Abstract
Three anionic metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) {[Zn3(BTEC)2(H2O)(4-BCBPY)]·(H2O)} n (1-3) (BTEC4- = 1,2,4,5-benzenetetracarboxylic acid anion, 4-BCBPY2+ = 1,1'-bis(4-cyanobenzyl)-4,4'-bipyridinium dication) were synthesized in the reaction of 1,2,4,5-benzenetetracarboxylic acid with different metal salts such as ZnNO3, ZnCl2, and ZnSO4, under solvothermal conditions in the presence of 1,1'-bis(4-cyanobenzyl)-4,4'-bipyridinium chloride. Single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis shows that compounds 1, 2 and 3 have MOF structures based on binuclear metal building units, which are connected by two protonated BTEC4- ligands and three zinc ions, and the viologen cation 4-BCBPY2+ is located in the channel to achieve charge balance. Compounds 1, 2 and 3 have good photosensitivity, respond to sunlight, UV light and blue ray, and turn blue. The D-A distance and π-π stacking distance of the discolored samples (1P, 2P and 3P) changed. In addition, the three compounds showed visible color changes to ammonia vapor, rapidly changing from white to blue. At the same time, the three compounds exhibited fluorescence quenching to ammonia vapor and Cr2O7 2-. It is further proved that compounds 1, 2 and 3 are fluorescent sensors with a low detection limit (for Cr2O7 2-: 10-5 M) and high sensitivity for ammonia vapor and Cr2O7 2-. It was found that photochromic behavior, ammonia sensing properties can be tuned by the nature of metal salts.

Abstract
An iterative step-growth addition method was used to expedite the gram-scale synthesis of main-chain polyviologens by several days, while also producing the longest main-chain polyviologen (i.e., 26 viologen subunits) reported to date. Facile degradation using inorganic and organic aqueous bases was also demonstrated for a representative oligoviologen (6V-Me·12Cl), a polyviologen (26V-Me·52Cl), and oligoviologen-crosslinked hydrogels.

Abstract
A supramolecular network [H4bdcbpy(NO3)2·H2O] (H4bdcbpy = 1,1′-Bis(3,5-dicarboxybenzyl)-4,4′-bipyridinium) (1) was prepared by a zwitterionic viologen carboxylate ligand in hydrothermal synthesis conditions. The as-synthesized (1) has been well characterized by means of single-crystal/powder X-ray diffraction, elemental analysis, thermogravimetric analysis and infrared and UV-vis spectroscopy. This compound possesses a three-dimensional supramolecular structure, formed by the hydrogen bond and π–π interaction between the organic ligands. This compound shows photochromic properties under UV light, as well as vapochromic behavior upon exposure to volatile amines and ammonia, in which the electron transfer from electron-rich parts to the electron-deficient viologen unit gives rise to colored radicals. Moreover, the intensive intermolecular H-bonding networks in 1 endows it with a proton conductivity of 1.06 × 10−3 S cm−1 in water at 90 °C.

Abstract
The absorption spectrum of viologen salts in a medium or low polar solvent is an essential feature that influences all its “chromic” applications, whether we are considering thermochromic, electrochromic, photochromic or chemochromic devices. The prediction by quantum chemical methods of such absorption bands, typically observed in the visible range and due to charge transfer (CT) phenomena, is a very challenging problem due to strong solvent effects influencing both the geometry and the electronic transitions. Here we present a computational protocol based on DFT to predict with very high accuracy the absorption maxima of the CT bands of a series of viologen salts in solvents of low and medium polarity. The calculations also allow a clear dissection of the solvent effects, direct and indirect, and orbital contributions to the CT band.

Abstract
A two-dimensional Cd(ii) metal-organic framework (MOF) was constructed from a tris(pyridinium)-based hexacarboxylate zwitterionic ligand. The MOF shows a novel fashion of 2-fold 2D → 2D parallel entanglement. It is the entanglement that dictates close interlayer contacts between carboxylate (electron donor) and pyridinium (acceptor), which in turn impart the MOF with reversible photochromic properties through photoinduced electron transfer (PET). This is an extension of PET-based photochromism from bipyridinium to multipyridinium compounds. Thanks to the photoresponsive behaviour, the fluorescence of the MOF can be reversibly modulated or switched by photoirradiation. Besides, the fluorescence of the water-stable MOF in aqueous dispersion is very sensitive to nitrofuran antibiotics with high selectivity, and therefore the MOF is a good candidate of efficient and regenerable sensing material for determination of the antibiotics in water media.

ACTA CRYSTALLOGRAPHICA SECTION C-STRUCTURAL CHEMISTRY 2019; 75:1628-1634. Abstract
In recent years, viologens and their derivatives have received much attention due to their various potential applications, ranging from electro- or photochromic devices to clean energy. Generally, viologen compounds exhibit a colour change upon being subjected to an external stimulus. However, the chromic mechanism is still ambiguous, because there are many electron-transfer pathways for a chromic compound that need to be considered. Thus, exploring new chromic viologen-based compounds with one pathway should be important and meaningful. In this article, two new viologen-based derivatives, namely 1-(2-cyanobenzyl)-4,4′-bipyridinium chloride (o-CBbpy·Cl), C18H14N3
+·Cl− (1), and 1-(2-cyanobenzyl)-4,4′-bipyridinium bromide (o-CBbpy·Br), C18H14N3
+·Br− (2), have been synthesized and characterized. Interestingly, both isomorphic compounds possess only one electron-transfer pathway, in which 1-(2-cyanobenzyl)-4,4′-bipyridinium cations (o-CBbpy) and halide anions are employed as electron donors and acceptors, respectively. Salts 1 and 2 consist of o-CBbpy cations involved in π–π interactions and hydrogen-bond interactions, and halide anions weakly hydrogen bonded to the viologen cations. The salts show different photoresponsive characteristics under identical conditions, which should be mainly related to the distances between the halide cations and the cationic N atoms of o-CBbpy but not the electronegativities of the halogen atoms. These results should not only help in understanding that the distance of the electron-transfer pathway plays an important role in viologen-based photochromism, but should also guide the design and synthesis of additional photochromic materials.
