Chemical background of silver nanoparticles interfering with mammalian copper metabolism

The rapidly increasing application of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) boosts their release into the environment, which raises a reasonable alarm for ecologists and health specialists. This is manifested as increased research devoted to the influence of AgNPs on physiological and cellular processes in various model systems, including mammals. The topic of the present paper is the ability of silver to interfere with copper metabolism, the potential health effects of this interference, and the danger of low silver concentrations to humans. The chemical properties of ionic and nanoparticle silver, supporting the possibility of silver release by AgNPs in extracellular and intracellular compartments of mammals, are discussed. The possibility of justified use of silver for the treatment of some severe diseases, including tumors and viral infections, based on the specific molecular mechanisms of the decrease in copper status by silver ions released from AgNPs is also discussed.

Facile Fabrication of Ultrasensitive Honeycomb Nano-Mesh Ultraviolet Photodetectors Based on Self-Assembled Plasmonic Architectures

The dilemma of harvesting fugacious photons by photoactive nanomaterials of limited absorption volume fundamentally hinders the photodetection at relatively lower light intensities. To address the insufficient light utilization efficiency, spatial light confinement becomes an effective and promising approach. High-performance ultraviolet (UV) photodetectors based on the self-assembled Au nanoparticle/ZnO honeycomb nano-mesh (Au NP/ZnO HN) are demonstrated through a facile solution-processed method on anodized aluminum oxide (AAO) membranes. The congregated geometry of the self-assembled ZnO HNs is well-defined by the AAO matrixes, which also effectively collects the transmitted light beams back to the photoactive layers. Benefiting from surface plasmon resonance, the enhanced absorption of the ZnO HNs is eventually obtained via the recursive light utilization between Au NPs and AAO matrixes as a function of AAO pore diameters (D_AAO). With a systematic control of the photodetector configurations, an optimal performance is obtained with growth duration of the ZnO HNs for 40 min on the AAO substrates (D_AAO = 100 nm), and an excellent responsivity of 23.4 A/W is witnessed even under a relatively low light intensity of 0.4 mW/cm², providing a novel route to realize high-performance UV photodetection under low-power illumination.

New Textile for Personal Protective Equipment—Plasma Chitosan/Silver Nanoparticles Nylon Fabric

Fabric structures are prone to contamination with microorganisms, as their morphology and ability to retain moisture creates a proper environment for their growth. In this work, a novel, easily processed and cheap coating for a nylon fabric with antimicrobial characteristics was developed. After plasma treatment, made to render the fabric surface more reactive sites, the fabric was impregnated with chitosan and silver nanoparticles by simply dipping it into a mixture of different concentrations of both components. Silver nanoparticles were previously synthesized using the Lee–Meisel method, and their successful obtention was proven by UV–Vis, showing the presence of the surface plasmon resonance band at 410 nm. Nanoparticles with 25 nm average diameter observed by STEM were stable, mainly in the presence of chitosan, which acted as a surfactant for silver nanoparticles, avoiding their aggregation. The impregnated fabric possessed bactericidal activity higher for Gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus than for Gram-negative Pseudomonas aeruginosa bacteria for all combinations. The percentage of live S. aureus and P. aeruginosa CFU was reduced to less than 20% and 60%, respectively, when exposed to each of the coating combinations. The effect was more pronounced when both chitosan and silver were present in the coating, suggesting an effective synergy between these components. After a washing process, the antimicrobial effect was highly reduced, suggesting that the coating is unstable after washing, being almost completely removed from the fabric. Nevertheless, the new-coated fabric can be successfully used in single-use face masks. To our knowledge, the coating of nylon fabrics intended for face-mask material with both agents has never been reported.

An intense source for cold cluster ions of a specific composition

The demand for nanoscale materials of ultra-high purity and narrow size distribution is addressed. Clusters of Au, C₆₀, H₂O, and serine are produced inside helium nanodroplets using a combination of ionization, mass filtering, collisions with atomic or molecular vapor, and electrostatic extraction, in a specific and novel sequence. The helium droplets are produced in an expansion of cold helium gas through a nozzle into vacuum. The droplets are ionized by electron bombardment and subjected to a mass filter. The ionic and mass-selected helium droplets are then guided through a vacuum chamber filled with atomic or molecular vapor where they collide and "pick up" the vapor. The dopants then agglomerate inside the helium droplets around charge centers to singly charged clusters. Evaporation of the helium droplets is induced by collisions in a helium-filled radio frequency (RF)-hexapole, which liberates the cluster ions from the host droplets. The clusters are analyzed with a time-of-flight mass spectrometer. It is demonstrated that using this sequence, the size distribution of the dopant cluster ions is distinctly narrower compared to ionization after pickup. Likewise, the ion cluster beam is more intense. The mass spectra show, as well, that ion clusters of the dopants can be produced with only few helium atoms attached, which will be important for messenger spectroscopy. All these findings are important for the scientific research of clusters and nanoscale materials in general.
