Enhancing the charge transport and luminescence properties of ethyl 4-[(E)-(2-hydroxy-4-methoxyphenyl)methyleneamino]benzoate through complexation: a DFT and TD-DFT study

Organic light emitting diode (OLED) and organic solar cell (OSC) properties of ethyl 4-[(E)-(2-hydroxy-4-methoxyphenyl)methyleneamino]benzoate (EMAB) and its Pt2+, Pd2+, Ni2+, Ir3+, Rh3+, and Zn2+ complexes have been theoretically studied herein. Geometry optimizations have been performed via the r2SCAN-3c composite method while single-point calculations have been carried out at the PBE0-D3(BJ)/def2-TZVP level of theory. Results have shown that complexation with selected metal ions improves hole and electron transfer rates in Pt[EMAB]2 and Rh[EMAB]2 +. Specifically, the hole transport rate of Pt[EMAB]2, (k ct(h) = 6.15 × 1014 s-1), is found to be 44 times greater than that of [EMAB], (k ct(h) = 1.42 × 1013 s-1), whereas electron transport rate of Pt[EMAB]2, (k ct(e) = 4.6 × 1013 s-1) is 4 times that of EMAB (k ct(e) = 1.1 × 1013 s-1). Charge mobility for holes and electrons are equal to 19.182 cm2 V-1 s-1 and 1.431 cm2 V-1 s-1 respectively for Pt[EMAB]2, and equal to 4.11 × 10-1 cm2 V-1 s-1 and 3.43 × 10-1 cm2 V-1 s-1 for EMAB respectively. These results show that, charge transport in EMAB can be tuned for better performance through complexation with transition metals such as Pt2+. OSC properties of the complexes were also studied by comparing their HOMO/LUMO energies with those of (6,6)-phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM) and poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT). It turned out that the energy gap of EMAB reduced significantly upon complexation from 2.904 eV to 0.56 eV in [Rh(EMAB)2]+ and to a lesser extent in the other complexes. The energy values of the HOMOs remained higher than those of PCBM while those of the LUMOs were found to be greater than that of P3HT with the exception of [Rh(EMAB)2]+. These findings show that the aforementioned species are good electron donors to PCBM. The open circuit voltage, V OC, of the compounds ranged between 0.705 × 10-19 V and 6.617 × 10-19 V, values that are good enough for practical usage in OSC applications. The UV-visible absorption spectra revealed absorption maxima well below 900 nm in all compounds, vital in the efficient functioning of solar cells. In general, this study has shown that platinoid complexation of EMAB can successfully modify both its OLED and OSC properties, making them better precursors in the electronic industry.

A novel Zn2+-coordination fluorescence probe for sensing HPPD inhibitors and its application in environmental media and biological imaging

Mesotrione, topramezone, tembotrione, and sulcotrione are four types of 4-hydroxyphenylpyruvate dioxidase (HPPD) inhibitor herbicides that are extensively employed in agricultural practices, but their usage also leads to environmental pollution and poses risks to human health. A probe (E)-1-((2-(pyridin-2-yl) hydrazineylidene) methyl) naphthalen-2-ol (CHMN) based on chelation enhancement (CHEF) effect synthesized. CHMN was first chelated with Zn2+ to form a probe system with green, which can be further used to detect mesotrione, topramezone, tembotrione and sulcotrione in complicated environment. CHMN-Zn2+ detection of four pesticides was accurate, with an excellent linear relationship between 0 and 100 μM. The detection limits were LODmesotrione = 7.79 μM, LODtopramezone = 1.91 μM, LODtembotrione = 1.38 μM and LODsulcotrione = 2.43 μM. The detection time is 1 min, and it is successfully applied in real water sample and bioimaging. This work can provide a novel method for studying the migration and behavior of environmental pollutants.

Platinum(ii) complexes of benzannulated N∧N−∧O-amido ligands: bright orange phosphors with long-lived excited states

Benzannulated N∧N−∧O-chelating ligands enable facile formation of remarkably bright orange-emitting Pt(ii) phosphors with very long-lived excited states.

