Modulating the Inclusive and Coordinating Ability of Thiacalix[4]arene and Its Antenna Effect on Yb3-Luminescence via Upper-Rim Substitution+

The present work introduces the series of thiacalix[4]arenes (H₄L) bearing different upper-rim substituents (R = H, Br, NO₂) for rational design of ligands providing an antenna-effect on the NIR Yb³⁺-centered luminescence of their Yb³⁺ complexes. The unusual inclusive self-assembly of H₃L⁻ (Br) through Br…π interactions is revealed through single-crystal XRD analysis. Thermodynamically favorable formation of dimeric complexes [2Yb³⁺:2HL³⁻] leads to efficient sensitizing of the Yb³⁺ luminescence for H₄L (Br, NO₂), while poor sensitizing is observed for ligand H₄L (H). X-ray analysis of the single crystal separated from the basified DMF solutions of YbCl₃ and H₄L(NO₂) has revealed the transformation of the dimeric complexes into [4Yb³⁺:2L⁴⁻] ones with a cubane-like cluster structure. The luminescence characteristics of the complexes in the solutions reveal the peculiar antenna effect of H₄L(R = NO₂), where the triplet level at 567 nm (17,637 cm⁻¹) arisen from ILCT provides efficient sensitizing of the Yb³⁺ luminescence.

Helicate versus Mesocate in Quadruple-Stranded Lanthanide Cages: A Computational Insight

To drive the synthesis of metallo-supramolecular assemblies (MSAs) and to fully exploit their functional properties, robust computational tools are crucial. The capability to model and to rationalize different parameters that can influence the outcome is mandatory. Here, we report a computational insight on the factors that can determine the relative stability of the supramolecular isomers helicate and mesocate in lanthanide-based quadruple-stranded assemblies. The considered MSAs have the general formula [Ln₂L₄]²⁻ and possess a cavity suitable to allocate guests. The analysis was focused on three different factors: the ligand rigidity and the steric hindrance, the presence of a guest inside the cavity, and the guest dimension. Three different quantum mechanical calculation set-ups (in vacuum, with the solvent, and with the solvent and the dispersion correction) were considered. Comparison between theoretical and experimental outcomes suggests that all calculations correctly estimated the most stable isomer, while the inclusion of the dispersion correction is mandatory to reproduce the geometrical parameters. General guidelines can be drawn: less rigid and less bulky is the ligand and less stable is the helicate, and the presence of a guest can strongly affect the isomerism leading to an inversion of the stability by increasing the guest size when the ligand is flexible.

Tuning the photophysical properties of lanthanide(iii)/zinc(ii) 'encapsulated sandwich' metallacrowns emitting in the near-infrared range

A family of Zn16Ln(HA)16 metallacrowns (MCs; Ln = YbIII, ErIII, and NdIII; HA = picoline- (picHA2-), pyrazine- (pyzHA2-), and quinaldine- (quinHA2-) hydroximates) with an 'encapsulated sandwich' structure possesses outstanding luminescence properties in the near-infrared (NIR) and suitability for cell imaging. Here, to decipher which parameters affect their functional and photophysical properties and how the nature of the hydroximate ligands can allow their fine tuning, we have completed this Zn16Ln(HA)16 family by synthesizing MCs with two new ligands, naphthyridine- (napHA2-) and quinoxaline- (quinoHA2-) hydroximates. Zn16Ln(napHA)16 and Zn16Ln(quinoHA)16 exhibit absorption bands extended into the visible range and efficiently sensitize the NIR emissions of YbIII, ErIII, and NdIII upon excitation up to 630 nm. The energies of the lowest singlet (S1), triplet (T1) and intra-ligand charge transfer (ILCT) states have been determined. LnIII-centered total (Q L Ln) and intrinsic (Q Ln Ln) quantum yields, sensitization efficiencies (η sens), observed (τ obs) and radiative (τ rad) luminescence lifetimes have been recorded and analyzed in the solid state and in CH3OH and CD3OD solutions for all Zn16Ln(HA)16. We found that, within the Zn16Ln(HA)16 family, τ rad values are not constant for a particular LnIII. The close in energy positions of T1 and ILCT states in Zn16Ln(picHA)16 and Zn16Ln(quinHA)16 are preferred for the sensitization of LnIII NIR emission and η sens values reach 100% for NdIII. Finally, the highest values of Q L Ln are observed for Zn16Ln(quinHA)16 in the solid state or in CD3OD solutions. With these data at hand, we are now capable of creating MCs with desired properties suitable for NIR optical imaging.

