A compendium of all-in-one solar-driven water splitting using ZnIn2S4-based photocatalysts: guiding the path from the past to the limitless future

Photocatalytic water splitting represents a leading approach to harness the abundant solar energy, producing hydrogen as a clean and sustainable energy carrier. Zinc indium sulfide (ZIS) emerges as one of the most captivating candidates attributed to its unique physicochemical and photophysical properties, attracting much interest and holding significant promise in this domain. To develop a highly efficient ZIS-based photocatalytic system for green energy production, it is paramount to comprehensively understand the strengths and limitations of ZIS, particularly within the framework of solar-driven water splitting. This review elucidates the three sequential steps that govern the overall efficiency of ZIS with a sharp focus on the mechanisms and inherent drawbacks associated with each phase, including commonly overlooked aspects such as the jeopardising photocorrosion issue, the neglected oxidative counter surface reaction kinetics in overall water splitting, the sluggish photocarrier dynamics and the undesired side redox reactions. Multifarious material design strategies are discussed to specifically mitigate the formidable limitations and bottleneck issues. This review concludes with the current state of ZIS-based photocatalytic water splitting systems, followed by personal perspectives aimed at elevating the field to practical consideration for future endeavours towards sustainable hydrogen production through solar-driven water splitting.

Defect and Donor Manipulated Highly Efficient Electron-Hole Separation in a 3D Nanoporous Schottky Heterojunction

Given the rapid recombination of photogenerated charge carriers and photocorrosion, transition metal sulfide photocatalysts usually suffer from modest photocatalytic performance. Herein, S-vacancy-rich ZnIn2S4 (VS-ZIS) nanosheets are integrated on 3D bicontinuous nitrogen-doped nanoporous graphene (N-npG), forming 3D heterostructures with well-fitted geometric configuration (VS-ZIS/N-npG) for highly efficient photocatalytic hydrogen production. The VS-ZIS/N-npG presents ultrafast interfacial photogenerated electrons captured by the S vacancies in VS-ZIS and holes neutralization behaviors by the extra free electrons in N-npG during photocatalysis, which are demonstrated by in situ XPS, femtosecond transient absorption (fs-TA) spectroscopy, and transient-state surface photovoltage (TS-SPV) spectra. The simulated interfacial charge rearrangement behaviors from DFT calculations also verify the separation tendency of photogenerated charge carriers. Thus, the optimized VS-ZIS/N-npG 3D hierarchical heterojunction with 1.0 wt % N-npG exhibits a comparably high hydrogen generation rate of 4222.4 μmol g-1 h-1, which is 5.6-fold higher than the bare VS-ZIS and 12.7-fold higher than the ZIS without S vacancies. This work sheds light on the rational design of photogenerated carrier transfer paths to facilitate charge separation and provides further hints for the design of hierarchical heterostructure photocatalysts.

Interface Engineering in 2D/2D Heterogeneous Photocatalysts

Assembling different 2D nanomaterials into heterostructures with strong interfacial interactions presents a promising approach for novel artificial photocatalytic materials. Chemically implementing the 2D nanomaterials' construction/stacking modes to regulate different interfaces can extend their functionalities and achieve good performance. Herein, based on different fundamental principles and photochemical processes, multiple construction modes (e.g., face-to-face, edge-to-face, interface-to-face, edge-to-edge) are overviewed systematically with emphasis on the relationships between their interfacial characteristics (e.g., point, linear, planar), synthetic strategies (e.g., in situ growth, ex situ assembly), and enhanced applications to achieve precise regulation. Meanwhile, recent efforts for enhancing photocatalytic performances of 2D/2D heterostructures are summarized from the critical factors of enhancing visible light absorption, accelerating charge transfer/separation, and introducing novel active sites. Notably, the crucial roles of surface defects, cocatalysts, and surface modification for photocatalytic performance optimization of 2D/2D heterostructures are also discussed based on the synergistic effect of optimization engineering and heterogeneous interfaces. Finally, perspectives and challenges are proposed to emphasize future opportunities for expanding 2D/2D heterostructures for photocatalysis.

Interfacial C-S Bonds of g-C3 N4 /Bi19 Br3 S27 S-Scheme Heterojunction for Enhanced Photocatalytic CO2 Reduction

Step-scheme (S-scheme) heterojunctions have been extensively studied in photocatalytic carbon dioxide (CO₂ ) reduction due to their excellent charge separation and high redox ability. The built-in electric field at the interface of a S-scheme heterojunction serves as the driving force for charge transfer, however, the poor interfacial contact greatly restricts the carrier migration rate. Herein, we synthesized the g-C₃ N₄ /Bi₁₉ Br₃ S₂₇ S-scheme heterostructure through in situ deposition of Bi₁₉ Br₃ S₂₇ (BBS) on porous g-C₃ N₄ (P-CN) nanosheets. The C-S bonds formed at the interface help to enhance the built-in electric field, thereby promoting the charge transfer and separation. As a result, the CO₂ reduction reaction performance of 10 %Bi₁₉ Br₃ S₂₇ /g-C₃ N₄ (BBS/P-CN) reaches 32.78 μmol g^-1 h^-1 , which is 341.4 and 18.7 times higher than that of pure BBS and P-CN, respectively. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) prove the presence of chemical bonds (C-S) between the P-CN and BBS. The S-scheme charge-transfer mechanism was analyzed via XPS and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. This work provides a new idea for designing heterojunction photocatalysts with interfacial chemical bonds to achieve high charge-transfer and catalytic activity.

