Innovations in metal-organic frameworks (MOFs): Pioneering adsorption approaches for persistent organic pollutant (POP) removal

Adsorption is a promising way to remove persistent organic pollutants (POPs), a major environmental issue. With their high porosity and vast surface areas, MOFs are suited for POP removal due to their excellent adsorption capabilities. This review addresses the intricate principles of MOF-mediated adsorption and helps to future attempts to mitigate organic water pollution. This review examines the complicated concepts of MOF-mediated adsorption, including MOF synthesis methodologies, adsorption mechanisms, and material tunability and adaptability. MOFs' ability to adsorb POPs via electrostatic forces, acid-base interactions, hydrogen bonds, and pi-pi interactions is elaborated. This review demonstrates its versatility in eliminating many types of contaminants. Functionalizing, adding metal nanoparticles, or changing MOFs after they are created can improve their performance and remove contaminants. This paper also discusses MOF-based pollutant removal issues and future prospects, including adsorption capacity, selectivity, scale-up for practical application, stability, and recovery. These obstacles can be overcome by rationally designing MOFs, developing composite materials, and improving material production and characterization. Overall, MOF technology research and innovation hold considerable promise for environmental pollution solutions and sustainable remediation. Desorption and regeneration in MOFs are also included in the review, along with methods for improving pollutant removal efficiency and sustainability. Case studies of effective MOF regeneration and scaling up for practical deployment are discussed, along with future ideas for addressing these hurdles.

The Impact of Functionality and Porous System of Nanostructured Carriers Based on Metal–Organic Frameworks of UiO-66-Type on Catalytic Performance of Embedded Au Nanoparticles in Hydroamination Reaction

New methods for the preparation of metal–organic frameworks UiO-66 and NH2-UiO-66 with a hierarchical porous structure were developed using the MW-assisted technique under atmospheric pressure. The synthesized nanostructured meso-UiO-66 and meso-NH2-UiO-66 matrices were utilized as Au nanoparticle carriers. The resulting Au@meso-UiO-66 and Au@NH2-UiO-66 nanohybrids were studied in the reaction of phenylacetylene hydroamination with aniline into imine ([phenyl-(1-phenylethylydene)amine]) for the first time. Their catalytic behavior is significantly determined by a combination of factors, such as a small crystal size, micro–mesoporous structure, and functionality of the UiO-66 and NH2-UiO-66 carriers, as well as a high dispersion of embedded gold nanoparticles. The Au@meso-UiO-66 and Au@NH2-UiO-66 nanocatalysts demonstrate high activities (TOF), with conversion and selectivity values over 90. This excellent catalytic performance is comparable or even better than that demonstrated by heterogeneous systems based on conventional inorganic and inorganic supports known from the literature.

Metal-Organic Frameworks as Potential Agents for Extraction and Delivery of Pesticides and Agrochemicals

Pesticide contamination is a global issue, affecting nearly 44% of the global farming population, and disproportionately affecting farmers and agricultural workers in developing countries. Despite this, global pesticide usage is on the rise, with the growing demand of global food production with increasing population. Different types of porous materials, such as carbon and zeolites, have been explored for the remediation of pesticides from the environment. However, there are some limitations with these materials, especially due to lack of functional groups and relatively modest surface areas. In this regard, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) provide us with a better alternative to conventionally used porous materials due to their versatile and highly porous structure. Recently, a number of MOFs have been studied for the extraction of pesticides from the environment as well as for targeted and controlled release of agrochemicals. Different types of pesticides and conditions have been investigated, and MOFs have proved their potential in agricultural applications. In this review, the latest studies on delivery and extraction of pesticides using MOFs are systematically reviewed, along with some recent studies on greener ways of pest control through the slow release of chemical compounds from MOF composites. Finally, we present our insights into the key issues concerning the development and translational applications of using MOFs for targeted delivery and pesticide control.

Efficient removal of 2,4-D from solution using a novel antibacterial adsorbent based on tiger nut residues: adsorption and antibacterial study

