Electrostatic Gating of Phosphorene Polymorphs

The ability to directly monitor the states of electrons in modern field-effect transistors (FETs) could transform our understanding of the physics and improve the function of related devices. In particular, phosphorene allotropes present a fertile landscape for the development of high-performance FETs. Using density functional theory-based methods, we have systematically investigated the influence of electrostatic gating on the structures, stabilities, and fundamental electronic properties of pristine and carbon-doped monolayer (bilayer) phosphorene allotropes. The remarkable flexibility of phosphorene allotropes, arising from intra- and interlayer van der Waals interactions, causes a good resilience up to equivalent gate potential of two electrons per unit cell. The resilience depends on the stacking details in such a way that rotated bilayers show considerably higher thermodynamical stability than the unrotated ones, even at a high gate potential. In addition, a semiconductor to metal phase transition is observed in some of the rotated and carbon-doped structures with increased electronic transport relative to graphene in the context of real space Green's function formalism.

Twisted bilayer arsenene sheets as a chemical sensor for toluene and M-xylene vapours - A DFT investigation

2D (two-dimensional) materials are emerging in today's world. Among the 2D materials, arsenene sheets are prominently used as chemical and biosensors. In the present work, the twisted bilayer arsenene sheets (TB-AsNS) are used to adsorb toluene and M-xylene vapours. Moreover, the band gap of pristine TB-AsNS is calculated to be 0.437 eV. Besides, the surface adsorption of toluene and M-xylene vapours modify the electronic properties of TB-AsNS noticed from the band structure, density of states, and electron density difference diagrams. The surface assimilation of target toluene and M-xylene on TB-AsNS falls in the physisorption regime facilitating the adsorption and desorption of molecules. Also, the charge transfer analysis infers that TB-AsNS acts as acceptor and target molecules play as donors. The findings support that TB-AsNS can be used as a sensing medium towards M-xylene and toluene.

Recent Advancements and Future Prospects in Ultrathin 2D Semiconductor-Based Photocatalysts for Water Splitting

Ultrathin two-dimensional (2D) semiconductor-mediated photocatalysts have shown their compelling potential and have arguably received tremendous attention in photocatalysis because of their superior thickness-dependent physical, chemical, mechanical and optical properties. Although numerous comprehensions about 2D semiconductor photocatalysts have been amassed up to now, low cost efficiency, degradation, kinetics of charge transfer along with recycling are still the big challenges to realize a wide application of 2D semiconductor-based photocatalysis. At present, most photocatalysts still need rare or expensive noble metals to improve the photocatalytic activity, which inhibits their commercial-scale application extremely. Thus, developing less costly, earth-abundant semiconductor-based photocatalysts with efficient conversion of sunlight energy remains the primary challenge. In this review, it begins with a brief description of the general mechanism of overall photocatalytic water splitting. Then a concise overview of different types of 2D semiconductor-mediated photocatalysts is given to figure out the advantages and disadvantages for mentioned semiconductor-based photocatalysis, including the structural property and stability, synthesize method, electrochemical property and optical properties for H2/O2 production half reaction along with overall water splitting. Finally, we conclude this review with a perspective, marked on some remaining challenges and new directions of 2D semiconductor-mediated photocatalysts.
