Weak-field coherent control of photodissociation in polyatomic molecules

Unveiling Ultrafast-Weak-Field Coherent Control of Indirect Dissociation Reactions

Coherent control of molecular photodissociation through one-photon transitions has become a topic of interest in physical chemistry. Previous studies have shown that modulating the spectral phase of a single ultrafast laser pulse while keeping its spectral amplitude constant does not affect the dissociation yield of reactions originating from a pure eigenstate of the ground electronic state. Here, we explore the indirect photodissociation reaction of NaI molecules using theoretical and numerical methods. Our findings show that, in contrast to the outcomes achieved with negatively chirped pulses, time-dependent population of the eigenstates of the excited adiabatic potential induced by positively chirped laser pulses, acting as intermediates in the reaction, cannot be periodically restored to that caused by the unchirped pulse. This gives rise to an intriguing phenomenon: the sign of the pulse's chirp rate influences the distribution of dissociation fragments in coordinate and momentum space over extended periods. This work highlights the potential of using spectral-phase modulated pulses to manipulate indirect photodissociation reactions, offering a way to modify the transient photofragment distributions by controlling reaction intermediates.

Optimal control of N-H photodissociation of pyridinyl

The N-H photodissociation dynamics of the pyridinyl radical upon continuous excitation to the optically bright, first excited ππ* electronic state by an ultra-violet (UV) laser pulse has been investigated within the mathematical framework of optimal control theory. The genetic algorithm (GA) is employed as the optimization protocol. We considered a three-state and three-mode model Hamiltonian, which includes the reaction coordinate, R (a1 symmetry); the coupling coordinates (namely, out-of-plane bending coordinate of the hydrogen atom of azine group), Θ (b1 symmetry); and the wagging mode, Q9 (a2 symmetry). The three electronic states are the ground, ππ*, and πσ* states. The πσ* state crosses both the ground state and the ππ* state, and it is a repulsive state on which N-H dissociation occurs upon photoexcitation. Different vibrational wave functions along the coupling coordinates, Θ and Q9, of the ground electronic state are used as the initial condition for solving the time-dependent Schrödinger equation. The optimal UV laser pulse is designed by applying the GA, which maximizes the dissociation yield. We obtained over 95% dissociation yield through the πσ* asymptote using the optimal pulse of a time duration of ∼30 000 a.u. (∼725.66 fs).

Unveiling Coherent Control of Halomethane Dissociation Induced by a Single Strong Ultraviolet Pulse

We present a theoretical investigation into the coherent control of photodissociation reactions in halomethanes, specifically focusing on CH2BrCl by manipulating the spectral phase of a single femtosecond laser pulse. We examine the photodissociation of CH2BrCl under an ultrashort pulse with a quadratic spectral phase and reveal the sensitivity of both the total dissociation probability and the resulting radical products (Br+CH2Cl and Cl+CH2Br) to chirp rates. To gain insights into the underlying mechanism, we calculate the population distributions of excited vibrational states in the ground electronic state, demonstrating the occurrence of resonance Raman scattering (RRS) in the strong-field limit regime. By utilizing chirped pulses, we show that this RRS phenomenon can be suppressed and even eliminated through quantum destructive interference. This highlights the high sensitivity of photodissociation into Cl+CH2Br to the spectral phase, showcasing a phenomenon that goes beyond the traditional one-photon photodissociation of isolated molecules in the weak-field limit regime. These findings emphasize the importance of coherent control in the exploration and utilization of photodissociation in polyatomic molecules, paving the way for new advancements in chemical physics and femtochemistry.

