission systems to develop the structure-derived functionality and applications.

Abstract
Antibiotic residues in aquatic environments have attracted wide attention. Considering the impacts on the ecosystem and human health, it is urgent to develop a rapid method for detecting antibiotic residues in the environment. In this work, a nanoscale lanthanide metal-organic framework Eu(TATB) with a stable red luminescence in aqueous solution is synthesized by the microemulsion method. Sulfamethazine (SMZ) is frequently most used in veterinary medicine as one of sulfonamides. Eu(TATB) can be used for sensitively and rapidly specific recognition of SMZ with low detection limit (0.67 μM) and eminent recyclability. In addition, a paper-based visual system for point-of-care (POC) monitoring SMZ is devised by both using filter paper embedded with Eu(TATB) and our developed portable smartphone-involved imaging cassette. The naked eyes can observe that the red luminescence of the paper sensor gradually fades away at the presence of SMZ. This provides a reliable and effective method for on-site detection of sulfonamide antibiotics in the field of environmental monitoring.

Abstract
Fluorescent probes have attracted special attention in developing optical sensor systems due to their reliable and rapid fluorescent response upon reaction with the analyte. Comparing to traditional fluorescent sensing systems that employ the intensity of only a single emission, ratiometric fluorescent sensors exhibit higher sensitivity and allow fast visual screening of analytes because of quantitatively analyzing analytes through the emission intensity ratio at two or more wavelengths. Lanthanide metal–organic frameworks (LnMOFs) are highly designable multifunctional luminescent materials as lanthanide ions, organic ligands, and guest metal ions or chromophores are all potential sources for luminescence. They thus have been widely employed as ratiometric fluorescent sensors. This mini review summarized the basic concept, optical features, construction strategies, and the ratiometric fluorescent sensing mechanisms of dual-emitting LnMOFs. The review ends with a discussion on the prospects, challenges, and new direction in designing LnMOF-based ratiometric fluorescent sensors.

Abstract
A simple, rapid, highly selective, and real-time determination of water is urgently required for preventing danger from water contamination in materials. Herein, the excited-state proton transfer (ESPT) concept-based luminescent sensor [Cd2(2,5-tpt)(4,5-idc)(H2O)4] (1) (2,5-tpt = 2,5-dihydroxyterephthalic acid and 4,5-idc = 4,5-imidazoledicarboxylic acid) has been designed for discriminative detection via enol-keto tautomerism. To improve the sensitivity, two-dimensional (2D) nanosheets of 1 have been synthesized by top-down liquid ultrasonic exfoliation technology for sensing water in dimethylformamide, which lead to fast detection (<30 s), high selectivity, broad-range detection (0-50% v/v), and a low detection limit value (0.25% v/v). This sensor can serve dual sensing mechanisms along with a luminescent color change via shifted emission (green→yellow) in low water content and a turn-off method in high water content. For ease of use, the test-strip paper-based 2D nanosheets of 1 have been prepared and applied for water detection with long-term stability, pH stability, and good reusability. On-site water detection in real time can be evaluated using a smartphone color-scanning application for quantitative scanometric assays coupled with test-strip paper-based 2D nanosheets of 1. Also, 1 can be utilized for a colorimetric luminescent thermometer in the ranges of physiological and high temperature with good linearity and recyclability.

Monitoring of reaction kinetics and determination of trace water in hydrophobic organic solvents by a smartphone-based ratiometric fluorescence device. Mikrochim Acta 2020; 187:564. Abstract
A smartphone-based ratiometric fluorescence device was designed to monitor the reaction kinetic process under vigorous mixing conditions, demonstrated by the hydrolysis of Cs4PbBr6 nanocrystals (NCs). In the presence of trace water, part of Cs4PbBr6 NCs (non-fluorescent) was converted to CsPbBr3 NCs (strong fluorescent). Using anthracene as the reference fluorophore, the brightness ratio of the green (from CsPbBr3 NCs) to blue (from anthracene) components in the fluorescence image which was recorded in situ by the smartphone camera was measured as the signal for kinetic analysis. It was shown that the water-triggered conversion reaction from Cs4PbBr6 NCs to CsPbBr3 NCs follows the pseudo-second-order kinetic model in the early rapid hydrolysis stage (up to 4 min). With increasing water content, the hydrolysis of Cs4PbBr6 NCs is promoted to yield more CsPbBr3 NCs, which was used to determine trace water in n-hexane, dichloromethane, and toluene with detection limits of 0.031, 0.043, and 0.057 μL mL-1, respectively. The device offers the advantages of portability and low cost for rapid field determination of trace water in hydrophobic organic solvents. Graphical abstract.

Abstract
Two new families of lanthanide antennas are described. 8-Methoxy-4,5-dihydrocyclopenta[de]quinolin-2(1H)-one phosphonates or carboxylates behave as selective antennas exhibiting Eu3+ luminescence in organic solvents, while quinolin-2(1H)-one analogues selectively sensitize the Tb3+ emission. These emissions are quenched by H2O addition. Based on this behaviour, the new lanthanide antennas can be used as highly sensitive water sensors.

Abstract
Developing a green, non-toxic and easy to synthesize of fluorescence probe for fast and visual detecting trace water in various organic solvents was an important task. Here, a novel dual-emission fluorescence probe (b/r-CDs) was designed based on the red CDs (r-CDs) and blue CDs (b-CDs) to detect the trace water and enhance the visualization for naked-eye observation in different organic solvents. Among, the red fluorescence carbon dots (CDs) was found to have the capability to monitor trace amounts of water, which synthesized with green tea by facile ultrasonic method. Further, Such a dual-emission probe could fast monitor trace water in various organic solvents with high stability and fast response. Importantly, a synergistic mechanism of the dynamic process (b-CDs) and static quenching (r-CDs) was proved for the study of water detection. Moreover, the test paper was made for detecting trace water in different organic solvents, achieving convenient and effective detection.
