Chilling alcohol on the computer: isothermal compressibility and the formation of hydrogen-bond clusters in liquid propan-1-ol

Molecular dynamics simulations have been performed to compute the isothermal compressibility [Formula: see text] of liquid propan-1-ol in the temperature range [Formula: see text] K. A change in behaviour, from normal (high T) to anomalous (low T), has been identified for [Formula: see text] at [Formula: see text] K. The average number of hydrogen bonds (H-bond) per molecule turns to saturation in the same temperature interval, suggesting the formation of a relatively rigid network. Indeed, simulation results show a strong tendency to form H-bond clusters with distinct boundaries, with the average largest size and width of the size distribution growing upon decreasing temperature, in agreement with previous theoretical and experimental studies. These results also emphasise a connection between the behaviour of [Formula: see text] and the formation of nanometric structures.

Orientational dynamics in supercooled glycerol computed from MD simulations: self and cross contributions

The orientational dynamics of supercooled glycerol is probed using molecular dynamics simulations for temperatures ranging from 323 K to 253 K, through correlation functions of first and second ranks of Legendre polynomials, pertaining respectively to dielectric spectroscopy (DS) and depolarized dynamic light scattering (DDLS). The self, cross, and total correlation functions are compared with relevant experimental data. The computations reveal the low sensitivity of DDLS to cross-correlations, in agreement with what is found in experimental work, and strengthen the idea of directly comparing DS and DDLS data to evaluate the effect of cross-correlations in polar liquids. The analysis of the net static cross-correlations and their spatial decomposition shows that, although cross-correlations extend over nanometric distances, their net magnitude originates, in the case of glycerol, from the first shell of neighbouring molecules. Accessing the angular dependence of the static correlation allows us to get a microscopic understanding of why the rank-1 correlation function is more sensitive to cross-correlation than its rank-2 counterpart.

Triplet States Reveal Slow Local Dynamics in the Solvation Shell of Biomolecules

Protein hydration shell dynamics plays a pivotal role in biochemical processes such as protein folding, enzyme function, molecular recognition and interaction with biological membranes. Thus, it is crucial to understand the mobility of the solvation shell at the surface of biomolecules. Triplet state solvation dynamics can reveal the slow dynamics of the solvation shell. This is done in the present work without adding separate dye molecules but instead by using a phosphorescent subgroup of the biomolecule itself. In particular, we study a small heptapeptide in a glycerol-water mixture under cryoconservation conditions so that the system can be supercooled without crystallization. We find a significant slowing of molecules in the solvation shell in the millisecond range compared to the bulk. This opens up the possibility to unravel the nature of relaxation processes in the solvation shell usually overlapping at room temperature.

Spherical Silica Functionalized by 2-Naphthalene Methanol Luminophores as a Phosphorescence Sensor

Photoluminescence is known to have huge potential for applications in studying biological systems. In that respect, phosphorescent dye molecules open the possibility to study the local slow solvent dynamics close to hard and soft surfaces and interfaces using the triplet state (TSD: triplet state solvation dynamics). However, for that purpose, probe molecules with efficient phosphorescence features are required with a fixed location on the surface. In this article, a potential TSD probe is presented in the form of a nanocomposite: we synthesize spherical silica particles with 2-naphthalene methanol molecules attached to the surface with a predefined surface density. The synthesis procedure is described in detail, and the obtained materials are characterized employing transmission electron microscopy imaging, Raman, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Finally, TSD experiments are carried out in order to confirm the phosphorescence properties of the obtained materials and the route to develop phosphorescent sensors at silica surfaces based on the presented results is discussed.

Effect of confinement on the dynamics of 1-propanol and other monohydroxy alcohols

We report the effect of confinement on the dynamics of three monohydroxy alcohols (1-propanol, 2-ethyl-1-hexanol, and 4-methyl-3-heptanol) differing in their chemical structure and, consequently, in the dielectric strength of the "Debye" process. Density functional theory calculations in bulk 1-propanol identified both linear and ring-like associations composed of up to five repeat units. The simulation results revealed that the ring structures, with a low dipole moment (∼2 D), are energetically preferred over the linear assemblies with a dipole moment of 2.18 D per repeat unit. Under confinement in nanoporous alumina (in templates with pore diameters ranging from 400 to 20 nm), all dynamic processes were found to speed up irrespective of the molecular architecture. The characteristic freezing temperatures of the α and the Debye-like processes followed the pore size dependence: T_a,D=T_a,D ^bulk-A/d^1/2, where d is the pore diameter. The characteristic "freezing" temperatures for the Debye-like (the slow process for confined 1-propanol is non-Debye) and the α-processes decrease, respectively, by 6.5 and 13 K in confined 1-propanol, by 9.5 and 19 K in confined 2-ethyl-1-hexanol, and by 9 and 23 K in confined 4-methyl-3-heptanol within the same 25 nm pores. In 2-ethyl-1-hexanol, confinement reduced the number of linearly associated repeats from approximately heptamers in the bulk to dimers within 25 pores. In addition, the slower process in bulk 2-ethyl-1-hexanol and 4-methyl-3-heptanol, where the signal is dominated by ring-like supramolecular assemblies, is clearly non-Debye. The results suggest that the effect of confinement is dominant in the latter assemblies.

