Single Calcite Particle Dissolution Kinetics: Revealing the Influence of Mass Transport

Calcite dissolution kinetics at the single particle scale are determined. It is demonstrated that at high undersaturation and in the absence of inhibitors the particulate mineral dissolution rate is controlled by a saturated calcite surface in local equilibrium with dissolved Ca²⁺ and CO₃ ^2- coupled with rate determining diffusive transport of the ions away from the surface. Previous work is revisited and inconsistencies arising from the assumption of a surface-controlled reaction are highlighted. The data have implications for ocean modeling of climate change.

Voltammetry in sheep's blood: Membrane-free amperometric measurement of O2 concentration

An amperometric method was applied for the electroanalytical measurement of oxygen content in sheep's blood. This method was based on a bare platinum microdisc electrode coupled with the use of chronoamperometry. A linear relationship between the chronoamperometric current and the oxygen concentration was observed in both saline solution and sheep's blood. The developed method was able to measure the oxygen percentage with an error of ca. 1.3% in sheep's blood. In addition, this article presents the first study on direct voltammetry in sheep's blood and a dissociative CE process was proposed to explain the electrochemical behaviour of oxygen reduction in blood on a platinum electrode in which the 'free' oxygen was first dissociated from oxyhaemoglobin prior to electron transfer with the magnitude of the observed current controlled by the diffusion of oxyhaemoglobin to the electrode where for sufficiently large electrodes (greater than ca. 1 μm in radius) the dissociation proceeds to completion on the voltammetric timescale allowing quantitative measurements.

Hot-SWV: Square Wave Voltammetry with Hot Microelectrodes

A promising strategy to lowering detection limits in electrochemical analysis is the active modulation of the electrode temperature. Specifically, by tuning the electrode's surface temperature one can enhance detection limits due to improved electrode process kinetics and increased mass transfer rates, all without affecting the bulk solution. Motivated by this argument, here we report the development of a new electroanalytical technique based on electrode-temperature modulation, which we call hot square wave voltammetry (Hot-SWV). The technique utilizes the superposition of conventional SWV, already considered as one of the most sensitive voltammetric techniques, and a high frequency alternating current (ac) waveform to electrically polarize microelectrodes. By applying about 100 MHz ac frequencies (with varying V_rms amplitudes), our method generates an electrothermal fluid flow (ETF) in the electrolyte surrounding the electrode, thereby increasing the sensitivity of the SWV-based detection. We demonstrate this by investigating the oxidation of ferrocyanide and iron(II) ions, as well as the reduction of the coordination compound ruthenium(III) hexamine under various experimental conditions. We validate our experimental results against a theoretical model built using finite element analysis and observe agreement within ≤15% error at temperatures ≤39 °C. Using Hot-SWV, we observe at least one-order-of-magnitude improvement in the limit of detection of ferrocyanide ions relative to conventional, mm-size electrodes at 25 °C. In addition, we anticipate that Hot-SWV will be particularly useful for electroanalytical measurements of ultralow (≤pM) concentrations of analytes in environmental and biomedical applications.
