Stereochemistry of coordination polyhedra vs. single ion magnetism in penta- and hexacoordinated Co(ii) complexes with tridentate rigid ligands

Six-Coordinated CoII Single-Molecule Magnets: Synthetic Strategy, Structure and Magnetic Properties

The pursuit of molecule-based magnetic memory materials contributes significantly to high-density information storage research in the frame of the ongoing information technologies revolution. Remarkable progress has been achieved in both transition metal (TM) and lanthanide based single-molecule magnets (SMMs). Notably, six-coordinated CoII SMMs hold particular research significance owing to the economic and abundant nature of 3d TM ions compared to lanthanide ions, the substantial spin-orbit coupling of CoII ions, the potential for precise control over coordination geometry, and the air-stability of coordination-saturated structures. In this review, we will summarize the progress made in six-coordinated CoII SMMs, organized by their coordination geometry and molecular structure similarity. Valuable insights, principles, and new mechanism gleaned from this research and remaining issues that need to be addressed will also be discussed to guide future optimization.

Magnetic anisotropy and slow relaxation of magnetisation in double salts containing four- and six-coordinate cobalt(II) complex ions

Four novel Co(II) coordination compounds 1-4 of the general formula [Co(Ln)2][Co(NCY)4]·mCH3CN (where Ln are tridentate ligands L1 = 2,6-bis(1-hexyl-1H-benzimidazol-2-yl)pyridine for 1 and 2; L2 = 2,6-bis(1-octyl-1H-benzimidazol-2-yl)pyridine for 3; L3 = 2,6-bis(1-dodecyl-1H-benzimidazol-2-yl)pyridine for 4, Y = O for 1, 3, and 4 and Y = S for 2; m = 0 for 1 and 3, m = 0.5 for 2 and m = 2 for 4) were prepared and characterised. The molecular structures of all four compounds consist of the hexacoordinate complex cation [Co(Ln)2]2+ and tetracoordinate complex anion [Co(NCY)4]2-, with distorted octahedral and tetrahedral symmetry of coordination polyhedra, respectively. The electronic structures of all compounds feature an orbitally non-degenerate ground state well-separated from the lowest excited state, which allows the analysis of the magnetic anisotropy by the spin Hamiltonian model. ZFS parameters, derived from both CASSCF-NEVPT2 calculations and magnetic data analysis, indicate that tetrahedral anions [Co(NCY)4]2- exhibit small axial parameters |D| spanning the range of 2.2 to 7.7 cm-1, while octahedral cations [Co(Ln)2]2+ display significantly larger |D| parameters in the range of 37 to 95 cm-1. For 1-3, the Fourier-transform infrared magnetic spectroscopy (FIRMS) revealed a reasonable transmission with a magnetic absorption around the expected value for the ZFS accompanied by features allowing to identify phonon frequencies and simulate spin-phonon couplings. Dynamic magnetic investigations unveiled the field-induced slow relaxation of magnetisation, with maximal relaxation times (τ) of 92(2) μs for 2 at 2 K and BDC = 0.3 T. The temperature evolution of τ was analysed using a combination of Orbach, direct and Raman relaxations (Ueff = 8(1) K (5.6 cm-1)) or Orbach, direct and spin-phonon induced relaxations (Ueff = 10.3(9) K (7.2 cm-1)). The rest of the complexes, namely 1, 3, and 4 show field-induced slow relaxation of magnetisation with τ smaller than 16 μs.

Solvation/desolvation induced reversible distortion change and switching between spin crossover and single molecular magnet behaviour in a cobalt(II) complex

Coexistence and switching between spin-crossover (SCO) and single molecular magnet (SMM) behaviours in one single complex may lead to materials that exhibit bi-stable and stimuli sensitive properties in a wide temperature range and under multiple conditions; unfortunately, the conflict and dilemma in the principle of approaching SCO and SMM molecules make it particularly difficult; at low temperature, low spin (LS) SCO molecules possess highly symmetrical geometry and isotropic spins, which are not suitable for SMM behaviour. Herein, we overcome this issue by using a rationally designed Co(II) mononuclear complex [Co(MeOphterpy)2] (ClO4)2 (1; MeOphterpy = 4'-(4-methoxyphenyl)-2,2':6',2''-terpyridine), the magnetic properties of which reversibly respond to desolvation and solvation. The solvated structure reinforced a low distortion of the coordination sphere via hydrogen bonding between ligands and methanol molecules, while in the desolvated structure a methoxy group flipping occurred, increasing the distortion of the coordination sphere and stabilising the HS state at low temperature, which exhibited a field-induced slow magnetic relaxation, resulting in a reversible switching between SCO and SMM properties within one molecule.

