Understanding the role of thermodynamics in catalytic imine reductions

Effect of Different N/C Coordination Electronic Structures on the Activity of Bifunctional Rare-Earth Ytterbium Electrocatalysts for Oxygen Electrodes

The research and development of bifunctional electrocatalysts for the oxygen electrode is of great significance to solve the problem of electrochemical energy. Herein, the effect of different structure-activity relationships on the performance of YbNxCy-gra catalysts was explored. The bifunctional activity of graphene with a vacancy defect supported by single-atom rare-earth ytterbium was studied by density functional theory (DFT) calculations. We systematically analyzed the stability, electronic properties, and catalytic performance of potential bifunctional catalysts. The results showed that all catalysts were thermodynamically and kinetically stable. Under acidic conditions, YbN2C2-oppo-gra and YbN2C2-pen-gra showed good ORR activity, and their overpotentials were 0.53 and 0.65 V, respectively. In an alkaline environment, most of the Yb(OH)NxCy-gra catalysts showed excellent ORR and OER bifunctional catalytic activity. Their overpotentials were all below 0.6 V. In particular, the ηORR and ηOER of the Yb(OH)N4C0-gra electrocatalyst were as low as 0.33 and 0.42 V. This verified the practicability and feasibility of hydroxyl-modified catalysts to enhance activity. This research provides theoretical insights into the further design and development of high-efficiency rare-earth-supported bifunctional catalysts.

Electrophile-Arene Affinity: An Energy Scale for Evaluating the Thermodynamics of Electrophilic Dearomatization Reactions

Rational design and development of organic reactions are lofty goals in synthetic chemistry. Quantitative description of the properties of molecules and reactions by physical organic parameters plays an important role in this regard. In this Article, we report an energy scale, namely, electrophile-arene affinity (EAA), for evaluating the thermodynamics of electrophilic dearomatization reactions, a class of important transformations that can rapidly build up molecular complexity and structural diversity by converting planar aromatic compounds into three-dimensional cyclic molecules. The acquisition of EAA data can be readily achieved by theoretically calculating the enthalpy changes (ΔH) of the hypothetical reactions of various (cationic) electrophiles with aromatic systems (taking the 1-methylnaphthalen-2-olate ion as an example in this study). Linear correlations are found between the calculated ΔH values and established physical organic parameters such as the percentage of buried volume %VBur (steric effect), Hammett's σ or Brown's σ+ (electronic effect), and Mayr's E (reaction kinetics). Careful analysis of the ΔH values leads to the rational design of a dearomative alkynylation reaction using alkynyl hypervalent iodonium reagents as the electrophiles.

Thermodynamic evaluations of the acceptorless dehydrogenation and hydrogenation of pre-aromatic and aromatic N-heterocycles in acetonitrile

N-heterocycles are important chemical hydrogen-storage materials, and the acceptorless dehydrogenation and hydrogenation of N-heterocycles as organic hydrogen carriers have been widely studied, with the main focus on the catalyst synthesis and design, investigation of the redox mechanisms, and extension of substrate scope. In this work, the Gibbs free energies of the dehydrogenation of pre-aromatic N-heterocycles (YH2) and the hydrogenation of aromatic N-heterocycles (Y), i.e., ΔGH2R(YH2) and ΔGH2A(Y), were derived by constructing thermodynamic cycles using Hess' law. The thermodynamic abilities for the acceptorless dehydrogenation and hydrogenation of 78 pre-aromatic N-heterocycles (YH2) and related 78 aromatic N-heterocycles (Y) were well evaluated and discussed in acetonitrile. Moreover, the applications of the two thermodynamic parameters in identifying pre-aromatic N-heterocycles possessing reversible dehydrogenation and hydrogenation properties and the selection of the pre-aromatic N-heterocyclic hydrogen reductants in catalytic hydrogenation were considered and are discussed in detail. Undoubtedly, this work focuses on two new thermodynamic parameters of pre-aromatic and aromatic N-heterocycles, namely ΔGH2R(YH2) and ΔGH2A(Y), which are important supplements to our previous work to offer precise insights into the chemical hydrogen storage and hydrogenation reactions of pre-aromatic and aromatic N-heterocycles.

Thermodynamic Evaluations of Amines as Hydrides or Two Hydrogen Ions Reductants and Imines as Protons or Two Hydrogen Ions Acceptors, as Well as Their Application in Hydrogenation Reactions

Since the hydrogenation of imines (X) and the dehydrogenation of amines (XH2) generally involve the two hydrogen ions (H- + H+) transfer, the thermodynamic abilities of various amines releasing hydrides or two hydrogen ions as well as various imines accepting protons or two hydrogen ions are important and characteristic physical parameters. In this work, the pKa values of 84 protonated imines (XH+) in acetonitrile were predicted. Combining Gibbs free energy changes of amines releasing hydrides in acetonitrile from our previous work with the pKa(XH+) values, the Gibbs free energy changes of amines releasing two hydrogen ions and imines accepting two hydrogen ions were derived using Hess's law by constructing thermochemical cycles, and the thermodynamic evaluations of amines as hydrides or two hydrogen ions reductants and imines as protons or two hydrogen ions acceptors are well compared and discussed. Eventually, the practical application of thermodynamic data for amines and imines on hydrogenation feasibility, mechanism, and possible elementary steps was shown and discussed in this paper from the point of thermodynamics.

