Rational design of metal-based nanocomposite catalysts for enhancing their stability in solid acid catalysis

The use of supported metal-based heterogeneous catalysts is very ubiquitous in the modern chemical industry. Although high reactivity has been achieved, conventional supported metal-based heterogeneous catalysts commonly face the problem of rapid deactivation, generally involving leaching, poisoning or sintering of the active metal species, which is particularly serious in various solid acid catalysis processes. To overcome these drawbacks, different strategies have been adopted, including strengthening metal-support interactions, confining metal species in various porous materials, or coating the active metal nanoparticles with thin shells, which may generate effective metal-based nanocomposite catalysts with enhanced stability. In this feature article, we summarize our recent work on the design of some metal-based nanocomposites possessing yolk-shell, core-shell or other confined structures for enhanced catalytic applications in several important acid catalysis reactions, such as cycloaddition of CO2, epoxidation of olefins, acylation of aromatic compounds, and transesterification/carbonylation synthesis of organic carbonates. More attention is paid to the design and preparation strategy of metal-based nanocomposite catalysts, which can generate unique catalytically active and stable metal sites for meeting the tough requirements of a specific catalytic reaction. Finally, the existing challenges and the future directions for metal-based nanocomposite catalysts with respect to the preparation strategies and catalytic application prospects are proposed.

Mechanism of Friedel-Crafts Acylation Using Metal Triflate in Deep Eutectic Solvents: An Experimental and Computational Study

In this paper, we develop a method for Friedel-Crafts acylation using metal triflate in deep eutectic solvents. Various metal triflates were tested and provided good to excellent yields of corresponding ketone products. The density functional theory calculation revealed the metal effects on the formation of active intermediate acylium triflate as well as the acidic condition. The metal triflate in the deep eutectic solvent can be recovered and reused with a little loss in the catalytic activity.

Recent Advances in Carbon-Based Iron Catalysts for Organic Synthesis

Carbon-based iron catalysts combining the advantages of iron and carbon material are efficient and sustainable catalysts for green organic synthesis. The present review summarizes the recent examples of carbon-based iron catalysts for organic reactions, including reduction, oxidation, tandem and other reactions. In addition, the introduction strategies of iron into carbon materials and the structure and activity relationship (SAR) between these catalysts and organic reactions are also highlighted. Moreover, the challenges and opportunities of organic synthesis over carbon-based iron catalysts have also been addressed. This review will stimulate more systematic and in-depth investigations on carbon-based iron catalysts for exploring sustainable organic chemistry.

Well-Dispersed Trifluoromethanesulfonic Acid-Treated Metal Oxide Nanoparticles Immobilized on Nitrogen-Doped Carbon as Catalysts for Friedel-Crafts Acylation

Although strong acid-treated metal oxides are useful heterogeneous superacid catalysts for various organic transformations, they usually have a limited density of acidic sites due to their low surface areas. Herein, heterogeneous trifluoromethanesulfonic acid immobilized nitrogen-doped carbon-incarcerated titanium nanoparticle (NP) catalysts have been developed that are composed of well-dispersed, small Ti NPs (ca 7 nm) that are otherwise difficult to achieve using acid-treated metal oxides. The catalysts showed high activity for Friedel-Crafts acylation with low titanium loading (2 mol%, <1 mg of metal for 1 mmol of substrate). A range of microscopic, spectroscopic and physicochemical studies revealed that the nitrogen-doped carbon immobilized the trifluoromethanesulfonic acid and that the addition of metals further changed the nature of the acidic species and enhanced catalytic activity.
