Structural derivatization strategies of natural phenols by semi-synthesis and total-synthesis

Structural derivatization of natural products has been a continuing and irreplaceable source of novel drug leads. Natural phenols are a broad category of natural products with wide pharmacological activity and have offered plenty of clinical drugs. However, the structural complexity and wide variety of natural phenols leads to the difficulty of structural derivatization. Skeleton analysis indicated most types of natural phenols can be structured by the combination and extension of three common fragments containing phenol, phenylpropanoid and benzoyl. Based on these fragments, the derivatization strategies of natural phenols were unified and comprehensively analyzed in this review. In addition to classical methods, advanced strategies with high selectivity, efficiency and practicality were emphasized. Total synthesis strategies of typical fragments such as stilbenes, chalcones and flavonoids were also covered and analyzed as the supplementary for supporting the diversity-oriented derivatization of natural phenols.

Hydrogen bonding-catalysed alcoholysis of propylene oxide at room temperature

Alcoholysis of propylene oxide (PO) is achieved over azolate ionic liquids (IL, e.g., 1-hydroxyethyl-3-methyl imidazolium imidazolate) at room temperature, accessing glycol ethers in high yields with excellent selectivity (e.g., >99%). Mechanism investigation indicates that cooperation of hydrogen-bonding of the anion with methanol and that of the cation with PO catalyses the reaction.

Synthesis of core-shell Ce-modified mixed metal oxides derived from P123-templated layered double hydroxides

Layered double hydroxides are a promising platform material which can be combined with a variety of active species based on their characteristic features. Silicon@P123-templated Ce-doped layered double hydroxide (SiO2@CeMgAl-LDH(P123)) composites were synthesized via a facile in situ co-precipitation method, and characterized by TEM, X-ray diffraction, FTIR, XPS, CO2-, etc. in detail. Meanwhile, the calcined powder (SiO2@CeMgAl-LDO(P123)) possessed an excellent core-shell structure and a high surface area inherited from the LDH structure, which led to an outstanding catalytic activity (99.7% conversion of propylene oxide, 92.4% selectivity of propylene glycol methyl ether) under mild reaction conditions (120 °C). Cerium oxide provides a large number of oxygen vacancies and significantly improves the medium basic strength of the material, which facilitates the selective ring-opening of PO. Furthermore, the introduction and removal of P123 make the cerium oxide uniformly dispersed on the LDH layers, providing more reaction sites for the reaction of methanol and propylene oxide. The core-shell structure prepared by the in situ co-precipitation method could solve the shortcomings of agglomeration of layered double hydroxides and prolong the catalytic life evidently.

Strategy of regulating the electrophilic/nucleophilic ability by ionic ratio in poly(ionic liquid)s to control the coupling reaction of epoxide

The ionic ratio could control the chemical–physical properties of PILs, and show an enhanced catalytic performance under an optimized ionic ratio in the coupling reaction of epoxide and CO2 or methanol.
