Rapid Synthesis of Nickel Hydroxide/Pt-Based Alloy Heterointerface for Hydrogen Evolution in Full pH Range

The huge application potential of nanoelectrocatalysts can become available only under the condition of scalable and reproducible preparation of nanomaterials (NMs). It is easily overlooked that most of the preparation methods for efficient platinum (Pt)-based electrocatalysts are complicated in process and time-/energy-consuming, which is not conducive to scalable and sustainable production. Herein, we propose a rapid and facile method to in situ construct a heterointerface between nickel hydroxide (Ni(OH)2) and NiPt alloy, in which the preparation steps are easy-to-operate and can be finished in 1 h. Furthermore, the ensemble effect between the Ni(OH)2 substrate and NiPt active sites benefits the water dissociation process in nonacidic conditions, while the electronic effect in NiPt contributes to the downshifted d-band center of Pt and the proper Gibbs free energy of hydrogen species. As a result, the well-designed and quickly constructed Ni(OH)2-Ni3Pt heterointerfaces reveal lower overpotentials for HER compared with most reported Pt-based and commercial Pt/C catalysts in nonacidic conditions. This study is expected to provide useful reference information for the development of facile and robust methods for the preparation of more efficient Pt-based electrocatalysts.

Oxygen-Bridged Long-Range Dual Sites Boost Ethanol Electrooxidation by Facilitating C-C Bond Cleavage

Optimizing the interatomic distance of dual sites to realize C-C bond breaking of ethanol is critical for the commercialization of direct ethanol fuel cells. Herein, the concept of holding long-range dual sites is proposed to weaken the reaction barrier of C-C cleavage during the ethanol oxidation reaction (EOR). The obtained long-range Rh-O-Pt dual sites achieve a high current density of 7.43 mA/cm2 toward EOR, which is 13.3 times that of Pt/C, as well as remarkable stability. Electrochemical in situ Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy indicates that long-range Rh-O-Pt dual sites can increase the selectivity of C1 products and suppress the generation of a CO intermediate. Theoretical calculations further disclose that redistribution of the surface-localized electron around Rh-O-Pt can promote direct oxidation of -OH, accelerating C-C bond cleavage. This work provides a promising strategy for designing oxygen-bridged long-range dual sites to tune the activity and selectivity of complicated catalytic reactions.

Efficient oxygen evolution reaction from iron-molybdenum nitride/molybdenum oxide heterostructured composites

Integrating various active sites into a multi-component system might significantly enhance the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) performance. Herein, the as-prepared iron-molybdenum nitride/molybdenum oxide (Fe-Mo5N6/MoO3-550) composite electrocatalyst under optimum conditions demonstrates excellent electrocatalytic performance toward OER and reaches current densities of 10 and 20 mA cm-2 at overpotentials of 201 and 216 mV, respectively. The OER performance of Fe-Mo5N6/MoO3-550 exceeds that of most previously reported electrocatalytic systems. The significant improvement in the OER performance is ascribed to a combination of mechanisms. The strong electronic interactions among the Fe, Mo5N6 and MoO3 species can accelerate the OER reaction kinetics, which contributes to the OER performance. This work provides new insights into the construction of efficient electrocatalytic materials with inexpensive metals.

Toward Electrocatalytic Methanol Oxidation Reaction: Longstanding Debates and Emerging Catalysts

The study of direct methanol fuel cells (DMFCs) has lasted around 70 years, since the first investigation in the early 1950s. Though enormous effort has been devoted in this field, it is still far from commercialization. The methanol oxidation reaction (MOR), as a semi-reaction of DMFCs, is the bottleneck reaction that restricts the overall performance of DMFCs. To date, there has been intense debate on the complex six-electron reaction, but barely any reviews have systematically discussed this topic. To this end, the controversies and progress regarding the electrocatalytic mechanisms, performance evaluations as well as the design science toward MOR electrocatalysts are summarized. This review also provides a comprehensive introduction on the recent development of emerging MOR electrocatalysts with a focus on the innovation of the alloy, core-shell structure, heterostructure, and single-atom catalysts. Finally, perspectives on the future outlook toward study of the mechanisms and design of electrocatalysts are provided.

Core-shell Pd-P@Pt-Ni nanoparticles with enhanced activity and durability as anode electrocatalyst for methanol oxidation reaction

Pd–P@Pt–Ni core–shell nanoparticles, which consisted of a Pd–P alloy as a core and Pt–Ni thin layer as a shell, were explored as electrocatalysts for methanol oxidation reaction. The crystallographic information and the electronic properties were fully investigated by X-ray diffraction and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. In the methanol electrooxidation reaction, the particles showed high catalytic activity and strong resistance to the poisoning carbonaceous species in comparison with those of commercial Pt/C and the as-prepared Pt/C catalysts. The excellent durability was demonstrated by electrochemically active surface area loss and chronoamperometric measurements. These results would be due to the enhanced catalytic properties of Pt by the double synergistic effects from the core part and the nickel species in the shell part.

The Pd–P@Pt–Ni core–shell nanoparticles consist of an amorphous core and a low-crystalline shell. They exhibit the excellent catalytic properties in MOR owing to the double synergistic effects from the core and the nickel species in the shell.

Efficient polyalcohol oxidation electrocatalysts enabled by PtM (M = Fe, Co, and Ni) nanocubes surrounded by (200) crystal facets

Due to the high-density (200) crystal planes and abundant active sites, cubic platinum nanomaterials have become outstanding electrocatalysts in promoting fuel cell reactions. However, because of the fact that the facet-controlled synthesis is difficult, it is still a grand challenge to synthesize a sequence of Pt-based nanocubes via a universal method. Herein, we report a general and simple eco-friendly solvothermal method to prepare (200)-enclosed PtM nanocubes. Different from the other nanomaterials, nanocubes are conducive to mass transfer. Moreover, the synergistic and electronic effects between M and Pt are profitable to improve the utilization of precious metals. We used (200)-encapsulated nanocrystals to evaluate their electrocatalytic performance towards glycerol and ethylene glycol oxidation reactions in an alkaline medium. In particular, Pt4Co nanocubes showed superior mass activities in glycerol and ethylene glycol oxidation reactions, which are 6.2- and 5.0-fold higher than those obtained for commercial Pt/C catalysts, respectively. Meanwhile, Pt4M catalysts manifested excellent stability in the endurance test, which is attributed to the alloying effect promoting the electrooxidation of intermediates. Our study provides an ideal method for the construction of Pt-based bimetallic nanocubes, which can be used for anode reactions of polyol fuel cells and beyond.
