Third-Order Nonlinear Optical Modulation Behavior of Photoresponsive Bimetallic MOFs

Bimetallic metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) capable of sensing external stimuli will provide more possibilities for further regulating third-order nonlinear optical (NLO) properties. In this work, we synthesized bimetallic MOFs (ZnCu-MOF and ZnCd-MOF) through central metal exchange using a photoresponsive Zn-MOF as a precursor. Compared with Zn-MOF, both ZnCu-MOF and ZnCd-MOF exhibit significantly enhanced third-order NLO absorption properties. This is mainly attributed to the introduction of metal ions with different electron configurations that can adjust the bandgap of MOFs and enhance electron delocalization, thus promoting electron transfer. Interestingly, the bimetallic MOFs show a transition from reverse saturation absorption (RSA) to saturation absorption (SA) after exposure to ultraviolet irradiation, as they retain the properties of directional photogenerated electron transfer. Photoresponsive bimetallic MOFs not only have the effect of bimetallic modulation of electronic structures but also have the characteristics of photoinduced electron transfer, exhibiting diversified optical properties. These findings provide a novel method for the development of multifunctional NLO materials.

The effect of conjugation degree of aromatic carboxylic acids on electronic and photo-responsive behaviors of naphthalenediimide-based coordination polymers

Three novel naphthalenediimide-based (NDI-based) coordination polymers (CPs), namely [Cd(3-PMNDI)(2,2'-BPDC)] (1), [Cd2(3-PMNDI)1.5(4,4'-BPDC)2(H2O)3]·DMF (2) and [Cd(3-PMNDI)(4,4'-SDC)] (3) (2,2'-H2BPDC = 2,2'-biphenyldicarboxylic acid, 4,4'-H2BPDC = 4,4'-biphenyldicarboxylic acid, 4,4'-H2SDC = 4,4'-stilbenedicarboxylic acid, 3-PMNDI = N,N'-bis(3-pyridylmethyl)-1,4,5,8-naphthalenediimide, and DMF = N,N'-dimethylformamide), have been designed and synthesized here from electron-deficient PMNDI (electron acceptors, EAs) and electron-rich aromatic carboxylic acids (electron donors, EDs) in the presence of cadmium ions. The introduction of aromatic carboxylic acids with different sizes and conjugation degrees leads to the generation of a two-dimensional (2D) layer in 1, a two-fold interpenetrated three-dimensional (3D) network in 2 and an eight-fold interpenetrated 3D framework in 3. Furthermore, the use of distinct electron-donating aromatic carboxylic acids and the consequent different numbers and strengths of lone pair-π and π-π interactions in the interfacial contacts of EDs/EAs give rise to distinct intermolecular charge transfer (ICT) and initial colors of the three CPs, and consequently cause different photoinduced intermolecular electron transfer (PIET) and distinguishing photo-responsive behaviors (weak photochromic performance for 1, excellent photochromic properties for 2 and non-photochromism for 3). This study indicates that an appropriate ICT is beneficial for PIET, but too weak or too strong ICT is not conducive to PIET, which provides an effective strategy for the construction of functional CPs with distinguishing photo-responsive properties through the subtle balance of ICT and PIET.

The modulation effect of auxiliary ligands on photochromic properties of 3D naphthalene diimide coordination polymers

Two novel naphthalene diimide (NDI) coordination polymers (CPs), [Cd(NicNDI)(4,4'-SBC)] (1) and [Cd(NicNDI)(2,2'-BPC)] (2) (NicNDI = (3-pyridylacylamino)-1,4,5,8-naphthalene diimide, 4,4'-SBC = 4,4'-stilbene dicarboxylic acid, 2,2'-BPC = 2,2'-biphenyl dicarboxylic acid), were designed and prepared by the combination of electron-deficient NicNDI and electron-rich aromatic carboxylic acid ligands in the presence of cadmium ions. The usage of aromatic carboxylic acid ligands with different conjugation degrees, sizes, shapes and charge densities leads to the generation of distinct interpenetrated three-dimensional (3D) frameworks. Interestingly, photochromism of 1 and weak photoactivity of 2 should be attributed to the introduction of different auxiliary ligands and consequently the formation of distinct interfacial contacts of electron donors (EDs)/electron acceptors (EAs) (d_π-π = 3.427 Å, infinite -ED-EA-ED-EA- for 1vs. d_π-π = 3.634 Å, discrete ED-EA-ED for 2), suggesting a subtle modulating effect of auxiliary ligands on interfacial contacts, photoinduced intermolecular electron transfer (PIET) and photoresponsive behaviors.