pH-Universal Catechol-Amine Chemistry for Versatile Hyaluronic Acid Bioadhesives

Catechol, a major mussel-inspired underwater adhesive moiety, has been used to develop functional adhesive hydrogels for biomedical applications. However, oxidative catechol chemistry for interpolymer crosslinking and adhesion is exclusively effective under alkaline conditions, with limited applications in non-alkaline conditions. To overcome this limitation, pH-universal catechol-amine chemistry to recapitulate naturally occurring biochemical events induced by pH variation in the mussel foot is suggested. Aldehyde moieties are introduced to hyaluronic acid (HA) by partial oxidation, which enables dual-mode catechol tethering to the HA via both stable amide and reactive secondary amine bonds. Because of the presence of additional reactive amine groups, the resultant aldehyde-modified HA conjugated with catechol (AH-CA) is effectively crosslinked in acidic and neutral pH conditions. The AH-CA hydrogel exhibits not only fast gelation via active crosslinking regardless of pH conditions, but also strong adhesion and excellent biocompatibility. The hydrogel enables rapid and robust wound sealing and hemostasis in neutral and alkaline conditions. The hydrogel also mediates effective therapeutic stem cell and drug delivery even in dynamic and harsh environments, such as a motile heart and acidic stomach. Therefore, the AH-CA hydrogel can serve as a versatile biomaterial in a wide range of pH conditions in vivo.

This review focuses on the thermodynamics of the elementary step of 421 organic hydrides and unsaturated compounds releasing or accepting hydride or hydrogen determined in acetonitrile as well as their potential applications.

Ternary complexes of chiral disulfonimides in transfer-hydrogenation of imines: the relevance of late intermediates in ion pair catalysis

In ion pairing catalysis, the structures of late intermediates and transition states are key to understanding and further development of the field. Typically, a plethora of transition states is explored computationally. However, especially for ion pairs the access to energetics via computational chemistry is difficult and experimental data is rare. Here, we present for the first time extensive NMR spectroscopic insights about the ternary complex of a catalyst, substrate, and reagent in ion pair catalysis exemplified by chiral Brønsted acid-catalyzed transfer hydrogenation. Quantum chemistry calculations were validated by a large amount of NMR data for the structural and energetic assessment of binary and ternary complexes. In the ternary complexes, the expected catalyst/imine H-bond switches to an unexpected O-H-N structure, not yet observed in the multiple hydrogen-bond donor-acceptor situation such as disulfonimides (DSIs). This arrangement facilitates the hydride transfer from the Hantzsch ester in the transition states. In these reactions with very high isomerization barriers preventing fast pre-equilibration, the reaction barriers from the ternary complex to the transition states determine the enantioselectivity, which deviates from the relative transition state energies. Overall, the weak hydrogen bonding, the hydrogen bond switching and the special geometrical adaptation of substrates in disulfonimide catalyst complexes explain the robustness towards more challenging substrates and show that DSIs have the potential to combine high flexibility and high stereoselectivity.

High-Density Formation of Metal/Oxide Interfacial Catalytic Active Sites through Hybrid Clustering

We developed a method for preparing catalysts based on hybrid clusters that formed high-density metal/oxide interfacial active sites. A Ru-V hybrid cluster, [{Ru(cym)}₄V₆O₁₉] (cym = p-cymene), was used as a precursor to prepare Ru-V catalysts. Transmission electron microscopy and X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) analyses revealed that composite nanoparticles of Ru and V were formed through hybrid clustering, while conventional coimpregnation of Ru and V afforded separate nanoparticles. The activity of the Ru-V catalysts toward N-alkylation of amines with alcohols depended on the mixing method (hybrid clustering > coimpregnation > physical mixing ≈ pristine Ru). The formation mechanism of the composite nanoparticles from the hybrid cluster was revealed using in situ XAS analysis. Finally, we proposed a simple but efficient catalyst preparation method, based on in situ formation of hybrid cluster precursors combined with a conventional coimpregnation method.

Catalytic Asymmetric Reduction of α-Trifluoromethylated Imines with Catecholborane by BINOL-Derived Boro-phosphates

A catalytic enantioselective reduction of α-trifluoromethylated imines by a BINOL-derived boro-phosphate employing catecholborane as hydride source has been developed. This method provides an efficient route to prepare synthetically useful chiral α-trifluoromethylated amines in high yields and with excellent enantioselectivities (up to 98% yield and 96% ee) under mild conditions.

