Stable Mg Single-Atom Solid Base Catalysts Anchored on Metal-Organic Framework-Derived Nitrogen-Doped Carbon

Solid base catalysts are widely used in the chemical industry owing to their advantages of environmental friendliness and easy separation. However, their application is limited by basic site aggregation and poor stability. In this study, we report the preparation of magnesium (Mg) single-atom catalysts with high activity and stability by a sublimation-trapping strategy. The Mg net was sublimated as Mg vapor at 620 °C, subsequently transported through argon, and finally trapped on the defects of nitrogen-doped carbon derived from metal-organic framework ZIF-8, producing Mg1/NC. Because of the atomically dispersed Mg sites, the obtained Mg1/NC exhibits high catalytic activity and stability for Knoevenagel condensation of benzaldehyde with malononitrile, which is a typical base-catalyzed reaction. The Mg1/NC catalyst achieves a high efficiency with a turnover frequency of 49.6 h-1, which is much better than that of the traditional counterpart MgO/NC (7.7 h-1). In particular, the activity of Mg1/NC shows no decrease after five catalytic cycles, while that of MgO/NC declines due to the instability of basic sites.

Nitrogen-Enriched Biguanidine-Functionalized Cobalt Ferrite Nanoparticles as a Heterogeneous Base Catalyst for Knoevenagel Condensation under Solvent-Free Conditions

Designing efficient, economical heterogeneous catalysts for the Knoevenagel condensation reaction is highly significant owing to the importance of reaction products in industries as well as pharmaceutics. Herein, we have designed and synthesized biguanidine-functionalized basic magnetically retrievable cobalt ferrite nanoparticles (CFNPs) for the synthesis of Knoevenagel condensation products using benzaldehydes and active methylene compounds (malononitrile/ethyl cyanoacetate/cyanoacetamide). Several advanced techniques, such as Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and vibration sample magnetometry (VSM), were utilized to precisely characterize the catalyst. The robust features of the current approach involve outstanding catalytic performance, solvent-free reaction conditions, ease of catalyst retrievability, easy workup procedure, large substrate tolerance, high turnover frequency (TOF) values (up to 486.88 h-1), values of green chemistry metrics such as E-factor (0.15), reaction mass efficiency (RME) value (87.07%), carbon efficiency (93.4%), and atom economy (AE) value (88.10%) close to their ideal values, and recyclability up to eight runs without a considerable reduction in activity, boosting the appeal of this approach from a commercial and ecological point of view.

Diamino group-functionalized Zr-based metal-organic framework for fluorescence sensing of free chlorine in the aqueous phase and Knoevenagel condensation

We developed a porous diamino group-functionalized Zr(IV) metal-organic framework (MOF). The synthesized MOF has a similar structure to DUT-52 (DUT = Dresden University of Technology), which has a face-centered cubic structure with an Fm3̄m space group. The synthesized material (DUT-52-(NH2)2-1) was solvent exchanged with methanol (MeOH) and activated at 100 °C overnight. Both the as-synthesized and activated materials (DUT-52-(NH2)2-1') are thermally stable until 300 °C. The Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface area of DUT-52-(NH2)2-1' was found to be 413 m² g^-1. DUT-52-(NH2)2-1' showed a significant quenching of fluorescence response after coming in contact with free chlorine (ClO^-) in an aqueous medium. The selectivity of DUT-52-(NH2)2-1' towards ClO^- was not significantly hampered in the presence of any competitive ion. The limit of detection (LOD) value was found to be 0.08 μM in phosphate-buffered saline (PBS, pH = 7.4). DUT-52-(NH2)2-1' is recyclable and very sensitive towards ClO^-. Moreover, the paper strip method was developed for onsite identification of ClO^-. Furthermore, the catalytic activity of DUT-52-(NH2)2-1' was tested in the Knoevenagel condensation between benzaldehyde and cyanoacetamide. The experimental results clearly indicate that DUT-52-(NH2)2-1' exhibits high activity with very high selectivity towards condensation products. The solid was reusable three times with no decay in its activity, as evidenced by powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) and fourier transform infrared (FT-IR).

Ag2CO3 containing magnetic nanocomposite as a powerful and recoverable catalyst for Knoevenagel condensation

In this paper, the synthesis, characterization and catalytic application of a novel magnetic silica-supported Ag2CO3 (MS/Ag2CO3) with core-shell structure are developed. The MS/Ag2CO3 nanocomposite was prepared through chemical modification of magnetic MS nanoparticles with AgNO3 under alkaline conditions. The structure, chemical composition and magnetic properties of MS/Ag2CO3 were investigated by using VSM, PXRD, FT-IR, EDX and SEM techniques. The MS/Ag2CO3 nanocomposite was used as an effective catalyst for the Knoevenagel condensation under solvent-free conditions at 60 °C in an ultrasonic bath. The recovery and leaching tests were performed to study the nature of the MS/Ag2CO3 catalyst under applied conditions.
