A 21st Century View of Allowed and Forbidden Electrocyclic Reactions

In 1965, Woodward and Hoffmann proposed a theory to predict the stereochemistry of electrocyclic reactions, which, after expansion and generalization, became known as the Woodward-Hoffmann Rules. Subsequently, Longuet-Higgins and Abrahamson used correlation diagrams to propose that the stereoselectivity of electrocyclizations could be explained by the correlation of reactant and product orbitals with the same symmetry. Immediately thereafter, Hoffmann and Woodward applied correlation diagrams to explain the mechanism of cycloadditions. We describe these discoveries and their evolution. We now report an investigation of various electrocyclic reactions using DFT and CASSCF. We track the frontier molecular orbitals along the intrinsic reaction coordinate and modeled trajectories and examine the correlation between HOMO and LUMO for thermally forbidden systems. We also investigate the electrocyclizations of several highly polarized systems for which the Houk group had predicted that donor-acceptor substitution can induce zwitterionic character, thereby providing low-energy pathways for formally forbidden reactions. We conclude with perspectives on the field of pericyclic reactions, including a refinement as the meaning of Woodward and Hoffmann's "Violations. There are none!" Lastly, we comment on the burgeoning influence of computations on all fields of chemistry.

Investigation of Ultrafast Configurational Photoisomerization of Bilirubin Using Femtosecond Stimulated Raman Spectroscopy

Phototherapy is an efficient and safe way to reduce high levels of free 4Z,15Z-bilirubin (ZZ-BR) in the serum of newborns. The success of BR phototherapy lies in photoinduced configurational and structural isomerization processes that form excretable isomers. However, the physical picture of photoinduced photoisomerization of ZZ-BR is still unclear. Here, we strategically implement tunable femtosecond stimulated Raman spectroscopy and several time-resolved electronic spectroscopies, assisted by quantum chemical calculations, to dissect the detailed primary configurational isomerization dynamics of free ZZ-BR in organic solvents. The results of this study demonstrate that upon photoexcitation, ultrafast configurational isomerization proceeds by a volume-conserving "hula twist", followed by intramolecular hydrogen-bond distortion and large-scale rotation of the two dipyrrinone halves of the ZZ-BR isomer in a few picoseconds. After that, most of the population recovers back to ZZ-BR, and a very small amount is converted into stable BR isomers via structural isomerization.

From a one-mode to a multi-mode understanding of conical intersection mediated ultrafast organic photochemical reactions

This review discusses how ultrafast organic photochemical reactions are controlled by conical intersections, highlighting that decay to the ground-state at multiple points of the intersection space results in their multi-mode character.

The Mechanics of the Bicycle Pedal Photoisomerization in Crystalline cis,cis-1,4-Diphenyl-1,3-butadiene

Direct irradiation of crystalline cis,cis-1,4-diphenyl-1,3-butadiene (cc-DPB) forms trans,trans-1,4-diphenyl-1,3,-butadiene via a concerted two-bond isomerization called the bicycle pedal (BP) mechanism. However, little is known about photoisomerization pathways in the solid state and there has been much debate surrounding the interpretation of volume-conserving isomerization mechanisms. The bicycle pedal photoisomerization is investigated using the quantum mechanics/molecular mechanics complete active space self-consistent field/Amber force-field method. Important details about how the steric environment influences isomerization mechanisms are revealed including how the one-bond flip and hula-twist mechanisms are suppressed by the crystal cavity, the nature of the seam space in steric environments, and the features of the bicycle pedal mechanism. Specifically, in the bicycle pedal, the phenyl rings of cc-DPB are locked in place and the intermolecular packing allows a passageway for rotation of the central diene in a volume-conserving manner. In contrast, the bicycle pedal rotation in the gas phase is not a stable pathway, so single-bond rotation mechanisms become operative instead. Furthermore, the crystal BP mechanism is an activated process that occurs completely on the excited state; the photoproduct can decay to the ground state through radiative and non-radiative pathways. The present models, however, do not capture the quantitative activation barriers, and more work is needed to better model reactions in crystals. Last, the reaction barriers of the different crystalline conformations within the unit cell of cc-DPB are compared to investigate the possibility for conformation-dependent isomerization. Although some difference in reaction barriers is observed, the difference is most likely not responsible for the experimentally observed periods of fast and slow conversion.

Green light powered molecular state motor enabling eight-shaped unidirectional rotation

Molecular motors convert external energy into directional motions at the nano-scales. To date unidirectional circular rotations and linear motions have been realized but more complex directional trajectories remain unexplored on the molecular level. In this work we present a molecular motor powered by green light allowing to produce an eight-shaped geometry change during its unidirectional rotation around the central molecular axis. Motor motion proceeds in four different steps, which alternate between light powered double bond isomerizations and thermal hula-twist isomerizations. The result is a fixed sequence of populating four different isomers in a fully unidirectional trajectory possessing one crossing point. This motor system opens up unexplored avenues for the construction and mechanisms of molecular machines and will therefore not only significantly expand the toolbox of responsive molecular devices but also enable very different applications in the field of miniaturized technology than currently possible.

Molecular motors have predominantly been limited to circular or linear directional motions. Here, the authors design a molecular motor that moves unidirectionally along a more complex figure-eight trajectory by a distinct four-step mechanism that alternates between photochemical and thermal reaction steps.