Coordination-Directed Self-Assembly of Functional Polynuclear Lanthanide Supramolecular Architectures

Lanthanide supramolecular chemistry is a fast growing and intriguing research field due to the unique photophysical, magnetic, and coordination properties of lanthanide ions (Ln^III). Compared with the intensively investigated mononuclear Ln-complexes, polymetallic lanthanide supramolecular assemblies offer more structural superiority and functional advantages. In recent decades, significant progress has been made in polynuclear lanthanide supramolecules, varying from structural evolution to luminescent and magnetic functional materials. This review summarizes the design principles in ligand-induced coordination-driven self-assembly of polynuclear Ln-structures and intends to offer guidance for the construction of more elegant Ln-based architectures and optimization of their functional performances. Design principles concerning the water solubility and chirality of the lanthanide-organic assemblies that are vital in extending their applications are emphasized. The strategies for improving the luminescent properties and the applications in up-conversion, host-guest chemistry, luminescent sensing, and catalysis have been summarized. Magnetic materials based on supramolecular assembled lanthanide architectures are given in an individual section and are classified based on their structural features. Challenges remaining and perspective directions in this field are also briefly discussed.

Nanomolar determination of nitrofurans in water via excited-state inter-ligand proton transfer

Qualification and quantification of trace organic contaminants necessitates development of highly efficient sensing system, where excited-state inter-ligand proton transfer (ESILPT) provides a feasible pathway to construct efficient chemo-sensors. Herein, a strategically synthesized lanthanide complex, Eu(DBM)₃(MeOH)₃ (briefly as Eu-DBM-MeOH; DBM = dibenzoylmethane), features two-step ESILPT processes, along with modification on molecular structure and energy band. As a result, Eu-DBM-MeOH exhibits excellent photophysical properties with characteristic luminescence of Eu³⁺ ion. Benefiting from these merits, the Eu-DBM-MeOH complex acts as ultra-sensitive chemo-sensor toward nanomolar-level nitrofuran antibiotics (nitrofurazone and nitrofurantoin) in water, by disrupting ESILPT processes. Combining the advantages on photophysical property and luminescent sensitivity, ESILPT-active compounds are expected to widen and deepen the research on complex-based luminophores, being potentially useful in trace detection and biological imaging.

Designing water-quenching resistant highly luminescent europium complexes by regulating the orthogonal arrangement of bis-β-diketone ligands

Luminescent β-diketone-based lanthanide complexes have been well explored as chemical sensor materials for biomedicine applications. Herein, three mononuclear Eu3+ complexes based on bis-β-diketone ligands (L1, L2 and L3) that can reduce luminescence quenching caused by water were developed. The ligands feature two β-diketone units covalently bound at the 1,8-position of the derivatized anthracene (modified with tetracyanoethylene, TCNE). X-ray crystallographic analysis reveals that their self-assemblies with Ln3+ ions in a 2 : 1 stoichiometric ratio form mononuclear anion complexes, [EuL2]-, in which two ligands coordinate to the metal center in a mutually orthogonal manner. This kind of arrangement together with the bulge of TCNE from the anthracene plane well protected the complexes from the quenching effects of water molecules in the second coordination. The photophysical measurements showed that the complexes not only had high luminescence quantum yields (QYs, up to 50-67%) but also presented excellent water-quenching resistant capability.

