Can the solvent enhance the rate of chemical reactions through C-H/π interactions? insights from theory

Boryl-substituted low-valent heavy group 14 compounds

Low valent group 14 compounds exhibit diverse structures and reactivities. The employment of diazaborolyl anions (NHB anions), isoelectronic analogues to N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs), in group 14 chemistry leads to the exceptional structures and reactivity. The unique combination of σ-electron donation and pronounced steric hindrance impart distinct structural characteristics to the NHB-substituted low valent group 14 compounds. Notably, the modulation of the HOMO-LUMO gap in these compounds with the diazaborolyl substituents results in novel reaction patterns in the activation of small molecules and inert chemical bonds. This review mainly summarizes the recent advances in NHB-substituted low-valent heavy Group 14 compounds, emphasizing their synthesis, structural characteristics and application to small molecule activation.

Reactions of a diborylstannylene with CO2 and N2O: diboration of carbon dioxide by a main group bis(boryl) complex

The reactions of the boryl-substituted stannylene Sn{B(NDippCH)2}2 (1) with carbon dioxide have been investigated and shown to proceed via pathways involving insertion into the Sn-B bond(s). In the first instance this leads to formation of the (boryl)tin(ii) borylcarboxylate complex Sn{B(NDippCH)2}{O2CB(NDippCH)2} (2), which has been structurally characterized and shown to feature a κ2 mode of coordination of the [(HCDippN)2BCO2]- ligand at the metal centre. 2 undergoes B-O reductive elimination in hexane solution (in the absence of further CO2) to give the boryl(borylcarboxylate)ester {(HCDippN)2B}O2C{B(NDippCH)2} (3) i.e. the product of formal diboration of carbon dioxide. Alternatively, 2 can assimilate a second equivalent of CO2 to give the homoleptic bis(borylcarboxylate) Sn{O2CB(NDippCH)2}2 (4), which can be prepared via an alternative route from SnBr2 and the potassium salt of [(HCDippN)2BCO2]-, and structurally characterized as its DMAP (N,N-dimethylaminopyridine) adduct. Structural and reactivity studies also point to the possibility for extrusion of CO from the [(HCDippN)2BCO2]- fragment to generate the boryloxy system [(HCDippN)2BO]-, a ligand which can be generated directly from 1via reaction with N2O. The initially formed unsymmetrical species Sn{B(NDippCH)2}{OB(NDippCH)2} has been shown to be amenable to crystallographic study in the solid state, but to undergo ligand redistribution in solution to generate a mixture of 1 and the bis(boryloxy) complex Sn{OB(NDippCH)2}2.

Alcohols as Fluoroalkyl Synthons: Ni-catalyzed Dehydrogenative Approach to Access Polyfluoroalkyl Bis-indoles

An acceptorless dehydrogenative strategy for the synthesis of polyfluoroalkylated bis-indoles is described by employing an earth-abundant nickel-based catalytic system under air. The notable feature of the present transformation is the use of bench stable and easily affordable polyfluorinated alcohols without any pre-functionalization for the introduction of precious polyfluoroalkyl groups. The developed straightforward protocol accomplished biologically relevant fluoroalkyl bis-indoles in a sustainable fashion. Extensive DFT study predicts the unique role of indole molecules which stabilizes the transition states during the dehydrogenation process of polyfluorinated alcohols, presumably through non-covalent π⋅⋅⋅π and H-bonding interactions.

The Effect of Solvent-Substrate Noncovalent Interactions on the Diastereoselectivity in the Intramolecular Carbonyl-Ene and the Staudinger [2 + 2] Cycloaddition Reactions

Noncovalent interactions (NCIs) have been identified as important contributing factors for determining selectivity in organic transformations. However, cases where NCIs between solvents and substrates are responsible for a major extent for determining selectivity are rare. The current computational study with density functional theory identifies two important transformations where this is the case: the intramolecular carbonyl-ene reaction and the Staudinger [2 + 2] cycloaddition reaction. In both cases, the role of explicit solvent molecules interacting noncovalently with the substrate has been taken into account. Calculations indicate that the diastereomeric ratio would be 95.0:5.0 for the formation of tricyclic tetrahydrofuran diastereomers via the intramolecular carbonyl-ene reaction and 94.0:6.0 for the formation of the triflone diastereomers via the Staudinger [2 + 2] cycloaddition reaction, which corroborates with the experiment. Interestingly, in both the cases, the calculations indicate that noninclusion of explicit solvent molecules would lead to only a small difference between the competing transition states, which leads to the conclusion that solvent-substrate NCIs are the major cause for diastereoselectivity in both the cases considered.

Probing cooperativity in C-H⋯N and C-H⋯π interactions: Dissociation energies of aniline⋯(CH4)n (n = 1, 2) van der Waals complexes from resonant ionization and velocity mapped ion imaging measurements

Recent studies of the weakly bound anisole⋯CH₄ complex found a dual mode of binding, featuring both C/H⋯π and C/H⋯O noncovalent interactions. In this work, we examine the dissociation energies of related aniline⋯(CH₄)_n (n = 1, 2) van der Waals clusters, where both C/H⋯π and C/H⋯N interactions are possible. Using a combination of theory and experiments that include mass-selected two-color resonant two-photon ionization spectroscopy, two-color appearance potential (2CAP) measurements, and velocity-mapped ion imaging (VMI), we derive the dissociation energies of both complexes in the ground (S₀), excited (S₁), and cation radical (D₀) states. As the amide group is non-planar in the ground state, the optimized ground state geometry of the aniline⋯CH₄ 1:1 complex shows two isomers, each with the methane positioned above the aniline ring. The observed redshift of the electronic origin from the aniline monomer is consistent with TDDFT calculations for the more stable isomer, where the methane sits on the same face as the amino hydrogens. The dissociation energies of the 1:1 complex, obtained from 2CAP measurements, are in good agreement with the calculated theoretical values from selected density functional theory methods. VMI data for the 1:1 complex gave a binding energy value overestimated by ∼179 cm^-1 when compared to the 2CAP results, indicating that dissociative ionization selectively populates an excited vibrational level of the aniline cation radical. Given that the electron donating ability of aromatic substituents trends as -NH₂ > -OCH₃ > -CH₃, it is noteworthy that the strength of methane binding also trends in this order, as found by experiment (dissociation energies in kJ/mol: 6.6 > 5.8 > 4.5) and predicted by theory (PBE0-D3/def2-QZVPPD, in kJ/mol: 6.9 > 6.0 > 5.0). For the 1:2 complex of aniline and methane, calculations predict that the more stable conformer is the one where the two methane molecules lie on opposite faces of the ring, consistent with the observed redshift of the electronic origin. Unlike the anisole-methane 1:2 complex, which shows an enhanced dissociation energy for the loss of one methane in comparison with the 1:1 complex, here, we find that the energy required to remove one methane from the ground state aniline-methane 1:2 complex is smaller than that of the 1:1 complex, consistent with theoretical expectations.
