A Tb3+ ion encapsulated anionic indium-organic framework as logical probe for distinguishing quenching Fe3+ and Cu2+ ions

We successfully synthesized a stable anionic microporous metal-organic framework (MOF) HDU-1 ([Me2NH2]2In2[(TATAB)4(DMF)4](DMF)4(H2O)4) and constructed a fluorescent probe Tb@HDU-1 by an exchange strategy. Because of its suspension distinct fluorescent response of Tb(III) characteristic transition and ligand emission, the Tb@HDU-1 can be used as fluorescent probe for sensing towards Fe3+ and Cu2+ ions. It is surprising that Tb@HDU-1 is used as a ratiometric fluorescent probe for Cu2+ ions while only single peak detection for Fe3+ ions, which describes a particular rare example of a sensor based on Ln-MOFs to distinguish quenching Fe3+ and Cu2+ ions. Hence we designed a molecular logic gate device for making the distinction of Fe3+ and Cu2+ ions more clearly and appropriately. In addition, the different quenching effect between Fe3+ and Cu2+ ions may be ascribed to the differences of competitive absorption and interaction between frameworks and metal ions.

Post-Synthetic Modification of Zr-based Metal-Organic Frameworks with Imidazole: Variable Optical Behavior and Sensing

UiO-66-NH2 -IM, a fluorescent metal-organic framework (MOF), was synthesized by post-synthetic modification of UiO-66-NH2 with 2-imidazole carboxaldehyde via a Schiff base reaction. It was examined using various characterization techniques (PXRD, FTIR, NMR, SEM, TGA, UV-Vis DRS, and photoluminescence spectroscopy). The emissive feature of UiO-66-NH2 -IM was utilized to detect volatile organic compounds (VOCs), metal ions, and anions, such as acetone, Fe3+ , and carbonate (CO3 2- ). Acetone turns off the high luminescence of UiO-66-NH2 -IM in DMSO, with the limit of detection (LOD) being 3.6 ppm. Similarly, Fe3+ in an aqueous medium is detected at LOD=0.67 μM (0.04 ppm) via quenching. On the contrary, CO3 2- in an aqueous medium significantly enhances the luminescence of UiO-66-NH2 -IM, which is detected with extremely high sensitivity (LOD=1.16 μM, i. e., 0.07 ppm). Large Stern-Volmer constant, Ksv , and low LOD values indicate excellent sensitivity of the post-synthetic MOF. Experimental data supported by density functional theory (DFT) calculations discern photo-induced electron transfer (PET), resonance energy transfer (RET), inner filter effect (IFE), or proton abstraction as putative sensing mechanisms. NMR and computational studies propose a proton abstraction mechanism for luminescence enhancement with CO3 2- . Moreover, the optical behavior of the post-synthetic material toward analytes is recyclable.

An Unusual Bismuth-Antimony-Europium Cluster-Imbedded Polyoxotungstate and Its Bidirectional Luminescence Detection

An unprecedented aggregate formed by two bismuth-antimony-europium cluster-imbedded tungsten-oxo clusters and one Krebs-type polyoxotungstate linker [H2N(CH3)2]14Na30H6[W4O10][B-β-BiW9O33]2{[Bi5.35Sb0.65Eu3O9(H2O)9][B-α-SbW9O33]3}2·124H2O (1) was prepared. The polyoxoanion skeleton of 1 contains a Krebs-type polyoxotungstate [W4O10][B-β-BiW9O33]2}14- ({Bi2W22}) (1a) as a linker that offers six active coordinate O atoms (two μ3-O and four μ2-O atoms) to grasp two Bi-Sb-Eu cluster-imbedded tungsten-oxo clusters {[Bi5.35Sb0.65Eu3O9(H2O)9][B-α-SbW9O33]3}18- (1b) through Bi-O-W and Sb-O-W bonds. 1b comprises an unprecedented nona-nuclearity Bi-Sb-Eu [Bi5.35Sb0.65Eu3O9(H2O)9]9+ cluster encircled by three trivacant [B-α-SbW9O33]9-segments in a triangular motif through Eu-O-W, Sb-O-W, and Bi-O-W linkages into a trilobal trimer. Moreover, a bidirectional detection method by using 1 as an effective luminescence probe was proposed to recognize both Mn2+ and CO32- through an "on-off-on" mode. 1 can be used as an "on-off" luminescent sensor to detect Mn2+ ions in aqueous solution. The limit of detection was 0.05 μM (9 × 10-6 mg L-1), which is much lower than the World Health Organization (WHO) guideline for Mn2+ concentration in drinking water (0.05 mg L-1). Then the Mn2+-quenching system can be used as an "off-on" sensor to detect CO32- in water system. This work provides a new research idea for the application of rare-earth-imbedded polyoxotungstate-based materials in the field of optical smart detection.