The Role of the Bridge in Single-Ion Magnet Behaviour: Reinvestigation of Cobalt(II) Succinate and Fumarate Coordination Polymers with Nicotinamide

Two previously synthesized cobalt(II) coordination polymers; {[Co(μ2-suc)(nia)2(H2O)2]·2H2O}n (suc = succinate(2−), nia = nicotinamide) and [Co(μ2-fum)(nia)2(H2O)2]n (fum = fumarate(2−)) were prepared and thoroughly characterized. Both complexes form 1D coordination chains by bonding of Co(nia)2(H2O)2 units through succinate or fumarate ligands while these chains are further linked through hydrogen bonds to 3D supramolecular networks. The intermolecular interactions of both complexes are quantified using Hirshfeld surface analysis and their infrared spectra, electronic spectra and static magnetic properties are confronted with DFT and state-of-the-art ab-initio calculations. Dynamic magnetic measurements show that both complexes exhibit single-ion magnet behaviour induced by a magnetic field. Since they possess very similar chemical structure, differing only in the rigidity of the bridge between the magnetic centres, this chemical feature is put into context with changes in their magnetic relaxation.

Effect of Ligand Chain Length for Tuning of Molecular Dimensionality and Magnetic Relaxation in Redox Active Cobalt(II) EDOT Complexes (EDOT = 3,4-Ethylenedioxythiophene)

Four cobalt(II) complexes, [Co(L1)2(NCX)2(MeOH)2] (X = S (1), Se (2)) and {[Co(L2)2(NCX)2]}n (X = S (3), Se (4)) (L1 = 2,5dipyridyl-3,4,-ethylenedioxylthiophene and L2 = 2,5diethynylpyridinyl-3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene), were synthesized by incorporating ethylenedioxythiophene based redox-active luminescence ligands. All these complexes have been well characterized using single-crystal X-ray diffraction analyses, spectroscopic and magnetic investigations. Magneto-structural studies showed that 1 and 2 adopt a mononuclear structure with CoN4O2 octahedral coordination geometry while 3 and 4 have a 2D [4 x 4] rhombic grid coordination networks (CNs) where each cobalt(II) center is in a CoN6 octahedral coordination environment. Static magnetic measurements reveal that all four complexes displayed a high spin (HS) (S = 3/2) state between 2 and 280 K which was further confirmed by X-band and Q-band EPR studies. Remarkably, along with the molecular dimensionality (0D and 2D) the modification in the axial coligands lead to a significant difference in the dynamic magnetic properties of the monomers and CNs at low temperatures. All complexes display slow magnetic relaxation behavior under an external dc magnetic field. For the complexes with NCS- as coligand observed higher energy barrier for spin reversal in comparison to the complexes with NCSe- as coligand, while mononuclear complex 1 exhibited a higher energy barrier than that of CN 3. Theoretical calculations at the DFT and CASSCF level of theory have been performed to get more insight into the electronic structure and magnetic properties of all four complexes.

Co(II) single-ion magnets: synthesis, structure, and magnetic properties

Magnetoactive coordination compounds exhibiting bi- or multistability between two or more magnetic stable states present an attractive example of molecular switches. Currently, the research is focused on molecular nanomagnets, especially single molecule magnets (SMMs), which are molecules, where the slow relaxation of the magnetization based on the purely molecular origin is observed. Contrary to ferromagnets, the magnetic bistability of SMMs does not require intermolecular interactions, which makes them particularly interesting in terms of application potential, especially in the high-density storage of data. This paper aims to introduce the readers into a basic understanding of SMM behaviour, and furthermore, it provides an overview of the attractive Co(II) SMMs with emphasis on the relation between structural features, magnetic anisotropy, and slow relaxation of magnetization in tetra-, penta-, and hexacoordinate complexes.

Slow-Relaxation Behavior of a Mononuclear Co(II) Complex Featuring Long Axial Co-O Bond

Co(II) mononuclear complex with different coordination geometry would display various of field-induced single-ion magnet (SIM) behaviors. Here, we identify a field-induced single-ion magnet in a mononuclear complex Co(H2DPA)2·H2O (H2DPA = 2,6-pyridine-dicarboxylic acid) by the hydrothermal method. The long axial Co-O coordination bond (Co1‧‧‧O3) can be formed by Co1 and O3. Therefore, Co(II) ion is six-coordinated in a distorted elongated octahedron. AC magnetization susceptibilities show that the effective energy barrier is up to 43.28 K. This is much larger than most mononuclear Co(II). The distorted elongated octahedron caused by the axial Co-O coordination bond is responsible for the high effective energy barrier. The distribution of electron density in Co1 and O3 atoms in the long axial bond would influence the magnetic relaxation process in turn. Our work deepens the relationship between the effective energy barrier and the weak change of ligand field by long axial bonds, which would facilitate constructing SIM with high energy temperature.