We engineered a tiger nut residue (TNR, a low-cost agricultural waste material) through a facile and simple process to take advantage of the introduced functional groups (cetylpyridinium chloride, CPC) in the removal of 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) in batch mode and further investigated its impingement on bacterial growth in a yeast-dextrose broth. The surface characterizations of the adsorbent were achieved through Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller method (BET), X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The batch adsorption studies revealed that solution pH, adsorbent dose, temperature, and salt affected the adsorptive capacity of TNR-CPC. The equilibrium data were best fitted by Langmuir isotherm model with a maximum monolayer adsorption capacity of 90.2 mg g^-1 at 318 K and pH 3. Pseudo-second-order model best fitted the kinetics data for the adsorption process. Physisorption largely mediated the adsorption system with spontaneity and a shift in entropy of the aqueous solid-solute interface reflecting decreased randomness with an exothermic character. TNR-CPC demonstrated a good reusability potential making it highly economical and compares well with other adsorbents for decontamination of 2,4-D. The adsorption of 2,4-D proceeded through a probable trio-mechanism; electrostatic attraction between the carboxylate anion of 2,4-D and the pyridinium cation of TNR-CPC, hydrogen bonding between the hydroxyl (-OH) group inherent in the TNR and the carboxyl groups in 2,4-D and a triggered π-π stacking between the benzene structures in the adsorbate and the adsorbent. TNR-CPC reported about 99% inhibition rate against both gram-positive S. aureus and gram-negative E. coli. It would be appropriate to investigate the potential of TNR-CPC as a potential replacement to the metal oxides used in wastewater treatment for antibacterial capabilities, and its effects against airborne bacteria could also be of interest.

A MIL-53(Al)/CS/PEO columnar foam was fabricated for the determination of estrogens in larger-volume environmental water samples by VA-SPE and HPLC-FLD.

Modern Carbon-Based Materials for Adsorptive Removal of Organic and Inorganic Pollutants from Water and Wastewater

Currently, a serious threat for living organisms and human life in particular, is water contamination with persistent organic and inorganic pollutants. To date, several techniques have been adopted to remove/treat organics and toxic contaminants. Adsorption is one of the most effective and economical methods for this purpose. Generally, porous materials are considered as appropriate adsorbents for water purification. Conventional adsorbents such as activated carbons have a limited possibility of surface modification (texture and functionality), and their adsorption capacity is difficult to control. Therefore, despite the significant progress achieved in the development of the systems for water remediation, there is still a need for novel adsorptive materials with tunable functional characteristics. This review addresses the new trends in the development of new adsorbent materials. Herein, modern carbon-based materials, such as graphene, oxidized carbon, carbon nanotubes, biomass-derived carbonaceous matrices-biochars as well as their composites with metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and MOF-derived highly-ordered carbons are considered as advanced adsorbents for removal of hazardous organics from drinking water, process water, and leachate. The review is focused on the preparation and modification of these next-generation carbon-based adsorbents and analysis of their adsorption performance including possible adsorption mechanisms. Simultaneously, some weak points of modern carbon-based adsorbents are analyzed as well as the routes to conquer them. For instance, for removal of large quantities of pollutants, the combination of adsorption and other methods, like sedimentation may be recommended. A number of efficient strategies for further enhancing the adsorption performance of the carbon-based adsorbents, in particular, integrating approaches and further rational functionalization, including composing these adsorbents (of two or even three types) can be recommended. The cost reduction and efficient regeneration must also be in the focus of future research endeavors. The targeted optimization of the discussed carbon-based adsorbents associated with detailed studies of the adsorption process, especially, for multicomponent adsorbate solution, will pave a bright avenue for efficient water remediation.

Design of Metal-Organic Polymers MIL-53(M3+): Preparation and Characterization of MIL-53(Fe) and Graphene Oxide Composite

This article presents a crystal chemical analysis, generalization, and systematization of structural characteristics of metal-organic polymers MIL-53(M3+) with M = Al, Cr, Ga, and Fe. The division of the MIL-53(M3+) structures into a morphotropic series was performed, which made it possible to predict the formation of new compounds or solid solutions with the corresponding composition and structure. The change in the symmetry of MIL-53(M3+) and the causes of polymorphs formation are explained on the basis of crystal chemical rules. The efficiency of the revealed regularities in the structural characteristics of the MIL-53(M3+) phases were experimentally confirmed for MIL-53(Fe) and composite MIL-53(Fe)/GO (GO-graphene oxide) by several methods (powder X-ray, X-ray absorption, and photoelectron spectroscopy). For the first time, different coordination numbers (CN) (CNFe = 4.9 for MIL-53(Fe)—two types of coordination polyhedra with CNFe = 6 and CNFe = 4; CNFe = 4 for MIL-53 (Fe3+)/GO) and the formal charges (FC) of iron ions (variable FC of Fe (2+δ)+ in MIL-53(Fe3+) and Fe2+ in MIL-53(Fe3+)/GO) were found. These experimental data explain the higher photocatalytic activity of MIL-53(Fe3+)/GO in photo-Fenton reactions—RR195 decomposition.