Photocytotoxicity of Thiophene- and Bithiophene-Dipicolinato Luminescent Lanthanide Complexes

New thiophene-dipicolinato-based compounds, K₂nTdpa (n = 1, 2), were isolated. Their anions are sensitizers of lanthanide ion (Ln^III) luminescence and singlet oxygen generation (¹O₂). Emission in the visible and near-infrared regions was observed for the Ln^III complexes with efficiencies (ϕ^Ln) ϕ^Eu = 33% and ϕ^Yb = 0.31% for 1Tdpa^2- and ϕ^Yb = 0.07% for 2Tdpa^2-. The latter does not sensitize Eu^III emission. Fluorescence imaging of HeLa live cells incubated with K₃[Eu(1Tdpa)₃] indicates that the complex permeates the cell membrane and localizes in the mitochondria. All complexes generate ¹O₂ in solution with efficiencies (ϕO12) as high as 13 and 23% for the Gd^III complexes of 1Tdpa^2- and 2Tdpa^2-, respectively. [Ln(nTdpa)₃]^3- (n = 1, 2) are phototoxic to HeLa cells when irradiated with UV light with IC₅₀ values as low as 4.2 μM for [Gd(2Tdpa)₃]^3- and 91.8 μM for [Eu(1Tdpa)₃]^3-. Flow cytometric analyses indicate both apoptotic and necrotic cell death pathways.

Ancillary ligand modulated stereoselective self-assembly of triple-stranded Eu(iii) helicate featuring circularly polarized luminescence

Creating optically pure metal assemblies is a hot research topic in the realms of chiral supramolecules. Here, three new triple-stranded europium(iii) helicates Eu₂L₃(L′)₂ [L = 4,4′-bis(4,4,4-trifluoro-1,3-dioxobutyl)diphenyl sulphide; L′ = 1,10-phenanthroline (Phen) or R/S-2,2′-bis(diphenylphosphinyl)-1,1′-binaphthyl (R/S-BINAPO)] were synthesized in order to investigate the effects of ancillary ligands on controlling the stereoselective self-assembly of lanthanide helicates. X-ray single crystal structure analysis showed that Eu₂L₃(Phen)₂ crystalized in an achiral space group P1̄ with the equivalent amount of P and M helicates in one single cell. The isolated Eu₂L₃(S-BINAPO)₂ and Eu₂L₃(R-BINAPO)₂ were verified to be enantiopure by ¹H, ¹⁹F, ³¹P NMR and DOSY NMR analyses. Additionally, the mirror-image CD spectra also demonstrated the successful syntheses of the enantiomers and the presence of an effective chirality transformation from BINAPO to achiral L. Furthermore, the perfect mirror-image circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) spectra of Eu₂L₃(S-BINAPO)₂ and Eu₂L₃(R-BINAPO)₂ indicated the existence of the excited state chirality of the Eu³⁺ center associated with |g_lum| values reaching 0.112. In addition, the photophysical properties of three helicates were also discussed.

Chiral ancillary ligands (R/S-BINAPO) modulated the stereoselective self-assembly of lanthanide helicates, which presented strong CPL with |g_lum| values up to 0.112 and high luminescence quantum yield up to 34%.

Recent Advances of Near-Infrared (NIR) Emissive Metal Complexes Bridged by Ligands with N- and/or O-Donor Sites

Near-infrared (NIR) emissive metal complexes have shown potential applications in optical communication, chemosensors, bioimaging, and laser and organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) due to their structural tunability and luminescence stability. Among them, complexes with bridging ligands that exhibit unique emission behavior have attracted extensive interests in recent years. The target performance can be easily achieved by NIR light-emitting metal complexes with bridging ligands through molecular structure design. In this review, the luminescence mechanism and design strategies of NIR luminescent metal complexes with bridging ligands are described firstly, and then summarize the recent advance of NIR luminescent metal complexes with bridging ligands in the fields of electroluminescence and biosensing/bioimaging. Finally, the development trend of NIR luminescent metal complexes with bridging ligands are proposed, which shows an attractive prospect in the field of photophysical and photochemical materials.

Enhanced near-infrared luminescence in Ln2Cd2 (Ln = Nd, Yb) heterotetranuclear complexes

Due to the effect of the combination of the rigid structure and synergistic interactions of two ligands on energy transfer, the Cd–Ln complexes show excellent NIR luminescence properties with the QYs reaching 0.34% for Nd³⁺ and 2.13% for Yb³⁺.

