Laplacian free and asymptotic corrected semilocal exchange potential applied to the band gap of solids

Implementation and First Evaluation of Strong-Correlation-Corrected Local Hybrid Functionals for the Calculation of NMR Shieldings and Shifts

Local hybrid functionals containing strong-correlation factors (scLHs) and range-separated local hybrids (RSLHs) have been integrated into an efficient coupled-perturbed Kohn-Sham implementation for the calculation of nuclear shielding constants. Several scLHs and the ωLH22t RSLH have then been evaluated for the first time for the extended NS372 benchmark set of main-group shieldings and shifts and the TM70 benchmark of 3d transition-metal shifts. The effects of the strong-correlation corrections have been analyzed with respect to the spatial distribution of the sc-factors, which locally diminish exact-exchange admixture at certain regions in a molecule. The scLH22t, scLH23t-mBR, and scLH23t-mBR-P functionals, which contain a "damped" strong-correlation factor to retain the excellent performance of the underlying LH20t functional for weakly correlated situations, tend to make smaller corrections to shieldings and shifts than the "undamped" scLH22ta functional. While the latter functional can also deteriorate agreement with the reference data in certain weakly correlated cases, it provides overall better performance, in particular for systems where static correlation is appreciable. This pertains only to a minority of systems in the NS372 main-group test set but to many more systems in the TM70 transition-metal test set, in particular for high-oxidation-state complexes, e.g., Cr(+VI) complexes and other systems with stretched bonds. Another undamped scLH, the simpler LDA-based scLH21ct-SVWN-m, also tends to provide significant improvements in many cases. The differences between the functionals and species can be rationalized on the basis of one-dimensional plots of the strong-correlation factors, augmented by isosurface plots of the fractional orbital density (FOD). Position-dependent exact-exchange admixture is thus shown to provide substantial flexibility in treating response properties like NMR shifts for both weakly and strongly correlated systems.

Range-Separated Local Hybrid Functionals with Small Fractional-Charge and Fractional-Spin Errors: Escaping the Zero-Sum Game of DFT Functionals

Extending recent developments on strong-correlation (sc) corrections to local hybrid functionals to the recent accurate ωLH22t range-separated local hybrid, a series of highly flexible strong-correlation-corrected range-separated local hybrids (scRSLHs) has been constructed and evaluated. This has required the position-dependent reduction of both short- and long-range exact-exchange admixtures in regions of space characterized by strong static correlations. Using damping procedures provides scRSLHs that retain largely the excellent performance of ωLH22t for weakly correlated situations and, in particular, for accurate quasiparticle energies of a wide variety of systems while reducing dramatically static-correlation errors, e.g., in stretched-bond situations. An additional correction to the local mixing function to reduce delocalization errors in abnormal open-shell situations provides further improvements in thermochemical and kinetic parameters, making scRSLH functionals such as ωLH23tdE or ωLH23tdP promising tools for complex molecular or condensed-phase systems, where low fractional-charge and fractional-spin errors are simultaneously important. The proposed rung 4 functionals thereby largely escape the usual zero-sum game between these two quantities and are expected to open new areas of accurate computations by Kohn-Sham DFT. At the same time, they require essentially no extra computational effort over the underlying ωLH22t functional, which means that their use is only moderately more demanding than that of global, local, or range-separated hybrid functionals.

Reproducibility of density functional approximations: How new functionals should be reported

