Prediction of stability constants of metal-ligand complexes by machine learning for the design of ligands with optimal metal ion selectivity

The new LOGKPREDICT program integrates HostDesigner molecular design software with the machine learning (ML) program Chemprop. By supplying HostDesigner with predicted log K values, LOGKPREDICT enhances the computer-aided molecular design process by ranking ligands directly by metal-ligand binding strength. Harnessing reliable experimental data from a historic National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) database and data from the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC), we train message passing neural net algorithms. The multi-metal NIST-based ML model has a root mean square error (RMSE) of 0.629 ± 0.044 (R2 of 0.960 ± 0.006), while two versions of lanthanide-only IUPAC-based ML models have, respectively, RMSE of 0.764 ± 0.073 (R2 of 0.976 ± 0.005) and 0.757 ± 0.071 (R2 of 0.959 ± 0.007). For relative log K predictions on an out-of-sample set of six ligands, demonstrating metal ion selectivity, the RMSE value reaches a commendably low 0.25. We showcase the use of LOGKPREDICT in identifying ligands with high selectivity for lanthanides in aqueous solutions, a finding supported by recent experimental evidence. We also predict new ligands yet to be verified experimentally. Therefore, our ML models implemented through LOGKPREDICT and interfaced with the ligand design software HostDesigner pave the way for designing new ligands with predetermined selectivity for competing metal ions in an aqueous solution.

Dismantling of Printed Circuit Boards Enabling Electronic Components Sorting and Their Subsequent Treatment Open Improved Elemental Sustainability Opportunities

This critical review focuses on advanced recycling strategies to enable or increase recovery of chemical elements present in waste printed circuit boards (WPCBs). Conventional recycling involves manual removal of high value electronic components (ECs), followed by raw crushing of WPCBs, to recover main elements (by weight or value). All other elements remain unrecovered and end up highly diluted in post-processing wastes or ashes. To retrieve these elements, it is necessary to enrich the waste streams, which requires a change of paradigm in WPCB treatment: the disassembly of WPCBs combined with the sorting of ECs. This allows ECs to be separated by composition and to drastically increase chemical element concentration, thus making their recovery economically viable. In this report, we critically review state-of-the-art processes that dismantle and sort ECs, including some unpublished foresight from our laboratory work, which could be implemented in a recycling plant. We then identify research, business opportunities and associated advanced retrieval methods for those elements that can therefore be recovered, such as refractory metals (Ta, Nb, W, Mo), gallium, or lanthanides, or those, such as the platinum group elements, that can be recovered in a more environmentally friendly way than pyrometallurgy. The recovery methods can be directly tuned and adapted to the corresponding stream.

Molecular Forces in Liquid-Liquid Extraction

The phase transfer of ions is driven by gradients of chemical potentials rather than concentrations alone (i.e., by both the molecular forces and entropy). Extraction is a combination of high-energy interactions that correspond to short-range forces in the first solvation shell such as ion pairing or complexation forces, with supramolecular and nanoscale organization. While the latter are similar to the long-range solvent-averaged interactions in the colloidal world, in solvent extraction they are associated with lower characteristic lengths of the nanometric domain. Modeling of such complex systems is especially complicated because the two domains are coupled, whereas the resulting free energy of extraction is around k_BT to guarantee the reversibility of the practical process. Nevertheless, quantification is possible by considering a partitioning of space among the polar cores, interfacial film, and solvent. The resulting free energy of transfer can be rationalized by utilizing a combination of terms which represent strong complexation energies, counterbalanced by various entropic effects and the confinement of polar solutes in nanodomains dispersed in the diluent, together with interfacial extractant terms. We describe here this ienaics approach in the context of solvent extraction systems; it can also be applied to further complex ionic systems, such as membranes and biological interfaces.

Enabling Microscale Processing: Combined Raman and Absorbance Spectroscopy for Microfluidic On-Line Monitoring

Microfluidics have many potential applications including characterization of chemical processes on a reduced scale, spanning the study of reaction kinetics using on-chip liquid-liquid extractions, sample pretreatment to simplify off-chip analysis, and for portable spectroscopic analyses. The use of in situ characterization of process streams from laboratory-scale and microscale experiments on the same chemical system can provide comprehensive understanding and in-depth analysis of any similarities or differences between process conditions at different scales. A well-characterized extraction of Nd(NO₃)₃ from an aqueous phase of varying NO_{3^- (aq)} concentration with tributyl phosphate (TBP) in dodecane was the focus of this microscale study and was compared to an earlier laboratory-scale study utilizing counter current extraction equipment. Here, we verify that this same extraction process can be followed on the microscale using spectroscopic methods adapted for microfluidic measurement. Concentration of Nd (based on UV-vis) and nitrate (based on Raman) was chemometrically measured during the flow experiment, and resulting data were used to determine the distribution ratio for Nd. Extraction distributions measured on the microscale were compared favorably with those determined on the laboratory scale in the earlier study. Both micro-Raman and micro-UV-vis spectroscopy can be used to determine fundamental parameters with significantly reduced sample size as compared to traditional laboratory-scale approaches. This leads naturally to time, cost, and waste reductions.
