Rhodium(i) complexes with carborane-substituted P,N ligands: investigations of electronic structure and dynamic behaviour

Carboranylphosphines: B9-Substituted Derivatives with Enhanced Reactivity for the Anchoring to Dendrimers

Several ortho-carboranes bearing a phenoxy or a phenylamino group in the B9 position were prepared employing various protection and deprotection strategies. Following established protocols, dendritic compounds were synthesized from a hexachlorocyclotriphosphazene or thiophosphoryl chloride core, and possible anchoring options for the B9-substituted ortho-carboranes were investigated experimentally and theoretically (DFT). Furthermore, 1- or 1,2-phosphanyl-substituted carborane derivatives were obtained. The resulting diethyl-, diisopropyl-, di-tert-butyl-, diphenyl- or diethoxyphosphines bearing a tunable ortho-carborane moiety are intriguing ligands for future applications in homogeneous catalysis or the medicinal sector.

Facile Synthesis of Enantiomerically Pure P-Chiral 1-Alkoxy-2,3-dihydrophospholes via Nucleophilic P-N Bond Cleavage of a 1-Phospha-2-azanorbornene

The reactive P-N bond in a racemic mixture of endo-1-phospha-2-azanorbornene (PAN) (RP /SP )-endo-1 is readily cleaved with enantiomerically pure lithium alkoxides followed by protonation to afford diastereomeric mixtures of P-chiral 1-alkoxy-2,3-dihydrophosphole derivatives. The isolation of these compounds is rather challenging due to the reversibility of the reaction (elimination of alcohols). However, methylation of the sulfonamide moiety of the intermediate lithium salts and sulfur protection of the phosphorus atom prevent the elimination reaction. The resulting air-stable P-chiral diastereomeric 1-alkoxy-2,3-dihydrophosphole sulfide mixtures can be readily isolated and fully characterized. The diastereomers can be separated by crystallization. The 1-alkoxy-2,3-dihydrophosphole sulfides are readily reduced with Raney nickel to afford phosphorus(III) P-stereogenic 1-alkoxy-2,3-dihydrophospholes with potential use in asymmetric homogeneous transition metal catalysis.

Rh(I) Complexes in Catalysis: A Five-Year Trend

Rhodium is one of the most used metals in catalysis both in laboratory reactions and industrial processes. Despite the extensive exploration on "classical" ligands carried out during the past decades in the field of rhodium-catalyzed reactions, such as phosphines, and other common types of ligands including N-heterocyclic carbenes, ferrocenes, cyclopentadienyl anion and pentamethylcyclopentadienyl derivatives, etc., there is still lively research activity on this topic, with considerable efforts being made toward the synthesis of new preformed rhodium catalysts that can be both efficient and selective. Although the "golden age" of homogeneous catalysis might seem over, there is still plenty of room for improvement, especially from the point of view of a more sustainable chemistry. In this review, temporally restricted to the analysis of literature during the past five years (2015-2020), the latest findings and trends in the synthesis and applications of Rh(I) complexes to catalysis will be presented. From the analysis of the most recent literature, it seems clear that rhodium-catalyzed processes still represent a stimulating challenge for the metalloorganic chemist that is far from being over.

Direct synthesis of an anionic 13-vertex closo-cobaltacarborane cluster

Reaction of 1,2-bis(diphenylphosphino)-ortho-carborane (L) with [K(thf){(^MesBIAN)Co(η⁴-cod)}] (1, ^MesBIAN = bis(mesityliminoace-naphthene)diimine, cod = 1,5-cyclooctadiene) affords an anionic 13-vertex closo-cobaltacarborane cluster (2) in one step. The mechanism of this transformation has been studied by experimental and quantum chemical techniques, which suggest that a series of outer-sphere electron transfer and isomerisation processes occurs. This work shows that low-valent metalate anions are promising reagents for the synthesis of anionic metallacarborane clusters.