Density functional theory is the workhorse of chemistry and materials science, and novel density functional approximations are published every year. To become available in program packages, the novel density functional approximations (DFAs) need to be (re)implemented. However, according to our experience as developers of Libxc [Lehtola et al., SoftwareX 7, 1 (2018)], a constant problem in this task is verification due to the lack of reliable reference data. As we discuss in this work, this lack has led to several non-equivalent implementations of functionals such as Becke-Perdew 1986, Perdew-Wang 1991, Perdew-Burke-Ernzerhof, and Becke's three-parameter hybrid functional with Lee-Yang-Parr correlation across various program packages, yielding different total energies. Through careful verification, we have also found many issues with incorrect functional forms in recent DFAs. The goal of this work is to ensure the reproducibility of DFAs. DFAs must be verifiable in order to prevent the reappearance of the above-mentioned errors and incompatibilities. A common framework for verification and testing is, therefore, needed. We suggest several ways in which reference energies can be produced with free and open source software, either with non-self-consistent calculations with tabulated atomic densities or via self-consistent calculations with various program packages. The employed numerical parameters-especially the quadrature grid-need to be converged to guarantee a ≲0.1 μEh precision in the total energy, which is nowadays routinely achievable in fully numerical calculations. Moreover, as such sub-μEh level agreement can only be achieved when fully equivalent implementations of the DFA are used, the source code of the reference implementation should also be made available in any publication describing a new DFA.

Local Hybrid Functional Applicable to Weakly and Strongly Correlated Systems

The recent idea (Wodyński, A.; Arbuznikov, A. V.; Kaupp M. J. Chem. Phys. 2021, 155, 144101) to augment local hybrid functionals by a strong-correlation (sc) factor obtained from the adiabatic connection in the spirit of the KP16 model has been extended and applied to generate the accurate sc-corrected local hybrid functional scLH22t. By damping small values of the ratio between nondynamical and dynamical correlation entering the correction factor, it has become possible to avoid double counting of nondynamical correlation for weakly correlated situations and thereby preserve the excellent accuracy of the underlying LH20t local hybrid for such cases almost perfectly. On the other hand, scLH22t improves substantially over LH20t in reducing fractional-spin errors (FSEs), in providing improved spin-restricted bond dissociation curves, and in treating some typical systems with multireference character. The obtained FSEs are similar to those of the KP16/B13 model and slightly larger than for B13, but performance for weakly correlated systems is better than for these two related methods, which are also difficult to use self-consistently. The recent DM21 functional based on the training of a deep neural network still performs somewhat better than scLH22t but allows no physical insights into the origins of reduced FSEs. Examination of local mixing functions (LMFs) for the corrected scLH22t and uncorrected LH20t functionals provides further insights: in weakly correlated situations, the LMF remains essentially unchanged. Strong-correlation effects manifest in a reduction of the LMF values in certain regions of space, even to the extent of producing negative LMF values. It is suggested that this is the mechanism by which also DM21, which may be viewed as a range-separated local hybrid, is able to reduce FSEs.

Solid-state performance of a meta-GGA screened hybrid density functional constructed from Pauli kinetic enhancement factor dependent semilocal exchange hole

The semilocal form of the exchange hole is highly useful in developing non-local range-separated hybrid density functionals for finite and extended systems. The way to construct the conventional exact exchange hole model is based on either the Taylor series expansion or the reverse engineering technique from the corresponding exchange energy functional. Although the latter technique is quite popular in context of generalized gradient approximation (GGA) functionals, the same for the meta-GGA functionals is not so much explored. Thus, in this study, we propose a reverse-engineered semilocal exchange hole of a meta-GGA functional, that depends only on the meta-GGA ingredient α (also known as the Pauli kinetic energy enhancement factor). The model is used subsequently to design the short-range-separated meta-GGA hybrid density functional. We show that the present method can be successfully applied for several challenging problems in the context of solids, especially for which the GGA based hybrid fails drastically. This assessment proves that the present functional is quite useful for materials sciences. Finally, we also use this method for several molecular test cases, where the results are also as comparative as its base semilocal functional.

