Encapsulation of charged halogens by the 512 water cage

This study focuses on the encapsulation of the entire series of halides by the 512 cage of twenty water molecules and on the characterization of water to water and water to anion interactions. State-of-the-art computations are used to determine equilibrium geometries, energy related quantities, and thermal stability towards dissociation and to dissect the nature and strength of intermolecular interactions holding the clusters as stable units. Two types of structures are revealed: heavily deformed cages for F- indicating a preference for microsolvation, and slightly deformed cages for the remaining anions indicating a preference for encapsulation. The primary variable dictating the properties of the clusters is the charge density of the central halide, with the most severe effects observed for the F- case. For the remaining halides, the anion may be safely viewed as a sort of "big electron" with little local disruptive power, enough to affect the network of non-covalent hydrogen bonds in the cage, but not enough to break it. Gibbs energies for dissociation either into cavity and halide or into water molecules and halide suggest that, in a similar way as to methane clathrate, a more weakly bonded complex that has been detected in the gas phase, all halide containing clathrate-like structures should be amenable to experimental detection in the gas phase at moderate temperature and pressure conditions.

A nuclear configuration interaction approach to study nuclear spin effects: an application to ortho- and para-3 He2 @C60

We introduce a non-orthogonal configuration interaction approach to investigate nuclear quantum effects on energies and densities of confined fermionic nuclei. The Hamiltonian employed draws parallels between confined systems and many-electron atoms, where effective non-Coulombic potentials represent the interactions of the trapped particles. One advantage of this method is its generality, as it offers the potential to study the nuclear quantum effects of various confined species affected by effective isotropic or anisotropic potentials. As a first application, we analyze the quantum states of two 3 He atoms encapsulated in C60 . At the Hartree-Fock level, we observe the breaking of spin and spatial symmetries. To ensure wavefunctions with the correct symmetries, we mix the broken-symmetry Hartree-Fock states within the non-orthogonal configuration interaction expansion. Our proposed approach predicts singly and triply degenerate ground states for the singlet (para-3 He2 @C60 ) and triplet (ortho-3 He2 @C60 ) nuclear spin configurations, respectively. The ortho-3 He2 @C60 ground state is 5.69 cm-1 higher in energy than the para-3 He2 @C60 ground state. The nuclear densities obtained for these states exhibit the icosahedral symmetry of the C60 embedding potential. Importantly, our calculated energies for the lowest 85 states are in close agreement with perturbation theory results based on a harmonic oscillator plus rigid rotor model of 3 He2 @C60 .

An off-center endohedrally confined hydrogen molecule

In this study, we address the problem of a C₆₀ endohedrally confined hydrogen molecule through a configuration-interaction approach to electronic dynamics. Modeling the confinement by means of a combination of two Woods-Saxon potentials, we analyze the stability of the system as a function of the nuclei position through the behavior of the electronic spectrum. After studying the convergence of two different partial wave expansions, one related to the molecular Coulomb centers and the other related to the off-centering of the C₆₀ well, we found that the second approach provides a more accurate description of the system. Furthermore, we observed that the inter-atomic distance changes based on the position of the atoms inside the cavity. Thus, to obtain the most favourable energetic configuration for the molecule, it should be positioned inside the cavity next to the structure, where its size decreases.

In silico capture of noble gas atoms with a light atom molecule

Noble gas atoms (Ng = He, Ne, Ar, and Kr) can be captured in silico with a light atom molecule containing only C, H, Si, O, and B atoms. Extensive density functional theory (DFT) calculations on series of peri-substituted scaffolds indicate that confined spaces (voids) capable to energy efficiently encapsulate and bind Ng atoms are accessible by design of a tripodal peri-substituted ligand, namely, [(5-Ph₂B-xan-4-)₃Si]H (xan = xanthene) comprising (after hydride abstraction) four Lewis acidic sites within the cationic structure [(5-Ph₂B-xan-4-)₃Si]⁺. The host (ligand system) thereby provides an adoptive environment for the guest (Ng atom) to accommodate for its particular size. Whereas considerable chemical interactions are detectable between the ligand system and the heavier Ng atoms Kr and Ar in the host guest complex [(5-Ph₂B-xan-4-)₃Si·Ng]⁺, the lighter Ng atoms Ne and He are rather tolerated by the ligand system instead of being chemically bound to it, nicely highlighting the gradual onset of (weak) chemical bonding along the series He to Kr. A variety of real-space bonding indicators (RSBIs) derived from the calculated electron and pair densities provides valuable insight to the situation of an "isolated atom in a molecule" in case of He, uncovering its size and shape, whereas minute charge rearrangements caused by polarization of the outer electron shell of the larger Ng atoms results in formation of polarized interactions for Ar and Kr with non-negligible covalent bond contributions for Kr. The present study shows that noble gas atoms can be trapped by small light-atom molecules without the forceful conditions necessary using cage structures such as fullerenes, boranes and related compounds or by using super-electrophilic sites like [B₁₂(CN)₁₁]^- if the chelating effect of several Lewis acidic sites within one molecule is employed.

Noble gas endohedral fullerenes

This review focuses on the available experimental and theoretical investigations on noble gas (Ng) endohedral fullerenes, addressing essential questions related to the mutual effects that confinement of one or more Ng atoms induces on the electronic structure, bonding, and different properties of fullerenes. It also summarizes the different contributions to the mechanisms of formation and decomplexation, the reactivity towards Diels-Alder cycloaddition reactions, the chemical bonding situation of Ng endohedral fullerenes, and the interactions that dominate within these systems.

Changes in Structure and Reactivity of Ng2 Encapsulated in Fullerenes: A Density Functional Theory Study

Noble gas can be no noble in certain situations from the perspective of structure, bonding, and reactivity. These situations could be extreme experimental conditions or others. In this contribution, we systematically investigate the impact of fullerene encapsulation on molecular structure and chemical reactivity of noble gas dimers (Ng2) in a few fullerene molecules. To that end, we consider He2, Ne2, and Ar2 dimers encapsulated in C50, C60, and C70 fullerenes. We unveil that bond distances of Ng2 inside fullerene become substantially smaller and noble gas atoms become more electrophilic. In return, these noble gas dimers make fullerene molecules more nucleophilic. Using analytical tools from density functional theory, conceptual density functional theory, and information-theoretic approach, we appreciate the nature and origin of these structure and reactivity changes. The results and conclusions from this work should provide more new insights from the viewpoint of changing the perspectives of noble gas reactivity.
