Two Heterometallic Nanoclusters [DyIII4NiII8] and [DyIII10MnIII4MnII2]: Structure, Assembly Mechanism, and Magnetic Properties

A full understanding of the assembly mechanisms of coordination complexes is of great importance for a directional synthesis under control. We thus explored here the formation mechanisms of the two new heterometallic nanoclusters [Dy^III₄Ni^II₈(μ₃-OH)₈(L)₈(OAc)₄(H₂O)₄]·3.25EtOH·4CH₃CN (1) and [Dy^III₁₀Mn^III₄Mn^II₂O₄(OH)₁₂(OAc)₁₆(L)₄(HL)₂(EtOH)₂]·2EtOH·2CH₃CN·2H₂O (2) with different cubane-based squarelike ring structures, which were obtained from the reactions of 4-bromo-2-[(2-hydroxypropylimino)methyl]phenol (H₂L) with Dy(NO)₃·6H₂O and the transition metal salt Ni(OAc)₂·4H₂O or Mn(OAc)₂·4H₂O. The high-resolution electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (HRESI-MS) tests showed that the skeletons of clusters 1 and 2 have a high stability under the measurement conditions for HRESI-MS. The intermediates formed in the reaction courses of clusters 1 and 2 were tracked using time-dependent HRESI-MS, which helped to determine the proposed hierarchical assembly mechanisms for 1 (H₂L → NiL → Ni₂L₂ → Ni₃L₄ → Ni₄L₄ → DyNi₄L₅ → Dy₂Ni₆L₆ → Dy₃Ni₆L₆ → Dy₃Ni₇L₇ → Dy₄Ni₈L₈) and 2 (H₂L → MnL → DyMnL → DyMn₂L → Dy₂Mn₂L_x → Dy₈Mn₂L₂ → Dy₁₀Mn₂L₂ → Dy₁₀Mn₆L_x and H₂L → DyL → Dy₄L₂ → Dy₆L₂ → Dy₈Mn₂L₂ → Dy₁₀Mn₂L₂ → Dy₁₀Mn₆L_x). This is one of the rare examples of investigating the assembly mechanisms of 3d-4f heterometallic clusters. Magnetic studies indicated that the title complexes both show slow magnetic relaxation behaviors and cluster 1 is a field-induced single-molecule magnet.

3d/4f Sandwich Complex Based on Metallacrowns

A novel lanthanide double-decker complex with nickel metallacrowns (MCs) as coordinating ligands has been synthesized. In the 3d/4f metallacrown complex Tb^III[12-MC_Ni^IIN(shi)-4]₂, the central lanthanide ion is sandwiched between two [12-MC-4] units, forming an almost ideal square-antiprismatic coordination sphere. The resulting zenithal angles at the central lanthanide ion are smaller than those for previously reported sandwich compounds. Magnetic measurements reveal an energy barrier of 346 K under zero field and up to 585 K under 3200 Oe, the highest reported for metallacrowns with D_4d symmetry.

An investigation into the magnetic interactions in a series of Dy2 single-molecule magnets

Three di-nuclear Dy^III complexes [Dy₂(H₂L)₂(tfa)]·Cl·3DMF (1), [Dy₂(H₂L)₂(MeO)(SCN)]·MeOH (2) and [Dy₂(H₂L)₂(MeOH)Cl]·Cl·2MeOH (3) were synthesized and structurally and magnetically characterized. The Dy1/Dy2 centers in these complexes are all nine-coordinate with spherical capped square antiprism (local C₄v symmetry) environments. All complexes display single-molecule magnet (SMM) behavior under zero applied dc field with their properties dependent on the nature of the magnetic interactions between the Dy^III ions. Ab initio calculations substantiate that all Dy^III ions show a weakly axial crystal-field environment with the exception of one of the Dy^III ions in complex 2. The ground Kramers doublets show modest amounts of quantum tunneling of magnetization that gets blocked by the interaction between the Dy^III ions, leading to a thermally activated slow relaxation of magnetization. The interaction between the ions is ferromagnetic and mostly originates from the dipolar interaction. However, anti-ferromagnetic intermolecular interaction plays an important role and in the case of complex 2 it is sufficiently strong to mask the ferromagnetic intramolecular interaction.