Solvent Etching Process for Graphitic Carbon Nitride Photocatalysts Containing Platinum Cocatalyst: Effects of Water Hydrolysis on Photocatalytic Properties and Hydrogen Evolution Behaviors

In this study, we synthesized Pt/g-C₃N₄ photocatalysts modified by a solvent etching process where ethanol (Pt/CN0), water (Pt/CN100), and a 50:50 mixture (Pt/CN50) were used as a solvent, and investigated the optimal properties of g-C₃N₄ to prepare the best Pt/g-C₃N₄ for photocatalytic hydrogen evolution. From diverse characterizations, water was proven to be a stronger solvent agent, resulting in not only the introduction of more O-functional groups onto the g-C₃N₄ surface, but also the degradation of a regular array of tri-s-triazine units in the g-C₃N₄ structure. While the addition of O-functional groups positively influenced the oxidation state of the Pt cocatalyst and the hydrogen production rate, the changes to g-C₃N₄ structure retarded charge transfer on its surface, inducing negative effects such as fast recombination and less oxidized Pt species. Pt/CN50 that was synthesized with the 50:50 solvent mixture exhibited the highest hydrogen production rate of 590.9 µmol g⁻¹h⁻¹, while the hydrogen production rates of Pt/CN0 (with pure ethanol solvent) and Pt/CN100 (with pure water solvent) were 462.7, and 367.3 µmol g⁻¹h⁻¹, respectively.

Robust visible-light photocatalytic H2 evolution on 2D RGO/Cd0.15Zn0.85In2S4–Ni2P hierarchitectures

Unique 2D ternary hierarchitectures constructed from reduced graphene oxide nanosheets grown with ultrathin Cd0.15Zn0.85In2S4 nanosheets and Ni2P nanoparticles exhibited an outstanding capability for visible-light photocatalytic H2 production.

Visible Light-Driven D-A Conjugated Linear Polymer and Its Coating for Dual Highly Efficient Photocatalytic Degradation and Disinfection

Herein, a novel donor-acceptor (D-A) conjugated linear polymeric system, poly[(2,6-(4,8-bis(5-(2-ethylhexyl)-4-fluorothiophen-2-yl)-benzo[1,2-b:4,5-b']dithiophene))-alt-2,5-(3-carboxyl)-thiophene] (PBDT-F-COOH), with outstanding processing ability and its all-organic PBDT-F-COOH coating featuring chemical bonding for combination with polyurethane were prepared. Wide visible spectrum-driven PBDT-F-COOH and PBDT-F-COOH-PU showed dual efficient photocatalytic activities toward degradation and disinfection, mainly attributing to efficient dissociation of excitons and transfer of charge carriers, resulting from the large dipole moment of D-A PBDT-F-COOH. PBDT-F-COOH demonstrated >99.2% inactivation of Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) within 1 h and a 7-log decrease in 4 h under visible light irradiation. Additionally, the coating showed the 7-log inactivation of S. aureus in 7 h. These inactivation efficiency results are among those of the best reported D-A conjugated linear polymers. Importantly, PBDT-F-COOH and the PBDT-F-COOH-PU coating both presented satisfactory stability with high photocatalytic activity after recycling runs. This work provides a feasible approach for fabricating nontoxic and highly active organic photocatalysts with wide visible spectra and a large dipole moment via a D-A linear structure design protocol.

ZnIn2 S4 -Based Photocatalysts for Energy and Environmental Applications

As a fascinating visible-light-responsive photocatalyst, zinc indium sulfide (ZnIn₂ S₄ ) has attracted extensive interdisciplinary interest and is expected to become a new research hotspot in the near future, due to its nontoxicity, suitable band gap, high physicochemical stability and durability, ease of synthesis, and appealing catalytic activity. This review provides an overview on the recent advances in ZnIn₂ S₄ -based photocatalysts. First, the crystal structures and band structures of ZnIn₂ S₄ are briefly introduced. Then, various modulation strategies of ZnIn₂ S₄ are outlined for better photocatalytic performance, which includes morphology and structure engineering, vacancy engineering, doping engineering, hydrogenation engineering, and the construction of ZnIn₂ S₄ -based composites. Thereafter, the potential applications in the energy and environmental area of ZnIn₂ S₄ -based photocatalysts are summarized. Finally, some personal perspectives about the promises and prospects of this emerging material are provided.

Challenges and prospects about the graphene role in the design of photoelectrodes for sunlight-driven water splitting

Graphene and its derivatives have emerged as potential materials for several technological applications including sunlight-driven water splitting reactions. This review critically addresses the latest achievements concerning the use of graphene as a player in the design of hybrid-photoelectrodes for photoelectrochemical cells. Insights about the charge carrier dynamics of graphene-based photocatalysts which include metal oxides and non-metal oxide semiconductors are also discussed. The concepts underpinning the continued progress in the field of graphene/photoelectrodes, including different graphene structures, architecture as well as the possible mechanisms for hydrogen and oxygen reactions are also presented. Despite several reports having demonstrated the potential of graphene-based photocatalysts, the achieved performance remains far from the targeted benchmark efficiency for commercial application. This review also highlights the challenges and opportunities related to graphene application in photoelectrochemical cells for future directions in the field.

Path of electron transfer created in S-doped NH2-UiO-66 bridged ZnIn2S4/MoS2 nanosheet heterostructure for boosting photocatalytic hydrogen evolution

This work introduces the synthesis of ZnIn₂S₄/NH₂-UiO-66/MoS₂ sheet heterostructure photocatalysts and their application to photocatalytic hydrogen evolution.
