[Au7Ag9(dppf)3(CF3CO2)7BF4]n: a linear nanocluster polymer from molecular Au7Ag8 clusters covalently linked by silver atoms

Large Scale Synthesis of a Stable Prefunctionalized Silver Nanocluster

Due to the stability issue, It is difficult to prepare a silver nanocluster bearing functional sites, especially at a large scale. We report the synthesis and structure of a stable silver nanocluster bearing multiple surface aldehyde groups [Ag21(Ph2PO2)10(p-CHOPhC≡C)6]SbF6, which allows for postsynthesis modification such as surface functionalization through aldimine condensation to give homochiral clusters. Remarkably, the preparation of this cluster can be done in ~90 % high yield at gram scale, which facilitates further studies and potential applications. Through DFT calculations and geometric structure analysis, the high stability of this cluster is attributed to the geometric closure and electronic structure. This is the first time that an effective one-pot method has been developed to synthesize functional silver nanoclusters in high yield. The title cluster will be useful in the development of a variety of cluster-based materials.

An Au5Ag12(SR)9(dppf)4 alloy nanocluster: structural determination and optical property and photothermal conversion investigation

Photothermal conversion has garnered significant attention due to its potential for efficient energy conversion and application in targeted therapies. However, controlling photothermal properties at the atomic level remains a challenge in current materials synthesis. In this study, we report the synthesis and structural determination of a phosphine and mercaptan co-protected Au5Ag12(SR)9(dppf)4 (Au5Ag12) nanocluster with an extremely low quantum yield (∼0%). For comparative purposes, we synthesized three alloy nanoclusters of similar size. Notably, Au5Ag12 demonstrates a remarkably superior photothermal conversion performance, significantly outperforming the other clusters. We investigated this variance from both absorption and emission perspectives. This research not only opens new avenues for the application of clusters with extremely low quantum yields, but also provides experimental evidence for understanding the photothermal conversion properties of cluster materials at the atomic level.

Alkynyl-Protected Bimetallic Nanoclusters with a Hybrid Mackay Icosahedral Ag42 Cu12 Cl Kernel and an Octahedral Ag22 Cu12 Kernel

A facile strategy that directly reduces alkynyl-silver precursors and copper salts for the synthesis of bimetallic nanoclusters using the weak reducing agent Ph2 SiH2 is demonstrated. Two alkynyl-protected concentric-shell nanoclusters, (Ph4 P)2 [Ag22 Cu12 (C≡CR)28 ] and (Ph4 P)3 [Ag42 Cu12 Cl(C≡CR)36 ] (Ag22 Cu12 and Ag42 Cu12 Cl, R=bis(trifluoromethyl)phenyl), were successfully obtained and characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction and electro-spray ionization mass spectrometry. For the first time, a hybrid 55-atom two-shell Mackay icosahedron was found in Ag42 Cu12 Cl, which is icosahedral M54 Cl instead of M55 . The incorporation of a chloride in the metal icosahedron contributes to the stability of the cluster from both electronic and geometric aspects. Alkynyl ligands show various binding-modes including linear "RC≡C-Cu-C≡CR" staple motifs.

Alkynyl-protected Ag20 Rh2 Nanocluster with Atomic Precision: Structure Analysis and Tri-functionality Catalytic Application

We report the overall structure and trifunctionality catalytic application of an atomically precise alloy nanocluster of Ag20 Rh2 (C≡C-t Bu)16 (CF3 CO2 )6 (H2 O)2 (abbreviated as Ag20 Rh2 hereafter). Ag20 Rh2 has a twisted rod-like structure, where a Ag4 @Rh2 kernel is connected by two twisted Ag8 cubes on two sides. Ag20 Rh2 is a superatomic cluster with four free valence electrons, and it has characteristic absorbance feature. Interestingly, Ag20 Rh2 exhibited superior catalytic performance than the larger AgRh nanoparticle counterparts in electrochemical hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), reduction of 4-nitrophenol, and the methyl orange degradation reaction. Such intriguing catalytic properties are attributed to the more exposed active sites from the ultrasmall nanoclusters than relatively large nanoparticles. This study not only enriches the family member of alkynyl-protected AgRh nanoclusters with atomic precision, but also highlights the great advantages of employing nanoclusters as efficient catalysts for multiple functionalities.