A Review of Gas Measurement Practices and Sensors for Tunnels

The concentration of pollutant gases emitted by traffic in a tunnel affects the indoor air quality and contributes to structural deterioration. Demand control ventilation systems incur high operating costs, so reliable measurement of the gas concentration is essential. Numerous commercial sensor types are available with proven experience, such as optical and first-generation electrochemical sensors, or novel materials in detection methods. However, all of them are subjected to measurement deviations due to environmental conditions. This paper presents the main types of sensors and their application in tunnels. Solutions will also be discussed in order to obtain reliable measurements and improve the efficiency of the extraction systems.

A new NCDs@ZIF-90-based sensor: fluorescent "turn-on" detection of Al3+ ions with high selectivity and sensitivity

A new NCDs@ZIF-90 composite as fluorescence sensor was designed and prepared by encapsulation of N-doped carbon dots (NCDs) in metal-organic framework (MOF) ZIF-90 in one-pot synthesis. NCDs@ZIF-90 retained the crystal structure and high thermal stability of ZIF-90; meanwhile, it also displayed the good chemical stability. NCDs@ZIF-90 dispersion in ethanol exhibited selective "turn-on" fluorescence response towards Al³⁺. The other coexisting competing metal ions had no obvious influence on the sensing performance of NCDs@ZIF-90 for Al³⁺. The fluorescence intensity at 447 nm of NCDs@ZIF-90 dispersion in ethanol had good linear relation with the concentrations of Al³⁺ with a low detection limit of 3.196 μM. The fluorescence enhancement after the addition of Al³⁺ was attributed to the release of NCDs from the inside of ZIF-90 to ethanol solution. In addition, NCDs@ZIF-90 displayed good recovery in detection of Al³⁺ in water samples indicating its practical application capability. The high selectivity and sensitivity indicate that NCDs@ZIF-90 is a good candidate as a "turn-on" fluorescence chemosensor to identify and detect Al³⁺.

Hierarchical Ti-MOF Microflowers for Synchronous Removal and Fluorescent Detection of Aluminum Ions

Bifunctional luminescence metal-organic frameworks with unique nanostructures have drawn ongoing attention for simultaneous determination and elimination of metal ions in the aqueous environment, but still remain a great challenge. In this work, three-dimensional hierarchical titanium metal-organic framework (Ti-MOF) microflowers were developed by a secondary hydrothermal method for not only highly sensitive and selective detection of Al(III), but also simultaneously efficient decontamination. The resulting Ti-MOF microflowers with a diameter of 5-6 μm consisted of nanorods with a diameter of ∼200 nm and a length of 1-2 μm, which provide abundant, surface active sites for determination and elimination of Al(III) ions. Because of their substantial specific surface area and superior fluorescence characteristics, Ti-MOF microflowers are used as fluorescence probes for quantitative determination of Al(III) in the aqueous environment. Importantly, the specific FL enhancement by Al(III) via a chelation-enhanced fluorescence mechanism can be utilized for selective and quantitative determination of Al(III). The Al(III) detection has a linear range of 0.4-15 µM and a detection limit as low as 75 nM. By introducing ascorbic acid, interference of Fe(III) can be avoided to achieve selective detection of Al(III) under various co-existing cations. It is noteworthy that the Ti-MOF microflowers exhibit excellent adsorption capacity for Al(III) with a high adsorption capacity of 25.85 mg g^-1. The rapid adsorption rate is consistent with a pseudo-second order kinetic model. Ti-MOF is a promising contender as an adsorbent and a fluorescent chemical sensor for simultaneous determination and elimination of Al(III) due to its exceptional water stability, high porosity, and intense luminescence.