Protonation state control of electric field induced molecular switching mechanisms

Scanning tunneling microscopy tip-induced deprotonation has been demonstrated experimentally and can be used as an additional control mechanism in electric-field induced molecular switching. The goal of the current work is to establish whether (de)protonation can be used to inhibit or enhance the electric field controlled thermal and photoisomerization processes. Dihydroxyazobenzene is used as a model system, where protonation/deprotonation of the free hydroxyl moiety changes the azo bond order, and so modifies the rate of electric field induced isomerization. Through the combined action of deprotonation and applied field, it was found that the cis-to-trans thermal isomerization barrier could be completely removed, changing the isomerization half-life from the order of several months. In addition, due to the presence of multiple isomerization mechanisms, electric fields could modify the isomerization kinetics by increasing the number of energetically viable isomerization pathways, rather than reducing the activation barrier of the lowest energy pathway. Excited state calculations indicated that the protonation state and electric field could be used together to control the presence of electronic degeneracies along the rotation pathway between S₀/S₁, and along all three pathways between S₁/S₂. This work provides insight into the mechanisms that enable the use of protonation state, light, and electric fields in concert to control molecular switches.

Interference of a resonance state with itself: a route to control its dynamical behaviour

It is demonstrated both numerically and mathematically that the dynamical behavior of an isolated resonance state, which comprises the resonance decay lifetime and the asymptotic fragment state distribution produced upon resonance decay, can be extensively controlled by means of quantum interference induced by a laser field in the weak-field regime. The control scheme applied is designed to induce interference between amplitudes excited at two different energies of the resonance line shape, namely the resonance energy and an additional energy. This scheme exploits the resonance property of possessing a nonzero energy width, which makes it possible that a resonance state may interfere with itself, and thus allows interference between the amplitudes excited at the two energies of the resonance width. The application of this scheme opens the possibility of a universal control of both the duration and the fragment product distribution outcome of any resonance-mediated molecular process.

Effect of Oriented External Electric Fields on the Photo and Thermal Isomerization of Azobenzene

Azobenzene is a prototype molecule with potential applications in molecular switches, solar thermal batteries, sensors, photoresponsive membranes, molecular electronics, data storage, and nonlinear optics. Photo and thermal isomerization pathways exhibit different charge-transfer character and dipole moments, implying that the use of electric fields can be used to modulate the reactivity of azobenzene. This article examines the differential effect of orientated electric fields on the rotation and inversion thermal and photoisomerization pathways of azobenzene to explore the feasibility of using electric fields in the design of azobenzene-based molecular devices. Our findings demonstrate that the application of orientated electric fields modifies the accessibility of the S₀/S₁ seam of electronic degeneracy, as well as changes the energetically favored relaxation pathway in the branching space to yield different photoproducts. In addition, we observed strong-field dipole-inversion effects that cause a topographical change in the response of the potential energy surface to the applied field and can result in geometric minima that do not exist under field-free conditions. On the S₀ surface, transition barriers can be modified on the order of ±10 kcal mol^-1, enabling control of thermal isomerization rates.

Controlled intramolecular H-transfer in malonaldehyde in the electronic ground state mediated through the conical intersection of 1nπ* and 1ππ* excited electronic states

We report photo-isomerization of malonaldehyde in its electronic ground state (S0), mediated by coupled 1nπ*(S1)-1ππ*(S2) excited electronic states, accomplished with the aid of optimally designed ultraviolet (UV)-laser pulses. In particular, control of H-transfer from a configuration predominantly located in the left well (say, reactant) to that in the right well (say, product) of the electronic ground S0 potential energy surface is achieved by a pump-dump mechanism including the nonadiabatic interactions between the excited S1 and S2 states. An interplay between the nonadiabatic coupling due to the conical intersection of the S1 and S2 states and the laser-molecule interaction is found to be imprinted in the time-dependent electronic population. The latter is also examined by employing optimal fields of varying intensities and frequencies of the UV laser pulses. For the purpose of the present study, we constructed a three-state and two-mode coupled diabatic Hamiltonian with the help of adiabatic electronic energies and transition dipole moments calculated by ab initio quantum chemistry methods. The electronic diabatic model is developed using the calculated adiabatic energies of the two excited electronic states (S1 and S2) in order to carry out the dynamics study. The optimal fields for achieving the controlled isomerization are designed within the framework of optimal control theory employing the optimization technique of a multitarget functional using the genetic algorithm. The laser-driven dynamics of the system is treated by numerically solving the time-dependent Schrödinger equation within the dipole approximation. A time-averaged yield of the target product of ∼40% is achieved in the present treatment of dynamics with optimal laser pulses.