Development, characterisation and in vitro evaluation of lanthanide-based FPR2/ALX-targeted imaging probes

We report the design, preparation and characterisation of three small-molecule, Formyl Peptide Receptor (FPR)-targeted lanthanide complexes (Tb·14, Eu·14 and Gd·14). Long-lived, metal-based emission was observed from the terbium complex (τH2O = 1.9 ms), whereas only negligible lanthanide signals were detected in the europium analogue. Ligand-centred emission was investigated using Gd·14 at room temperature and 77 K, leading to the postulation that metal emission may be sensitised via a ligand-based charge transfer state of the targeting Quin C1 unit. Comparatively high longitudinal relaxivity values (r1) for octadentate metal complexes of Gd·14 were determined (6.9 mM-1 s-1 at 400 MHz and 294 K), which could be a result of a relative increase in twisted square antiprism (TSAP) isomer prevalence compared to typical DOTA constructs (as evidenced by NMR spectroscopy). In vitro validation of concentration responses of Tb·14via three key neutrophil functional assays demonstrated that the inflammatory responses of neutrophils (i.e. chemotaxis, transmigration and granular release) remained unchanged in the presence of specific concentrations of the compound. Using a time-resolved microscopy set-up we were able to observe binding of the Tb·14 probe to stimulated human neutrophils around the cell periphery, while in the same experiment with un-activated neutrophils, no metal-based signals were detected. Our results demonstrate the utility of Tb·14 for time-resolved microscopy with lifetimes several orders of magnitude longer than autofluorescent signals and a preferential uptake in stimulated neutrophils.

Lanthanide-Oligomeric Brush Films: From Luminescence Properties to Structure Resolution

Lanthanide (Ln) based luminescent materials are experiencing an increasing interest in their applications in several fields. In this study, we report a series of new lanthanide-oligomeric brush films, supported on quartz substrates and prepared using a layer-by-layer method (LbL). Oligomeric brush films are composed of small oligomers from our previously reported coordination polymers [x-EuL] and [x-TbL] (with x = 1, 3, and 5 generations of Ln complexes), which are grown perpendicularly from a carboxylate self-assembled monolayer. Oligomers composed of our previously described helical lanthanide complex LnL (Ln: Eu and Tb) as a luminescent moiety and benzene-1,4-dicarboxylate acid (bdc) used as a linker. Mixed films having the fifth-generation Ln complexes composed of equimolar mixture of Eu and Tb ions were prepared. Oligomeric brush films are highly transparent and exhibited a colored emission under UV irradiation. Pure Ln (Eu or Tb) films showed a strong luminescence from the Ln ions. Their luminescent properties depended on the number of lanthanide layers in the films composed of the first to third generations of lanthanide complexes. Then, the increase of the complex layers induced no difference in the luminescent properties. An energy transfer from Tb to Eu ions in the mixed films indicated a short distance between lanthanide ions of a fifth layer. The structural analysis together with the observed luminescent properties and some previous studies allowed to clarify the disposition of the oligomers in the films.

BODIPY-functionalized 1,10-phenanthroline as a long wavelength sensitizer for near-infrared emission of the ytterbium(iii) ion

Two BODIPY (4,4-difluoro-4-bora-3a,4a-diaza-s-indacene) moieties were chemically appended to the 4,7-positions of 1,10-phenanhtroline resulting in two new ligands (BODIPY-Phen and 4I-BODIPY-Phen) with strong absorption at 507 nm and 540 nm, respectively. BODIPY-Phen emits fluorescence strongly centered at 507 nm, whereas the fluorescence of 4I-BODIPY-Phen was completely quenched due to the introduction of four I atoms at its 2,6 positions. The two ligands reacted readily with tris(1,1,1,5,5,5-hexafluoro-2,4-pentanedionate) ytterbium(iii) dihydrate through substitution reactions forming eight-coordinate complexes that emit strongly at 976 nm upon excitation at their absorption maximal positions. Both complexes exhibited a lifetime of ∼11 μs in dichloromethane at room temperature.