Accurate band gaps from exchange potentials designed from a cuspless hydrogen density-based exchange hole model

The explicit forms of exchange-correlation (XC) potentials, which are not functional derivatives of any XC energy functional, are reasonably efficient in predicting the band gap of materials. The most successful example in this genre is the MBJ [F. Tran et al., Phys. Rev. Lett., 2009 102, 226401] exchange potential, which is based on the asymptotically correct Becke-Roussel (BR) exchange potential. We employ the cuspless hydrogen density and corresponding exchange hole to construct a BR like potential. The modified BR potential is again utilized in the framework of MBJ for band gap calculations. Also, we employ a Laplacian free model of the exchange hole in the framework of MBJ. These methods are analyzed by calculating band gaps of various test sets containing narrow, intermediate, and wide bandgap materials. Besides, we apply these potentials to eighteen ternary semiconductors with a chalcopyrite structure, exciting materials for photovoltaic applications. By comparing them with MBJ, we find that the band gaps obtained using the new potentials are not uniformly larger values than the MBJ potential in all cases. But, in many instances where MBJ overestimates the gap, the new potentials' band gaps are comparatively smaller and closer to the experimental ones. We also show that these potentials can correctly predict the band structure of three-dimensional topological insulators.

Local hybrid functionals augmented by a strong-correlation model

The strong-correlation factor of the recent KP16/B13 exchange-correlation functional has been adapted and applied to the framework of local hybrid (LH) functionals. The expression identifiable as nondynamical (NDC) and dynamical (DC) correlations in LHs is modified by inserting a position-dependent KP16/B13-style strong-correlation factor q_AC(r) based on a local version of the adiabatic connection. Different ways of deriving this factor are evaluated for a simple one-parameter LH based on the local density approximation. While the direct derivation from the LH NDC term fails due to known deficiencies, hybrid approaches, where the factor is determined from the B13 NDC term as in KP16/B13 itself, provide remarkable improvements. In particular, a modified B13 NDC expression using Patra's exchange-hole curvature showed promising results. When applied to the simple LH as a first attempt, it reduces atomic fractional-spin errors and deficiencies of spin-restricted bond dissociation curves to a similar extent as the KP16/B13 functional itself while maintaining the good accuracy of the underlying LH for atomization energies and reaction barriers in weakly correlated situations. The performance of different NDC expressions in deriving strong-correlation corrections is analyzed, and areas for further improvements of strong-correlation corrected LHs and related approaches are identified. All the approaches evaluated in this work have been implemented self-consistently into a developers' version of the Turbomole program.

Bandgap of two-dimensional materials: Thorough assessment of modern exchange-correlation functionals

The density-functional theory (DFT) approximations that are the most accurate for the calculation of bandgap of bulk materials are hybrid functionals, such as HSE06, the modified Becke-Johnson (MBJ) potential, and the GLLB-SC potential. More recently, generalized gradient approximations (GGAs), such as HLE16, or meta-GGAs, such as (m)TASK, have also proven to be quite accurate for the bandgap. Here, the focus is on two-dimensional (2D) materials and the goal is to provide a broad overview of the performance of DFT functionals by considering a large test set of 298 2D systems. The present work is an extension of our recent studies [T. Rauch, M. A. L. Marques, and S. Botti, Phys. Rev. B 101, 245163 (2020); Patra et al., J. Phys. Chem. C 125, 11206 (2021)]. Due to the lack of experimental results for the bandgap of 2D systems, G₀W₀ results were taken as reference. It is shown that the GLLB-SC potential and mTASK functional provide the bandgaps that are the closest to G₀W₀. Following closely, the local MBJ potential has a pretty good accuracy that is similar to the accuracy of the more expensive hybrid functional HSE06.

Efficient Band Structure Calculation of Two-Dimensional Materials from Semilocal Density Functionals

