Solvent-assisted structural conversion involving bimetallic complexes based on the tris(oxalato)ferrate(iii) unit with the green → blue → red crystal color sequence

Light-Induced Intramolecular Electron Transfer in a 1D [CuFe] Coordination Polymer Containing the [Fe(C2O4)3]3- Core

A one-dimensional (1D) ladder-like coordination polymer {NH4[{Cu(bpy)}2(C2O4)Fe(C2O4)3]·H2O}n (1; bpy = 2,2'-bipyridine) containing [Cu(bpy)(μ-C2O4)Cu(bpy)]2+ cationic units linked by oxalate groups of [Fe(C2O4)3]3- building blocks was investigated as a new type of photoactive solid-state system. It exhibits a photocoloration effect when exposed to direct sunlight or UV/vis irradiation. The photochromic properties and mechanism were studied by powder and single-crystal X-ray diffraction, UV/vis diffuse reflectance, IR and electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy, magnetization and impedance measurements, and density functional theory calculations. The process of photochromism involves simultaneous intramolecular electron transfers from the oxalate ligand to Fe(III) and to [CuII(bpy)(μ-C2O4)CuII(bpy)]2+, leading to the reduction of the metal centers to the electronic states Fe(II) and Cu(I), accompanied by the release of gaseous CO2.

New Dinuclear Macrocyclic Copper(II) Complexes as Potentially Fluorescent and Magnetic Materials

Two dinuclear copper(II) complexes with macrocyclic Schiff bases K1 and K2 were prepared by the template reaction of (R)-(+)-1,1'-binaphthalene-2,2'-diamine and 2-hydroxy-5-methyl-1,3-benzenedicarboxaldehyde K1, or 4-tert-butyl-2,6-diformylphenol K2 with copper(II) chloride dihydrate. The compounds were characterized by spectroscopic methods. X-ray crystal structure determination and DFT calculations confirmed their geometry in solution and in the solid phase. Moreover, intermolecular interactions in the crystal structure of K2 were analyzed using 3D Hirshfeld surfaces and the related 2D fingerprint plots. The magnetic study revealed very strong antiferromagnetic Cu^II-Cu^II exchange interactions, which were supported by magneto-structural correlation and DFT calculations conducted within a broken symmetry (BS) framework. Complexes K1 and K2 exhibited luminescent properties that may be of great importance in the search for new OLEDs. Both K1 and K2 complexes showed emissions in the range of 392-424 nm in solutions at various polarities. Thin materials of the studied compounds were deposited on Si(111) by the spin-coating method or by thermal vapor deposition and studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM/EDS), atomic force microscopy (AFM), and fluorescence spectroscopy. The thermally deposited K1 and K2 materials showed high fluorescence intensity in the range of 318-531 nm for K1/Si and 326-472 nm for the K2/Si material, indicating that they could be used in optical devices.

Structural Diversity, XAS and Magnetism of Copper(II)-Nickel(II) Heterometallic Complexes Based on the [Ni(NCS)6]4- Unit

The new heterometallic compounds, [{Cu(pn)₂}₂Ni(NCS)₆]_n·2nH₂O (1), [{Cu^II(trien)}₂Ni(NCS)₆Cu^I(NCS)]_n (2) and [Cu(tren)(NCS)]₄[Ni(NCS)₆] (3) (pn = 1,2-diaminopropane, trien = triethylenetetramine and tren = tris(2-aminoethylo)amine), were obtained and characterized by X-ray analysis, IR spectra, XAS and magnetic measurements. Compounds 1, 2 and 3 show the structural diversity of 2D, 1D and 0D compounds, respectively. Depending on the polyamine used, different coordination polyhedron for Cu(II) was found, i.e., distorted octahedral (1), square pyramidal (2) and trigonal bipyramidal (3), whereas coordination polyhedron for nickel(II) was always octahedral. It provides an approach for tailoring magnetic properties by proper selection of auxiliary ligands determining the topology. In 1, thiocyanate ligands form bridges between the copper and nickel ions, creating 2D layers of sql topology with weak ferromagnetic interactions. Compound 2 is a mixed-valence copper coordination polymer and shows the rare ladder topology of 1D chains decorated with [Cu^II(tren)]²⁺ antennas as the side chains attached to nickel(II). The ladder rails are formed by alternately arranged Ni(II) and Cu(I) ions connected by N2 thiocyanate anions and rungs made by N3 thiocyanate. For the Cu(I) ions, the tetrahedral thiocyanate environment mixed N/S donor atoms was found, confirming significant coordination spheres rearrangement occurring at the copper precursor together with the reduction in some Cu(II) to Cu(I). Such topology enables significant simplification of the magnetic properties modeling by assuming magnetic coupling inside {Ni^IICu^II₂} trinuclear units separated by diamagnetic [Cu(NCS)(SCN)₃]^3- linkers. Compound 3 shows three discrete mononuclear units connected by N-H…N and N-H…S hydrogen bonds. Analysis of XAS proves that the average ligand character and the covalency of the unoccupied metal d-based orbitals for copper(II) and nickel(II) increase in the following order: 1 → 2 → 3. In 1 and 2, a weak ferromagnetic coupling between copper(II) and nickel(II) was found, but in 2, additional and stronger antiferromagnetic interaction between copper(II) ions prevailed. Compound 3, as an ionic pair, shows, as expected, a spin-only magnetic moment.

