Abstract
Vinyl bisphosphonates can be readily prepared by condensation of an aromatic aldehyde with the tetraester of a methylenebisphosphonate, and reduction of the resulting olefin is an attractive strategy for the preparation of monoalkyl geminal bisphosphonates. Conjugate reduction through use of variations on the Stryker approach has proven to be an efficient method for that reduction, even in the presence of aromatic substituents that also could be reduced. Furthermore, remote olefins in an isoprenoid chain survive this conjugate reduction unaffected, allowing access to isoprenoid-substituted triazole bisphosphonates of interest as potential inhibitors of terpenoid biosynthesis.

Abstract
Bisphosphonates are widely used in medicine and related areas, mainly for the treatment of bone diseases, such as osteoporosis. However, their synthesis is usually performed under harsh reaction conditions. In order to overcome this limitation, the present work illustrates a new synthetic route to access the title α-aminobisphosphonate in milder reaction conditions using α-phosphorylated imines as key intermediates.

Abstract
The use of readily prepared bisphosphonic acids obtained in few steps through a thio‐Michael addition of commercially available thiols on tetraethyl vinylidenebisphosphonate enables the straightforward surface modification of amorphous mesoporous zirconia nanoparticles. Simple stirring of the zirconia nanoparticles in a buffered aqueous solution of the proper bisphosphonic acid leads to the surface functionalization of the nanoparticles with different kinds of functional groups, charge and hydrophobic properties. Formation of both chemisorbed and physisorbed layers of the bisphosphonic acid take place, observing after extensive washing a grafting density of 1.1 molecules/nm2 with negligible release in neutral or acidic pH conditions, demonstrating stronger loading compared to monophosphonate derivatives. The modified nanoparticles were characterized by IR, XPS, ζ‐potential analysis to investigate the loading of the bisphosphonic acid, FE‐SEM to investigate the size and morphologies of the nanoparticles and 31P and 1H MAS NMR to investigate the coordination motif of the phosphonate units on the surface. All these analytical techniques demonstrated the strong affinity of the bisphosphonic moiety for the Zr(IV) metal centers. The functionalization with bisphosphonic acids represents a straightforward covalent approach for tailoring the superficial properties of zirconia nanoparticles, much straightforward compared the classic use of trisalkoxysilane or trichlorosilane reagents typically employed for the functionalization of silica and metal oxide nanoparticles. Extension of the use of bisphosphonates to other metal oxide nanoparticles is advisable.

Abstract
Novel pyrazolo[3,4-b]quinoline α-ketophosphonic and hydroxymethylenebisphosphonic acid compounds were synthesized using different methodologies, starting from 2-chloro-3-formylquinoline 1. New phosphonic acid compounds were obtained as N-1 derivatives with a side chain with 1 or 3 (n = 1 or 3) methylene groups. All phosphonic acid compounds and their corresponding ester and carboxylic acid precursors were fully characterized, and their structures elucidated by spectroscopic data, using NMR techniques and infrared and high-resolution mass spectroscopy. During the process to obtain the N-1 substituted derivative with two methylene groups (n = 2) in the side chain, an unexpected addition-cyclization cascade reaction was observed, involving the phosphonylation of an aromatic ring and the formation of a new six-member lactam ring to afford a tetracyclic ring system. This was an unexpected result since other pyrazolo[3,4-b]quinoline derivatives and all corresponding pyrazolo[3,4-b]pyridine derivatives already prepared, under similar experimental conditions, did not undergo this reaction. This domino reaction occurs with different phosphite reagents but only affords the six-member ring. The spectroscopic data allowed the identification of the new synthesized tetracyclic compounds and the X-ray diffraction data of compound 11 enabled the confirmation of the proposed structures.