The experimental and theoretical realization of two-dimensional (2D) materials is of utmost importance in semiconducting applications. Computational modeling of these systems with satisfactory accuracy and computational efficiency is only feasible with semilocal density functional theory methods. In the search for the most useful method in predicting the band gap of 2D materials, we assess the accuracy of recently developed semilocal exchange-correlation (XC) energy functionals and potentials. Though the explicit forms of exchange-correlation (XC) potentials are very effective against XC energy functionals for the band gap of bulk solids, their performance needs to be investigated for 2D materials. In particular, the LMBJ [J. Chem. Theory Comput.2020, 16, 2654] and GLLB-SC [Phys. Rev. B82, 2010, 115106] potentials are considered for their dominance in bulk band gap calculation. The performance of recently developed meta generalized gradient approximations, like TASK [Phys. Rev. Res.1, 2019, 033082] and MGGAC [Phys. Rev. B. 100, 2019, 155140], is also assessed. We find that the LMBJ potential constructed for 2D materials is not as successful as its parent functional, i.e., MBJ [Phys. Rev. Lett.102, 2009, 226401] in bulk solids. Due to a contribution from the derivative discontinuity, the band gaps obtained with GLLB-SC are in a certain number of cases, albeit not systematically, larger than those obtained with other methods, which leads to better agreement with the quasi-particle band gap obtained from the GW method. The band gaps obtained with TASK and MGGAC can also be quite accurate.

Unveiling the Physics Behind Hybrid Functionals

We show that accurate exchange-correlation hybrid functionals give very physically optimized effective-correlation potentials, capable of correctly describing the quantum oscillations of atoms and molecules. Based on this analysis and on understanding the error cancellation between semilocal exchange and correlation functionals, we propose a very simple, semilocal correlation potential model compatible with the exact exchange of density functional theory, which performs remarkably well for charge densities and orbital energies.

Effects of boron doping on structural, electronic, elastic, and optical properties of energetic crystal 2,6-diamino-3,5-dinitropyrazine-1-oxide: a theoretical study using the first principles calculation and Hirshfeld surface analysis

Boron-contained compounds are one kind of new energetic materials, and have been synthesized successfully lately. However, the effects of introduced boron atoms into the energetic system are unclear. In this work, using the known insensitive energy crystal 2,6-diamino-3,5-dinitropyrazine-l-oxide (LLM-105) as the model compound, boron doping effects on its crystal structure, band gap and structure, intermolecular contacts, sensitivity, elastic property, optical absorption behavior, and dielectric function were studied by the first principles calculations and Hirshfeld surface analysis. One B atom was doped at four different doping sites in the ring (two kinds of nitrogen N1/N2 and carbon atoms C3/C4), respectively, and formed four new crystals LLM-105-B1/B2/B3/B4. The results showed that the B atom and its doping site both make great influence on the structure and properties. The B doping obviously decreased the band gap and weakened the strength of intermolecular contacts, giving rise to higher sensitivity and worse safety. Especially for LLM-105-B4 which has a 0 eV value of band gap, the doped B atom made great contributions to the density of states around the Fermi level, leading to the suddenly move down of lowest unoccupied molecular orbital and directly link of total density of states at the Fermi level. Doping the B atom at the site C3 improved the ductility and plasticity of LLM-105, while LLM-105-B2 was found to be the most brittle and anisotropic crystal. Doping B atoms at sites N2 and C4 increased the absorption to green, orange, and red lights, while the absorption strength to the infrared light was enhanced in most cases. The dielectric constant and polarity were significantly increased by doping boron atoms at sites C3 and C4.

Screened range-separated hybrid by balancing the compact and slowly varying density regimes: Satisfaction of local density linear response

Due to their quantitative accuracy and ability to solve several difficulties, screened range-separated hybrid exchange-correlation functionals are now a standard approach for ab initio simulation of condensed matter systems. However, the screened range-separated hybrid functionals proposed so far are biased either toward compact or slowly varying densities. In this paper, we propose a screened range-separated hybrid functional, named HSEint, which can well describe these density regimes, achieving good accuracy for both molecular and solid-state systems. The semilocal part of the proposed functional is based on the PBEint generalized gradient approximation [E. Fabiano et al., Phys. Rev. B 82, 113104 (2010)], constructed for hybrid interfaces. To improve the functional performance, we employ exact or nearly exact constraints in the construction of range-separated hybrid functional, such as recovering of the local density linear response and semiclassical atom linear response.