Sorption and Magnetic Properties of Oxalato-Based Trimetallic Open Framework Stabilized by Charge-Assisted Hydrogen Bonds

We report a new structure of {[Co(bpy)₂(ox)][{Cu₂(bpy)₂(ox)}Fe(ox)₃]}_n·8.5nH₂O NCU-1 presenting a rare ladder topology among oxalate-based coordination polymers with anionic chains composed of alternately arranged [Cu₂(bpy)₂(ox)]²⁺ and [Fe(ox)₃]³⁻ moieties. Along the a axis, they are separated by Co(III) units to give porous material with voids of 963.7 ų (16.9% of cell volume). The stability of this structure is assured by a network of stacking interactions and charge-assisted C-H…O hydrogen bonds formed between adjacent chains, adjacent cobalt(III) units, and alternately arranged cobalt(III) and chain motifs. The soaking experiment with acetonitrile and bromobenzene showed that water molecules (8.5 water molecules dispersed over 15 positions) are bonded tightly, despite partial occupancy. Water adsorption experiments are described by a D’arcy and Watt model being the sum of Langmuir and Dubinin–Serpinski isotherms. The amount of primary adsorption sites calculated from this model is equal 8.2 mol H₂O/mol, being very close to the value obtained from the XRD experiments and indicates that water was adsorbed mainly on the primary sites. The antiferromagnetic properties could be only approximately described with the simple Cu^II-ox-Cu^II dimer using H = −J·S₁·S₂, thus, considering non-trivial topology of the whole Cu-Fe chain, we developed our own general approach, based on the semiclassical model (SC) and molecular field (MF) model, to describe precisely the magnetic superexchange interactions in NCU-1. We established that Cu(II)-Cu(II) coupling dominates over multiple Cu(II)-Fe(III) interactions, with J_CuCu = −275(29) and J_CuFe = −3.8(1.6) cm⁻¹ and discussed the obtained values against the literature data.

On/off porosity switching and post-assembly modifications of Cu4L4 metal-organic polyhedra

Synthetic porous materials composed of metal–organic polyhedra (MOPs) have found application in topical areas such as gas storage, separation and catalysis. Control over their physical properties (e.g. porosity) has typically been achieved through ligand design or judicious choice of metal ions. Here, we demonstrate pore-size control and on/off porosity in Cu₄L₄ MOPs by exploiting their structural non-rigidity. We report an aldehyde-functionalised MOP (1) that can be isolated in five distinct solvatomorphs, each exhibiting different structural flexibility. When soaked in MeOH, two of these solvatomorphs undergo a rapid transformation to a thermodynamically favoured phase, whilst in acetone they template the crystallisation of an entirely new crystal packing. We support these findings by single and powder X-ray diffraction and rationalise the observed phase transformations by lattice energy calculations. Of the five solvatomorphs, three can be obtained as solvent-exchanged pseudo-polymorphs with distinct porosities in their activated form (SA_BET = 35–455 m² g⁻¹). Further control over the crystal packing of MOPs is achieved through covalent post-assembly modifications, which promote the crystallisation of isoreticular 2-D sheet-like structures.

The crystal packing and porosity of Cu₄L₄ metal–organic polyhedra can be controlled by exploiting their rich solvatomorphism, structural non-rigidity and amenability to covalent post-assembly modifications.

Structural conversion of three copper(ii) complexes with snapshot observations based on the different crystal colours and morphology

Three novel Cu(ii) complexes [Cu₂(L)₂(MeOH)₂] (1), [Cu₂(L)₂(H₂O)₂] (2) and [CuL(H₂O)] (3) (L = (E)-2-((2-hydroxy-4-methoxybenzylidene)amino)acetic acid) have been obtained in different time scales of reaction processing. Complexes 1 and 2 are kinetically controlled products and 3 is a thermodynamically stable product. Single crystal X-ray diffraction analyses revealed that 1 and 2 are binuclear complexes except for different coordination solvents. 3 is a mononuclear complex. Complex 1 is mainly obtained in methanol solution, while 2 and 3 are stable in aqueous solvents. Based on the understanding of crystal structures of the three complexes, reversibly transforming crystal 2 to crystal 1 at room temperature has been realised, which has been confirmed by the change of colours and morphology measured by SEM. The research work is very important for controllable synthesis of coordination complexes.