Recent developments in the investigation of driving forces for transforming coinage metal nanoclusters

Metal nanoclusters serve as an emerging class of modular nanomaterials. The transformation of metal nanoclusters has been fully reflected in their studies from every aspect, including the structural evolution analysis, physicochemical property regulation, and practical application promotion. In this review, we highlight the driving forces for transforming atomically precise metal nanoclusters and summarize the related transforming principles and fundamentals. Several driving forces for transforming nanoclusters are meticulously reviewed herein: ligand-exchange-induced transformations, metal-exchange-induced transformations, intercluster reactions, photochemical transformations, oxidation/reduction-induced transformations, and other factors (intrinsic instability, pH, temperature, and metal salts) triggering transformations. The exploitation of transforming principles to customize the preparations, structures, physicochemical properties, and practical applications of metal nanoclusters is also disclosed. At the end of this review, we provide our perspectives and highlight the challenges remaining for future research on the transformation of metal nanoclusters. Our intended audience is the broader scientific community interested in metal nanoclusters, and we believe that this review will provide researchers with a comprehensive synthetic toolbox and insights on the research fundamentals needed to realize more cluster-based nanomaterials with customized compositions, structures, and properties.

DppfCuBH4: new reducing agents for the synthesis of ferrocene-functionalized metal nanoclusters

A facile synthesis of atomically precise metal nanoclusters, especially those decorated with functional groups, is the prerequisite for finding applications in special fields and studying structure-and-property relationships. The exploration of simple and efficient synthetic prototypes for introducing functional ligands (such as ferrocene) into cluster moieties is thus of high interest. In this work, a type of reducing agent of dppfCuBH₄ (dppf is 1,1'-bis(diphenyphosphino)ferrocene) is introduced for the first time to prepare ferrocene-functionalized metal nanoclusters. Two new clusters of [Ag₂₅Cu₄(dppf)₆(3-F-PhCC)₁₂Cl₆]³⁺ (1) and [Ag₄(dppf)₅Cl₂]²⁺ (2) have been obtained from the simple synthetic method. The two compounds have been fully characterized by advanced techniques of electrospray ionization mass spectroscopy (ESI-MS), nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), and ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy (UV-Vis). The total structure of the clusters, as determined by X-ray single-crystal diffraction, describes the Ag₁₃@Ag₁₂Cu₄(dppf)₆(3-F-PhCC)₁₂Cl₆ core-shell structure of 1 and [Ag₂Cl(dppf)₂]⁺-dppf-[Ag₂Cl(dppf)₂]⁺ polymeric structure of 2. This work opens the door to employing dppfCuBH₄ as a functional reducing agent to discover many underlying metal nanoclusters and even other nanomaterials which feature ferrocene-groups.

Galvanic replacement-induced introduction of a heteroligand into bimetallic and trimetallic nanoclusters

Heteroleptic 8-electron silver-rich alloy nanoclusters, [Au@Au₄Ag₁₂(dtp)₇(PPh₃)₄]²⁺ (1) and [Pt@Au₄Ag₁₁(dtp)₇(PPh₃)₄] (2), were successfully synthesized via a galvanic replacement reaction of 1,1-dithiolate-protected M@Ag₂₀ (M = Au and Pt) nanoclusters with Au(I)-phosphine salts, leading to the alteration of the cluster nuclearity and geometry of shell skeletons but retaining the same 8-electron count.

Supercrystal engineering of atomically precise gold nanoparticles promoted by surface dynamics

The controllable packing of functional nanoparticles (NPs) into crystalline lattices is of interest in the development of NP-based materials. Here we demonstrate that the size, morphology and symmetry of such supercrystals can be tailored by adjusting the surface dynamics of their constituent NPs. In the presence of excess tetraethylammonium cations, atomically precise [Au₂₅(SR)₁₈]^- NPs (where SR is a thiolate ligand) can be crystallized into micrometre-sized hexagonal rod-like supercrystals, rather than as face-centred-cubic superlattices otherwise. Experimental characterization supported by theoretical modelling shows that the rod-like crystals consist of polymeric chains in which Au₂₅ NPs are held together by a linear SR-[Au(I)-SR]₄ interparticle linker. This linker is formed by conjugation of two dynamically detached SR-[Au(I)-SR]₂ protecting motifs from adjacent Au₂₅ particles, and is stabilized by a combination of CH⋯π and ion-pairing interactions between tetraethylammonium cations and SR ligands. The symmetry, morphology and size of the resulting supercrystals can be systematically tuned by changing the concentration and type of the tetraalkylammonium cations.

