Water Content-Controlled Formation and Transformation of Concomitant Pseudopolymorph Coordination Polymers

Two concomitant pseudopolymorph coordination polymers {[Cd₂L₂(OAc)₄]·2DMSO} _n (1) and {[CdL(OAc)₂]·2.75H₂O} _n (2) were synthesized by self-assembly of 1,4-bis(4-pyridyl)-2,3-diaza-1,3-butadiene (L) and cadmium acetate in DMSO. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction confirmed that 1D ladder structural motifs exist for pseudopolymorphs 1 and 2 which contain DMSO and water guest molecules, respectively. Our study illustrated the active role of solvent water content in obtaining compound 2. We find that the presence of water as an impurity in the DMSO solvent creates the possibility of formation of concomitant pseudopolymorph coordination polymers which is a unique event. Furthermore, our analyses showed the effect of environmental humidity on the transformation of unstable compound 1. 1D ladder pseudopolymorphic compound 1 could be transformed to guest-free 1D linear compound [CdL(OAc)₂(H₂O)] _n (3') (the powder form of single crystals of 3) through a scarce case of water absorption from air. Also, the crystalline material of coordination polymer 3 was transformed to coordination polymer 2 through the dissolution-recrystallization structural transformation process in DMF or DMSO. Our study clarified that the amount of water in the reaction container can control the formation of one of the compounds 2 or 3. In the presence of a significant amount of water, compound 3 (coordinated water) will be produced, whereas if a small amount of water is present, compound 2 (uncoordinated water) is prepared as an exclusive product.

A multi-functional two-dimensional Zn(ii)-organic framework for selective carbon dioxide adsorption, sensing of nitrobenzene and Cr2O72−

A novel two-dimensional coordination polymer {[(CH3)2NH2][Zn2(L)2]·DMF}n was synthesized. It exhibits good selective adsorption for CO2; moreover, it shows high selectivity and sensitivity for NB and Cr2O72− ions.

Luminescence tuning and sensing properties of stable 2D lanthanide metal–organic frameworks built with symmetrical flexible tricarboxylic acid ligands containing ether oxygen bonds

New Ln-MOFs were yielded by a flexible ligand and lanthanide ions. The colors can be regulated by adjusting the molar ratios of Eu³⁺/Tb³⁺, showing promising applications in NB sensing, tunable photoluminescence and pH sensing.

Magnetic metal organic frameworks/graphene oxide adsorbent for the removal of U(VI) from aqueous solution

A well-defined magnetic metal organic frameworks (MOFs)/graphene oxide (Fe₃O₄@HKUST-1/GO) consisting of magnetic Fe₃O₄ nanoparticles, HKUST-1 nanocrystal and GO was synthesized through a simple and environmentally friendly approach. Characterizations of Fe₃O₄@HKUST-1/GO adsorbing U(VI) with high-resolution transmission electron microscopy suggested that the Fe₃O₄@HKUST-1/GO possessed good stability. The introduction of GO enhanced the ability of particles to uptake U(VI) from aqueous solution. The effects of solution pH, contact time and temperature on U(VI) adsorption were systematically tested by intermittent experiments. The adsorption process can be better described by the Langmuir model and the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The results showed that the Fe₃O₄@HKUST-1/GO exhibited good adsorption capacity towards U(VI) at the initial solution pH value of 4.0 and T = 318 K. The X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy was used to analyze the U(VI) removal mechanism. This work represents the application of Fe₃O₄@HKUST-1/GO as a novel adsorbent to extract U(VI) from contaminated water.
