Efficient Direct X-ray Detection and Imaging Based on a Lead-Free Electron Donor-Acceptor MOF

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have recently gained extensive attention as potential materials for direct radiation detection due to their strong radiation absorption, long-range order, and chemical tunability. However, it remains challenging to develop a practical MOF-based X-ray direct detector that possesses high X-ray detection efficiency, radiation stability, and environmental friendliness. The integration of donor-acceptor (D-A) pairs into crystalline MOFs is a powerful strategy for the precise fabrication of multifunctional materials with unique optoelectronic properties. Herein, a new lead-free MOF, Cu2I2(TPPA) (CuI-TPPA, TPPA = tris[4-(pyridine-4-yl)phenyl]amine), with a 6-fold interpenetrated structure is designed and synthesized based on the electron donor-acceptor strategy. CuI-TPPA has a large mobility-lifetime (μτ) product of 5.8 × 10-4 cm2 V-1 and a high detection sensitivity of 73.1 μC Gyair-1 cm-2, surpassing that of commercial α-Se detectors. Moreover, the detector remains fairly stable with only a 2% reduction in photocurrent under continuous bias irradiation conditions with a total dose of over 42.83 Gyair. The CuI-TPPA/poly(vinylidene fluoride) flexible composite X-ray detector films are successfully manufactured with different thicknesses. Through multifaceted assessments, the optimal thickness is found with a high detection sensitivity of up to 143.6 μC Gyair-1 cm-2. As proof-of-concept, 11 × 9 pixelated X-ray detectors are fabricated on the same composite film to realize X-ray direct imaging. This work opens up potential applications of MOFs in environmentally friendly and wearable devices for direct X-ray detection and imaging.

Embedding Lanthanide Organic Polyhedra into Mesoporous Silica Nanoparticles for the Photocatalytic Degradation of Organic Dyes

Organic pollutants cause severe environmental problems because of their damage to human health and ecological systems. Photocatalytic degradation of persistent organic pollutants is of great importance to address these hazards. Herein, we report a lanthanide organic polyhedra-based hybrid material Gd₈ L₁₂ ⊂MSN with the capability of photocatalytic dye degradation. Gd₈ L₁₂ ⊂MSN was prepared by embedding the Gd₈ L₁₂ complex into mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs) using a "ship-in-a-bottle" strategy. Photocurrent response tests revealed that this hybrid material is a potential semiconductor and could generate a rapid and steady photocurrent upon irradiation. Further dye degradation experiments indicated that it could photocatalyze the degradation of familiar organic dyes. Thereinto, compared with the critical Gd₈ L₁₂ complex, the hybrid material exhibited an acceleration of 2.4 times and realized reusability. This not only offers a potential advanced photocatalyst for degrading persistent organic pollutants, but also provides a strategy for the application of supramolecular materials in environmental science.

Donor-Acceptor Hybrid Heterostructures: An Emerging Class of Photoactive Materials with Inorganic and Organic Semiconductive Components

Just as the heterojunctions in physics, donor-acceptor (D-A) heterostructures are an emerging class of photoactive materials fabricated from two semiconductive components at the molecular level. Among them, D-A hybrid heterostructures from organic and inorganic semiconductive components have attracted extensive attention in the past decades due to their combined advantages of high stability for the inorganic semiconductors and modifiability for the organic semiconductors, which are particularly beneficial to efficiently achieve photoinduced charge separation and transfer upon irradiations. In this review, by analogy with the heterojunctions in physics, a definition of the D-A heterostructures and their general design and synthetic strategies are given. Meanwhile, the D-A hybrid heterostructures are focused on and their recent advances in potential applications of photochromism, photomodulated luminescence, and photocatalysis summarized.