Dinuclear Tb and Dy complexes supported by hybrid Schiff-base/calixarene ligands: synthesis, structures and magnetic properties

The synthesis of the new lanthanide complexes [HNEt3][Dy2(HL1)(L1)] (5), and [Ln2(L2)2] (Ln = TbIII (7), DyIII (8)) supported by the hybrid Schiff-base/calix[4]arene ligands H4L1 (25-[2-((2-methylphenol)imino)ethoxy]-26,27,28-trihydroxy-calix[4]arene) and H3L2 (25-[2-((2-methylpyridine)imino)ethoxy]-26,27,28-trihydroxy-calix[4]arene) are reported. Spectroscopic data (for 5) and X-ray crystallographic analysis (for 7·4MeCN, 8·4MeCN) reveal the presence of dimeric structures, featuring doubly-bridged NO4Ln(μ-O)2LnO4N (5) or N2O3Ln(μ-O)2LnO3N2 cores (7, 8) with seven-coordinated Ln3+ ions. The magnetic properties of polycrystalline samples of 5, 7 and 8 were studied by variable temperature dc and ac magnetic susceptibility measurements. The χ''(T) vs. T plots show no maxima in zero field, but the maxima can be detected under a 3 kOe dc field. The relaxation times τ obey the Arrhenius law above 5 K. Anisotropy barriers of ∼18 cm-1 (26 K) for 5 and ∼23 cm-1 (33 K) for 8 were determined.

Field-induced slow relaxation of magnetisation in two one-dimensional homometallic dysprosium(iii) complexes based on alpha- and beta-amino acids

Two one-dimensional dysprosium(iii) complexes based on α-glycine (gly) and β-alanine (β-ala) amino acids, with the formula {[Dy₂(gly)₆(H₂O)₄](ClO₄)₆·5H₂O}_n (1) and {[Dy₂(β-ala)₆(H₂O)₄](ClO₄)₆·H₂O}_n (2), have been synthesised and characterised structurally and magnetically. Both compounds crystallise in the triclinic system with the space group P1[combining macron]. In 1, two Dy^III ions are eight-coordinate and bound to six oxygen atoms from six gly ligands and two oxygen atoms from two water molecules, showing different geometries (bicapped trigonal prism and square antiprism). In 2, two Dy^III ions are nine-coordinate and bound to seven oxygen atoms from six β-ala ligands and two oxygen atoms from two water molecules in the same geometry (capped square antiprism). In the crystal packing of both compounds, cationic {[Dy₂(L)₆(H₂O)₄]⁶⁺}_n [L = α-glycine (1) and β-alanine (2)] chains, ClO₄^- anions, and water molecules generate a network connected through H-bonding interactions. The study of the magnetic properties of 1 and 2 through dc magnetic susceptibility measurements reveals different magnetic behaviour 1 and 2. In addition, ac magnetic susceptibility measurements show a field-induced slow relaxation of magnetisation for both compounds, pointing out that the single-molecule magnet (SMM) phenomenon occurs in both 1 and 2.

Tuning slow magnetic relaxation behaviour in a {Dy2}-based one-dimensional chain via crystal field perturbation

Two novel {Dy₂}-based one dimensional chain compounds {[Dy₂(H₃L)₄(OAc)₆]·2MeOH}_n (1) and {[Dy₂(H₃L)₄(OAc)₄(NCS)₂]·2MeOH}_n (2) (H₃L = 1,3-bis(2-hydroxynaphthalenemethyleneamino)-propan-2-ol) have been prepared under solvothermal conditions. Crystal structure analyses indicate that 1 and 2 feature similar 1D chain structures bearing dinuclear secondary building units. The difference between these two structures is that one chelated acetate ligand of Dy(iii) ion in 1 is replaced by one monodentate coordinated NCS⁻ ion in 2, leading to their different coordination numbers and geometry configurations to Dy(iii) ion. Magnetic properties indicate that 1 and 2 display slow magnetic relaxation behavior with an effective energy barrier of 16.44(2) K in 1 and 8.02(2) K in 2, respectively, which is maybe attributed to the subtle crystal field perturbation of Dy(iii) ions.

Two novel {Dy₂}-based one dimensional chain compounds with similar structures have been prepared and subtle crystal field of Dy(iii) ion can perturb their slow magnetic relaxation behaviors.

Magnetic Behavior of Luminescent Dinuclear Dysprosium and Terbium Complexes Derived from Phenoxyacetic Acid and 2,2’-Bipyridine

Two dinuclear lanthanide complexes [Dy2(L1)6(L2)2]·2EtOH (1) and [Tb2(L1)6(L2)2]·2EtOH (2) (HL1 = phenoxyacetic acid and L2 = 2,2’-bipyridine) were synthesized and the crystal structures were determined. In both complexes, the lanthanide centers are nine-coordinated and have a muffin geometry. Detailed magnetic study reveals the presence of field-induced single molecule magnet (SMM) behavior for complex 1, whereas complex 2 is non-SMM in nature. Further magnetic study with 1’, yttrium doped magnetically diluted sample of 1, disclosed the presence of Orbach and Raman relaxation processes with effective energy barrier, ∆E = 16.26 cm−1 and relaxation time, τo = 2.42 × 10−8 s. Luminescence spectra for complexes 1 and 2 in acetonitrile were studied which show characteristic emission peaks for DyIII and TbIII ions, respectively.
