Synchronous Proton-Hydride Transfer by a Pyrazole-Functionalized Protic Mn(I) Complex in Catalytic Alcohol Dehydrogenative Coupling

A series of Mn(I) complexes Mn(L1 )(CO)3 Br, Mn(L2 )(CO)3 Br, Mn(L1 )(CO)3 (OAc) and Mn(L3 )(CO)3 Br [L1 =2-(5-tert-butyl-1H-pyrazol-3-yl)-1,8-naphthyridine, L2 =2-(5-tert-butyl-1H-pyrazol-3-yl)pyridine, L3 =2-(5-tert-butyl-1-methyl-1H-pyrazol-3-yl)-1,8-naphthyridine] were synthesized and fully characterized. The acid-base equilibrium between the pyrazole and the pyrazolato forms of Mn(L1 )(CO)3 Br was studied by 1 H NMR and UV-vis spectra. These complexes are screened as catalysts for acceptorless dehydrogenative coupling (ADC) of primary alcohols and aromatic diamines for the synthesis of benzimidazole and quinoline derivatives with the release of H2 and H2 O as byproducts. The protic complex Mn(L1 )(CO)3 Br shows the highest catalytic activity for the synthesis of 2-substituted benzimidazole derivatives with broad substrate scope, whereas a related complex [Mn(L3 )(CO)3 Br], which is devoid of the proton responsive β-NH unit, shows significantly reduced catalytic efficiency validating the crucial role of the β-NH functionality for the alcohol dehydrogenation reactions. Control experiments, kinetic and deuterated studies, and density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal a synchronous hydride-proton transfer by the metal-ligand construct in the alcohol dehydrogenation step.

Water as a solvent: transition metal catalyzed dehydrogenation of alcohols going green

The long-established practice of using organic solvents in synthetic chemistry is currently becoming a major focus of environmental alarms as many of the chemical wastes are generated in the form of organic solvents. Recently, various alternative solvents have been recognized by the scientific community, including water, ionic liquids, supercritical fluids, glycerol, polyethylene glycol, etc. Among these alternatives, water is unquestionably an ideal solvent as it is abundant, cheap, non-toxic, and non-flammable. In the last few decades, a breakthrough has been achieved in the field of transition metal-catalyzed dehydrogenation of alcohols and the related chemistry for the sustainable synthesis of a wide range of valuable compounds. Although a large number of reports with new potential are published every year following this alcohol dehydrogenation strategy, the utilization of water as a solvent in alcohol dehydrogenation and related coupling reactions is yet to be highlighted properly. This review summarizes the advances in metal-catalyzed dehydrogenative functionalization of alcohols using water as a solvent.

A Proton-Responsive Pyridyl(benzamide)-Functionalized NHC Ligand on Ir Complex for Alkylation of Ketones and Secondary Alcohols

A Cp*Ir(III) complex (1) of a newly designed ligand L¹ featuring a proton-responsive pyridyl(benzamide) appended on N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) has been synthesized. The molecular structure of 1 reveals a dearomatized form of the ligand. The protonation of 1 with HBF₄ in tetrahydrofuran gives the corresponding aromatized complex [Cp*Ir(L¹ H)Cl]BF₄ (2). Both compounds are characterized spectroscopically and by X-ray crystallography. The protonation of 1 with acid is examined by ¹ H NMR and UV-vis spectra. The proton-responsive character of 1 is exploited for catalyzing α-alkylation of ketones and β-alkylation of secondary alcohols using primary alcohols as alkylating agents through hydrogen-borrowing methodology. Compound 1 is an effective catalyst for these reactions and exhibits a superior activity in comparison to a structurally similar iridium complex [Cp*Ir(L² )Cl]PF₆ (3) lacking a proton-responsive pendant amide moiety. The catalytic alkylation is characterized by a wide substrate scope, low catalyst and base loadings, and a short reaction time. The catalytic efficacy of 1 is also demonstrated for the syntheses of quinoline and lactone derivatives via acceptorless dehydrogenation, and selective alkylation of two steroids, pregnenolone and testosterone. Detailed mechanistic investigations and DFT calculations substantiate the role of the proton-responsive ligand in the hydrogen-borrowing process.

Cross β-alkylation of primary alcohols catalysed by DMF-stabilized iridium nanoparticles

A simple method for the cross β-alkylation of linear alcohols with benzyl alcohols in the presence of DMF-stabilized iridium nanoparticles was developed. The nanoparticles were prepared in one-step and thoroughly characterized. Furthermore, the optimum reaction conditions have a wide substrate scope and excellent product selectivity.

Tungsten-Catalyzed Direct N-Alkylation of Anilines with Alcohols

The implementation of non-noble metals mediated chemistry is a major goal in homogeneous catalysis. Borrowing hydrogen/hydrogen autotransfer (BH/HA) reaction, as a straightforward and sustainable synthetic method, has attracted considerable attention in the development of non-noble metal catalysts. Herein, we report a tungsten-catalyzed N-alkylation reaction of anilines with primary alcohols via BH/HA. This phosphine-free W(phen)(CO)₄ (phen=1,10-phenthroline) system was demonstrated as a practical and easily accessible in-situ catalysis for a broad range of amines and alcohols (up to 49 examples, including 16 previously undisclosed products). Notably, this tungsten system can tolerate numerous functional groups, especially the challenging substrates with sterically hindered substituents, or heteroatoms. Mechanistic insights based on experimental and computational studies are also provided.

Iridium Complex-Catalyzed C2-Extension of Primary Alcohols with Ethanol via a Hydrogen Autotransfer Reaction

The development of a C2-extension of primary alcohols with ethanol as the C2 source and catalysis by [Cp*IrCl₂]₂ (where Cp* = pentamethylcyclopentadiene) is described. This new extension system was used for a range of benzylic alcohol substrates and for aliphatic alcohols with ethanol as an alkyl reagent to generate the corresponding C2-extended linear alcohols. Mechanistic studies of the reaction by means of intermediates and deuterium labeling experiments suggest the reaction is based on hydrogen autotransfer.

Double C-N bond cleavages of N-alkyl 4-oxopiperidinium salts: access to unsymmetrical tertiary sulfonamides

In this paper, regiospecific, double intraannular C-N bond cleavages of N-alkyl 4-oxopiperidinium salts are presented. The reaction sequence involves a charge-transfer complex, in situ formed between sulfonyl chloride and N-methylmorpholine, which induces S-Cl bond homolysis of sulfonyl chloride, yielding a reactive sulfonyl radical that further induces the double C-N bond cleavages of N-alkyl 4-oxopiperidinium salt. The secondary amine thus produced was trapped by sulfonyl chloride to yield the desired sulfonamide product. The key feature of this protocol is that two intraannular C-N bonds of the 4-oxopiperidine ring are cleaved in one step under metal- and oxidant-free conditions.

Boron-Catalyzed N-Alkylation of Arylamines and Arylamides with Benzylic Alcohols

A sustainable boron-based catalytic approach for chemoselective N-alkylation of primary and secondary aromatic amines and amides with primary, secondary, and tertiary benzylic alcohols has been presented. The metal-free protocol operates at low catalyst loading, tolerates several functional groups, and generates H₂O as the sole byproduct. Preliminary mechanistic studies were performed to demonstrate the crucial role of boron catalyst for the activation of the intermediate dibenzyl ether and to identify the rate-determining step.
