Femtosecond infrared pump-stimulated Raman probe spectroscopy: the first application of the method to studies of vibrational relaxation pathways in the liquid HDO/D2O system

Unified picture of vibrational relaxation of OH stretch at the air/water interface

The elucidation of the energy dissipation process is crucial for understanding various phenomena occurring in nature. Yet, the vibrational relaxation and its timescale at the water interface, where the hydrogen-bonding network is truncated, are not well understood and are still under debate. In the present study, we focus on the OH stretch of interfacial water at the air/water interface and investigate its vibrational relaxation by femtosecond time-resolved, heterodyne-detected vibrational sum-frequency generation (TR-HD-VSFG) spectroscopy. The temporal change of the vibrationally excited hydrogen-bonded (HB) OH stretch band (ν=1→2 transition) is measured, enabling us to determine reliable vibrational relaxation (T1) time. The T1 times obtained with direct excitations of HB OH stretch are 0.2-0.4 ps, which are similar to the T1 time in bulk water and do not noticeably change with the excitation frequency. It suggests that vibrational relaxation of the interfacial HB OH proceeds predominantly with the intramolecular relaxation mechanism as in the case of bulk water. The delayed rise and following decay of the excited-state HB OH band are observed with excitation of free OH stretch, indicating conversion from excited free OH to excited HB OH (~0.9 ps) followed by relaxation to low-frequency vibrations (~0.3 ps). This study provides a complete set of the T1 time of the interfacial OH stretch and presents a unified picture of its vibrational relaxation at the air/water interface.

Engraving of stainless-steel wires to improve optical quality of closed-loop wire-guided flow jet systems for optical and X-ray spectroscopy

This paper describes performance enhancement developments to a closed-loop pump-driven wire-guided flow jet (WGJ) for ultrafast X-ray spectroscopy of liquid samples. Achievements include dramatically improved sample surface quality and reduced equipment footprint from 7 × 20 cm² to 6 × 6 cm², cost, and manufacturing time. Qualitative and quantitative measurements show that micro-scale wire surface modification yields significant improvements to the topography of the sample liquid surface. By manipulating their wettability, it is possible to better control the liquid sheet thickness and to obtain a smooth liquid sample surface, as demonstrated in this work.

Combinational Vibration Modes in H2O/HDO/D2O Mixtures Detected Thanks to the Superior Sensitivity of Femtosecond Stimulated Raman Scattering

Overtones and combinational modes frequently play essential roles in ultrafast vibrational energy relaxation in liquid water. However, these modes are very weak and often overlap with fundamental modes, particularly in isotopologues mixtures. We measured VV and HV Raman spectra of H₂O and D₂O mixtures with femtosecond stimulated Raman scattering (FSRS) and compared the results with calculated spectra. Specifically, we observed the mode at around 1850 cm^-1 and assigned it to H-O-D bend + rocking libration. Second, we found that the H-O-D bend overtone band and the OD stretch + rocking libration combination band contribute to the band located between 2850 and 3050 cm^-1. Furthermore, we assigned the broad band located between 4000 and 4200 cm^-1 to be composed of combinational modes of high-frequency OH stretching modes with predominantly twisting and rocking librations. These results should help in a proper interpretation of Raman spectra of aqueous systems as well as in the identification of vibrational relaxation pathways in isotopically diluted water.

First events in the coil-to-globule transition of PVME in water: An ultrafast temperature jump - time-resolved elastic light scattering study

HYPOTHESIS

The coil-to-globule transition is an essential phenomenon in protein and polymer solutions. Late stages of such transitions, >1 µs, have been thoroughly studied. Yet, the initial ones are a matter of speculations. Here, we present the first observation of a sub-nanosecond stage of the coil-to-globule transition of poly (vinyl methyl ether), PVME, in water.

EXPERIMENTS

The detection of an early stage of the coil-to-globule transition has been possible thanks to a novel experimental approach - time-resolved elastic light scattering study, following an ultrafast temperature jump. We identified a molecular process active in the observed stage of the transition with use of broadband dielectric spectroscopy.

FINDINGS

In the experiment's time window, from a few ps to around 600 ps, we observed an increase in the light scattering intensity 300-400 ps after the temperature jump that heated the sample above its lower critical solution temperature (LCST). The observed time coincides with the time of segmental relaxation of PVME, determined by broadband dielectric spectroscopy in the temperature range of the LCST of the PVME/water mixture. This coincidence strongly suggests that the observed herein stage of coil-to-globule transition is the rapid formation of local nuclei along the polymer chain. Those nuclei may grow and aggregate in later stages of the process, which are out of our experimental time window.