Iron(II) Immobilized within a Metal-Organic Framework Mixed-Matrix Membrane as a H2O2 Turn-On Sensor

H2O2 detection is closely relevant to human health; however, most of the H2O2 probes suffer from low accuracy and sensitivity because of the aggregating nature of solid sensors. In contrast, a mixed-matrix membrane (MMM) with high processability and flexibility is a suitable H2O2 probe to overcome these drawbacks. Herein, we fabricated MOF-based MMMs by using a robust UiO-66-(COOH)2 with carboxylate-chelating moieties, which were utilized for binding Fe (II) metal centers. The Fe (II)-immobilized MOF-MMM involved in a Fenton reaction when treated with H2O2, exhibiting a fluorescence turn-on property. Compared to the bulk-state MOF powder, the MOF-MMM sensor showed much-improved sensitivity (detection limit down to 0.0215 μM) because of the uniform dispersion of the probe and a sufficient contact with the analyte. This MOF-MMM sensor combinedly exhibited a turn-on fluorescence response and outstanding sensing properties with flexibility and processability, providing a novel platform suitable for practical sensing applications.

A multi-responsive luminescent sensor based on a stable Eu(iii) metal–organic framework for sensing Fe3+, MnO4−, and Cr2O72− in aqueous solutions

A stable benzothiadiazole-based Eu(iii) metal–organic framework with cco topology has been successfully constructed, and represents the multifunctional fluorescence sensor toward Fe3+, MnO4− and Cr2O72− in aqueous solutions.

A Eu(iii) metal–organic framework based on anthracenyl and alkynyl conjugation as a fluorescence probe for the selective monitoring of Fe3+ and TNP

In this work, a luminescent metal–organic framework (Eu-MOF {[Eu₆L₆(μ₃-OH)₈(H₂O)₃]₈·H₂O}_n) was constructed by a solvothermal method with a linear organic ligand L (10-[(2-amino-4-carboxyl-phenyl)ethynyl]anthracene-9-carboxylic acid) based on anthracene and alkyne groups and using Eu³⁺ as the metal center. The MOF exhibits a stable UiO-66 crystal structure, and a six-core cluster twelve-linked secondary structural unit was successfully synthesized using 2-fluorobenzoic acid as a modulator, forming a classical fcu topology. Moreover, it exhibits good chemical stability. Interestingly, Eu-MOF exhibited high selectivity and sensitive fluorescence burst properties towards Fe³⁺ ions and 2,4,6-trinitrophenol (TNP) in DMF solution. For Fe³⁺, the K_SV value is 5.06 × 10⁵ M⁻¹ and the LOD value is 5.1 × 10⁻⁷ M. For TNP, the K_SV value is 1.92 × 10⁴ M⁻¹ and the LOD value is 1.93 × 10⁻⁶ M. In addition, Eu-MOF showed good anti-interference ability and fast response. This work provides an excellent fluorescent sensor for the detection of Fe³⁺ and 2,4,6-trinitrophenol (TNP) residues in contaminants.

In this work, Eu-MOF has been synthesized and has excellent luminescence recognition ability for Fe³⁺ and TNP with good selectivity and high sensitivity via luminescence quenching.