Efficiently luminescent heteroleptic neutral platinum(II) complexes based on N^O and N^P benzimidazole ligands

A series of new luminescent cycloplatinated(II) complexes (5a-8a and 5b-8b) with formulas Pt(bt)(N^O) and Pt(bt)(N^P) have been synthesized [bt = phenylbenzothiazole, N^O = (2-(1H-benzimidazole)-phenyl)diphenylphosphine oxide derivatives for 1a-4a and N^P = (2-(1H-benzimidazole)-phenyl)diphenylphosphine derivatives for 1b-4b]. The crystal structures of the complexes show distorted square planar geometries around the platinum centers. There are no obvious π-π and Pt-Pt intermolecular interactions in the crystal lattice due to the presence of sterically bulky ancillary ligands. Consequently, these complexes exhibit structured monomeric emissions in the range of 527-540 nm in CH₂Cl₂ solution. The photoluminescent quantum yields of Pt(bt)(N^O) (5a-8a) in CH₂Cl₂ solution at room temperature are higher than those of Pt(bt)(N^P) (5b-8b). The above result is well consistent with the crystal structural characteristics of the complexes. The structured emission with microsecond radiative lifetimes and the result of TD-DFT calculations indicate that the emissions of these complexes are mainly attributed to a mixed ³LC-MLCT state.

Substituent effect on ESIPT and hydrogen bond mechanism of N-(8-Quinolyl) salicylaldimine: A detailed theoretical exploration

The effects of substituent on excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) and hydrogen bonding of N-(8-Quinolyl) salicylaldimine (QS) have been studied by theoretical calculation with DFT and TDDFT. The representative electron-withdrawing nitryl and electron-donating methoxyl were selected to analyze the effects on geometries, intramolecular hydrogen bond interaction, absorption/fluorescence spectra, and the ESIPT process. The configurations of the three molecules (QS, QS-OMe and QS-NO₂) were optimized in the ground and excited states. The structure parameters, infrared spectra, hydrogen bond interactions, frontier molecular orbitals, absorption/fluorescence spectra, and potential curves have cross-validated the current results. The results show that the introduction of substituent results in a bathochromic-shift of the absorption and fluorescence spectra with large Stokes shift, and is more beneficial to the ESIPT process. The current work will be beneficial to the improvement of ESIPT properties and deepen understanding of the mechanism of ESIPT process.

Differences in Stability, Cytotoxicity, and Mechanism of Action of Ru(II) and Pt(II) Complexes of a Bidentate N,O Donor Ligand

We report [Ru^II(L)(η⁶-p-cym)Cl] (1 and 2) and [Pt^II(L)(DMSO)Cl] (3 and 4) complexes, where L is a chelate imine ligand derived from chloroethylamine and salicylaldehyde (HL1) or o-vanillin (HL2). The complexes were characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction and other analytical techniques. The ¹H nuclear magnetic resonance data show that both the Ru(II) and Pt(II) complexes start forming the aquated complex within an hour. The aquated complexes are stable at least up to 24 h. The complexes bind to the N⁷ of the model nucleobase 9-ethylguanine (9-EtG). Interaction with calf thymus (CT) DNA shows moderate binding interactions with binding constants, K_b (3.7 ± 1.2) × 10³ M^-1 and (4.3 ± 1.9) × 10³ M^-1 for 1 and 3, respectively. The complexes exhibit significant antiproliferative activity against human pancreas ductal adenocarcinoma (Mia PaCa-2), triple negative metastatic breast adenocarcinoma (MDA-MB-231), hepatocellular carcinoma (Hep G2), and colorectal adenocarcinoma (HT-29) cell lines. The studies show that with the same ligand the Pt(II) complexes are more potent than the Ru(II) complexes. The in vitro potencies of all the complexes toward pancreatic cancer cell line MIA PaCa-2 are more than cisplatin (CDDP). The Pt(II) and Ru(II) complexes show similar binding constants with CT-DNA, but the reactivity of the Pt(II) complex 3 with 9-EtG is faster and their overall cell killing pathways are different. This is evident from the arrest of the cell cycle by the Ru(II) complex 1 in the G2/M phase in contrast to the SubG1 phase arrest by the Pt(II) complex 3. The immunoblot study shows that 3 increases cyclin D and Bcl-2 expression in MDA-MB-231 due to the SubG1 phase arrest where these proteins express in greater quantities. However, both 1 and 3 kill in the apoptotic pathway via dose-dependent activation of caspase 3. Complex 3 depolarizes the mitochondria more efficiently than 1, suggesting its higher preference for the intrinsic pathway of apoptosis. Our work reveals that the same bidentate ligand with a change of the metal center, viz, Pt(II) or Ru(II), imparts significant variation in cytotoxic dosage and pathway of action due to specific intrinsic properties of a metal center (viz, coordination geometry, solution stability) manifested in a complex.

Mono and dinuclear iridium(iii) complexes featuring bis-tridentate coordination and Schiff-base bridging ligands: the beneficial effect of a second metal ion on luminescence

Ditopic bis-N^N^O-coordinating ligands, prepared by Schiff base chemistry, lead to dinuclear iridium complexes that emit much more brightly than their mononuclear counterparts.
