Self-Assembly of a Hierarchical Metal-Organic Framework at the Liquid/Liquid Interface via π-π Stacking Manipulations in Organoplatinum(IV) Complexes for Methanol Fuel Cells

This study focuses on the facile synthesis of the hierarchical architecture of zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) films containing an ultrasmall amount of Pt(0) by investigating the synthesis of different organoplatinum complexes and manipulating the π-π stacking effect in these complexes at the liquid/liquid interface. The organometallic Pt(IV) precursors were complexes with a formula of [PtXMe2(R)(bpy)] (bpy = 2,2'-bipyridine; for complex 2, R = CH2CH═CHC6H5 and X = Br; for complex 3, R = CH2CH═CH2 and X = Br; for complex 4, R = Me and X = I) prepared by oxidative addition of cinnamyl bromide, allyl bromide, or methyl iodide to [PtMe2(bpy)] (complex 1). Different thin films were synthesized starting from three organometallic Pt(IV) precursors (i) by reduction of the Pt complexes at the toluene/water interface (TF2-TF4), (ii) by encapsulation of the Pt precursors in a ZIF-8 (TF5-TF7), and (iii) by reduction of the Pt precursors onto a ZIF-8 (TF8-TF10). The self-assembly of ZIF-8 and different organoplatinum precursors at the interface of two immiscible liquids leads to the preparation of films with well-engineered structures such as rhombic dodecahedra, nanorods, hierarchical architectures, and nanowires, which are very difficult and complicated to synthesize under normal conditions. The ultralow loading of platinum complexes with different degrees of π-π stacking of dangling moieties has a great impact on the structure and morphology (directing agent), which in turn drastically changes the catalytic properties. The obtained films were applied as electrocatalysts for methanol oxidation in fuel cells. The electrocatalytic performance of organoplatinum containing a cinnamyl group in hierarchical architecture TF8 was found to be superior to those of nonhierarchical structures.

Enhanced adsorption and removal of Cd(II) from aqueous solution by amino-functionalized ZIF-8

Zeolite imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8), which is a special subgroup of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), was synthesized and modified by ethylenediamine (ZIF-8-EDA) to prepare an efficient adsorbent for the high sorption of Cd2+ ions from solution. The synthesized and modified ZIF-8 (ZIF-8-EDA) were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) with energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analysis. The optimum conditions for dosage of adsorbent, initial ion concentration, pH, and contact time were 0.05 g/l, 50 mg/l, 6, and 60 min, respectively, for cadmium ion sorption from aqueous solutions with a removal efficiency of 89.7% for ZIF-8 and 93.5% for ZIF-8-EDA. Adsorption kinetics and equilibrium data were analyzed using the Langmuir and Freundlich equations. The Langmuir model fitted the equilibrium data better than the Freundlich model. According to the Langmuir equation, the maximum uptake for the cadmium ions was 294.11(mg/g). The calculated thermodynamic parameters (ΔG°, ΔH°, and ΔS°) indicated that the adsorption process was feasible, spontaneous, and endothermic at 20-50 °C. Based on the results, the amino functionalized ZIF-8 had improved adsorption performance due to the replacing of the starting linker with organic ligands that had effective functional groups, leading to chemical coordination due to the interaction of metal ions with the non-bonding pair of electrons on the N atoms of the amino functional group. The selectivity toward metal ion adsorption by ZIF-8-EDA was Cd2+ > Pb2+ > Ni2+‏.

Pt@Metal-Organic Framework (ZIF-8) Thin Films Obtained at a Liquid/Liquid Interface as Anode Electrocatalysts for Methanol Fuel Cells: Different Approaches in the Synthesis

Smart membranes, nanodevices, chemical sensors, and catalytic coatings are some of the applications that make the metal-organic framework (MOF) thin films very important. Encapsulation of nanoparticles in the porous structure of MOFs can lead to the formation of effective catalysts with new unique properties and wide range of applications that may not be obtained by MOFs individually. Three main strategies, ship-in-a-bottle, bottle-around-the-ship, and in situ synthesis including the simultaneous formation of the two components, were applied for the synthesis of Pt(0)@zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) thin films at the toluene/water interface. The effects of platinum precursor transfer directions toward the interface on the properties of the films were investigated by using the [PtCl₂(cod)] (where cod = cis,cis-1,5-cyclooctadiene) complex soluble in toluene as the upper phase and K₂PtCl₄ soluble in water as the lower phase. The six obtained films with different morphologies were applied as electrocatalysts for the methanol oxidation reaction. Considerable current density, mass activity, catalyst stability, activation energy, exchange current density, maximum power, and long-term poisoning rate are some of the advantages of the Pt(0)@ZIF-8 catalysts synthesized using the in situ strategy and K₂PtCl₄ as the platinum precursor. Furthermore, we report the formation of Pt@ZIF-8 nanorods at the interfaces without using any stabilizer or template. Our results suggest that the in situ strategy at the liquid/liquid interface is one of the best procedures for the synthesis of Pt(0)@ZIF-8 thin films as a suitable anode electrocatalyst for methanol fuel cells.

Surface-coordinated metal-organic framework thin films (SURMOFs) for electrocatalytic applications

The design and development of highly efficient electrocatalysts are very important in energy storage and conversion. As a kind of inorganic organic hybrid material, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been used as electrocatalysts in electrocatalytic reactions due to their structural diversities and fascinating functionalities. Particularly, MOF thin films are coordinated on substrate surfaces by a liquid phase epitaxial (LPE) layer by layer (LBL) growth method (called surface-coordinated MOF thin films, SURMOFs), and recently have been studied in various applications due to their precisely controlled thickness, preferred growth orientation and homogeneous surface. In this review, we will summarize the preparation and electrocatalysis of SURMOFs and their derived thin films (SURMOF-D). The SURMOF based thin films possess diverse topological structures and flexible properties, providing abundant catalytically active sites and fast charge transfer for efficient electrocatalytic performance in the oxygen evolution reaction (OER), oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), carbon dioxide reduction reaction (CRR), supercapacitors, tandem electrocatalysis and so on. The research challenges and problems of SURMOFs for electrocatalytic applications are also discussed at the end of the review.

Metal–Organic Framework Thin Films: Fabrication, Modification, and Patterning

Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) have been of great interest for their outstanding properties, such as large surface area, low density, tunable pore size and functionality, excellent structural flexibility, and good chemical stability. A significant advancement in the preparation of MOF thin films according to the needs of a variety of applications has been achieved in the past decades. Yet there is still high demand in advancing the understanding of the processes to realize more scalable, controllable, and greener synthesis. This review provides a summary of the current progress on the manufacturing of MOF thin films, including the various thin-film deposition processes, the approaches to modify the MOF structure and pore functionality, and the means to prepare patterned MOF thin films. The suitability of different synthesis techniques under various processing environments is analyzed. Finally, we discuss opportunities for future development in the manufacturing of MOF thin films.