A novel 3D coordination polymer constructed by dual-ligand for highly sensitive detection of purine metabolite uric acid

Uric acid (UA), as the final product of purine metabolism, exists in urine and serum, which plays an important role in human metabolism, immunity and other functions. The sensitive, efficient, and rapid detection of UA has far-reaching significance in clinical diagnosis and disease prevention. Herein, a novel coordination polymer constructed by dual-ligand was successfully prepared, which exhibited excellent thermal and water stability. The polymer was interlaced by coordination bonds and hydrogen bonds to form an infinitely extended three-dimensional framework, which showed a rare and novel topological structure. The complex selectively recognized UA through significant fluorescence quenching response in the presence of various interferences. The excellent detection sensitivity (the limited detection of 1.2 μM), outstanding anti-interference ability and remarkable recyclability marked the complex to be a promising sensor material towards UA. In addition, the detection mechanism of UA by the complex was investigated in detail by combining density functional theory (DFT) and a variety of other analytical methods.

Crystal Structures, Thermal and Luminescent Properties of Gadolinium(III) Trans-1,4-cyclohexanedicarboxylate Metal-Organic Frameworks

Four new gadolinium(III) metal-organic frameworks containing 2,2′-bipyridyl (bpy) or 1,10-phenanthroline (phen) chelate ligands and trans-1,4-cyclohexanedicarboxylate (chdc2−) were synthesized. Their crystal structures were determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. All four coordination frameworks are based on the binuclear carboxylate building units. In the compounds [Gd2(bpy)2(chdc)3]·H2O (1) and [Gd2(phen)2(chdc)3]·0.5DMF (2), the six-connected {Ln2(L)2(OOCR)6} blocks form a 3D network with the primitive cubic (pcu) topology. In the compounds [Gd2(NO3)2(phen)2(chdc)2]·2DMF (3) and [Gd2Cl2(phen)2(chdc)2]·0.3DMF·2.2dioxane (4), the four-connected {Ln2(L)2(X)2OOCR)4} units (where X = NO3− for 3 or Cl− for 4) form a 2D square-grid (sql) network. The solid-state luminescent properties were investigated for the synthesized frameworks. Bpy-containing compound 1 shows no luminescence, possibly due to the paramagnetic quenching by Gd3+ cation. In contrast, the phenathroline-containing MOFs 2–4 possess yellow emission under visible excitation (λex = 460 nm) with the tuning of the characteristic wavelength by the coordination environment of the metal center.

An europium(III) metal-organic framework as a multi-responsive luminescent sensor for highly sensitive and selective detection of 4-nitrophenol and I- and Fe3+ ions in water

A luminescence sensor based on an europium(III)-based lanthanide-organic framework, [Eu(BCB)(DMF)]·(DMF)_1.5(H₂O)₂ (1), was synthesized via a solvothermal method using 4,4',4''-benzenetricarbonyltribenzoic acid (H₃BCB) as a bridging ligand. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction indicates that Eu centers are eight-coordinated with a trigonal dodecahedron and a square antiprismatic configuration, and adjacent Eu atoms are bridged by BCB organic linkers to form a 3D rod-packing structure. Photoluminescence studies show that compound 1 emits bright red luminescence and behaves as a multi-responsive luminescent sensor toward 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) and I^- and Fe³⁺ ions in water with high sensitivity, selectivity and low detection limits. Furthermore, the possible luminescence sensing mechanisms were also investigated by PXRD analysis, UV-vis spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The recognition mechanism for 4-NP and I^- ions can be attributed to the competition absorption and that for Fe³⁺ ions is considered to be a multi-quenching mechanism dominated by competition absorption. This study demonstrates that the lanthanide-based MOF might be a promising candidate for the detection of 4-NP and I^- and Fe³⁺ ions in aqueous medium.