Total Structure of Bimetallic Core-Shell [Au42 Cd40 (SR)52 ]2- Nanocluster and Its Implications

Bimetallic core-shell nanostructures hold great promise in elucidating the bimetallic synergism. However, it remains a challenge to construct atomically precise core-shell with high-valence active metals on the gold surface. In this work, we report the total structure of a [Au₄₂ Cd₄₀ (SR)₅₂ ]^2- core-shell nanocluster and multiple implications. Single crystal X-ray diffraction (SCXRD) reveals that the structure possesses a two-shelled Au₆ @Au₃₆ core and a closed cadmium shell of Cd₄₀ , and the core-shell structure is then protected by 52 thiolate (-SR) ligands. The composition of the nanocluster is further confirmed by electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS). A catalytic test for styrene oxidation and a comparison with relevant nanoclusters reveal the surface effect on the catalytic activity and selectivity.

Toward Controlling the Electronic Structures of Chemically Modified Superatoms of Gold and Silver

Atomically precise gold/silver clusters protected by organic ligands L, [(Au/Ag)_x L_y ]^z , have gained increasing interest as building units of functional materials because of their novel photophysical and physicochemical properties. The properties of [(Au/Ag)_x L_y ]^z are intimately associated with the quantized electronic structures of the metallic cores, which can be viewed as superatoms from the analogy of naked Au/Ag clusters. Thus, establishment of the correlation between the geometric and electronic structures of the superatomic cores is crucial for rational design and improvement of the properties of [(Au/Ag)_x L_y ]^z . This review article aims to provide a qualitative understanding on how the electronic structures of [(Au/Ag)_x L_y ]^z are affected by geometric structures of the superatomic cores with a focus on three factors: size, shape, and composition, on the basis of single-crystal X-ray diffraction data. The knowledge accumulated here will constitute a basis for the development of ligand-protected Au/Ag clusters as new artificial elements on a nanometer scale.

New Routes for Multicomponent Atomically Precise Metal Nanoclusters

Atomically precise metal nanoclusters (NCs), protected by a monolayer of ligands, are regarded as potential building blocks for advanced technologies. They are considered as intermediates between the atomic/molecular regime and the bulk. Incorporation of foreign metals in NCs enhances several of their properties such as catalytic activity, luminescence, and so on; hence, it is of high importance for tuning their properties and broadening the scope of applications. In most of the cases, enhancement in specific properties was observed upon alloying due to the synergistic effect. In the past several years, many alloy clusters have been synthesized, which show a tremendous change in the properties than their monometallic analogs. However, controlling the synthesis and tuning the structures of alloy NCs with atomic precision are major challenges. Various synthetic methodologies have been developed so far for the controlled synthesis of alloy NCs. In this perspective, we have highlighted those diverse synthetic routes to prepare alloys, which include co-reduction, galvanic reduction, antigalvanic reduction, metal deposition, ligand exchange, intercluster reaction, and reaction of NCs with bulk metals. Advancement in synthetic procedures will help in the preparation of alloy NCs with the desired structure and composition. Future perceptions concerning the progress of alloy nanocluster science are also provided.

New atomically precise (M = Au/Ag) nanoclusters as excellent oxygen reduction reaction catalysts

By introducing 1,1'-bis-(diphenylphosphino)ferrocene (dppf) as an activating ligand, two novel nanoclusters, M1Ag21 (M = Au/Ag), have been controllably synthesized and structurally characterized. The atomically precise structures of the M1Ag21 nanoclusters were determined by SCXC and further confirmed by ESI-TOF-MS, TGA, XPS, DPV, and FT-IR measurements. The M1Ag21 nanoclusters supported on activated carbon (C) are exploited as efficient oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalysts in alkaline solutions. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations verify that the catalytic activities of the two cluster-based systems originate from the significant ensemble synergy effect between the M13 kernel and dppf ligand in M1Ag21. This work sheds lights on the preparation of cluster-based electrocatalysts and other catalysts that are activated and modified by peripheral ligands.