Hybrid Photochromic Lanthanide Phosphonate with Multiple Photoresponsive Functionalities

Hybrid photochromic materials (HPMs) with specific photoresponsive functionality have applications in many fields. The photoinduced electron-transfer (ET) strategy has been proved to be effective in the synthesis of HPMs with diverse photomodulated properties. The exploitation of new electron acceptors (EAs) is meaningful for promoting the development of HPMs. In this work, we introduced a rigid tetraimidazole derivative, 3,3,5,5-tetra(imidazol-1-yl)-1,1-biphenyl (TIBP) as a potential EA, into a metal-diphosphonate (1-hydroxyethylidene-1,1-diphosphonic acid, H₄-HEDP) system to explore HPMs and finally obtained a hybrid metal phosphonate (H₄-TIBP)_0.5·[Dy(H-HEDP) (H₂-HEDP)]·H₂O (1). 1 features anionic chains composed of diphosphonate and Dy³⁺ ions. The extra charge is balanced by protonated TIBP cations, which exist in the void of adjacent chains and form H-bonds with O_phosphonate (N-H···O). Upon photostimulation with a Xe lamp (300 W), the crystalline sample 1 exhibited coloration by changing from colorless to pale yellow because of the presence of photoinduced radicals that originated from the ET from O_phosphonate to N_TIBP. Along with the coloration, photomodulated fluorescence, magnetism, and proton conductivity were also detected in the photoactivated samples. Different from the reported HPMs based on polypyridine derivatives and photoactive species such as pyridinium and naphthalimide derivatives as EAs, our study provides a new category of EA units to yield HPMs with fascinating photoresponsive functionality via the assembly of polyimidazole derivatives and phosphonate-based supramolecular building blocks.

Photochemical and Electrochemical Applications of Proton-Coupled Electron Transfer in Organic Synthesis

We present here a review of the photochemical and electrochemical applications of multi-site proton-coupled electron transfer (MS-PCET) in organic synthesis. MS-PCETs are redox mechanisms in which both an electron and a proton are exchanged together, often in a concerted elementary step. As such, MS-PCET can function as a non-classical mechanism for homolytic bond activation, providing opportunities to generate synthetically useful free radical intermediates directly from a wide variety of common organic functional groups. We present an introduction to MS-PCET and a practitioner's guide to reaction design, with an emphasis on the unique energetic and selectivity features that are characteristic of this reaction class. We then present chapters on oxidative N-H, O-H, S-H, and C-H bond homolysis methods, for the generation of the corresponding neutral radical species. Then, chapters for reductive PCET activations involving carbonyl, imine, other X═Y π-systems, and heteroarenes, where neutral ketyl, α-amino, and heteroarene-derived radicals can be generated. Finally, we present chapters on the applications of MS-PCET in asymmetric catalysis and in materials and device applications. Within each chapter, we subdivide by the functional group undergoing homolysis, and thereafter by the type of transformation being promoted. Methods published prior to the end of December 2020 are presented.

Modulating the structure and photochromic performance of hybrid metal chlorides with nonphotochromic 1,10-phenanthroline and its derivative

Hybrid photochromic materias (HPMs), especially crystalline HPMs (CHPMs), have been widely investigated due to their feasibility in maintaining the advantages of each constituent and genearating captivating photomodulated functionality. Metal-organic complexes (MOCs), as promising candidates for fabricating CHPMs, have attracted the interest of researchers. The molecular predesign of ligands plays a crucial role in yielding MOC-based CHPMs with tunable photochromic functionality. Hitherto, a great majority of CHPMs are driven by photosensitive ligands. However, the complicated synthesis and high cost of photosensitive ligands obviously prevent the macro-synthesis and future application of these CHPMs. Thus, it is indispensable to explore novel branches of CHPMs. Herein, we report a series of photochromic solid materials bearing modulated photochromic properties by hybridizing metal chlorides with a nonphotosensitive coplanar dipyridine unit 1,10-phenanthroline (phen) and its derivative 5-chloro-1,10-phenanthroline (5-Cl-phen). The resulting hybrids, [ZnCl₂(phen)] (1), [CdCl₂(phen)] (2), [PbCl₂(phen)] (3), [ZnCl(H₂O)(5-Cl-phen)₂]Cl·2H₂O (4), [Cd₂Cl₄(5-Cl-phen)₂] (5) and [Pb₂Cl₄(5-Cl-phen)₂] (6), exhibit distinct structures from the isolated molecular complexes (1 and 4) to the hybrid chain (2, 3, 5 and 6) because of the distinct coordination mode of central metal ions and chloride ions. After photo-irradiation with a Xe-lamp, all complexes, as expected, exhibited apparent color change because of the photoinduced electron transfer (ET) between coordinated chloride ions (Cl^-) as electron donors (EDs) and the coordinated coplanar phen and 5-Cl-phen species as electron acceptors (EAs). More importantly, the photochromic performance of the title complexes could be modulated by phen and 5-Cl-phen. This study provides a general and facile way for modulating the structure and photochromic performance of hybrid metal chlorides with phen or phen-based derivatives under the synergy of crystalline engineering strategy and ET mechanism.