New Ln-MOFs based on mixed organic ligands: synthesis, structure and efficient luminescence sensing of the Hg2+ ions in aqueous solutions

In view of Hg²⁺ ion sensing by luminescence, a series of new, phenanthroline-decorated 3D lanthanide metal organic frameworks (Ln-MOFs) valorising an original combination of four different lanthanides and two organic ligands, i.e. thiobis(4-methylene-benzoic acid) (H₂tmba) and 1,10-phenanthroline (phen), have been successfully synthesized, namely {[Ln₄(tmba)₆(phen)₄]·m(H₂O)(phen)}_n [Ln = Ce, m = 3 (1); Pr, m = 1 (2); Eu, m = 3 (3); and Tb, m = 3 (4)]. Compounds 1-4 were characterised by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, elemental and thermogravimetric analyses, and powder X-ray diffraction. The luminescence properties of complexes 3 and 4 were thoroughly investigated. It is herein proved that compound 3 sensitively and selectively acts as an excellent luminescent probe for the detection of Hg²⁺ ions in waters, with a detection limit of 1.00 μM. As additional assets, 3 displays superb stability over a wide pH range (3-12) of the aqueous media, as well as convenient recycling after completion of the detection experiments. The rationale for the observed luminescence quenching effect of mercury might be a strong interaction arising between Hg²⁺ ions and the carboxylate oxygen atoms of the tmba^2- ligand. The results open new perspectives for applications in environmental remediation.

Construction of a simple dual-channel fluorescence chemosensor for Cu2+ ion and GSSG detection and its mitochondria-targeting bioimaging applications

Numerous chemosensors have been developed for next-generation detection systems because of their ease of use and promising characteristics to distinguish signals between various analytes binding. However, given their typically poor emission response and arduous preparation methods, very few chemosensing probes have been commercialized to date. In this work, a simple, naphthoquinone-based mitochondria-targeting chemosensor (CIA) has been fabricated for the simultaneous detection of Cu²⁺ and GSSG (glutathione oxidized) through an "on-off" mode in a buffered semi-aqueous solution. Significantly, the CIA chemosensor showed a sensitive detection response towards Cu²⁺ and GSSG with low detection limits (0.309 μM, and 0.226 μM, respectively). In addition, the detection mechanism of CIA was thoroughly verified and confirmed using numerous analytical techniques. Furthermore, CIA was utilized as a sequential fluorescence biomarker to detect Cu²⁺ in human cervical cancer cell lines. These findings indicate that the chemosensor CIA can discriminate human cancer cells from normal cells. The CIA was also confirmed to possess the ability to target mitochondria. More importantly, the present CIA chemosensor detected Cu²⁺ in zebrafish larvae, indicating the probe has tissue penetration ability.

Facile synthesis of highly luminescent rod-like terbium-based metal-organic frameworks for sensitive detection of olaquindox

Olaquindox (OLA), a chemically synthesized antibacterial growth promoter, despite being strictly controlled, is illegally used in feed to improve feed conversion efficiency and increase the rate of weight gain for animals. However, it has become clear that OLA has toxic effects on human beings via the transmission of OLA through the food chain. Here, by employing terbium nitrate to provide metal ions and benzene-1,3,5-tricarboxylic acid (H₃BTC) as an organic ligand, a simple, rapid, and easy scale-up synthetic method was presented for the fabrication of water-stable and highly luminescent rod-like metal-organic frameworks (Tb-BTC MOFs). Using the Tb-BTC MOFs as a luminescent probe, the luminescence quenching effect was obviously observed upon the addition of OLA, ascribed to the binding of OLA molecules on the surface of Tb-BTC and the existence of an inner-filter effect (IFE) mechanism. The correlation between the luminescence quenching ΔI and the concentration of OLA was found to be linear from 1.0 to 1000.0 μM with a detection limit of 20.6 nM. Furthermore, a Tb-BTC-loaded fiber paper was prepared and it is highly responsive (30 s) and suitable for visual OLA assay. The method described here can be successfully applied to the detection of OLA in animal feed and edible animal tissue samples.