Atomically precise alloy nanoclusters: syntheses, structures, and properties

Metal nanoclusters fill the gap between discrete atoms and plasmonic nanoparticles, providing unique opportunities for investigating the quantum effects and precise structure-property correlations at the atomic level. As a versatile strategy, alloying can largely improve the physicochemical performances compared to the corresponding homo-metal nanoclusters, and thus benefit the applications of such nanomaterials. In this review, we highlight the achievements of atomically precise alloy nanoclusters, and summarize the alloying principles and fundamentals, including the synthetic methods, site-preferences for different heteroatoms in the templates, and alloying-induced structure and property changes. First, based on various Au or Ag nanocluster templates, heteroatom doping modes are presented. The templates with electronic shell-closing configurations tend to maintain their structures during doping, while the others may undergo transformation and give rise to alloy nanoclusters with new structures. Second, alloy nanoclusters of specific magic sizes are reviewed. The arrangement of different atoms is related to the symmetry of the structures; that is, different atoms are symmetrically located in the nanoclusters of smaller sizes, and evolve into shell-by-shell structures at larger sizes. Then, we elaborate on the alloying effects in terms of optical, electrochemical, electroluminescent, magnetic and chiral properties, as well as the stability and reactivity via comparisons between the doped nanoclusters and their homo-metal counterparts. For example, central heteroatom-induced photoluminescence enhancement is emphasized. The applications of alloy nanoclusters in catalysis, chemical sensing, bio-labeling, and other fields are further discussed. Finally, we provide perspectives on existing issues and future efforts. Overall, this review provides a comprehensive synthetic toolbox and controllable doping modes so as to achieve more alloy nanoclusters with customized compositions, structures, and properties for applications. This review is based on publications available up to February 2020.

One-, Two-, and Three-Dimensional Self-Assembly of Atomically Precise Metal Nanoclusters

Metal nanoclusters (NCs), which consist of several, to about one hundred, metal atoms, have attracted much attention as functional nanomaterials for use in nanotechnology. Because of their fine particle size, metal NCs exhibit physical/chemical properties and functions different from those of the corresponding bulk metal. In recent years, many techniques to precisely synthesize metal NCs have been developed. However, to apply these metal NCs in devices and as next-generation materials, it is necessary to assemble metal NCs to a size that is easy to handle. Recently, multiple techniques have been developed to form one-, two-, and three-dimensional connected structures (CSs) of metal NCs through self-assembly. Further progress of these techniques will promote the development of nanomaterials that take advantage of the characteristics of metal NCs. This review summarizes previous research on the CSs of metal NCs. We hope that this review will allow readers to obtain a general understanding of the formation and functions of CSs and that the obtained knowledge will help to establish clear design guidelines for fabricating new CSs with desired functions in the future.

Solvent-mediated assembly of atom-precise gold-silver nanoclusters to semiconducting one-dimensional materials

Bottom-up design of functional device components based on nanometer-sized building blocks relies on accurate control of their self-assembly behavior. Atom-precise metal nanoclusters are well-characterizable building blocks for designing tunable nanomaterials, but it has been challenging to achieve directed assembly to macroscopic functional cluster-based materials with highly anisotropic properties. Here, we discover a solvent-mediated assembly of 34-atom intermetallic gold-silver clusters protected by 20 1-ethynyladamantanes into 1D polymers with Ag-Au-Ag bonds between neighboring clusters as shown directly by the atomic structure from single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. Density functional theory calculations predict that the single crystals of cluster polymers have a band gap of about 1.3 eV. Field-effect transistors fabricated with single crystals of cluster polymers feature highly anisotropic p-type semiconductor properties with ≈1800-fold conductivity in the direction of the polymer as compared to cross directions, hole mobility of ≈0.02 cm² V^-1 s^-1, and an ON/OFF ratio up to ≈4000. This performance holds promise for further design of functional cluster-based materials with highly anisotropic semiconducting properties.