A fourfold interpenetrating three-dimensional cadmium(II) coordination polymer: synthesis, crystal structure and physical properties

A novel three-dimensional Cd^II coordination framework, namely, poly[{μ-bis[4-(2-methylimidazol-1-yl)phenyl] ether-κ²N³:N^3'}(μ-naphthalene-1,4-dicarboxylato-κ³O¹:O⁴,O^4')cadmium(II)], [Cd(C₁₂H₆O₄)(C₂₀H₁₈N₄O)]_n or [Cd(1,4-NDC)(BMIOPE)]_n, where 1,4-H₂NDC is naphthalene-1,4-dicarboxylic acid and BMIOPE is bis[4-(2-methylimidazol-1-yl)phenyl] ether, has been prepared and characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, elemental analysis, IR spectroscopy and thermogravimetric analysis. The compound displays a novel fourfold interpenetrating diamond-like network. In addition, it not only shows a strong fluorescence emission in the solid state, but also exhibits excellent photocatalytic activity for the degradation of methylene blue (MB) at room temperature.

The modulation effect of pi–pi interactions on the electronic and photochromic properties of viologen complexes containing N,N′-bis(carboxyethyl)-4,4′-bipyridinium

Two viologen complexes containing N,N′-bis(carboxyethyl)-4,4′-bipyridinium (BCEbpy) were prepared, namely [Zn(H₂O)₆]·(BCEbpy)·(p-BDC)·3H₂O (1) and [Co(H₂O)₆]·(BCEbpy)·(p-BDC)·3H₂O (2) (p-H₂BDC = 1,4-benzenedicarboxylic acid), and their crystal structures, photochromism, frontier molecular orbitals, Hirshfeld surfaces and 2D fingerprint plots were investigated. The modulation effects of pi–pi interactions were explored on the electronic and photochromic properties of compounds 1 and 2. Due to the existence of photo-response viologen radicals, both complexes 1 and 2 display excellent photo-response properties in the sequence 1 < 2. The results indicate that compound 1 exhibits intramolecular electron transfer; compound 2 exhibits both intramolecular and intermolecular electron transfer, which is mainly due to the change of electronic and steric structures caused by pi–pi interactions with a faster photo-response rate than that of compound 1. The donor–acceptor modes, matching principles and inter/intramolecular atom–atom close contacts were illustrated by the density functional theory (DFT)-B3LYP/6-311(d,p) method.

Two viologen complexes containing BCEbpy were prepared and displayed excellent photo-response properties by the modulation effect of pi–pi interactions.

Luminescence sensing and photocatalytic activities of four Zn(ii)/Co(ii) coordination polymers based on a pyridinephenyl bifunctional ligand

Four Zn(ii)/Co(ii) CPs act as bifunctional materials in the detection of Fe(iii) cation, Cr(vi) anion, and nitrofuran antibiotics and removal of methylene blue in aqueous media.

A twofold interpenetrating two-dimensional zinc(II) coordination polymer: synthesis, crystal structure and physical properties

A novel twofold interpenetrating two-dimensional (2D) Zn^II coordination framework, poly[[(μ-1,3-bis(2-methyl-1H-imidazol-1-yl)benzene-κ²N³:N³)(μ-naphthalene-2,6-dicarboxylato-κ²O²:O⁶)zinc(II)] dimethylformamide monosolvate], {[Zn(C₁₂H₆O₄)(C₁₄H₁₄N₄)]·C₃H₇NO}_n or {[Zn(1,3-BMIB)(NDC)]·DMF}_n (I), where H₂NDC is naphthalene-2,6-dicarboxylic acid, 1,3-BMIB is 1,3-bis(2-methyl-1H-imidazol-1-yl)benzene and DMF is dimethylformamide, was prepared and characterized through IR spectroscopy, elemental analysis, thermal analysis and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis revealed that (I) exhibits an unusual twofold interpenetrating 2D network. In addition, it displays strong fluorescence emissions and a high photocatalytic activity for the degradation of Rhodamine B (RhB) under UV-light irradiation.

Multi-responsive chemosensing and photocatalytic properties of three luminescent coordination polymers derived from a bifunctional 1,1′-di(4-carbonylphenyl)-2,2′-biimidazoline ligand

Three 3D Zn^II/Cd^II CPs were synthesized to act as multiresponsive luminescent sensors for Fe³⁺, Cr₂O₇²⁻ and NZF antibiotic. The photocatalytic studies indicate that the CPs 1–3 have good photocatalytic capability in degradation of MB.