Field-induced single-ion magnet based on a quasi-octahedral Co(II) complex with mixed sulfur-oxygen coordination environment

Synthesis and characterization of structure and magnetic properties of the quasi-octahedral complex (pipH₂)[Co(TDA)₂] 2H₂O (I), (pipH₂²⁺ = piperazine dication, TDA^2- = thiodiacetic anion) are described. X-ray diffraction studies reveal the first coordination sphere of the Co(II) ion, consisting of two chelating tridentate TDA ligands with a mixed sulfur-oxygen strongly elongated octahedral coordination environment. SQUID magnetometry, frequency-domain Fourier-transform (FD-FT) THz-EPR spectroscopy, and high-level ab initio SA-CASSCF/NEVPT2 quantum chemical calculations reveal a strong "easy-plane" type magnetic anisotropy (D ≈ +54 cm^-1) of complex I. The complex shows field-induced slow relaxation of magnetization at an applied DC field of 1000 Oe.

Influence of F-position and solvent on coordination geometry and single ion magnet behavior of Co(II) complexes

Three mononuclear Co(II) complexes with the compositions of [Co(L₁)₂] (1), [Co(L₂)₂(CH₃CN)] (2) and [Co(L₃)₂] (3) (HL₁ = 2-((E)-(2-fluorobenzylimino)methyl)-4,6-dibromophenol, HL₂ = 2-((E)-(3-fluorobenzylimino)methyl)-4,6-dibromophenol and HL₃ = 2-((E)-(4-fluorobenzylimino)methyl)-4,6-dibromophenol) were prepared and structurally determined. The changes in the F-positions in the ligands and solvents led to the formation of these products with various coordination geometries. Both complexes 1 and 3 are four-coordinated and their coordination geometries can be described as tetrahedron and seesaw, whereas complex 2 is five coordinated with a coordination configuration in between trigonal bipyramid and square pyramid. Static magnetic studies reveal that all these complexes exhibit considerable easy-axis magnetic anisotropy. The easy-axis magnetic anisotropy of 1 and 3 mainly derives from the first quartet excited state, whereas that of 2 primarily originates from the first, third and fourth quartet excited states established by theoretical calculations. All the resulting complexes display field-induced slow magnetic relaxation. Complex 3 represents the first Co(II) single ion magnet with a seesaw coordination geometry. Ab initio calculations predict that the magnetic anisotropy will enhance when the seesaw coordination geometry varies from distortion to regulation.

Insertion of single-ion magnets based on mononuclear Co(II) complexes into ferromagnetic oxalate-based networks

The 1 : 2 and 1 : 1 Co(ii) complexes of the L ligand (L = 6-(3,5-diamino-2,4,6-triazinyl)2,2'-bipyridine) with formulas [CoII(L)2](ClO4)2·0.5MeCN·Et2O (1) and [CoII(L)(CH3CN)2(H2O)](ClO4)2·MeCN (2) have been prepared. The structural and magnetic characterization of the two compounds shows that they contain octahedral high-spin Co(ii) and present a field-induced slow relaxation of the magnetization. 1 has been inserted into a bimetallic oxalate-based network leading to a novel achiral 3D compound of formula [CoII(L)2][MnIICrIII(ox)3]2·(solvate) (3) exhibiting ferromagnetic ordering below 4.6 K. EPR measurements suggest a weak magnetic coupling between the two sublattices.

Low-spin and spin-crossover iron(II) complexes with pyridyl-benzimidazole ligands: synthesis, and structural, magnetic and solution study

Two tridentate ligands (L1 = 2,6-bis(1-(3,5-di-tert-butylbenzyl)-1H-benzimidazol-2-yl)pyridine and L2 = 2,6-bis(1-(4-tert-butylbenzyl)-1H-benzimidazol-2-yl)pyridine) and one didentate ligand (L3 = 1-(4-tert-butylbenzyl)-2-pyridine-2-yl-1H-benzimidazol) were used for the synthesis of eight mononuclear Fe(ii) compounds 1-8 containing miscellaneous counterions. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis confirmed the expected molecular structures of all the reported coordination compounds and revealed the octahedral geometry of metal centres in the complex dications of 1-8. Compounds 1-6 prepared from tridentate ligands were low-spin and, therefore, diamagnetic up to 400 K. On the other hand, compounds 7 and 8, in which the Fe(ii) centre was coordinated with didentate ligand L3, exhibited temperature and light triggered spin-crossover behaviour. The theoretical calculations supported the experimental magnetic investigation and helped to explain the electronic structures of the reported complexes with respect to the occurrence of thermal and light induced spin state switching. In addition, the solution redox properties of compounds 1-8 were investigated by cyclic voltammetry.

