Cavitation Damage Prediction in Mercury Target for Pulsed Spallation Neutron Source Using Monte Carlo Simulation

Cavitation damage on a mercury target vessel for a pulsed spallation neutron source is induced by a proton beam injection in mercury. Cavitation damage is one of factors affecting the allowable beam power and the life time of a mercury target vessel. The prediction method of the cavitation damage using Monte Carlo simulations was proposed taking into account the uncertainties of the core position of cavitation bubbles and impact pressure distributions. The distribution of impact pressure attributed to individual cavitation bubble collapsing was assumed to be Gaussian distribution and the probability distribution of the maximum value of impact pressures was assumed to be three kinds of distributions: the delta function and Gaussian and Weibull distributions. Two parameters in equations describing the distribution of impact pressure were estimated using Bayesian optimization by comparing the distribution of the cavitation damage obtained from the experiment with the distribution of the accumulated plastic strain obtained from the simulation. Regardless of the distribution type, the estimated maximum impact pressure was 1.2-2.9 GPa and existed in the range of values predicted by the ratio of the diameter and depth of the pit. The estimated dispersion of the impact pressure distribution was 1.0-1.7 μm and corresponded to the diameter of major pits. In the distribution of the pits described by the accumulated plastic strain, which was assumed in three cases, the delta function and Gaussian and Weibull distributions, the Weibull distribution agreed well with the experimental results, particularly including relatively large pit size. Furthermore, the Weibull distribution reproduced the depth profile, i.e., pit shape, better than that using the delta function or Gaussian distribution. It can be said that the cavitation erosion phenomenon is predictable by adopting the Weibull distribution. This prediction method is expected to be applied to predict the cavitation damage in fluid equipment such as pumps and fluid parts.

Analysis of the Diffusion in a Multilayer Structure under a Constant Heating Rate: The Calculation of Activation Energy from the In Situ Neutron Reflectometry Measurement

Understanding mass transport in micro- and nanostructures is of paramount importance in improving the performance and reliability of the micro- and nanostructures. In this work, we solve the diffusion problem in a multilayer structure with periodic conditions under a constant heating rate via a Fourier series. Analytical relation is established between the coefficients of eigenfunctions and the intensity of X-ray or neutron Bragg peak. The logarithm of temporal variation of the intensity of X-ray or neutron Bragg peak is a linear function of the nominal diffusion time, with the nominal diffusion time being dependent on the heating rate. This linear relation is validated by experimental data. The Taylor series expansion of the linear relation to the first order of the diffusion time yields an approximately linear relation between the logarithm of temporal variation of the intensity of X-ray or neutron peak and the diffusion time for small diffusion times, which can be likely used to calculate the activation energy for the diffusion in a multilayer structure. The validation of such an approach is subjected to the fact that the characteristic time for heat conduction is much less than the characteristic time for the ramp heating as well as the characteristic time for diffusion.

Electrochemical investigation of ion-beam sputter-deposited carbon thin films for Li-ion batteries

Abstract

The C-rate capability of 230 nm- and 16 nm-thin ion-beam sputter-deposited amorphous carbon films, an interesting class of carbonaceous material for lithium-ion batteries, was investigated up to Li-platting. Stepwise ascending and descending constant Li+ currents after each fifth cycle, followed by hundreds of cycles with the highest current were applied. The carbon films show similar cycling with irreversible losses during the first five cycles, followed by reversible cycling with a capacity close to that of graphite. The capacity is significantly lower at high currents; however, it is restored for subsequent cycling again at low currents. Differential charge and differential capacity curves reveal three Li+ uptake and three Li+ release peaks located between 0 and 3 V. Irreversible as well as reversible Li bonding can be associated with all these peaks. Irreversibly bonded Li can be found at the surface (solid electrolyte interphase) and in the bulk of the carbon films (Li trapping). Reversible Li bonding might be possible inside the carbon films in graphite-like nano-domains and at defects. The thinner film reveals a more pseudo-capacitive cycling behavior, pointing to enhanced Li kinetics.

Recent Developments of Nanomaterials and Nanostructures for High-Rate Lithium Ion Batteries

Lithium ion batteries have been considered as a promising energy-storage solution, the performance of which depends on the electrochemical properties of each component, including cathode, anode, electrolyte and separator. Currently, fast charging is becoming an attractive research field due to the widespread application of batteries in electric vehicles, which are designated to replace conventional diesel automobiles in the future. In these batteries, rate capability, which is closely linked to the topology and morphology of electrode materials, is one of the determining parameters of interest. It has been revealed that nanotechnology is an exceptional tool in designing and preparing cathodes and anodes with outstanding electrochemical kinetics due to the well-known nanosizing effect. Nevertheless, the negative effects of applying nanomaterials in electrodes sometimes outweigh the benefits. To better understand the exact function of nanostructures in solid-state electrodes, herein, a comprehensive review is provided beginning with the fundamental theory of lithium ion transport in solids, which is then followed by a detailed analysis of several major factors affecting the migration of lithium ions in solid-state electrodes. The latest developments in characterisation techniques, based on either electrochemical or radiology methodologies, are covered as well. In addition, state-of-the-art research findings are provided to illustrate the effect of nanomaterials and nanostructures in promoting the rate performance of lithium ion batteries. Finally, several challenges and shortcomings of applying nanotechnology in fabricating high-rate lithium ion batteries are summarised.