Intense multi-colored luminescence in a series of rare-earth metal-organic frameworks with aliphatic linkers

Two series of highly luminescent yttrium(iii), europium(iii) and terbium(iii) metal-organic frameworks containing diimine aromatic ligands and the dicarboxylate linker trans-1,4-cyclohexanedicarboxylate (chdc^2-) which can be described by the general formulas [M₂(bpy)₂(chdc)₃], where M = Y³⁺ (1), Eu³⁺ (2), and Tb³⁺ (3) and bpy = 2,2'-bipyridyl, and [M₂(phen)₂(chdc)₃], where M = Y³⁺ (4), Eu³⁺ (5), and Tb³⁺ (6) and phen = 1,10-phenanthroline, were synthesized and characterized. All compounds are based on the same dinuclear {M₂(L)₂(OOCR)₆} building blocks and possess a similar topology of the 3D framework with narrow pores. The chelate aromatic ligands act as efficient light-harvesting antennas for subsequent energy transfer to the emitting metal center (M = Eu³⁺, Tb³⁺) or intraligand photoemission (M = Y³⁺). As a result, the reported compounds display intense emission in the red (Eu³⁺), green (Tb³⁺) or blue (Y³⁺) regions representing three basic colors (RGB) of visible light. The measured quantum yields (QYs) of the solid-state luminescence for individual compounds were found to be 63% (1), 46% (2), 59% (3), 2.3% (4), 55% (5) and 49% (6). The drastic reduction of the luminescence efficiency for 4 is explained by the strong disorder of phen ligands. The high thermal stability (up to 300 °C) and exceptional moisture resistance of the bpy-based frameworks 1-3 were confirmed by TG and PXRD measurements. Various bimetal or trimetal compositions were also prepared for the bpy-series. The luminescence properties of these mixed-metal compounds depend on both the chemical composition and excitation wavelength (λ_ex). Remarkably, pure white emission with color temperature = 6126 K was achieved for [Y_1.68Eu_0.08Tb_0.24(bpy)₂(chdc)₃] at λ_ex = 360 nm with QY = 20%. The reported results suggest that the obtained coordination framework series is a convenient platform for the design of highly efficient light emitting materials with tunable properties.

Coordination networks for the recognition of oxo-anions

Crystalline coordination networks with an infinite extended framework, also known as coordination polymers (CPs) or metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), have attracted significant attention owing to their tremendous performance in an extensive range of applications. The unique structural features and high stability of coordination networks are responsible for their utilization and potential in diverse fields especially in the area of sensing using luminescent CPs/MOFs. The recognition of toxic oxo-anions present in water is a crucial and first step towards environmental remediation, mainly in the case of water pollution. Accordingly, the utilization of luminescent coordination networks has received significant interest, particularly for the recognition of various toxic oxo-anions, which are considered a threat to aquatic life and the environment. In this frontier article, we summarize recent reports on luminescent CPs/MOFs, their utilization for the sensing of oxo-anions and the chemistry of the interaction of oxo-anions with CPs/MOFs, which is responsible for tuning their optical signals.

Recent advances in the development of fluorescent chemosensors for Al3

Detection of Al3+ has become important as it is related to several health issues and other problems. Different fluorophoric platforms, such as naphthalene, benzene, rhodamine, etc., have been explored to sense Al3+ and a good number of research articles are being published. This article focuses on the synthesis of recently reported aluminum sensors constructed from 2-hydroxy-1-naphthaldehyde, salicylaldehyde, rhodamine, coumarin and different metal based-MOFs.

Simple fluorescence optosensing probe for spermine based on ciprofloxacin-Tb3+ complexation

We developed a facile detection method of spermine based on the fluorescence (FL) quenching of the ciprofloxacin-Tb3+ complex, which shows astrong green emission. Ciprofloxacin (CP) makes efficient bondings to Tb3+ ion as a linker molecule through carboxylic and ketone groups to form a kind of lanthanide coordination polymer. The addition of spermine that competes with Tb3+ ions for the interaction with CP due to its positive charge brings about weakened coordination linkage of CP and Tb3+. The probe exhibited high sensitivity, selectivity, and good linearity in the range of 2-180 μM with a low limit of detection of 0.17 μM. Moreover, we applied this method on the paper strip test (PST), along with the integration of a smartphone and Arduino-based device. The practical reliability of the developed probe was evaluated on human serum samples with acceptable analytical results.