Field-induced SIM behaviour of a Co(II) complex with a 1,1'-diacetylferrocene-derived ligand

Herein, we report the synthesis and magnetic properties of the Co(ii) coordination compound with the 1,1'-bis(1-((pyrid-2-ylmethylene)hydrazono)ethyl)ferrocene (L) ligand, having the general formula [CoLCl2]. The static magnetic data analysis supported by the CASSCF/NEVPT2 calculations revealed the presence of the triaxial magnetic anisotropy with Dexp = +35.2 cm-1 and large rhombicity (E/D = 0.31) in this complex (Dcalc = +34.5 cm-1, E/Dcalc = 0.30). The dynamic magnetic data confirm that the complex shows a slow field-induced (HDC = 1000 Oe) magnetic relaxation behaviour.

Magnetic anisotropy in square pyramidal cobalt(II) complexes supported by a tetraazo macrocyclic ligand

Two five-coordinate mononuclear Co(ii) complexes [Co(12-TMC)X][B(C6H5)4] (L = 1,4,7,10-tetramethyl-1,4,7,10-tetraazacyclododecane (12-TMC), X = Cl- (1), Br- (2)) have been studied by X-ray single crystallography, magnetic measurements, high-frequency and -field EPR (HF-EPR) spectroscopy and theoretical calculations. Both complexes have a distorted square pyramidal geometry with the Co(ii) ion lying above the basal plane constrained by the rigid tetradentate macrocyclic ligand. In contrast to the reported five-coordinate Co(ii) complex [Co(12-TMC)(NCO)][B(C6H5)4] (3) exhibiting easy-axis anisotropy, an easy-plane magnetic anisotropy was found for 1 and 2via the analyses of the direct-current magnetic data and HF-EPR spectroscopy. Frequency- and temperature-dependent alternating-current magnetic susceptibility measurements demonstrated that complexes 1 and 2 show slow magnetic relaxation at an applied dc field. Ab initio calculations were performed to reveal the impact of the terminal ligands on the nature of the magnetic anisotropies of this series of five-coordinate Co(ii) complexes.

Late first-row transition metal complexes of a 17-membered piperazine-based macrocyclic ligand: structures and magnetism

A 17-membered piperazine-based macrocyclic ligand LdiProp (1,5,13,17,22-pentaazatricyclo[15.2.2.17,11]docosa-7,9,11(22)-triene) was resynthesized in high yield by using a linear pump. Its Mn(ii), Fe(ii), Co(ii) and Ni(ii) complexes of the general formula [MnLdiProp(ClO4)2] (1), [FeLdiProp(CH3CN)](ClO4)2 (2), [CoLdiProp(CH3CN)](ClO4)2 (3), [NiLdiProp](ClO4)2 (4) were prepared and thoroughly characterized. X-ray diffraction analysis confirmed that Mn(ii) complex 1 has capped trigonal prismatic geometry with a coordination number of seven, Fe(ii) and Co(ii) complexes 2 and 3 are trigonal prismatic with a coordination number of six and Ni(ii) complex 4 has square pyramidal geometry with a coordination number of five. The decrease of the coordination number is accompanied by a shortening of M-N distances and an increase of torsion of the piperazine ring from the equatorial plane. Magnetic measurement reveals moderate anisotropy for 4 and rather large magnetic anisotropy for 2 and 3 (axial zero-field splitting parameter D(Ni) = 9.0 cm-1, D(Fe) = -14.4 cm-1, D(Co) = -25.8 cm-1, together with rather high rhombicity). Co(ii) complex 3 behaves as a field-induced SMM with a combination of Raman and direct or Orbach and direct relaxation mechanisms. Obtained magnetic data were extensively supported by theoretical CASSCF calculations. The flexibility and rather large 17-membered macrocyclic cavity of ligand LdiProp could be responsible for the variation of coordination numbers and geometries for the investigated late-first row transition metals.