Integrated Photoresponsive Alkaline Earth Metal Coordination Networks: Synthesis, Topology, Photochromism and Photoluminescence Investigation

Photoresponsive materials are a key part of the age of smart technology that have potential in a broad range of applications. Coordination networks (CNs) are widely used due to their designability and stability. In this work, three novel alkaline earth metal coordination networks (AEM-CNs): [Mg(CMNDI)(H₂ O)₂ ], [Ca(CMNDI)(H₂ O)₂ ]⋅H₂ O, and [Sr(CMNDI)(H₂ O)(DMF)] with fsl, cds, and scn topology nets were synthetized via N,N'-bis(carboxymethyl)-1,4,5,8-naphthalenediimide (H₂ CMNDI); the scn net is not found in the Reticular Chemistry Structure Resource or ToposPro. The reusable and sensitive photochromic properties of the three CNs enable them to be used as secret inks or ultraviolet detectors. In addition, the CNs also exhibited reusable photoluminescent turn-off toward the drug molecules, balsalazide disodium (Bal.) and colchicine (Col.), with good limits of detection of 0.16 and 0.70 μM. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study of a fluorescence sensor for Bal. Thus, the AEM-CNs provide a design idea for integrated photoresponsive materials that could be further improved in the near future by further study.

Proton Conduction of Nafion Hybrid Membranes Promoted by NH3-Modified Zn-MOF with Host-Guest Collaborative Hydrogen Bonds for H2/O2 Fuel Cell Applications

It is of great significance to develop creative proton exchange membrane materials for proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs). The strategy of doping metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with guest molecules into the Nafion matrix is adopted to improve the electrochemical performance of Nafion hybrid membranes. Various and abundant hydrogen bonds can make a tremendous contribution to the proton conduction of hybrid membranes. In this work, we used high proton-conducting Zn-MOFs with the characteristics of host-guest collaborative hydrogen bonds as the filler to prepare Zn-MOF/Nafion hybrid membranes. Alternating current (AC) impedance tests show that when the doping amount of Zn-MOF is 5%, the proton conductivity reaches 7.29 × 10^-3 S·cm^-1, being 1.87 times that of the pure Nafion membrane at 58% relative humidity (RH) and 80 °C. In an attempt to prove the promotion effect of guest NH₃ on proton conductivity of Nafion hybrid membranes, Zn-MOF-NH₃ was filled into the Nafion matrix. Under the same conditions, its proton conductivity reaches the maximum value of 2.13 × 10^-2 S·cm^-1, which is 5.47 times that of the pure Nafion membrane. Zn-MOF-NH₃/Nafion-5 was used to fabricate a proton exchange membrane for application in H₂/O₂ fuel cells. The maximum power density of 212 mW cm^-2 and a current density of 630 mA cm^-2 reveal a respectable single cell performance. This study provides a promising method for optimizing the structure of MOF proton conductors and inspires the preparation of high-performance Nafion hybrid membranes.

Decorating Metal Nitrate with a Coplanar Bipyridine Moiety: A Simple and General Method for Fabricating Photochromic Complexes

As a significant class of photochromic materials, crystalline hybrid photochromic materials (CHPMs) have attracted widespread attention of researchers because of their possibilities for generating other photoresponsive properties and advantages in understanding the underlying relationship between structure and photoresponsive performance. The predesign of suitable ligands plays a major role in generating desirable CHPMs. Hitherto, most CHPMs have been built from photodeformable or photoresponsive tectons. However, the synthesis of these ligands is usually time-consuming and expensive, and this greatly restricts their large-scale preparation and practical application. Therefore, it is necessary to explore new families of CHPMs besides the existing CHPMs. Herein, a simple and general method for constructing CHPMs by decorating metal nitrate with a coplanar bipyridine moiety, namely 1,10-phenanthroline (phen), is reported. The resulting products exhibit photocoloration in response to Xe-lamp irradiation. The electron transfer (ET) from the coplanar NO₃ ^- species (as π-electron donors, π-EDs) to coplanar phen moieties (as π-electron acceptors, π-EAs) is responsible for the resulting photochromism. The influence of the coordination environment and central metal ion on the photochromism was also studied. This work demonstrates that the introduction of coplanar organic tectons as π-EAs to metal nitrates as π-EDs with the collaboration of ET and coordination-assembly strategies is a simple and general method to manufacture CHPMs.

Two MOF-based host–guest compounds were prepared by incorporating viologen into an anionic framework, and exhibited photochromism upon irradiation with various light sources. Moreover, their luminescence properties can be switched by irradiation.

On the limit of proton-coupled electronic doping in a Ti(iv)-containing MOF

Ti^IV-containing metal–organic frameworks are known to accumulate electrons in their conduction bands, accompanied by protons, when irradiated in the presence of alcohols. The archetypal system, MIL-125, was recently shown to reach a limit of 2e⁻ per Ti₈ octomeric node. However, the origin of this limit and the broader applicability of this unique chemistry relies not only on the presence of Ti^IV, but also access to inorganic inner-sphere Lewis basic anions in the MOF nodes. Here, we study the loading of protons and electrons in MIL-125, and assess the thermodynamic limit of doping these materials. We find that the limit is determined by the reduction potential of protons: in high charging regimes the MOF exceeds the H⁺/H₂ potential. Generally, we offer the design principle that inorganic anions in MOF nodes can host adatomic protons, which may stabilize meta-stable low valent transition metals. This approach highlights the unique chemistry afforded by MOFs built from inorganic clusters, and provides one avenue to developing novel catalytic scaffolds for hydrogen evolution and transfer hydrogenation.
