Activation of olefin metathesis complexes containing unsymmetrical unsaturated N-heterocyclic carbenes by copper and gold transmetalation

Impact of o-aryl halogen effects on ethylene polymerization: steric vs. electronic effects

Ligand steric hindrance and electronic effects play a crucial role in late-transition metal-catalyzed olefin polymerization. In this research, a series of o-aryl halogenated α-diimine ligands bearing bulky dibenzhydryl substituents, along with their corresponding nickel catalysts, have been synthesized and thoroughly characterized. The nickel catalysts demonstrated very high activity in ethylene polymerization, achieving a high rate of up to 107 g mol-1 h-1. The produced polyethylenes displayed a broad spectrum of molecular weights (12.2-871.7 kg mol-1) but maintained consistent branching densities (50-82/1000 C) when polymerized at a fixed temperature with different nickel catalysts. Notably, the polymerization temperature has a significant influence on both the molecular weight and branching density of the resulting polyethylene. Higher temperatures led to the formation of polyethylenes with lower molecular weights and increased branching densities. Interestingly, the o-aryl halogens significantly impact the molecular weight of the polyethylene. The size of the halogen substituents primarily determines the molecular weight of the polyethylene. However, in terms of branching density, the steric and electronic effects of these substituents appear to counteract each other. In addition, the branched high molecular weight polyethylenes from the bromine and chlorine substituted nickel catalysts are excellent polyethylene thermoplastic elastomers with high strain at break values (688-2478%) and high strain recovery values (42-62%).

PhotoROMP: The Future Is Bright

Since the earliest investigations of olefin metathesis catalysis, light has been the choice for controlling the catalyst activity on demand. From the perspective of energy efficiency, temporal and spatial control, and selectivity, photochemistry is not only an attractive alternative to traditional thermal manufacturing techniques but also arguably a superior manifold for advanced applications like additive manufacturing (AM). In the last three decades, pioneering work in the field of ring-opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP) has broadened the scope of material properties achievable through AM, particularly using light as both an activating and deactivating stimulus. In this Perspective, we explore trends in photocontrolled ROMP systems with an emphasis on approaches to photoinduced activation and deactivation of metathesis catalysts. Recent work has yielded a myriad of commercial and synthetically accessible photosensitive catalyst systems, although comparatively little attention has been paid to achieving precise control over polymer morphology using light. Metal-free, photophysical, and living ROMP systems have also been relatively underexplored. To take fuller advantage of both the thermomechanical properties of ROMP polymers and the operational simplicity of photocontrol, clear directions for the field are to improve the reversibility of activation and deactivation strategies as well as to further develop photocontrolled approaches to tuning cross-link density and polymer tacticity.

A Self-Healing System for Polydicyclopentadiene Thermosets

Self-healing offers promise for addressing structural failures, increasing lifespan, and improving durability in polymeric materials. Implementing self-healing in thermoset polymers faces significant manufacturing challenges, especially due to the elevated temperature requirements of thermoset processing. To introduce self-healing into structural thermosets, the self-healing system must be thermally stable and compatible with the thermoset chemistry. This article demonstrates a self-healing microcapsule-based system stable to frontal polymerization (FP), a rapid and energy-efficient manufacturing process with a self-propagating exothermic reaction (≈200 °C). A thermally latent Grubbs-type complex bearing two N-heterocyclic carbene ligands addresses limitations in conventional G2-based self-healing approaches. Under FP's elevated temperatures, the catalyst remains dormant until activated by a Cu(I) co-reagent, ensuring efficient polymerization of the dicyclopentadiene (DCPD) upon damage to the polyDCPD matrix. The two-part microcapsule system consists of one capsule containing the thermally latent Grubbs-type catalyst dissolved in the solvent, and another capsule containing a Cu(I) coagent blended with liquid DCPD monomer. Using the same chemistry for both matrix fabrication and healing results in strong interfaces as demonstrated by lap-shear tests. In an optimized system, the self-healing system restores the mechanical properties of the tough polyDCPD thermoset. Self-healing efficiencies greater than 90% via tapered double cantilever beam tests are observed.

Photoredox-Initiated Frontal Ring-Opening Metathesis Polymerization

Herein, we report the development of a photoredox-initiated frontal ring-opening metathesis polymerization (FROMP) chemical system. We found that a ruthenium-based, bis-N-heterocyclic carbene metathesis precatalyst was activated with 9-mesityl-10-phenylacridindium tetrafluoroborate, copper(II) triflate, and a 455 nm light source. This chemistry was used to initiate the FROMP of dicyclopentadiene; once initiated, the heat released from the polymerization sustained a well-controlled reaction front. Variation in copper or metathesis precatalyst loading yielded front speeds ranging from 0.15 to 0.43 mm s^-1 and front temperatures ranging from 140 to 205 °C. While the glass transition temperatures of the resultant polymers are lower than those derived with Grubbs' second-generation catalyst, this chemical system provides extended pot life.

CuI-Catalyzed Coupling Reactions of 4-Iodopyrazoles and Alcohols: Application toward Withasomnine and Homologs

The direct 4-alkoxylation of 4-iodo-1H-pyrazoles with alcohols was achieved by a CuI-catalyzed coupling protocol. The optimal reaction conditions employed excess alcohol and potassium t-butoxide (2 equiv) in the presence of CuI (20 mol%) and 3,4,7,8-tetramethyl-1,10-phenanthroline (20 mol%) at 130 °C for 1 h under microwave irradiation. The present method was efficiently applied to the synthesis of withasomnine and its six- and seven-membered cyclic homologs.