Identity of the local and macroscopic dynamic elastic responses in supercooled 1-propanol

Glass-forming liquids are well known to have significant dynamic heterogeneities, leading to spatially grossly varying elastic properties throughout the system. In this paper, we compare the local elastic response of supercooled 1-propanol monitored by triplet state solvation dynamics to the macroscopic dynamic shear modulus measured by a piezo-electric gauge. The time-dependent responses are found to be identical, which means that the dynamic macroscopic shear modulus provides a good measure of the average local elastic properties. Since the macroscopic shear modulus of a dynamically inhomogeneous system in general is not just the average of the local moduli, there was no reason to expect such a result. This surprising finding not only provides constraints for models of dynamical heterogeneities in glass-forming liquids, but also allows for a fairly straightforward check on elastic models for glassy dynamics.

Triplet state solvation dynamics: extending the accessible timescale by using indole as local probe

Triplet state solvation dynamics (TSD) is a truly local measurement technique, where a dye molecule is dissolved as a probe at low concentration in a solvent. Depending on the dye molecule, local information on mechanical or dielectric solvation can be obtained. So far, this method has mainly been used to investigate topics such as fundamentals of glassy dynamics and confinement effects. Based on the procedure presented in [P. Weigl et al., Z. Phys. Chem., 2018, 232, 1017-1039] in the present contribution two new TSD probes, namely indole and its derivative cbz-tryptophan, are identified and characterized in detail. In particular, their longer phosphorescence lifetime allows for a significant extension of the timescale of local mechanical and dipolar solvation measurements. In combination with previously used dyes a measurement window of up to five orders of magnitude in time can be covered. Furthermore, we show that in cbz-tryptophan the indole unit is the phosphorescence center, while the rest of the molecule only slightly contributes to the solvation response function. The detailed understanding of these two new TSD probes presented in this work, will allow in depth investigations of solvation and the corresponding dynamics also for biologically relevant systems in the future.

Influence of High Pressure on the Local Order and Dynamical Properties of the Selected Azole Antifungals

Dielectric studies under various temperature (T) and pressure (p) conditions on five active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) with antifungal properties-itraconazole (ITZ), posaconazole (POS), terconazole (TER), ketoconazole (KET), and fluconazole (FLU)-were carried out. We have thoroughly studied the connection between the pressure coefficient of the glass transition temperature (dT_g/dp) and the activation volume of both relaxation modes (ΔV_α, ΔV_δ/α') with respect to the molecular weight (M_w) or molar volume (V_m) in these systems. Besides, high pressure data revealed that the time scale separation between α- and δ- or α'-processes increases with pressure in ITZ and TER. What is more, the activation entropy, which is a measure of cooperativity, calculated from the Eyring model for the secondary (β)-relaxation in ITZ and POS, increased and decreased, respectively, in the compressed samples. To understand these peculiar results, we have carried out X-ray diffraction (XRD) measurements on the pressure-densified glasses and found that pressure may induce frustration in molecular organization and destroy the medium-range order while enhancing the short-range correlations between molecules. This finding allowed us to conclude that varying molecular spatial arrangement is responsible for the extraordinary dynamical behavior of ITZ, POS, and TER at high pressure.

The impact of chemical structure on the formation of the medium-range order and dynamical properties of selected antifungal APIs

In this paper, we have analyzed structural, thermal, and dynamical properties of four azole antifungals: itraconazole (ITZ), posaconazole (POS), terconazole (TER) and ketoconazole (KET), differing mainly in the length of the rod-like backbone and slightly in side groups. Our investigations clearly demonstrated that the changes in the chemical structure result in a different ability to form the medium-range order (MRO) and variation in thermal and dynamical properties of these pharmaceuticals. Direct comparison of the diffractograms collected for glassy and crystalline materials indicated that the MRO observed in the former phases is related to maintaining the local molecular arrangement of the crystal structure. Moreover, it was shown that once the MRO-related diffraction peaks appear, additional mobility (δ- or α' relaxation), slower than the structural (α)-process, is also detected in dielectric spectra. This new mode is connected to the motions within supramolecular nanoaggregates. Detailed analysis of dielectric and calorimetric data also revealed that the variation in the internal structure and MRO of the examined pharmaceuticals have an impact on the glass transition temperature (Tg) shape of the α-process, isobaric fragility, molecular dynamics in the glassy state and number of dynamically correlated molecules. These findings could be helpful in an understanding the influence of different types of intermolecular MRO on the properties of substances having a similar chemical backbone.

Intermolecular cross-correlations in the dielectric response of glycerol

We suggest a way to disentangle self- from cross-correlation contributions in the dielectric spectra of glycerol. Recently it was demonstrated for monohydroxy alcohols that a detailed comparison of the dynamic susceptibilities of photon correlation and broadband dielectric spectroscopy allows to unambiguously disentangle a collective relaxation mode known as the Debye process, which arises due to supramolecular structures, and the α-relaxation, which proves to be identical in both methods. In the present paper, we apply the same idea and analysis to the paradigmatic glass former glycerol. For that purpose we present new light scattering data from photon correlation spectroscopy measurements and combine these with literature data to obtain a data set covering a dynamic range from 10^-4-10¹³ Hz. Then we apply the above mentioned analysis by comparing this data set with a corresponding set of broadband dielectric data. Our finding is that even in a polyalcohol self- and cross-correlation contributions can approximately be disentangled in that way and that the emerging picture is very similar to that in monohydroxy alcohols. This is further supported by comparing the data with fast field cycling NMR measurements and dynamic shear relaxation data from the literature, and it turns out that, within the described approach, the α-process appears very similar in all methods, while the pronounced differences observed in the spectral density are due to a different expression of the slow collective relaxational contribution. In the dielectric spectra the strength of this peak is reasonably well estimated by the Kirkwood correlation factor, which supports the view that it arises due to dynamic cross-correlations, which were previously often assumed to be negligible in dielectric measurements.