Spontaneous versus Stimulated Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering of Liquid Water

We have observed for the first time the surface-enhanced (SE) signal of water in an aqueous dispersion of silver nanoparticles in spontaneous (SERS) and femtosecond stimulated Raman (SE-FSRS) processes with different wavelengths of the Raman pump (515, 715, and 755 nm). By estimating the fraction of water molecules that interact with the metal surface, we have calculated enhancement factors (EF): 4.8 × 10⁶ for SERS and (3.6-3.7) × 10⁶ for SE-FSRS. Furthermore, we have tested the role of simultaneous plasmon resonance and Raman resonance conditions for the aν ₁ + bν₃ overtone mode of water (755 nm) in SE-FSRS signal amplification. When the wavelength of the Raman pump is within the plasmon resonance of the metal nanoparticles, the Raman resonance has a negligible effect on the EF. However, the Raman resonance with the aν ₁ + bν₃ mode strongly enhances the signal of the fundamental OH stretching mode of water.

Structural evolution of water and hydroxyl groups during thermal, mechanical and chemical treatment of high purity natural quartz

Fused silica crucibles are commonly used in the fabrication process of solar grade silicon ingots. These crucibles are manufactured from high purity natural quartz sand and as a consequence, their properties are influenced by the presence of water and hydroxyls in the raw quartz. In this work, diffuse reflectance IR, ¹H magic angle spinning NMR, and Raman spectroscopy were used to investigate the influence of thermal treatment on water and hydroxyl groups in high purity natural quartz sand. Most of the water in dry sand is present in the form of closed inclusions within the quartz grains which were detected in Raman imaging studies, even after thermally treating the samples at 600 °C. Only after heating to 900 °C did this water completely vanish, most likely as a result of rupturing of the inclusions. However, newly formed OH groups, identified as isolated and hydrogen bound OH were observed as products of the reaction between water and quartz. Similarly, liquid water was observed in NMR spectra even after treatment at 600 °C while at temperatures >900 °C, only non-interacting silanol groups were present. The comparison of the temperature dependence of the IR and NMR spectra also yields insight into the assignment of the OH stretching mode region of the IR spectrum in this system. The intensity of water related bands decreases while the intensity of OH bands first increases and then decreases with increasing temperature. The band intensity of Al-rich defects as well as the characteristic feature at 3200 cm⁻¹ does not follow the temperature dependence of typical water peaks. It is also shown that leaching the quartz sand in HF solution helps to remove water from inclusions, likely by forming pathways for fluid flow inside the quartz grains. Milling of the samples caused formation of an additional type of hydroxyl group, possibly due to partial amorphisation of the surfaces of the quartz grains surface during the process. The results improve the basis for a knowledge-based processes development for the processing of high purity natural quartz.

In dry quartz stable closed liquid micron-size inclusions and newly formed OH groups were observed after thermal treatment.

Discovering a rotational barrier within a charge-transfer state of a photoexcited chromophore in solution

Methylation occurs in a myriad of systems with protective and regulatory functions. 8-methoxypyrene-1,3,6-trisulfonate (MPTS), a methoxy derivative of a photoacid, serves as a model system to study effects of methylation on the excited state potential energy landscape. A suite of spectroscopic techniques including transient absorption, wavelength-tunable femtosecond stimulated Raman spectroscopy (FSRS), and fluorescence quantum yield measurements via steady-state electronic spectroscopy reveal the energy dissipation pathways of MPTS following photoexcitation. Various solvents enable a systematic characterization of the H-bonding interaction, viscosity, and dynamic solvation that influence the ensuing relaxation pathways. The formation of a charge-transfer state out of the Franck-Condon region occurs on the femtosecond-to-picosecond solvation timescale before encountering a rotational barrier. The rotational relaxation correlates with the H-bond donating strength of solvent, while the rotational time constant lengthens as solvent viscosity increases. Time-resolved excited-state FSRS, aided by quantum calculations, provides crucial structural dynamics knowledge and reveals the sulfonate groups playing a dominant role during solvation. Several prominent vibrational motions of the pyrene ring backbone help maneuver the population toward the more fluorescent state. These ultrafast correlated electronic and nuclear motions ultimately govern the fate of the photoexcited chromophore in solution. Overall, MPTS in water displays the highest probability to fluoresce, while the aprotic and more viscous dimethyl sulfoxide enhances the nonradiative pathways. These mechanistic insights may apply robustly to other photoexcited chromophores that do not undergo excited-state proton transfer or remain trapped in a broad electronic state and also provide design principles to control molecular optical responses with site-specific atomic substitution.