Bonding Energetics of Palladium Amido/Aryloxide Complexes in DMSO: Implications for Palladium-Mediated Aniline Activation

Thermodynamic knowledge of the metal-ligand (M-L) σ-bond strength is crucial to understanding metal-mediated transformations. Here, we developed a method for determining the Pd-X (X=OR and NHAr) bond heterolysis energies (ΔG_het (Pd-X)) in DMSO taking [(tmeda)PdArX] (tmeda=N,N,N',N'-tetramethylethylenediamine) as the model complexes. The ΔG_het (Pd-X) scales span a range of 2.6-9.0 kcal mol^-1 for ΔG_het (Pd-O) values and of 14.5-19.5 kcal mol^-1 for ΔG_het (Pd-N) values, respectively, implying a facile heterolytic detachment of the Pd ligands. Structure-reactivity analyses of a modeling Pd-mediated X-H bond activation reveal that the M-X bond metathesis is dominated by differences of the X-H and Pd-X bond strengths, the former being more influential. The ΔG_het (Pd-X) and pK_a (X-H) parameters enable regulation of reaction thermodynamics and chemoselectivity and diagnosing the probability of aniline activation with Pd-X complexes.

Thermodynamic Network Cards of Hantzsch Ester, Benzothiazoline, and Dihydrophenanthridine Releasing Two Hydrogen Atoms or Ions on 20 Elementary Steps

In this work, thermodynamic driving forces on 20 possible elementary steps of Hantzsch ester (HEH₂), benzothiazoline (BTH₂), and dihydrophenanthridine (PDH₂) releasing two hydrogen atoms or ions were measured or derived from the related thermodynamic data using Hess' law in acetonitrile. Furthermore, thermodynamic network cards of HEH₂, BTH₂, and PDH₂ releasing two hydrogen atoms or ions on 20 elementary steps were first established. Based on the thermodynamic network cards, hydride-donating, hydrogen-atom-donating, and electron-donating abilities of XH₂ and XH^-, and two hydrogen-atom(ion)-donating abilities of XH₂ are discussed in detail. Obviously, the thermodynamic network cards of HEH₂, BTH₂, and PDH₂ not only offer rational data guidance for organic synthetic chemists to properly choose an appropriate reducer among the three reducing agents to hydrogenate various unsaturated compounds but also strongly promote elucidatation of the detailed hydrogenation mechanisms.

Diazaphosphinanes as hydride, hydrogen atom, proton or electron donors under transition-metal-free conditions: thermodynamics, kinetics, and synthetic applications

Exploration of new hydrogen donors is in large demand in hydrogenation chemistry. Herein, we developed a new 1,3,2-diazaphosphinane 1a, which can serve as a hydride, hydrogen atom or proton donor without transition-metal mediation. The thermodynamics and kinetics of these three pathways of 1a, together with those of its analog 1b, were investigated in acetonitrile. It is noteworthy that, the reduction potentials (E_red) of the phosphenium cations 1a-[P]+ and 1b-[P]+ are extremely low, being −1.94 and −2.39 V (vs. Fc^+/0), respectively, enabling corresponding phosphinyl radicals to function as neutral super-electron-donors. Kinetic studies revealed an extraordinarily large kinetic isotope effect KIE(1a) of 31.3 for the hydrogen atom transfer from 1a to the 2,4,6-tri-(tert-butyl)-phenoxyl radical, implying a tunneling effect. Furthermore, successful applications of these diverse P–H bond energetic parameters in organic syntheses were exemplified, shedding light on more exploitations of these versatile and powerful diazaphosphinane reagents in organic chemistry.

A new 1,3,2-diazaphosphinane, serving as a formal hydride, hydrogen-atom or proton donor without transition-metal mediation was exploited thermodynamically and kinetically. And, its promising potentials in versatile syntheses have been demonstrated.

Synthesis of Pluri-Functional Amine Hardeners from Bio-Based Aromatic Aldehydes for Epoxy Amine Thermosets

Most of the current amine hardeners are petro-sourced and only a few studies have focused on the research of bio-based substitutes. Hence, in an eco-friendly context, our team proposed the design of bio-based amine monomers with aromatic structures. This work described the use of the reductive amination with imine intermediate in order to obtain bio-based pluri-functional amines exhibiting low viscosity. The effect of the nature of initial aldehyde reactant on the hardener properties was studied, as well as the reaction conditions. Then, these pluri-functional amines were added to petro-sourced (diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A, DGEBA) or bio-based (diglycidyl ether of vanillin alcohol, DGEVA) epoxy monomers to form thermosets by step growth polymerization. Due to their low viscosity, the epoxy-amine mixtures were easily homogenized and cured more rapidly compared to the use of more viscous hardeners (<0.6 Pa s at 22 °C). After curing, the thermo-mechanical properties of the epoxy thermosets were determined and compared. The isophthalatetetramine (IPTA) hardener, with a higher number of amine active H, led to thermosets with higher thermo-mechanical properties (glass transition temperatures (T_g and T_α) were around 95 °C for DGEBA-based thermosets against 60 °C for DGEVA-based thermosets) than materials from benzylamine (BDA) or furfurylamine (FDA) that contained less active hydrogens (T_g and T_α around 77 °C for DGEBA-based thermosets and T_g and T_α around 45 °C for DGEVA-based thermosets). By comparing to industrial hardener references, IPTA possesses six active hydrogens which obtain high cross-linked systems, similar to industrial references, and longer molecular length due to the presence of two alkyl chains, leading respectively to high mechanical strength with lower T_g.