Metal-Organic Frameworks for Liquid Phase Applications

In the last two decades, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have attracted overwhelming attention. With readily tunable structures and functionalities, MOFs offer an unprecedentedly vast degree of design flexibility from enormous number of inorganic and organic building blocks or via postsynthetic modification to produce functional nanoporous materials. A large extent of experimental and computational studies of MOFs have been focused on gas phase applications, particularly the storage of low-carbon footprint energy carriers and the separation of CO2-containing gas mixtures. With progressive success in the synthesis of water- and solvent-resistant MOFs over the past several years, the increasingly active exploration of MOFs has been witnessed for widespread liquid phase applications such as liquid fuel purification, aromatics separation, water treatment, solvent recovery, chemical sensing, chiral separation, drug delivery, biomolecule encapsulation and separation. At this juncture, the recent experimental and computational studies are summarized herein for these multifaceted liquid phase applications to demonstrate the rapid advance in this burgeoning field. The challenges and opportunities moving from laboratory scale towards practical applications are discussed.

Recent progresses in luminescent metal-organic frameworks (LMOFs) as sensors for the detection of anions and cations in aqueous solution

The discharge of excessive metal ions and anions into water bodies leads to the serious pollution of water and environment, which in turn has a certain impact on industry, agriculture, and human life. Because of the unique advantages of luminescent metal-organic frameworks (LMOFs), they have been successfully explored as various fluorescent probes to quickly and effectively detect these pollutants. This perspective not only introduces the design strategy and classification of LMOFs, especially the construction methods of water-stable LMOFs, but also reports the latest progresses in some LMOFs between 2016 and 2020 as well as expounds the mechanisms of LMOFs for detecting anions and cations. Moreover, the luminescence properties of LMOFs are related to the selection of metal ions, the structure of organic ligands, the pore size, and the interaction of guest molecules. Finally, the further development of LMOFs is summarized and prospected in this field.

Selective and recyclable tandem sensing of PO43- and Al3+ by a water-stable terbium-based metal-organic framework

Herein, a luminescent water-stable terbium-based metal-organic framework (MOF) {[Tb(Cmdcp)(H₂O)₃]₂(NO₃)₂·5H₂O}_n (1, H₃CmdcpBr = N-carboxymethyl-(3,5-dicarboxyl)pyridinium bromide) has been synthesized and used for the recyclable sensing of PO₄^3- and Al³⁺ in tandem. MOF 1 acts as a fluorescent sensor for PO₄^3- by the luminescence "turn-off" mechanism with high selectivity over other anions, such as F^-, Cl^-, Br^-, I^-, NO₃^-, H₂PO₄^-, HSO₄^-, HCO₃^-, HSO₃^-, SO₄^2-, CO₃^2- and HPO₄^2-. The formed PO₄^3-@1 complex further acts as the Al³⁺ sensor with the luminescence "turn-on" mechanism, also with high selectivity over diverse inorganic cations of Fe²⁺, Mn²⁺, Co²⁺, Ni²⁺, Hg²⁺, Na⁺, K⁺, Li⁺, Ag⁺, Mg²⁺, Ca²⁺, Cd²⁺, Pb²⁺, Cu²⁺, and Zn²⁺. The detection process for both PO₄^3- and Al³⁺ can be directly observed with naked eyes under the UV light at 365 nm. The detection limits for PO₄^3- and Al³⁺ are 1.1 μM and 6.6 μM, respectively. Such a sensing cycle is further transferable to urine and serum samples with a satisfactory near-quantitative recovery, highlighting its good potential in biologically relevant applications.

