Properties of the tetravalent actinide series in aqueous phase from a microscopic simulation self-consistent engine

Hydration Structure of 102No2+: A Density Functional Theory-Molecular Dynamics Study

The hydration structure of No2+, the divalent cation of nobelium in water, was investigated by ab initio molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. First, a series of benchmark calculations were performed to validate the density functional theory (DFT) calculation methods for a molecule containing a No atom. The DFT-MD simulation of the hydration structure of No2+ was conducted after the MD method was validated by simulating the hydration structures of Ca2+ and Sr2+, whose behavior was previously reported to be similar to that of No2+. The model cluster containing M2+ (M = Ca, Sr, or No) and 32 water molecules was used for DFT-MD simulation. The results showed that the hydration distance of No2+ was intermediate between those of Ca2+ and Sr2+. This trend in the hydration distance is in good agreement with the elution position trend obtained in a previous radiochemical experiment. The calculated No-O bond lengths in the optimized structure of [No(H2O)8]2+ was 2.59 Å, while the average No-O bond length of [No(H2O)8]2+ in water by DFT-MD was 2.55 Å. This difference implies the importance of dynamic solvent effects, considering the second (and further) coordination sphere in the theoretical calculation of solution chemistry for superheavy elements.

Simulating core electron binding energies of halogenated species adsorbed on ice surfaces and in solution via relativistic quantum embedding calculations

In this work, we investigate the effects of the environment on the X-ray photoelectron spectra of hydrogen chloride and chloride ions adsorbed on ice surfaces, as well as of chloride ions in water droplets. In our approach, we combine a density functional theory (DFT) description of the ice surface with that of halogen species using the recently developed relativistic core-valence separation equation of motion coupled cluster (CVS-EOM-IP-CCSD) via the frozen density embedding formalism (FDE), to determine the K and L_1,2,3 edges of chlorine. Our calculations, which incorporate temperature effects through snapshots from classical molecular dynamics simulations, are shown to reproduce experimental trends in the change of the core binding energies of Cl^- upon moving from a liquid (water droplets) to an interfacial (ice quasi-liquid layer) environment. Our simulations yield water valence band binding energies in good agreement with experiment, which vary little between the droplets and the ice surface. For halide core binding energies there is an overall trend for overestimating experimental values, though good agreement between theory and experiment is found for Cl^- in water droplets and on ice. For HCl on the other hand there are significant discrepancies between experimental and calculated core binding energies when we consider structural models that maintain the H-Cl bond more or less intact. An analysis of models that allow for pre-dissociated and dissociated structures suggests that experimentally observed chemical shifts in binding energies between Cl^- and HCl would require that H⁺ (in the form of H₃O⁺) and Cl^- are separated by roughly 4-6 Å.

Plutonium complexes in water: new approach to ab initio modeling

Geometry optimization and the electronic structure calculations of Pu Z+ complexes (Z = 3–6) in water solution have been performed, within the framework of the DMol3 and Relativistic Discrete-Variational (RDV) methods. For the simulation of Pu Z+ molecular environment in aqueous solution we used 22 and 32 water molecules randomly distributed around cation. To model the effect of bulk solvent environment we used COSMO (Conductor-like Screening Model) potential for water (ε = 78.54). The obtained results showed that this approach allows the modeling of water dissociation and the formation of hydrolysis products. Our previously suggested scheme for the calculation of interaction energies between selected fragments of multi-molecular systems provides the quantitative estimation of the interaction strengths between plutonium in various oxidation states and each ligand in the first and second coordination shells in water solution.

Hierarchical phenomena in multicomponent liquids: simulation methods, analysis, chemistry

Complex, multicomponent, solutions have often been studied solely through the lens of specific applications of interest. Yet advances to both simulation methodologies (enhanced sampling, etc.) and analysis techniques (network analysis algorithms and others), are creating a trove of data that reveal transcending characteristics across vast compositional phase space. This perspective discusses technical considerations of the reliable and accurate simulations of complex solutions, followed by the advances to analysis algorithms that elucidate coupling of different length and timescale behavior (hierarchical phenomena). The different manifestations of hierarchical phenomena are presented across an array of solution environments, emphasizing fundamental and ongoing science questions. With a more advanced molecular understanding in hand, a quintessential application (solvent extraction) is discussed, where significant opportunities exist to re-imagine the technical scope of an established technology.