A terbium(III) lanthanide-organic framework as a selective and sensitive iodide/bromide sensor in aqueous medium

A potent luminescent sensor for the detection of iodide ions was developed based on a terbium(iii)-based lanthanide-organic framework [Tb(cpia)(H2O)2]n·nH2O (1), which was prepared under hydrothermal conditions using the 5-(4-carboxyphenoxy)isophthalic acid (H3cpia) bridging ligand. Compound 1 exhibits superior luminescence quenching behavior towards I- with high sensitivity and selectivity among various anions and shows real-time response. Moreover, the mechanism of the selective luminescence quenching response for I- can be mainly explained by the absorption competition between 1 and I-. According to this quenching mechanism, we find that compound 1 can also detect Br- by adjusting the excitation wavelength. Significantly, this work could serve as a general guidance for the design and synthesis of pollutant sensors.

Highly Sensitive Optical Detection of Escherichia coli Using Terbium-Based Metal-Organic Framework

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are envisaged as highly useful for the development of biosensors. Herein, for the first time, we report the optical detection of Escherichia coli using a water-dispersible terbium MOF (Tb-BTC; BTC, 1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylic acid). The successful synthesis of Tb-BTC is verified using spectroscopic and morphological techniques like UV-vis, fluorescence and FTIR spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction analysis, and electron microscopy. Tb-BTC has been bio-interfaced with anti-E. coli antibodies and then investigated as a biosensor for E. coli. The biosensor displays detection ability in an analyte concentration range of 1.3 × 10² to 1.3 × 10⁸ cfu/mL with a detection limit of 3 cfu/mL, having a response time of 5 min and a total analysis time of about 20-25 min. The results are also found to be reproducible and specific in the presence of some other interfering bacterial species. As demonstrated, the present sensor provides highly sensitive and specific detection of E. coli in fruit juice sample. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report to showcase the potential of the MOF-based fluorescent biosensor for the detection of E. coli.

Three Novel Zn-Based Coordination Polymers: Synthesis, Structure, and Effective Detection of Al3+ and S2- Ions

Three novel Zn-based coordination polymers (CPs), [Zn(MIPA)]_n (1), {[Zn(MIPA)(4,4′-bipy)_0.5(H₂O)]·1.5H₂O}_n (2), and {[Zn(MIPA)(bpe)]·H₂O}_n (3) (MIPA = 4-methoxyisophthalic acid, 4,4′-bipy = 4,4′-bipyridine, bpe = (E)-1,2-di(pyridine-4-yl)ethane), were constructed by ligand 4-methoxyisophthalic acid under solvothermal conditions. Compound 1 features a beaded 2D-layer architecture, while compound 2 presents a 2-fold interpenetrating structure with a uninodal three-connected hcb topology. Compound 3 has a 3-fold interpenetrated four-connected dmp topology. Photoluminescence investigations of compound 2 were explored in detail, by which ions were detected, and it was observed to have the highest quenching efficiency toward Al³⁺ and S²⁻ ions. The possible fluorescence quenching mechanisms of 2 toward Al³⁺ and S²⁻ ions were also explored. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first potential dual-responsive luminescent probe based on a Zn(II) coordination polymer for detecting Al³⁺ and S²⁻ ions via a luminescence quenching effect in ethanol.

Waste PET as a Reactant for Lanthanide MOF Synthesis and Application in Sensing of Picric Acid

In this study, a lanthanide metal organic framework based on the ligand of terephthalic acid derived from waste polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottles was designed and synthesized. The structure and morphology of the Tb-BDC was investigated by X-ray diffractometry (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The Tb-BDC displays a high selectivity and sensitivity towards picric acid (TNP). The luminescence intensities exhibit a linear relation, with a concentration of TNP over the range of 1 × 10^-5-1 × 10^-4 M, with a limit of detection of 1 × 10^-5 M. The sensing mechanism is also discussed. This is the first time that waste PET materials have been used as the starting precursor of terephthalic acid (BDC) for the fabrication of lanthanide MOF (metal organic framework), which is applied in sensing TNP.
